Italian, Polish bishops welcome papal appeal to house refugees

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco of Genoa, president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, said that Pope Francis’s appeal to each European parish to house a refugee family represents an intensification of “the commitment and effort that all Italian dioceses are doing for some time.”

The bishops’ conference, he said, working quickly to implement the appeal, and he expected that the nation’s 27,133 parishes will shelter more than 108,000 people.

Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki of Poznan, the president of the Polish Episcopal Conference, asked every parish to begin to prepare to shelter refugees, <i>L’Osservatore Romano</i> reported.
