Are Catholics required to tithe 10 percent of their income to the Church?

Full Question

Are Catholics required to tithe 10 percent of their income to the Church?

Answer

Catholics are under no obligation to tithe a certain percentage of their income to the Church. The Church does require the following:

  • The fifth precept (“You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church”) means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability. . . The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own abilities. (CCC 2043)
  • The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what is necessary for divine worship, for apostolic works and works of charity, and for the decent sustenance of ministers. They are also obliged to promote social justice and, mindful of the precept of the Lord, to assist the poor from their own resources. (CIC 222)

  • The Church does not specifically mandate a tithe, but several verses in the bible indicate that Catholics should still tithe.
Leviticus 27:30 – All tithes of the land, whether in grain from the fields or in fruit from the trees, belong to the LORD; they are sacred to the LORD.
Malachi 3:8-11 – Can a man cheat God? Yet you are cheating me. You ask, “How are we cheating you?” In the matter of tithes and dues. The curse lies on you because you, yes you the whole nation, are cheating me. Bring the full tithes and dues to the storehouse so that there may be food in my house, and then see if I do not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you in abundance.
Deuteronomy 14:22-23 – Every year you must take a tithe of all that your sowing yields on the land and in the presence of Yahweh your God, in the place he chooses to give his name a home… so shall you learn to fear Yahweh your God always.

  • If tithing is not mandatory why then does the church maintain lists of faithful who pay the 10% and incidentally they are the ones who are treated as the bona fide members of the church.

  • 10 percent TITHE is collected only those who are Mortals, and since Jesus Christ is Risen and Alive forever and a Priest forever, the forever Pastor for us, his church never collected that...reference from HEB 7
