How can Muslims worship the same god as Christians?

Full Question

I’ve spent time in Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, and other Muslim countries, and I can tell you they don’t worship the same god Christians do. They believe the Trinity is made up of God, a human Jesus, and Mary, his mother. How can they worship the same god?

Granted, Muslims do not believe in the Trinity as we do. Nor do Jews. Yet we all believe in a Supreme Being who created and governs the universe. When St. Paul learned that the Greeks worshipped an unknown god (Acts 17:23), he identified that god as our God. Muslims worship the one God to the degree that they know him—which in our view, is a very limited knowledge.

I’ve been a Catholic from birth in 1963. In June of 2012 I married a beautiful woman Khadija who’s from Egypt and Somalia. Their religion is Muslim. Being taught that God (the G is capital check the title of your article) can be found in many places as well as his words, I would attend different church services from all denominations. After reading the Holy Quran and learning how Muslims pray, it’s not that much different. The biggest difference is, they don’t believe Jesus is the son of God, they believe Him to be a prophet like the prophet Muhammed.

Lord Jesus resurrected and ascended to heaven so Jesus is not just a prophet because there’s no other person in the Book who did like what Jesus had done in his gospel…

The Muslims believe in the same God as we do including everything else that we do except their belief in ‘human’ Jesus. In fact even other Christians like protestants have different beliefs. Some believe that Mary was married and had several children and Jesus had brothers and sisters which is contrary to Catholics.

    1. Allie Reply

Jesus had several brothers and two sisters. The Gospel of Mark 6:3 and the Gospel of Matthew 13:55-56 state that a James, Joses (or Joseph), Judas, and Simon were the brothers of Jesus, the son of Mary. The same verses also mention unnamed sisters of Jesus. And for the record, I’m Lutheran (protestant), and I have actually read the Bible.

Jesus had no brothers nor sisters….in most languages everyone is either brother or sister.. because there is no other word to describe cousins , besides in Middle eastern countries most times they address everyone brother or sister regardless of being a relative or not ..please explain this verse – 1 Corinthians 15:6 – “Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time,” …would you say he had 500 brothers ….

Mary – mother of James and Joseph (Joses), Judas (Jude), and Simon, (brothers & stepbrothers) were sons of the other Mary… Matthew 27:61 “Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb”. John 19: 25 “but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas”

And here is the clincher, if Jesus had so many brothers, isn’t it strange that he would ask his disciple John to take care of His Mother.. could you explain please….John 19:26 – When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!" 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to ahis own home.

Btw .Most Protestants believe that Jesus had siblings ..

Frances, you are a Catholic and like a good catholic you are defending “Maria semple vergine” or Mary always vergin; it is a fable, she was and is a blessed person for having being selected to bring the Lord into the world. And I am certain that she has received her reward in heaven. If we take her position any further than that, we ran the risk to put her above the Lord, or above God. I was in Rome in 1998 and I was listening to a talk back on “Radio Maria”, one listener asked the Bishop, “who is more powerful Jesus or Mary” the Bishop answered “they are equal.” It floored me. How can a Bishop of the Catholic Church be so ignorant of Jesus sovereignty. He should have known that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST, no body elses.
John 19:26-27, is an inserted lie, Jesus mother was not in Jerusalem at that time: if she was, with whom she spent the passover meal? She was no where to be seen or heard, until she turned up at the crucifiction. You should read John 19:25, where there was only Marys present, and only His mother sister did no deserve a name.
The New Testament was written in Greek. So, do you mean to tell me that the word cousin doesn’t exists in the Greek language?

It is very important to know in what contest that Bhisop was talking. If it was anything about demons or the devil himself, he might have used that phrase. But it is only because devil hates Mary, he does not like to be defeated by a human. Devil considers all humans are below him. He does not get too sad or dishonored by Jesus driving him out of things because he is God himself. And I do not know what hatred you have with Mary. We don’t pray to her because she grants our prayers, but because she can present our prayer infront of God who grants it. During the wedding Jesus said it is not yet His time, but when Mary asked Jesus to help them He did. We ask Mary to pray for us to the Lord our God. The same way we ask our parish priest or parents or grandparents to pray for us. There is no harm in it, is there? Nobody can take God place.

So much confusion here, there is only one God Almighty, only one! The similarity in the faiths comes from the origin which started in the beginning. Abraham and his two sons, two nations, in a way maybe battling for the highest seat, Look at the early beliefs if you want to see the similarities, it is in the reasoning for the changes that the real trouble started, The Jews did not all accept our Jesus, either, though now there are masiatic Jews who do and this is spreading, so there is hope for the other religions. We have to remember too, that in all religions, there are extremist, those who do not follow the faith of their elders, but choose violence and hatred to base their justification for murdering others who do not agree with them. There are lots of cults that base their groups on Christianity, yet do not follow it, they brainwash new recruits, much like the extremist and commit mass murder even among themselves., remember Waco, Texas? None of this should be respected or honoured, but we need to step back and realise that not all of the muslims are violent murderers and the genuine ones are against the militant groups as they know it makes life harder for the decent muslims. I thank God with all my heart that I was born and raised to know and believe in the God of love, who is the true and only God. When extremist follow violent ways, they are not following the ways of God, no matter what they call him, they are following an idol reffered to in the Bible as a God of War. This is in no way the Almighty creator.

Emily, You should know that the two sons of Abraham stands for two kind of religion, Ishmael the first son of Abraham stands for the man made religions of the world, for he was born because Abraham and his wife tried to help God’s promise of a son to Abraham come about, the second son of Abraham was the son of promise he stand for God’s church. however we should pay attention also to the two sons of Isaac; Esau and Jacob, Esau is in the church of God but he is fleshly and God doesn’t like that, Jacob is of the spirit and God loves him.

Since Christianity and Islam “are historically offshoots from Judaism," there are also strong but different connections for both within the Holy Land, the rabbi continued, stating that “the Christian connection is probably more direct" because “Jesus was Jewish and he lived in Jerusalem, he preached in Jerusalem, he visited the Temple Mount and the Christian Bible contains the Jewish Bible."

Jews and Muslims, don’t believe in Jesus as we do..although Muslims believe in His Virgin birth and His second coming and they revere Him as a Prophet that’s more than I can say about the Jews and how they regard Jesus, read the Bible to know how the Jews treated Jesus. … BTW every language has its own word for God .. if you did not know, Allah is the Arabic word for God..

Muslims do not believe we can have a “personal” relationship with God or that he is loving or that we are his children. My priest says that he does not think Muslims worship the same God at all. I am pretty sure this is a matter of opinion and not dogma or doctrine, as I find no information to indicate either way in the catechism.

Takiyya is defined as dissimulation about ones Muslim identity. It comes from the verse in the Quran that says, “Let believers not make friends with infidels in preference to the faithful – he that does has nothing to hope for from Allah – except in self-defense (illaa an-tattaqu minhum tuqah) (Surah 3:28). This “self-defense" justifies dissimulation. Islamic Sharia Law provides, “When it is possible to achieve an aim by lying but not by telling the truth, it is permissible to lie if attaining the goal is permissible, and lying is obligatory if the goal is obligatory." (Reliance of the Traveler, Para r8.2) Examples include lying to protect Islam or a Muslim.

All non-Muslims are considered infidels, what does this mean, it means that they can kill/rape/murder/lie/steal and its okay with their Allah. I have seen over the years the murderous cult kill innocent women and children all over the world. Lets say more recently the Iraqi Christians where little Christian Children had been beheaded, their homes/business/Bank accounts were taken away from them. Many that were trying to leave even had their cars taken away from them. The even put Christian women up for sale as sex slaves. Enough with trying to appease this cult please.

Muhammad died in 632 A.D. He died as a result of being poisoned following his attack upon and conquest of the Jewish settlement of Khaibar. Immediately following the conquest of Khaibar, a Jewish woman prepared a dinner for Muhammad and some of his men. Unknown to the Muslims was that she had put a poison into the lamb (some say goat) that was served at dinner. Muhammad ate some of the poisoned lamb and died as a result three years later. Muhammad was not a real prophet, he was a false prophet. He died as a result of eating poison that he didn’t know about. The poisoned lamb “spoke” to him too late. Only when he realized he was dying did Muhammad “spiritualize” his suffering and coming death. Prior to that he tried to get well. Moses knew about his coming death (Deut 34:1-5). Jesus also knew of His future death (Mark 8:32, 32). Yet Muhammad was in the dark until he himself realized he was going to die.

Jesus predicted false prophets would come into the world and mislead many (Matthew 24:24). Muhammad was such a false prophet. Both Jesus and Moses knew God face to face, Muhammad only had a spirit or angel he called “Gabriel” speaking to him. In the end, even this angel’s prayers were not answered by Allah. Could it be that this “Gabriel” was preaching a false religion (Galatians 1:8) to Muhammad? Could Gabriel have been a deceptive demon or Satan himself?

There is a reason why Muslims are NOT Christians. They do NOT believe in Jesus Christ. I am Catholic, and in my religion Jesus Christ IS OUR GOD. He divides himself into three…the father, the son, and the holy spirit. Muslims are NOT Christians, therefore we DO NOT worship or follow the same God.

  15. Lyllian Odile Crenshaw Reply

Muslims do worship the same God as we do: They worship the creator of this universe, Our God and their God, The Creator of rivers, mountains, plants, trees, stars, etc,…….the Great Creator who gave life to both you and me, the one who created the universe and established our world….if we who believe in this God, and they who also believe in this God pray to Him who IS GOD…..then its very logical that we believe in the same God….. God is the one who IS…the one who creates….
The Muslims, Jews, along with we Christian believe in the one who created ALL…
The difference is that we believe in the Trinity: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit….
Having said this, let us pray for our brothers and sisters who are Muslim (whom God created) and our brothers and sisters who are Jewish (whom God created) … Oh God Most Merciful, I pray that our brothers and sisters who believe in you (through Your Grace), experience in their lives a deep conversion to understand and see the fullness within the faith that You revealed to us through Jesus Christ…Come Holy Spirit, bring light into their spirits so they too may experience the power of Your Most Holy Trinity within their lives…Amen

I have sadly never read so much prejudice and ignorance! Christianity is about tolerance and respect for all. Christianity Islam and Judaism believe in the SAME God . Abraham is the father of all faiths! The crusades (which was started by the Christians) was a crime against humanity. How dare any of you judge “who’s God is better” when they are all the same. I suggest that we in the Catholic Church sort out our own problems before we have the cheek to criticise other faiths. Catholic priests, treatment of women within our own church! #distgusted

  17. Darla Reply

    Jesus is Lord. Period.

  18. Eric Reply

Debi, the crusaders were not started by the Christians, but were a respond to the Muslim invasion of Jerusalem. The first crusade was the only really successful crusade, freeing the city and returning the practice of allowing all Jews, Muslims and Christians to worship there in peace. That peace only lasted roughly 100 years before Muslims sacked Jerusalem again. The second and third crusades were waged to try and retake the city but neither were successful. Later crusades were sent to try and free other lands sacked by Muslims, but only a handful were all that successful. The most tragic outcome of the crusades was the Great Schism of the Eastern Church and Rome. During the fourth crusade, Constantinople was sacked by Roman crusaders.

All that aside, there is only one God and any religion that holds to that basic premise directs their intentions towards him. However, the Muslim and Jewish understanding of God is limited by their denial of Christ’s divinity. Christ is the fulfillment of the Old Testament, works that both Muslims and Jews hold to be the true word of God. They deny his divinity for many of the same reason some early and even modern day Christian sects deny Christ’s divinity, it’s a really uncomfortable thing to accept. Accepting that God so humbled to die for our sake removes any and all excuses we have to live in sin. Denying that divinity gives people an out, so to speak.

Lyllian, lovely prayer and I couldn’t agree more. Would that the whole of the earth were Catholic and lived as such, peace and love would flourish.

  19. aaron Reply

That’s just ignorant! They do not worship the same god. They deny Jesus as God in the flesh. 1 John 4:1 contradicts that because God says that if they don’t allege that Jesus came in the flesh, and thereby if they don’t allege TRUTH, they’re not right.

  20. Mario Simonelli Reply

All believers, regardless of denominational creed, search for the assurance of understanding about what is truth, because it seems that truth in this world is continually changing, as in what was true yesterday is no longer true today. However you can be assured that God’s universal truth is still the same as it has always been, unaltered and unalterable. As darkness cannot put out the light, even so lies and speculations cannot alter the truth. But unfortunately lies and speculations have the capacity to lure us to focus on other unimportant things. Those things may not be necessarily bad, nevertheless they are suffi-cient to cause us to miss the true purpose of our calling, which is to walk towards God’s universal, unchangeable truth.
You may well ask, what is God’s universal, unchangeable truth? Bear with me for a moment, and God willing I will try to point it out to you. In the gospel of John 18:33-38 we read of an exchange between Pilate the Roman governor and Jesus. It unfolds in the following manner: “Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium, and summoned Jesus, and said to Him, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ Jesus answered, ‘Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?’ Pilate answered, ‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priest delivered You up to me; what have You done?’ Jesus answered, ‘My Kingdom is not of this world, if My Kingdom were of this world, then My servant would be fighting, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.’ Pilate therefore said to Him, ‘So you are a King?’ Jesus answered: ‘You say correctly that I am a King. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’ Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’ And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, ‘I find no guilt in Him.’"
If we superficially read the above exchange between Pilate and Jesus we will also be left asking, “What is truth?" But if we look more closely, some interesting facts will emerge, such as “He has come into the world to bear witness to the truth." And then Jesus makes an extraordinary statement about the human race, “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." What does it mean? And how did Jesus, by coming into the world bear witness to the truth? Or how can anyone be of the truth? The answer of course, through God’s wisdom, is staring at us in the face. We can all see it, but it can’t be perceived, unless it is spiritually revealed to us.
By the wisdom of God, the answer to “What is truth?" came out from Pilate’s own mouth, in the form of his judgement of Jesus: “I find no guilt in Him." In other words, “He is holy, He is without sin." We can see that by being holy even unto death, He has fulfilled His primary mission, which speaks thus: “He has come into the world to bear witness to the truth." That is to say, Jesus has shown us in words and deeds how to be holy, or how to be of the truth (which is not by mere chance the heart of the gospel).
So we come to the most simple and worldwide-understood principle, because on the day that we are also to face judgement, that is all the truth that matters, for God will judge the world only according to our holiness or lack of it. Think about it. Is it possible to believe in God and yet practice sin? Is believing some denominational doctrine or an historical fact enough to be saved? Doesn’t even Satan believe?
But by the grace of God, we of the human race have been given a golden opportunity: “to be of the truth," which enables us to hear His still and holy voice. All we have to have is the sincere desire to be holy, (remember Cornelius Acts 10:1-4) and if we are a true believer that should not be too difficult for us. After that the Holy Spirit will lead each individual into repentance, for He knows the right way for each one of us as we obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit, our inner attitude toward our fellow men and ourselves will change for the better, until we are at peace with God, at peace with ourselves and with the world.
On the day of judgement the Righteous Judge also will utter from His mouth, “I find no guilt in him." On that day we will be changed from “who is of the truth" into “who is part of the truth."
Because “Truth" in God’s eyes is not only that which is contrary to falsehood, but it is also a state of existence, the day will come when only “Truth" will exist in eternity. Then we can confidently say that “Truth" is a state of unchanging holiness, the essence of God to which we, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ have become partakers.
In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I Am the ‘Way’, the ‘Truth’, and the ‘Life’; no one comes to the Father, but through Me". Yes!
He is the “Way" because we must follow the footsteps of His earthly life = Repentance
He is the “Truth" because He is the embodiment of unchanging holiness = God
He is also the “Life" because He is the eternal Word = Eternal life

What more is there to say? For I am fully convinced that if one doesn’t know anything about anything, but practises the beliefs that are in Jesus and/or lives his life by the principles of the gospel of holiness, he is acceptable to God.
Because God has no regard for religious denominations, for He only sees the sinners and the godly person who live a holy life. Nothing else matter for Him, it is written “you must be holy, for I am Holy.”
    Glory to God

A religion person needs the law because he is still living through his flesh, a true Christian who has the mind of Christ needs no law; for he always does the things that pleases the Lord. We get the mind of Christ when we have crucified our passions and desires of the flesh; And we can only do that if we have the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

If they “worship” the same god than it’s in vain, because worshipping god is to obey him, and we obey him by trusting in the one he has sent, Christ.

This actually denies two defined dogmas.
St. Thomas in his Summa Theologica, II, II. He says: “Now, man is more than ever separated from God by unbelief because he has not even true knowledge of God, and by a false knowledge of God man does not approach Him, but is severed from Him, nor is it possible for one who has a false opinion of God to know Him in any way at all because the object of His opinion is not God."

The first defined dogma that I want to talk about is the dogma that it’s impossible for God to approve false sects. This was proclaimed by Pope Leo XII in Ubi Primum, 1824. He said: “It is impossible for the Most True God, who is Truth itself, to approve all sects who profess false teachings." He goes on to say: “By divine faith we hold there is one Lord." So, it’s a dogma that the Church and God do not approve false sects. Islam is actually declared by the Magisterium to be a diabolical sect, and an abominable sect; so it’s actually a sect.

The other dogma it denies is the dogma that there is no true worship outside the Catholic Church. This dogma was proclaimed by Pope Gregory XVI in Summo Iugiter Studio, He says: “This is indeed the teaching of the Catholic Church: ‘The Holy Universal Church teaches that it is not possible to worship God truly except in her, and asserts that all who are outside of her are not saved,’" and refers to this as a dogma.

As far as Acts 17 goes, as St. Gregory Nyssa points out in his commentary on this passage: “they were mad with their idolatry." All St. Paul was saying in that passage is that, even though they were confessing that they did not know God, they were confessing in that act that which is true. He was not saying that they worship the true God outside of the Church, and especially while they worship idols. In fact, in Jerome’s translation, he uses superstitiosiores, which is superstitious.

In John 4:23-24, Jesus says that “God is a Spirit, and they that adore Him must adore Him in Spirit and in Truth." So, in the New Covenant, in order to truly adore God, you have to do it in truth, and in acceptance of Christ, of course. Well, the Muslims reject Christ

it is the teaching of the Catholic Church, not only that Islam is an abominable sect, but that Islam and its adherents are pagans. This was declared in a bull to the universal Church by Pope Calixtus III, in which he wrote to the entire Church and he instituted a prayer that must be said against the Muslims called the Missa Contra Paganos: The Mass Against the Pagans, declaring that they are pagans. It’s also interesting that throughout the Crusade literature the Muslims are considered pagans because that’s what the Church has taught about them. They are not worshippers of the true God. Pagans obviously do not worship the true God. Pope Pius II referred to the Turks, who were the Muslims, as ‘godless.’ I already quoted Eugene IV and Calixtus III. Pope Pius II referred to Mohammed as the ‘False Prophet’ and their practices as ‘Mohammetan abominations.

These are quotes taken from a debate that Brother Peter Diamond had. You can find more information on their website at

I think, it is not the way people resembling the way they pray, but it is the way them love one another and they feel they are one and belong to the same God and therefore live at peace with all humanity. That can say it all whether they pray to the same God or to different gods. Because it is in the sameness of faith and worship where people discover they are one, despite their political stances, regional proximity or race.

From Judaism comes Christianity coz we are the followers of the Christ. All the prophets including Jesus were Jews. Mohamad is the only non-Jewish prophet in the whole lot, can muslims claim to follow the same God just coz they borrowed the same prophets?

Don’t be deceived.Muslim worship Allah he is the moon God.when Mohammad met a angel in the cave he thought its demon.letter he told that is gibril.Quran teachings exact opposite of Christianity.they beleive a different Jesus ( isa) and Muslims say he comes at end time break the cross and stops jazia tax so either convert to islam or die.according to Islam, calling JESUS as son of God ,is blasphemy. So Jesus tells end days many will be beheaded or killed because killing Jesus followers they think they serve the God, but actually they serve Satan.

A would be contractor came into my house. We started talking about religion…turned out he was muslim. This man told me lies I had never heard in my life. He said Jesus was not crucified on the cross…God would not have allowed his prophet to die such a death…. He said that Jesus actually switched places with Judas Iscariot(the betrayer) shortly before he was sent before Pilate and that because Jesus looked like all his apostles, no one noticed………just insane. (The things people will believe )

He had not heard of the Pentecost, how the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, Mary( Mother of Jesus) and others and they all spoke in different languages l….the beginning of the spread of the gospel of Christ. It seems as if Islam is built on lies…..all sort of lies.. There is only one true and living God… Jehovah. He so loved the world that He sent His only begotten son, Jesus the Christ…to earth for us ( God in flesh). If you just believe that he did this for you and for your sins, you shall not perish but have life everlasting. Get the facts.. and Believe!!!!!!

Don’t be confused by human logic and literal understanding. No human or superhuman can pay the ransom of death and sin of the world but only God thru the death of His Son on the cross can pay the debt He didn’t owe for the salvation of human to reconcile with God the Father. So, Jesus has to come on earth as flesh like human , the Living Word of God, as a testimony and salvation. For the simple understanding that a Spirit cannot be killed but a human flesh can so Jesus would die on the cross for human redemption.
