How do I answer the charge that Catholics worship the pagan goddess Ishtar because we refer to Mary as Queen of Heaven?

Full Question

What is the answer to a friend who says we are worshiping the Babylonian goddess Ishtar when we honor Mary? He uses Jeremiah 44 as proof because we call Mary the Queen of Heaven.

Answer

The fact that a pagan deity was known as the queen of heaven doesn’t mean this term can’t rightfully be applied, in another sense altogether, to Mary. The pagan king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, is called the king of kings by Daniel (Dn 2:37), yet this doesn’t preclude Jesus from being called by the same title (Rv 17:14; 19:16).

Since the destiny of all Christians is to reign as kings and queens with Christ in heaven (Eph 2:12; Rv 1:6; 5:10), and since Mary is the preeminent Christian, there’s nothing wrong with giving her the title which Christ, the King of Kings, bestowed upon her in making Mary his mother.

I have never seen in the Bible that Mary is the Queen of Heaven! Lord Jesus Christ is my savior, not Mary!

      1. Lea Leger Reply

All Christians believe Lord Jesus Christ is our savior, Mary is the mother of our savior Jesus Christ. Mama Mary is our spiritual mother. Why? Jesus entrusted his mother to the apostle at the foot of the cross before he died. Jesus said behold “this is your mother” from that on, the apostle took Mary home. Mary is one the first Christians. Mary is Full of grace, and blessed among women. God Mary is a holy child, pure and pre destined to become the mother of God.Mary was given the grace to be saved completely from sin, so that she never committed even the slightest transgression(Eph. 2 v 8-9) Luke 1 v 47 God saved Mary from all sin.

This is just man’s reasoning. There is no Scripture whatsoever that validates Mary being the Queen of heaven. Even though she is the mother of Jesus, that did not make her such. She is not divine in any way; and so to treat her in any way that brings worship to her, is prohibited by God Himself. I know that Catholics deny this, yet their practice contradicts what they say. Amen.

Mary is in the bible, but your Pastor is NOT in the bible….Why then you honor your Pastor? I need your answer Lasaro Flores!

I think it was written in the book of revelation. It is on revelation 12:1 “A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.…” So there you can find the notion that she is the queen of heaven. If you believe in miracles and apparition, try to research on Our lady of Guadalupe.

Anyhow, Mary is the Mother of Church as Jesus states on John 19:27 “When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.” So as Christians, we should honor our Mother as this was part of ten commandments that is morally binding for us.

As predicted by the Angel who appeared onto Mary Luke 1:48 “For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;”. And yes, Catholics pray the rosary and call Mary blessed.

Not all doctrines are explicitly stated in the Bible, but was derive from verses ex. Holy trinity, purgatory, sacrament of confession, papacy etc. Some major example of protestant doctrine that can’t be found in the bible is “faith alone saves” and “bible alone is the source infallible truth”. These doctrines actually contradicts what are stated in the bible. But ofcourse even if Catholics prove these doctrines to be heretical, you will not believe as even some Jews did not believe on Jesus even with his miracle works. God bless.

There is no record in the Bible of Mary’s death. Does that mean she is still here on earth? The Bible ended in AD 90 with the last gospel that was written and was not collated for several hundred years. There was no Bible when the Church was growing. The Church did not end; the Bible did. Being Queen of Heaven does not mean Mary is a divine being. It is simply a title that honors her as the Mother of Jesus Christ. Adoration is given to God alone, for all the ladies who say they just “adore” Vera Wang. The Anglican wedding vows read, “With my body I thee worship.” Do you think that means, in the Church of England, a man is required to treat his wife as if she was a divine being?
It simply means that worship has more than one meaning. Our practices follow our faith in Jesus Christ and in His Church, which He founded on Peter. You need a good Bible dictionary, a course on the history of the early Church, a good commentary, and some study of the Protestant Reformation which was led by those who protested against the Church Christ founded and who wanted churches founded by men and not by Christ

Lasaro Flores the angel Gabriel bowed down to Mary in the annunciation. If the holy angels do that to Mary who are we to not show her the great respect she is due?? Also we do not worship Mary. Mary herself tells us that it is her greatest desire to bring us closer to Jesus! To not honor Mary is to insult GOd Who chose her to be the mother of His Son Jesus. Enough said.

We dont worship mary . we honor and venerate her for she is the mother of Jesus Christ our Savior. She is our powerful intercessor as what happened in the wedding feast at cana .Mother Mary ask Jesus to turn water into wine .Jesus can not refuse His mother and so the miracle of turning water into wine happened

The Son’s existence did not begin in Mary’s womb, He has existed before creation. Colossians 1:17, He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. He is Divine, Mary was not nor is any other being. To be all-knowing, ever present, and all powerful are the traits of Diety. There is no other but God, has been and will always be, no beginning and no end. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, has been and will always be, no beginning and no end. In Romans 9:5, Paul explains Jesus’s genealogy, according to the flesh, but according to His deity, He is the eternal God.

    Mathew 7:1 – 5.

Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Through Mary is given us a most perfect and surest path to Christ. Jesus could not even enter the world of mankind till there was a perfect and willing vessel which was Mary. To deny Christ mother is to deny Christ and to deny Christ is to deny God and is to do the work of Lucifer! Its through Mary which comes Lucifers downfall her son Jesus the son of God. For it was through a women that Lucifer did temp mankind to fall from grace so through a most perfect woman does God send his son Christ to destroy Lucifer reign in the physical world and have Lucifer cast into hell in a lake of fire for eternity! To belittle, degrade, make light of the queen of heaven is to do Lucifers will and have thyself be cast into the lake of fire with the fallen angels and all the damned

There is a better answer that is based on the Old Testament where King Solomon’s mother was the very powerful Queen Mother who sat on a throne with a crown on her head. She was the intercessor for the people who wanted favors from the king.

Luke gospel chapter 1:45 Elizabeth filled with the Holy Spirit says “Blessed is she who believe, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord” and before this, verse 42 she spoke out with a loud voice ” Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!. Now see verse 48 Mary herself spoke this of herself “…..henceforth all generations will call me blessed”. The above drama took place before Our Lord Jesus Christ was born. Many years later it came pass, see Luke 11:27 ” And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You”. If what was prophesied by two God fearing women came to pass in their time then tell me won’t we Catholics follow suit. The problem of some of us who claim we’re Christians is, we twist the real meaning of the Scripture to suit our own understanding instead of the other way round and by so doing confuse ourselves. God has told us that our thoughts and ways can never be the same with His ( Isaiah 55). So let us always ask the Holy Spirit to teach us and give us understanding before studying the Bible not reading it. God bless you.
