How can Mary be God's Mother, but not the Mother of the Trinity?

Full Question

Saying that Mary is the Mother of God sounds like saying she is the source of Jesus’ divinity and the Mother of the Trinity. How should I understand this?

Understood correctly, the title Mother of God (Greek: Theotokos, “God-bearer”) does not mean that Mary is the source of Christ’s divine nature, nor does it mean Mary is the Mother of the Father or the Holy Spirit. It means Mary is Mother of the person of Jesus, who is God:

The One whom [Mary] conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Father’s eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly "Mother of God." (CCC 495)

  • Alexis Klatt says:

The Trinity is a Pagan Doctrine & made part of the Roman Catholic Church in 325AD (after the death of Christ). Google it. Niacean Creed
The Jews knew God as one God & never as a triune god as the pagans believed in round about them in neighbouring nations. Since God never changes, it was the Roman Catholic Church under the pagan Roman Emperor Constantine, who voted with the bishops to change God from one God into 3 in 1.

    • No thats false we have early christians who say that jesus is god consstantine did nothing

    • shining says:

Holy Trinity means, the God Almighty Father, the Son [Jesus] and the Holy Spirit. If you are looking the word trinity in the bible, I would like to tell you it is nowhere to be found.

      • Enedelia Obregon says:

Not everything Christians believe is in the Bible because there was no Christian Bible when Jesus was alive. Only the Old Testament existed – the Jewish Torah – which is what Jesus read at synagogue. The first book written was the Gospel of Mark, written from 40-70 years after Jesus died. If you read the Acts of the Apostles, you will see how the earliest Christians celebrated. They took care of one another and they met in homes to break and share bread with other believers. That is why Catholics today still celebrate the Eucharist, which we believe IS the Body and Blood of Christ – not just symbols – as he commanded us in Luke 22:19-20.

      • Ray morel says:

The name for God Elohim in Genesis implies Plural indicating the presence of the Trinity. Let us make man in our image (Plural) indicating the presence of the Trinity in creation. Truly a mystery but evident through out the scriptures and a fundamental teaching of Christianity. I believe in one God existing in three persons, Father Son and Holy Spirit. No conflict or compromise.

    • Rana says:

That makes sense. God is the creator and he is one and cannot be the creation and 3.

  • Nakawungu Susan says:

    I love the Catholic Church

  • arshiya says:

But how come is it possible that God gave birth to God but had no grandson as another God? The series shud have continued? And y in Gospel , it’s written that when a person came to Jesus for asking sm help, he told him that only that 1 God can help him? Y not in any verse of Bible did Jesus say that HE HIMSELF is also a God. Y God’s son was like a human & not like any other creature though God made all the creatures & loves them equally?

    • Mariasixtus says:

Good day my dear. Peace be with you, if you recall St. Paul in his letter to the phillipians said that Christ did not claim His equality with God trying to portray Christs humility. Inreference to “Christ being God” in the book of hebrews 1:1-10 its clearly written where God the Fr. Honored Christ as God……… also in the book of Isaiah 9:6 Christ was called Mighty God….. really hope these answered your question. May Gods grace be with you.

  • Eva Lancaster says:

For Mary is the mother or God because she gave birth and brought forth life.

  • If you are male, think of it this way. When you took biology in high school, you learned that the father alone determines the sex of the boy child because it is only the male who carries the Y chromosome. Parthenogensis always results in females being born. So is your mother not the mother of your manhood, but is the mother only of your personhood? Can you separate what you are as a person from what you are as a man or are the two so conjoined that separation is impossible? Your mother is mother to your whole person without division. Mary is Mother to the whole Christ, both God and man, not as the origin of God, but as origin of the Word made flesh.

    • stanley ARINZE says:

Mary is the mother of God because she gave birth to the mortar body of our lord Jesus christ

    • Bill Erndt says:

Nothing in the bible states whether Mary was a surrogate with a divinely implanted embryo of Jesus or was she divinely inseminated from her ovum. So is Jesus’ DNA 100% God’s or just 50%?

  • Carlos Ricoy says:

This explanation appears to be glorifying Mary, which is not appropriate and probably misleads many who haven’t heard the explanation.
More importantly, it ignores the fact that Jesus Christ had two natures, wholly human and wholly divine. It is evident that Mary was the the
mother of Jesus, the man, but certainly not God the Son. Read Luke 1 and see what she says about herself.

  • Subhi Saloom says:

In the name of the Father and of the Son And of the Holy Spirit one God amen..

  • cecille says:

I am a true Roman Catholic &I am proud to be.no need to argue.i have a strng faith &belief,i too believe that mary is the mothervof jesus christ thats all & no more arguments.

  • In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Amen!!!!!!!!!! Mary is the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ, Christ is God, Mary is the Mother of God.

  • Frank says:

    John 1:1

  • Arc Ordanza says:

If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though you will not believe me, believe the works: that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in the Father. (John 10:37-38) “I and the Father are one: (John 10:30) That is, one divine nature, but two distinct persons.

  • Lasi Valery says:

I am Catholic and will always remain a catholic. I love Catholic church.

  • Evangelina P. dela Cruz says:

Mary is the mother of God because she give her human nature to God, her human flesh and blood.

  • Gallibus says:

It would perhaps be more accurate to state that Mary is the giver of Jesus’ human nature since Jesus is one Person but He has two natures – human and divine. Just as an earthly mother prepares and delivers the body of her child, she does not prepare or give the soul – God does that. Similarly, Mary did not give Jesus His divine nature because that was pre-existing and was not in her power to give . Nevertheless, since Jesus is one divine Person, Mary can still be called the God-bearer but with the proper understanding of this.
A earthly mother prepares and delivers the body of her child, she does not prepare or give the soul – God does that – that is why parents are sometimes called co-creators with God of their child. That is also why abortion is so offensive to God since He gives the soul at the same moment that the body begins forming, viz. at conception. Since the soul is immortal, the soul of the aborted child cannot be destroyed, but the child is robbed of its opportunity to fulfill its earthly mission, viz. to learn to love and serve God..

  • PING says:

    Galatians 1:3-7 KJV
[3]Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, [4] Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: [5] To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. [6] I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: [7] Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
    John 14:6-7 KJV
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. [7] If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
    Mark 7:7-8 KJV
Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. [8] For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
    John 4:24 KJV
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
    Hebrews 11:6 KJV
But without faith it is impossible to please him : for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
    Hebrews 11:1 KJV
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
    James 2:17 KJV
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
    2 Timothy 3:14-17 KJV
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them ; [15] And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. [16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
    1 Corinthians 12:1-14 KJV
Now concerning spiritual gifts , brethren, I would not have you ignorant. [2] Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. [3] Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. [4] Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. [5] And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. [6] And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. [7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. [8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; [9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; [10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: [11] But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. [12] For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. [13] For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. [14] For the body is not one member, but many.
We have now the finished work of LORD JESUS who shed His blood and gave His life at the cross last two thousand years ago, to free us from bondage of sin and from the bondage of religion that we might worship in Spirit and in Truth to our invisible GOD.
In this generation even satan shall decieved many into a form of religion and other beliefs. The true message of GOD from the Bible the King James Version are all true for those who are seeking the truth and there are some bibles are being translated and with a corrupt translations by some group of translators for their own interest and protecting their positions, gods and religions just to please people and not pleasing the invisible GOD .

  • Robin says:

There are 3 personages. God the Father, Jesus Christ his son (also the son of Mary) & the Holy Ghost who testifys of the Father. They are as one, saying they think as one & believe as one. Most husband & wife think as one but they are separate beings. A congregation thinks as one, in the fact that, they believe in the same thing. There are many examples. Think of this, who was Jesus Christ talking to when he was on the cross? Certainly not himself. Jesus Christ is our mediator between us & our Heavenly Father. On the cross he was talking to His Father saying “Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing”. The Gospel is not confusing but man makes it confusing by putting in their ideas & thoughts. Remember we are here to learn to follow Christ & to become more like Him.

  • remi says:

Mary was a blessed lady used by God the father to bring to pass Gods purpose! She is mother of Jesus as a man. She cannot give birth to God because she was created by God!!!

  • UrumPen says:

Dear Friends, I have gone through some of the comments for and against. The fact is we are taught a doctrine that is based on precedents not on Bible.Am not saying that the church failed on teachings. But the church failed on understanding the Bible in a broader spectrum. The Bible is one of the most eloquent scripture ever written. But somehow the evil had crept into the scripture and blurred our vision for two millenniums. And if I say 90% percent of the Bible all over world is distorted you may not believe it. I am fortunate to have gone through a study of the Bible and astonished to note the truths are being vandalised. Please go through the website piercedsouls.com and have a review. I promise I shall surprise the world with truth. Especially about the mother Of Jesus. Thank you

  • Genci Cesula says:

The term Mother of God is not a biblical term and even a biblical truth taught in the Bible. Mary was only the carrier of the human body of Christ. Jesus is God in human flesh (John 1:1; 1:14). Jesus is God dwelling in a human flesh. Therefore Mary it is not the mother of God. She is only a servant of God. That is how she describes herself and that is how the Bible describes her.

  • Margarett RBC Zavodny says:

The Canon of the Sacred Books of the Bible was agreed upon long before there was anything but the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Protestants developed the idea of Sola Scriptura and removed books from the Sacred Scripture without any authority but their own, because they did not agree with doctrines that were supported by those books.

    • Genci Cesula says:

That is joke. Protestants have not removed any book from the Bible. It is only in your mind. Catholic church became Catholic that is today much latter, when the Books of the Bible had been long time been accepted universally. One of the principles of Canon is that books are accepted universally by the Church. Catholic Church has added some books from the Old Testament were not part of the Scriptures in the Time of Jesus and that are not in the Holy Scriptures preserved by the Jewish People. History proves that Catholic Church under popes did add those books. Also the Orthodox Church of the East does not accept those books. They split in 1007. So your statement it not based on facts. Check history and see how wrong you are.
