Prayer for the Evening (Wednesday, January 5)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is our Shepherd:

come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Sweet Savior, bless us ere we go;

Thy Word into our minds instill,

And make our lukewarm hearts to glow

With lowly love and fervent will.

R/ Through life’s long day and death’s dark night,

O gentle Jesus, be our Light.

Labor is sweet, for thou hast toiled,

And care is light, for thou hast cared;

Let not our works with self be soiled,

Nor in unsimple ways ensnared. R/

For all we love, the poor, the sad,

The sinful, unto thee we call;

O let thy mercy make us glad:

Thou art our Jesus, and our all. R/

Canticle of Isaiah 40:10a, 11, 13-14, 31

I will appoint over you shepherds after my own heart,/ who will shepherd you wisely and prudently. (Jer 3:15)

In the name of Christ, Saint John Neumann spent himself for the well-being of the Church, God’s beloved flock and vine, in his adopted country, serving in all humility those to whom he had been sent.

Here comes with power

the Lord God.

Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;

in his arms he gathers the lambs,

carrying them in his bosom,

and leading the ewes with care.

Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,

or has instructed him as his counselor?

Whom did he consult to gain knowledge?

Who taught him the path of judgment,

or showed him the way of understanding?

They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength,

[they] will soar as with eagles’ wings;

They will run and not grow weary,

walk and not grow faint.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Acts 20:28, 32

Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the church of God that he acquired with his own blood. And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated.

The Lord is our shepherd;/ nothing shall we want.

(cf. Ps 23:1)

Canticle of Mary

I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble; and none shall be missing, says the Lord. (Jer 23:4)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

[he] has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep. Through the intercession of Saint John Neumann, we pray:

R/Loving Shepherd, hear us.

You have led us through wise, prudent, and firm pastors:
– strengthen our pope and bishops in holiness, discernment, and singleness of heart. R/

You have cared for the poor through the generosity of concerned pastors:
– inspire all pastoral leaders and caregivers with a love for those in need. R/

You have brought life to those who live under sentence of death:
– grant to all pastors the gift of compassionate ministry towards the dying and the bereaved. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

May God carry out in us what is pleasing to him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever. Amen. (cf. Heb 13:21)

Marian Antiphon

Antiphon for the Saturday Office

of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Blessed Mother of God, Mary, perpetual Virgin,

temple of the Lord, shrine of the Holy Spirit,

you alone without compare were pleasing

to the Lord Jesus Christ;

pray for the people, intervene for the clergy;

intercede for devout women.

Alma Redemptoris Mater

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Salve Regina

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
