Prayer for the Morning
God will guard us from all harm:
let us give thanks and praise.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
God is my strong salvation,
What foe have I to fear?
In darkness and temptation
My light, my help is near:
Though hosts encamp around me,
Firm to the fight I stand;
What terror can confound me,
With God at my right hand?
Place on the Lord reliance,
My soul with courage wait;
His truth be thine affiance,
When faint and desolate.
His might thy heart shall strengthen,
His love thy joy increase;
Mercy thy days shall lengthen,
The Lord will give thee peace.
Psalm 17:1-4a, 6-14a
You, O God, have tested us;/ you have tried us as silver is tried. (Ps 66:10)
As the young men were thrown into the furnace, so also is Jesus thrown into the pit of death by powerful enemies. Just as they were preserved by God, who is more powerful than any king, so also is Jesus delivered from death by God, who is more powerful even than that most terrifying of enemies, death, which prowls the world seeking to devour all the living. Life, not death, has the last word.
Lord, hear a cause that is just,
pay heed to my cry.
Turn your ear to my prayer:
no deceit is on my lips.
From you may my judgment come forth.
Your eyes discern the truth.
You search my heart, you visit me by night.
You test me and you find in me no wrong.
My words are not sinful as are men’s words.
I am here and I call, you will hear me, O God.
Turn your ear to me; hear my words.
Display your great love, you whose right hand saves
your friends from those who rebel against them.
Guard me as the apple of your eye.
Hide me in the shadow of your wings
from the violent attack of the wicked.
My foes encircle me with deadly intent.
Their hearts tight shut, their mouths speak proudly.
They advance against me, and now they surround me.
Their eyes are watching to strike me to the ground
as though they were lions ready to claw
or like some young lion crouched in hiding.
Lord, arise, confront them, strike them down!
Let your sword rescue my soul from the wicked;
let your hand, O Lord, rescue me from men,
from men whose reward is in this present life.
Glory to the Father….
Word of God (Wisdom 3:6-9)
As gold in the furnace, he proved them,/ and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself./ In the time of their visitation they shall shine,/ and shall dart about as sparks through stubble;/ They shall judge nations and rule over peoples,/ and the Lord shall be their King forever./ Those who trust in him shall understand truth,/ and the faithful shall abide with him in love:/ Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,/ and his care is with his elect.
The genuineness of your faith, more precious than
gold that is perishable even though tested by fire,
may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor
at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Pt 1:7)
Canticle of Zechariah
I will refine them as silver is refined,/ and I will test them as gold is tested. (Zec 13:9)
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet
of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father…
You came forth from God, Lord Jesus Christ, and you are with us still. In mercy, hear us as we pray:
R/Turn your ear to us; hear our words!
For those who are tried by painful circumstances:
– from their suffering, forge spirits strong in faith and love. R/
For those who endure hatred and scorn for their beliefs:
– from their trials, create in them perseverance. R/
For those who undergo persecution of every kind:
– from their pain, mold true charity. R/
O God our strength, our fortress, and our deliverer, you sent your Son into the pit of suffering and death for our redemption. Free us from all that would harm us, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
