Oregon gunman was targeting Christians, eyewitness claims

Chris Harper-Mercer was reportedly asking victims their religion before shooting them

The gunmen who killed at least 9 people at a college shooting in the US state of Oregon, was targeting Christians, eye witnesses are reporting.

Twenty-six-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer opened fire on students and staff yesterday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, southwestern Oregon, before he was killed in a police shoot out.

“The shooter was lining people up and asking if they were Christian,” wrote a woman claiming her grandmother was in one of the rooms attacked, according to the New York Post.

“If they said yes, then they were shot in the head. If they said no, or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs. My grandma just got to my house, and she was in the room. She wasn’t shot, but she is very upset.”

On his online dating profile, Harper-Mercer, registered his “dislike” of organised religion.

He was reportedly born in Britain and moved to the US when he was a young boy.

Following the shootings, President Obama demanded tighter gun laws, saying prayers are “no longer enough”.
