A record-breaking Visit of Malaysian Archbishop to the chief Muslim cleric of Malaysia

In a meeting described as “historic” and “unprecedented,” Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim of Kuala Lumpur visited the chief Muslim cleric of Malaysia’s Federal Territories on January 7, according to the nation’s leading English-language newspaper.

Both men assumed their positions in 2014.

“The move was refreshing, as this was the first time a religious leader has made a courtesy call to my office,” said Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri. “We looked at what we have in common, not our differences.”

The Southeast Asian nation of 30.9 million is 61% Muslim, 20% Buddhist, 6% Hindu, 5% Protestant, and 4% Catholic. Islam is Malaysia’s official religion.
