Prayer for the Morning. November 6

Our Lord watches over those who trust in him.
Let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

This hymn can be sung to the tune used for
Faith of Our Fathers

O Jesus, to your servants give
The consolation they require;
And when the cloud of trouble falls,
With heavenly hope their souls inspire.
Be ever near us, Christ, to bless
And help us in your faithfulness.

As you were with your saints of old,
Be with us, ever present, Lord;
Unite us to yourself, we pray,
As you have promised by your word:
Then we shall glorify and laud
The Holy Spirit sent from God.

Psalm 46:4b-12

Fear not, Jerusalem!/ He who gave you your name is your encouragement. (Bar 4:30)

It is easy to fall into discouragement and to see our situation as hopeless. But discouragement is a tool of the enemy of mankind, the devil. Let us counter him by being agents of encouragement in our world. In doing so, we become a powerful force for good and for the Kingdom of God.

The Lord of hosts is with us:
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

The waters of a river give joy to God’s city,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within, it cannot be shaken;
God will help it at the dawning of the day.
Nations are in tumult, kingdoms are shaken:
he lifts his voice, the earth shrinks away.

The Lord of hosts is with us:
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Come, consider the works of the Lord,
the redoubtable deeds he has done on the earth.
He puts an end to wars over all the earth;
the bow he breaks, the spear he snaps.
He burns the shields with fire.
“Be still and know that I am God,
supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth!”

The Lord of hosts is with us:
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all encouragement, who encourages us in our every affliction, so that we may be able to encourage those who are in any affliction with the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged by God. For as Christ’s sufferings overflow to us, so through Christ does our encouragement also overflow. If we are afflicted, it is for your encouragement and salvation; if we are encouraged, it is for your encouragement, which enables you to endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is firm, for we know that as you share in the sufferings, you also share in the encouragement.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.
(2 Thes 2:16-17)

Canticle of Zechariah

Lay aside your sadness and be of good cheer. (cf. Jb 9:27)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet
of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

We strive to live the Gospel and so we say:

R/Let us be people of encouragement.

For the downcast and the disillusioned,
– may we buoy them up with joy. R/

For those who are wavering in their faith,
– may we guide them gently in the way of truth. R/

For the lukewarm,
– may we inspire them by our fervor. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

God our Father, you encourage the downtrodden and hopeless. Make us people of encouragement, that we may give hope to those in need. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
