Do I tithe 10 percent of my gross income or 10 percent of my net income?

Full Question

I’m not sure how much I’m supposed to be tithing. Is it 10 percent of my gross income or 10 percent of my net income?

The obligation to tithe (i.e., to give 10 percent of one’s gross income) was binding only on the Jews. Jesus fulfilled the Mosaic law (Matt. 5:17), so even Jews are no longer bound by it. But this doesn’t mean we’re not obligated to support the Church—we are—but there is no longer a specific percentage required. Scripture provides insight on how Christians should give:
On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper. (1 Cor. 16:2)
The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Cor. 9:6–7)
There is no mandatory requirement to give a specific amount of money or percentage of our income. We should each decide for ourselves how much to give and then do so in the true spirit of giving a gift.

  1. Please what is the meaning of the scripture in mal:3:10 hence every word of God is inspired by the holy spirit.

  2. 2 Cor 9:7 says ‘Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.’ What is the meaning of.’….as already determined….?

  3. I have hate a lot about this. They use Malachi chapter 3 as a basis. I also heard that not tIthing could be a result of people having financial problems. 0

    • That is what televangelist like to preach as they proclaim the “name it and claim it” “health and weath” gospel.

  4. Here is my confusion it says at beginning of each week set something aside and store it up but how is that giving…..when should I give it the church? End of year? Or every few months? Or guess it don’t really matter when….

  5. So does all the social security and taxes I pay counts. I still give but not sure if I give enough and if I should subtract the taxes and social security I give. 🙂
