Q&A

How to Thank a Priest for a House Blessing

Full Question

Our priest is scheduled to bless our house. Should I get a gift or invite him to dinner?

Answer

Thanking a priest with an offer of dinner and/or a gift is certainly thoughtful and recommended. Having dinner is a suitable way to honor a priest and for you and your family to get to know Father better, and he you and your family.
I’d simply ask Father in advance if he’d like to stay for dinner when he comes to bless your house, letting him know that you can accommodate his schedule with simpler fare if his time is limited. Ask what he likes and doesn’t like, as he may have dietary restrictions. In addition, ask the parish office manager what Father might like or need as a gift.
May God bless you for your consideration and may he bless you and your family in your home.
