Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas has urged prayers for peace after five police officers were shot dead in the city during a protest against recent police killings.
Bishop Farrell tweeted: “#Dallas is in shock right now – the senseless violence is heartbreaking. Please pray for healing and peace.”
Snipers started shooting from ‘elevated positions’ surrounding a protest last night in a co-ordinated attack that left five dead and six other police officers wounded.
The police reportedly have three people in custody and are negotiating with a fourth. The fourth suspect has engaged in gunfire with police from a garage at El Centro, a community college, in downtown Dallas.
In a separate tweet Bishop Farrell said: “In our grief, we turn to God for strength – ‘LORD, you are a strength for your people.’ (Psalms 28:8)”.
“Dallas mourns tonight,” he said.
The protest had been provoked by the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two black men shot dead by police this week.
