Full Question

Sometimes I mix the mysteries of the rosary and meditate on different parts of Jesus’ life, not necessarily on the prescribed day. I never thought about it until someone said it was disrespectful. Does the rosary have to be said in a certain way to be effective?

Answer

When you are praying the rosary privately, you can mix and match. The object of the rosary in prayer. If you want to pray for five decades, meditating on one mystery, it’s fine. There is absolutely nothing disrespectful in this.

  1. When I pray my Rosary I often ask a saint to help me pray. For example if I am praying for my children I ask St. Monica to help me pray. Do you think this is o.k ?

  2. I mix the rosary from English, for kids, to Spanish, for the hubby, and closing in English, is that ok? Also, is it OK not to pay the litany, or is it a must?

  3. It is much better to meditate as meditating on the mystery also helps us to see where we’ve failed to live like Jesus in our own lives. And as we are supposed to meditate upon the mystery, I really think it would be much better, not just for yourself, but for your relationship with God too to know clearer who He is by meditating on His life

  4. Hi Georges Kawkabany, I do not know the answer to your question, but my wife and I say the rosary together in the morning. I have to admit, that often times my mind wonders to subjects that are totally off topic, actually have nothing to do with the prayers I am reciting. I am sure that diminishes the quality of the prayer, so I try to think of the person or thing I want to pray for.
Although our saying the rosary is far from perfect, I am sure God receives it and loves every syllable. Our own children have often made presentations to us that were less than perfect, but we loved them all the more for it

  5. I read somewhere you can take any story from the Bible and meditate on it as well. F.e., if you pray about recovery, you can meditate on Jesus healing someone.

  6. I sometimes pray the rosary as a thank you to our Lord and the Blessed Mother. Into each of the prayers, I insert the words “Thank you” to express my deep appreciation for all the prayers that have been answered or blessings I have received. Example: “Our Father who art in heaven, thank you and hallowed be thy name” “Holy Mary, Mother of God, thank you for continuing to pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.”

  7. Sometimes, I have a hard time meditating on any mystery while trying to say the rosary as reverently has I can. Hard time doing 2 things at one time, I guess.

  8. Hello..thanks your continous guidance on our catholic faith.my question is closely related…is listening to the rosary the same as praying it…sometimes at work I just put my earphones on and tune in to my rosary app but continue working.

    1. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I think that praying the Rosary would be better. You might not always have the time to as you’re a working person, but know that you can pray it throughout the day. For example one decade during your lunch break, one decade when you reach home, 2 decades after you shower, and a decade before you sleep. After all, if you just continue working while listening to a recording of the rosary, you won’t be meditating on the mysteries, and your heart won’t be in each verse of the prayers in it. No pressure to pray it perfectly, since we’re not perfect, but pray it thankfully, faithfully, and sincerely, knowing Mother Mary’s intercession is a great blessing. There’s a cool history of the rosary too with Mother Mary’s promises in it.

    1. Rosary is about meditate the mystery that contain in the Rosary, so that we can obtain what is it in the Rosary. So, i think it is necessary to meditate the mysteries.
