Did you know Padre Pio was nearly killed by the devil but Mary saved him? If there is one thing the devil hates more than anything in the world, it is the conversion of sinners. St Padre Pio was known as a man of many miracles. He healed the sick, prophesied, was known to read hearts, he could bilocate and had the stigmata. However, there is one miraculous power he had that put a target on his back: his power to convert hearts to God.

There have been stories of holy people whose journey to see Padre Pio began by scornful doubts and ended in repentant tears. No one hates this more than the devil who uses everything he has to keep souls caged.

Even though many people loved Pio, he also had many enemies. But it was his spiritual enemies that caused him the most pain.

According to the book Padre Pio: The True Story published by Our Sunday Visitor by C. Bernard Ruffin. Late in the Saints life a demoniac stopped by and started hurling threats and insults at Pio

As soon as he approached, accompanied by Padre Eusebio, the woman leaped at him, screaming incomprehensible words in a deep, hoarse voice. She tried to scratch his face, but both he and Padre Eusebio were able to keep their distance.“I was terrified,” Padre Eusebio wrote,“but Padre Pio less so.”

“In the Name of God, go away!” Padre Pio yelled, moving past the madwoman, who didn’t follow, but kept screaming, “I’ll make you pay! I’ll make you pay!

She was taken away by another priest who started an exorcism on her.

Vengeance

A little after ten o’clock that night, the friars on the floor where Padre Pio lived heard “a frightful thud.” Padre Eusebio wrote that it was “an incredible noise, as if the big door of the church was being slammed.” Then they heard Padre Pio crying, “Brothers! Brothers!”

The monks hurried in and found Padre Pio of the floor, bleeding from his face. Thankfully the cushion from his kneeler kept his head from suffering a major blow. Now his face looked bruised and his eyes black from the attack the night before. The next day the woman possessed by the devil was back in the crowd and taunted Pio.

“Ah, I got my vengeance on that miserable old man!” Moreover, she kept shouting, “Ah, that cushion! That cushion!”

A Mother’s care

[W]hen the priest who had been trying to exorcize her the day before began once more, the woman shrieked,“Where were you last night? I was upstairs to see the old man I hate so much because he is a source of faith. I would have done more, only the White Lady stopped me.” It was said that the cushion found under Padre Pio’s head was put there by the Virgin Mary.

The woman was eventually freed from the evil spirit and was grateful for the Saint’s prayers.
