Full Question

Can grandparents be godparents for their grandchild?

Part of the reason for having godparents is to help provide for the child’s upbringing in the Catholic faith. It is important that the ages of the godparents would enable them to do this if the parents die or become incapacitated in some way. If the grandparents are young enough, there is no problem. Canon law does not forbid it.
