How can I explain the Trinity to a Oneness Pentecostal?

Full Question

How can I explain the Trinity to a “Oneness” Pentecostal who says that Jesus is the only God and that the Father and the Holy Spirit are manifestations and not different persons of the Divinity? And how can I explain baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost when this person insists on Acts 2:38, repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus? He claims the name of the three persons, or manifestations in his view, is Jesus.

In Matthew 28:19 Jesus explicitly commands his apostles to baptize in the name of the Trinity. This is where the Church received the Trinitarian formula. It wasn’t some pope’s idea. In Acts 2:38 the author is not presenting a liturgical formula. He is concerned with distinguishing Christ’s baptism from John the Baptist’s. The practice of the early Church was thoroughly Trinitarian. For further information, go to

  1. Read the book “Delighting in the Trinity” by Michael Reeves. Why is God love? BECAUSE GOD IS A TRINITY. Why can we be saved? BECAUSE GOD IS A TRINITY. How are we able to live the Christian life? BECAUSE GOD IS A TRINITY.

    • What the Bible Says:
THE NAME OF THE FATHER, SON, AND HOLY GHOST IS LORD JESUS CHRIST. The actions of the Apostles in the Book of Acts prove this to be true.
1.) Acts 2:38 JEWS – “Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ.
2.) Acts 8:16 SAMARITANS – They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
3.) Acts 10:48 GENTILES – He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Lord Jesus.
4.) Acts 4: 12 PETER TAUGHT – There is none other name given whereby we must be saved.
5.) Col 3:17 PAUL TAUGHT – Whatever you do, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  2. Peter said to believe and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ because the people he was talking to were probably some of the same people that had crucified Jesus and they needed to know that Jesus Christ was and Is still the ONLY WAY.

    • John 14: 15 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” 26 “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in My name-“

  3. Best explanation I have been given & now explain is a metaphor using the sun…. The Father is the sun as in the heaven, the centre. Jesus is the sun light as he us the light of the world. The holy spirit is the heat of the sun as he is the fire of faith in our lives. They are all one and individually identifiable at the same time…

      • no one was baptized in 3 title or 3 lords father son spirit in the bible if so who was he ? what because that know what his name is JESUS 4 times always in JESUS name one lord act 19/1 no outer name give were we can be save act 4/12

        • Hi, Sonny. You don’t actually know the formula used in any Baptism in Acts. You know that Peter said in Acts 2:38 to be baptized in Jesus’ name but that Greek “to onoma” can mean “on the authority of”. But that does not necessarily require that those exact words be said over someone being baptized. The Lord Himself commanded to baptize in the Triune form in Matthew. I know that you’ve been taught that “the Name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit is Jesus” but that is completely unsupportable by the rest of the Bible. That is an invention of 20th Century men unknown throughout the history of the Church except by proven and scripturally refuted heretics… the error called “Modalism” resurrected by Charles Parham and others after Azusa Streeet. (Note: Most non-Pentecostals have no idea what I’m talking about. Oneness folks do)
I wrote a 4 part article on the subject of the Trinity that you can read here:

    • John 14: 15 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” 26 “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in My name-“

    • 1 John 5:7 says, “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.” This wasn’t created by the church 2 or 300 years later it was a fundamental belief from the beginning. I get that you go to Hear O’ Israel the LORD, the LORD your God is One… But this isn’t a denial of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 but a statement found in a series of places throughout the New Testament that shows God in Three Persons. You’ll keep running to the one God argument while ignoring the clarity of the rest of scripture.

    • Hi, Kevin. The verses you cite, specifically Deuteronomy 6:5, doesn’t say that Yahweh is a numerical “one”. The Hebrew word used there is “echad” and it is used in other places to denote “unity” rather than a numerical “one”. Context is the key and in this case context means the balance of what the Old and New Testament says on the subject.
Many times in the New Testament the Lord refers to both the Father and the Holy Spirit in the third person singular “He”. He never referred to either of Them as “I”. I know you’ve been taught that when the Lord prayed to the Father that it was “the flesh praying to the spirit” but that is completely unsupportable in Scripture. The fact that the Father spoke after the Baptism of the Son by John the Baptist (at which the Holy Spirit is also present) as well as on the Mount of Transfiguration cannot be dismissed. Was God seeking to create confusion among these simple fishermen or showing a distinction between the Son and the Father.
In John 17 in Jesus’ long prayer with the Father He asks that we might be one even as He and the Father are One. If “one” only means a numerical “one” then the Lord is praying for His Church to be some freakish monstrosity where everyone in it becomes the exact same person. Finally, when the Lord died on the Cross He said “Father, into thine hands I commend my spirit”. not “into MY hands I commend My spirit”
Obviously, the panoply of the Scripture speaks against defining “echad” as a numerical “one”. Rather it is a “oneness” of unity and of substance… just what is taught by the Creed created to combat Modalism in the early years of the Church. The Modalism taught by Oneness Pentecostalism (UPCI, so-called Apostolic churches, etc.) denies the full Person-hood of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It makes nonsensical a good part of what the Gospels report about the relationship of the Persons both prior to the Incarnation and after. It denies what the Apostles wrote in their letters to the Churches that form the balance of the New Testament.
I wrote a 4 part series on the subject of The Trinity on Catholic365.Com that may give you more light on this. You can access it here:
If you have more questions or wish to discuss this i’ll be glad to help. May God bless you as you seek the fulness of Truth.

    • Truth.
Baptism in the titles “Father”, “Son”, and “Holy Ghost” (or Spirit) was not a thing until after the Catholic church became a thing around 300 AD, and was not the official doctrine of the Catholic Church until the Council of Nicea, which took place in 325 AD.
Here’s the thing. You cannot explain a trinity, because there is no trinity. I grew up Catholic, spent more than two decades believing the myth, and in my lifetime there have been two nuns in my family, and when the older one died, I learned that the generation before her had two nuns and two brothers. It wasn’t until late in my thirties that God opened my eyes to the fact that he is one, and his name is Jesus. A oneness Pentecostal who has been filled with the Spirit as evidenced by the speaking in other tongues has EXPERIENCED Jesus in a way that no one else can fathom, and therefore that Pentecostal is NEVER going to buy into the myth of the so-called trinity. I was raised in the trinity, and after I EXPERIENCED Jesus, I now understand that I was taught a bunch of gobbeldey-gook. Something that is not Biblical.
Here is what the Bible says:
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah told us way back in the Old Testament that Jesus was God. It says that a child is born, a son is given – AND HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED…. THE MIGHTY GOD, THE EVERLASTING FATHER. Jesus, the son, shall be called the Father. Jesus IS the Father. Jesus IS the son. Jesus IS the Holy Spirit. Jesus, the God that created us, is able to take on ANY form that he chooses. He took on the form of a burning bush, did he not???
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” Matthew 28:19
This verse is oft-misused by those who baptize in the titles instead of the name. Let’s break it apart. It says “name”. Not “names”. Name is singular, not plural. There is only one name. Jesus. The others are titles. Jesus said to baptize in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. He said it to a handful of guys who spent three and a half years with him, so you’d think they would understand what he meant better than a handful of people who lived in 325 AD and made a decree at the Council of Nicea, right? So how did those guys, the guys who walked with Jesus, baptize?
“Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:37-39
So Peter, the alleged first pope of the Catholic Church (which didn’t exist until 300 years later) said to do it in the name of Jesus.
“(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)” Acts 8:16.
“And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.” Acts 10:48
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:5
The Apostles baptized in the name of Jesus. So who is wrong? The guys who walked with him for three and a half years (the same number of years that will be the great tribulation, by the way), or the guys who lived three centuries later. I’ll take the guys who walked with him.
As a side note, if you want to know what the Bible says about the Catholic Church, read Revelation 17 and 18. The city of Rome is the City of 7 hills. The Catholic Church is Mystery Babylon the Great. Her daughters are the protestant churches that follow her formula for baptism. What color do Bishops and Cardinals wear? Scarlet and Purple (I can never remember which is which, though). What color is the chalice that the priest drinks from? That cup full of abominations… The blood of the saints? Well, the Catholic Church has killed more Christians than any other organization. What does Jesus say about those people in the Catholic church (and by extension, the protestant churches)? He says this:
“And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” Revelation 18:4 He warns us – and I am in that number – to “come out of her”.

  4. As for Matt 28:19, it says name of the father, etc. I ask, what is the name? And i must openly disagree with the answer sbove, in the begining, there was no trinity. In fact history proves the the trinity is a Catholic false teaching. Like infant baptism, praying to dead saints, etc.

    • John 14: 15 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” 26 “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in My name-“

    • Amen i agree! The answer given is so predictable, most oneness children can true matt 28:19, and explain to a trintarian exactly why that is an outline formula, not a”repeat after me” name. In fact, it is not the Name at all! Sorry guys….the correct answer is, there IS no way to convince a REAL oneness child of God that there is a trinity– they have a relationship and revelation that no man’s reasoning will touch…. and they know the same scriptures! And Love them!

  5. Many religious people say that Jesus is God. Some claim that God is a Trinity. According to this teaching, “the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and yet there are not three Gods but one God.” It is held that the three “are co-eternal and co-equal.” (The Catholic Encyclopedia) Are such views correct?
Jehovah God is the Creator. (Revelation 4:11) He is without beginning or end, and he is almighty. (Psalm 90:2) Jesus, on the other hand, had a beginning. (Colossians 1:15, 16) Referring to God as his Father, Jesus said: “The Father is greater than I am.” (John 14:28) Jesus also explained that there were some things neither he nor the angels knew but that were known only by his Father.—Mark 13:32.
Moreover, Jesus prayed to his Father: “Let, not my will, but yours take place.” (Luke 22:42) To whom was Jesus praying if not to a superior Personage? Furthermore, it was God who resurrected Jesus from the dead, not Jesus himself. (Acts 2:32) Obviously, the Father and the Son were not equal before Jesus came to the earth or during his earthly life. What about after Jesus’ resurrection to heaven? First Corinthians 11:3 states: “The head of the Christ is God.” In fact, the Son will always be in subjection to God. (1 Corinthians 15:28) The Scriptures therefore show that Jesus is not God Almighty. Instead, he is God’s Son.
The so-called third person of the Trinity—the holy spirit—is not a person. Addressing God in prayer, the psalmist said: “If you send forth your spirit, they are created.” (Psalm 104:30) This spirit is not God himself; it is an active force that he sends forth or uses to accomplish whatever he wishes. By means of it, God created the physical heavens, the earth, and all living things. (Genesis 1:2; Psalm 33:6) God used his holy spirit to inspire the men who wrote the Bible. (2 Peter 1:20, 21) The Trinity, then, is not a Scriptural teaching.

    • John 14: 15 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” 26 “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in My name-“

  6. To Jesus was this addressed: But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.(Heb.1:8). If the father said He is God, why doubt it? He Jesus was there in the beginning, the very beginning, the beginning of anything created because all things were made by him, for he had no beginning, he was with the father from beginning, (John.1:1-3) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…”. Same is for the spirit who was also there from the beginning, who moved over the waters when the earth had no form: (Gen.1:2) “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters”. That’s why God used a plural when He said “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Gen. 1:26).
Baptize them in the name of the father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

  7. John 1:1
IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
(If I am with a person then I am not alone. Scripture was clear to distinguish in this verse. Scripture cannot contradict itself. You have take into consideration all scripture.
As far as Mathew 28? Ask a oneness doctrine person this….. Is it wrong to baptize the way Jesus told us with his own words?? They will say yes and that we should be baptized according to acts 2:38.

    • Wrong answer Greg, As a oneness Pentecostal person we do believe the words of Matthew 28:19….name is singular, baptize in the singular name of the father, son , and Holy Ghost. Jesus said I come in my fathers name and since the Holy Ghost is a spirit not a person the name of all three singular name is Jesus.

      • Amen! I knew Matt 28:19 as well as Acts4:12 and Acts 2:38, and others, before i was 10 years old! Yes, wrong answer indeed: for the most proof-inspiring trinity scriptures( so called) we also use to explain Oneness! And none can combat why Jesus is called a the Everlasting Father, The Mighty God (Is 9:6) and the Almighty (Rev 1:8)….

  8. If Jesus is not Divine then his sacrifice on the Cross isnt extraordinary!!! It will b like all human sacrifices of old. One thing that has made my faith strong and exceptional as a Staunch Catholic is this MYSTERY that God the Son died for my sins and rose for my justification!!!

  9. I am a convert from Adventismand Jehovah’s witnesses before becoming a catholic. Let me confess that the Arian heresy that is held as doctrine especially by the Jehovah’s witnesses has relegated if not watered down Jesus’s sacrifice. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is spot on, Three distinct Persons in one Divine Essence. Just as 7or more billion people rally under the banner HUMANITY regardless of color, gender, creed, so also the 3 distinct Persons rally under one banner DIVINITY. forward with the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity. It has Biblical roots for those who do not read the Bible literally. Mt 3:13_17. Trinity at work at Jesus’s baptism.

  10. Thank you Syncan for your explanation. I want to use an example of water to describe the Trinity. Looking at liquid water, solid water(ice) and gaseous water (steam) all have the same chemical composition(different natures). Does it make liquid, ice and steam different? So God the Father, God the Son ans God the Holy Spirit are one person in three different natures.

    • The problem here is, go drink a cup of steam. Or go swim in a pool of ice cubes. Its all H20, but its NOT the same, at all! In fact, chemical bonds are weakened and broken to form various forms, and as steam distills back into water, there is ALWAYS some that is lost. Yet theActual trintarian definition claims, coequality, copowerful, coexistence…..may i remind you that The Holy Ghost couldn’t even be poured out till Jesus’s was glorified?

  12. Actually there is no where in the bible do you see the word trinity, and how do you explain deutorotomy 6:4 hear o is real the lord god is one lord, so there is no such thing as a trinity.

  13. No where in the Bible can you find the words God the Son or God the Holy Ghost. There is only ONE God, the son of God was the flesh, the Holy Ghost is the Spirit of God. Its all in him the mighty God is Jesus. No trinity never has been never will be. God alone formed the heaven’s and earth. St. John 4:24 God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship (him) not them in Spirit and (Truth).

    • John 14: 15 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” 26 “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in My name-“

  14. Are you people forgetting the 10 commandments? The word of God does not change to suit the times. “I am the LORD your God, You should worshp no other God before me. There is only one God. Think!!!

    • Oneness believe that exactly. For we believe that Jesus IS that one God of Ten Commamdments, known as Jehovah in the Old testament, and thatHe also came after his death to indwell us as The Holy Ghost. One God, working in various ways, named Jesus. That is the exact quarrel we habe with trinitarians. For they believe there are 3 “persons” in a Godhead. This is unbiblical, and a True Oneness will never bend from the Bible

  15. Oneness Pentecostals already know why you think there is a trinity, and they already know why that is false. No need to try and share that with one of us….we’d be ever so glad to help you understand who Jesus really is though!

    • Exactly! So if someone needs to talk to you, they don’t need to worry which title they’re addressing you by – it’s not relevant how many capacities or roles you fill – nor do they need to ask your mother to speak to you on their behalf….they simply call you by your name. It’s easy…really.

      • Hi, Mike and Susan. What you have just described is not Trinity but rather the error of “Modalism”. Mike is a single entity known by different titles, but the titles are incapable of loving each other, of communicating with one another or of sending one another. God is not like an actor wearing different masks in different acts of a play… behind which is the same actor. The Father is distinct from the Son and the Holy Spirit and They from Him. The Father is said to love the Son and the Son the Father. The Son prayed to the Father. They are both said to have sent the Holy Spirit. Mike’s titles are incapable of doing any of that… in fact if they did he’d be said to have a mental illness. 🙂
It’s best to stick to “thus saith the Lord” and not human analogies that come up short of wander into error as this one does.
There is no doctrine which fully recognizes both the Deity and the Person-hood of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit than the Trinity. There is no other doctrine that doesn’t play Scripture against Scripture. That’s why the Church formulated it very early on and defended it in Creeds and Councils for 2,000 years. God bless.

        • Trinity = false doctrine created by man, in instituted as doctrine at the Council of Nicea, in 325 AD, changing the preexisting oneness doctrine that had been put in place by Jesus and practiced by his apostles – those guys who spent 3 1/2 years with him. Isaiah told us that the child to be born would be called “the mighty God” and “Everlasting Father.” To preach a doctrine of trinity is to call Isaiah, the apostles, and yes, Jesus, all liars.

  16. What on earth is a “Oneness Penticostal”?! That heresy does not exist within the bodies of majority denominations. It is sectarian heresy to every denomination I know (personal experience with): Roman Catholic, Syriac, Presbyterian, Southern Baptist, Lutheran and Assemblies of God. Jehovahs Witnesses and Mormons are not counted as Christian churches but heretic cults. I was baptised in the Catholic Church and raised in the the Presbyterian (USA) and adopted the Assemblies of God. I consider myself a Nazarene, convert to the Jewish sect of the Nazarene Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, and a Christian. My Denominational affiliation is merely a crude way to distinguish HOW I worship. Every man who declares the Apostles’ Creed or recognizes it it my Brother in Christ no matter whether he gives confession before a priest or makes supplication in seclusion. Blessed be the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

    • The more familiar term would be to call us “Apostolics”, the first church, followers of Jesus Christ and His teachings by the Apostles. Where is the trinity mentioned “by name” in the Wod of God? It isn’t. Because God is ONE. Debut 6:4. There is no trinity. You are calling on another God when you call on the name of the trinity, because the only God is Jesus. And isn’t it funny that the first pope, the apostle Peter, didn’t baptize anyone in the titles father, son and Holy Ghost? Why not? Because there is no redemption in a title, it’s in the NAME of Jesus. Father is not his name, son is not his name, Holy Ghost is not his name. All power under heaven and earth is given to THAT name, Jesus. If your church teaches otherwise, it is false doctrine and you should get to the nearest Apostolic church immediately!

  17. 1John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven , the father, the word, and the holy ghost: AND THESE THREE ARE ONE. John 1:1 IN the beginning was the WORD, and the word was with God, and the word was God, John 1:14 And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us

    • Hi, Eric. Your Bible needs more verses. If you were sold one with just one verse I’d take it back for a refund. If yours has more you might want to study them. They don’t support your interpretation. See my other comments here for more details.

  18. if Jesus is God himself and the advocate that he asked God to send for us is the holy spirit. then, the three are one. Father son and holy spirit. people should do simple reasoning and stop asking questions.

  19. To my own little understanding the Trinity is one God who made manifest to His people in three different natures. One God with 3significant functions. In the old testament, the father was prominent, he created all things and saw that it was good . Man disappointed God through sin, because He loves man so dearly, He took a human nature and came down to earth to dwell with man and redeem him. After redeeming man by dying on the cross, on the day He ascended into heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit who will teach man what He wasn’t able to teach him. The Holy Spirit now came on the day of Pentecost to sanctify man and to teach man the truth. The Holy Spirit is still with man till today.
God is love And He has always been with us all through the ages. God created, redeemed and sanctified us. Triune God, three persons in one God. Thank you

  20. So I see how this works – you filter and don’t allow posts that use scripture that you can’t explain away. Got it.

  21. You are talking about trinity like it is minsioned in the Bible or Jesus talked about it but Jesus never talked about trinity and in the Bible never talked about it
You are saying that Jesus is a god but he never said I am a god and worship me
You are saying you love Jesus but you are a lier because he told you don’t drink alcohol don’t eat ham and a lot of Christian eat ham and drink alcohol

  22. ”What the Bible Says:
    What history tells us:
Britannica Encyclopedia, 11th Edition, Volume 3, page 365 – Baptism was changed from the name of Jesus to words Father, Son & Holy Ghost in 2nd Century.
Canney Encyclopedia of Religion, page 53 – The early church baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus until the second century.
Hastings Encyclopedia of Religion, Volume 2 – Christian baptism was administered using the words, “in the name of Jesus.” page 377. Baptism was always in the name of Jesus until time of Justin Martyr, page 389.
Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume 2, page 263 – Here the authors acknowledged that the baptismal formula was changed by their church.
Schaff – Herzog Religious Encyclopedia, Volume 1, page 435 – The New Testament knows only the baptism in the name of Jesus.
Hastings Dictionary of Bible, page 88 – It must be acknowledged that the three fold name of Matthew 28:19 does not appear to have been used by the primitive church, but rather in the name of Jesus, Jesus Christ or Lord Jesus.

  23. I grew up oneness UPC and left, not because of the oneness doctrine, but more to do with putting mans standards of holiness above Gods..however that is not the point, I hear both sides of trinity doctrine and oneness and I honestly have felt the holy spirit in both churches..have heard from God in both..instead of arguing about who God is..and in scripture it says that great is the mystery of the godhead bodily if you think you have God figured out..I’m pretty sure you haven’t even come close, but what we all agree with is the most important of anything..if you believe in Jesus, that he died and was raised will be saved and I see that both churches believe this..Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by Him..Jesus prayed that we would all be One (meaning believers) as He is one with the Father..if you think Jesus is the father or if he’s part with the father..doesn’t long as you know you need Jesus..we are human and make mistakes and honestly we don’t know everything..only God does!!..we need to all stand together as One, like Jesus prayed, and pray for those who don’t believe in Him..
