During Sunday Mass our priest invited the congregation to join him in praying aloud the Eucharistic Prayer. Is this permitted?

Praying the Eucharistic Prayer out loud in unison with the priest is not permitted. “It is the ordained priest who, acting in the person of Christ, brings about the eucharistic sacrifice and offers it to God in the name of all the people. For this reason, the Roman Missal prescribes that only the priest should recite the Eucharistic Prayer, while the people participate in faith and in silence” (Ecclesia de Eucharistia28).

Let’s use our common sense. The Eucharstic Prayer is a PRESIDENTIAL PRAYER. There is only one presider in any eucharistic celebration.

  • Linda says:

I always silently pray the Eucharistic prayer because it is so familiar. I don’t for an instant think my prayer is converting the host and wine into the body and blood of our Lord and Savior. It is a beautiful prayer, and I love saying it, but I say it in my head…I’ve heard this question so many times, not sure why a Priest would request the congregation say the prayer out-loud…
