What must a person do to receive the Eucharist after divorce if there is no remarriage? Is this reason not to receive Communion?

Full Question

What must a person do to receive the Eucharist after divorce if there is no remarriage? Is this reason not to receive Communion?

Answer

Divorce, of itself, is not an obstacle to receiving the Eucharist—but mortal sin is. If a person’s divorce is an occasion of mortal sin, then he must at least be reconciled with God and the Church, ordinarily through the sacrament of confession, prior to receiving the Eucharist.

That said, divorce is not always an occasion of sin for every spouse. The Catechism of the Catholic Church notes the following:

It can happen that one of the spouses is the innocent victim of a divorce decreed by civil law; this spouse therefore has not contravened the moral law. There is a considerable difference between a spouse who has sincerely tried to be faithful to the sacrament of marriage and is unjustly abandoned, and one who through his own grave fault destroys a canonically valid marriage. (CCC 2386)

If you know how many people take communion when they should not ?you know why ? because the doctrine has not been well taught to them How many people do not know the commandment of god ? they disrespect they parents ,They do not go to confession before they take the eucharisty when I see that It make me seek .Am I going to make a scandal in the church ? I really feel like it and leave church so disappointed that I prefer see the mass in TV

we are all sinners claire, do u really keep the commandments of God?? dont be hypocrites…by his grace, Jesus makes the church holy, just he is holy. This doesnt mean that all members is always holy. Jesus said there would be good and bad members in the church (Jojn 6 v 70) and not all members would go to heaven (Mt. 7 v 21-23) but the church itself is holy because it is the guardian of the special means of grace Jesus established, the sacraments (Eph.5 v 26) You cant let others to keep you from God. John 6 v 52-56 unless you eat flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you do not have life in you. Read and focus John chapter 6…its the one in which Jesus promises the Eucharist and states emphatically that what appears to be bread and wine really will be his blood and body. Read the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee.

I know exactly what you mean. Claire, but our church is so flimsy ifi can call it that……no strength, I think my church ‘puts up’ with anything simply because they want to keep the numbers up.

You must pray for others for they know not what they do. As for mass at home because you disagree with a some or the priest for that matter is no reason not to go. Go for the love of Jesus & honor him. You can’t let others keep you from God. I felt same way for a while but we are all poor sinners.

You must know the benefits and importance of Communion. Because it restores. You should know it. Whenever there is broken on you the more you need it. If you think you are a sinner, You need it all the more!!! Do not be hypocrite (self-righteous)!. We need Jesus’ Body and Blood because we are all sinners. None of us is righteous unless we have Faith. The Bible says: We have been made righteous because of our Faith not because of our works.!!!

yes we are all sinners, but we obey God because we love him. If I choose to take communion when i shouldn’t and excuse it by saying “oh well we all sin, so whatever you feel like doing” then we are just compounding the sin. The rules are not there to keep us from the good, but to prevent us from falling further away. This is the problem with the church today, we are too quick to make excuses for sin so as to not offend someone. It’s time to be offended by sin and not by the authority of the church or the penance required for us to be in full communion with the church, and therefore god. Let us all repent of our sins and really really make an attempt to stop sinning, not just when it’s easy, but specifically when it’s very difficult.
