Prayer for the Evening
Mighty is the Lord to save: come, let us adore!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
HYMN
Good Jesus, for the love of souls,
Decreed a time of penitence
And placed within the yearly round
The fast of Lenten abstinence,
That those who fell from virtue’s peak
Through wiles of worldly appetite
May by stern discipline and fast
Be brought again to heaven’s height.
Be mindful now of Holy Church,
And of her penitents sincere
Who beg with humble abstinence
Their sinful souls be scoured clear.
Forgive the sins that have been done,
Offenses of the past repair,
And in the future, Lord, we pray,
Sustain us with your steadfast care,
That when our fasting time is done
And Lenten abstinence complete,
We may approach the Easter feast
With guiltless joy and gladness sweet.
PSALM 45:4-10
The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. (Mt 22:2)
The Lenten fast or other penance purifies our hearts of sin so that we will be prepared to celebrate with joy the Easter feast, when “heaven is wedded to earth,” as Christ, the anointed king and bridegroom, rises in triumph.
O mighty one, gird your sword upon your thigh;
in splendor and state, ride on in triumph
for the cause of truth and goodness and right.
Take aim with your bow in your dread right hand.
Your arrows are sharp: peoples fall beneath you.
The foes of the king fall down and lose heart.
Your throne, O God, shall endure for ever.
A scepter of justice is the scepter of your kingdom.
Your love is for justice; your hatred for evil.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you
with the oil of gladness above other kings:
your robes are fragrant with aloes and myrrh.
From the ivory palace you are greeted with music.

There shall yet be heard the cry of joy, the cry of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, the voice of the bride, the sound of those who bring thank offerings to the house of the Lord, singing, “Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good; his mercy endures forever.” For I will restore this country as of old, says the Lord.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

– prepare us through this season of Lent to live the life of Easter to the full. R/

Today the Blessed Virgin Mary
presented the Child Jesus in the Temple;
and Simeon, filled with the Holy Spirit,
took him into his arms,
and blessed God forever.
