Prayer for the Evening

O praise the Lord, Jerusalem!

Zion, praise your God!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Thou art the Way: to thee alone

From sin and death we flee;

And he who would the Father seek

Must seek him, Lord, by thee.

Thou art the Truth: thy word alone

True wisdom can impart;

Thou only can inform the mind,

And purify the heart.

Thou art the Life: the rending tomb

Proclaims thy conquering arm,

And those who put their trust in thee

Nor death nor hell shall harm.

Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life;

Grant us that Way to know,

That Truth to keep, that Life to win,

Whose joys eternal flow.

Psalm 147:12-20

What great nation has statutes and decrees that are as just as this whole law? (Dt 4:8)

God’s law is enshrined in the dynamic medium of the word. God’s word is no mere breath on the air; it is an act of power, bringing into being what God sends it to achieve. In Jesus Christ, the person of the eternal Word of God is made flesh for our salvation. In him, God’s law is made visible in human form.

O praise the Lord, Jerusalem!

Zion, praise your God!

He has strengthened the bars of your gates,

he has blessed the children within you.

He established peace on your borders,

he feeds you with finest wheat.

He sends out his word to the earth

and swiftly runs his command.

He showers down snow white as wool,

he scatters hoar-frost like ashes.

He hurls down hailstones like crumbs.

The waters are frozen at his touch;

he sends forth his word and it melts them:

at the breath of his mouth the waters flow.

He makes his word known to Jacob,

to Israel his laws and decrees.

He has not dealt thus with other nations;

he has not taught them his decrees.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Deuteronomy 4:11-13)

You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, which blazed to the very sky with fire and was enveloped in a dense black cloud. Then the Lord spoke to you from the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. He proclaimed to you his covenant, which he commanded you to keep: the ten commandments, which he wrote on two tablets of stone.

Holy, holy, holy!

Canticle of Mary

Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. (Jn 14:21)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Let us pray for a share in the obedience of Jesus Christ, in whom God’s law comes to fulfillment:

R/Keep your people in your constancy, O Lord.

For all those charged with preaching and teaching your law,

– make them living examples of all they hand on: R/

For all those charged with interpreting your law,

– make them wise, prudent, and loving: R/

For all those charged with keeping your law,

– make us all obedient witnesses in love: R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Annunciation of the Lord,

March 25

How shall this happen, O angel of God,

since I do not know man?

Hear, O Virgin Mary:

the Holy Spirit shall come upon you,

and the power of the Most High

shall overshadow you.
