Prayer for the Evening

Let us pray to our Father in heaven:

he will hear his children.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Lord, teach us how to pray aright

With reverence and fear;

Though dust and ashes in your sight,

We may, we must draw near.

We perish if we cease from prayer,

O grant us power to pray;

And when to meet you we prepare,

Lord, meet us in the way.

Psalm 34:12-23

So now, O children, listen to me,/ go not astray from the words of my mouth. (Prv 5:7)

Let us listen to the Lord as he teaches us to pray to our Father, who in turn listens to us.

Come, children, and hear me

that I may teach you the fear of the Lord.

Who is he who longs for life

and many days, to enjoy his prosperity?

Then keep your tongue from evil

and your lips from speaking deceit.

Turn aside from evil and do good;

seek and strive after peace.

The Lord turns his face against the wicked

to destroy their remembrance from the earth.

The Lord turns his eyes to the just

and his ears to their appeal.

They call and the Lord hears

and rescues them in all their distress.

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted;

those whose spirit is crushed he will save.

Many are the trials of the just man

but from them all the Lord will rescue him.

He will keep guard over all his bones;

not one of his bones shall be broken.

Evil brings death to the wicked;

those who hate the good are doomed.

The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants.

Those who hide in him shall not be condemned.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 John 5:14-15)

We have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours.

Look down, then, from heaven, your holy abode,
and bless your people. (Dt 26:15)

Canticle of Mary

The hungry he has filled with good things. (Lk 1:53)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Grant us, Father, these our petitions:

R/Hear our prayer.

That we may honor your name. R/

That we may live in anticipation of your Kingdom. R/

That we may seek to know and do your will. R/

That we may trust in you for our daily bread. R/

That we may forgive others as you have forgiven us. R/

Our Father….

May the blessing of almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, descend upon us and remain with us forever. Amen.

Marian Antiphon

Antiphon for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, February 2

Today the Blessed Virgin Mary

presented the Child Jesus in the Temple;

and Simeon, filled with the Holy Spirit,

took him into his arms,

and blessed God forever.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Ave, Regina caelorum,

Ave, Domina angelorum,

Salve, radix, salve, porta,

Ex qua mundo lux est orta.

Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,

Super omnes speciosa;

Vale, O valde decora,

Et pro nobis Christum exora.

Hail, O Queen of heaven enthroned.

Hail, by angels mistress owned.

Root of Jesse, Gate of morn

Whence the world’s true light was born:

Glorious Virgin, joy to thee,

Loveliest whom in heaven they see;

Fairest thou, where all are fair,

Plead with Christ our souls to spare.
