Masturbation a sin: How to Stop the Masturbation Addiction

Masturbation happens in every culture, across every period of history, and it’s the way most adolescents discover what they enjoy before embarking on adult sexual relationships. However, if it’s becoming an obsession that inhibits other aspects of your life, or you belong to a religion or philosophy that forbids masturbation, then it’s possible to curb the impulse, gather your self-discipline, and take control of your urges.

Part 1 of 2: Staying Busy and Focused

  1. Find another outlet for your time and energy. Fill your life with engaging activities. The excitement of doing something different can help replace the urge to masturbate, and you’ll have a go-to distraction next time you’re tempted. Try some of these options:

      • Be Creative. The process of turning sexual urges into creative output (called sublimation) is something on which monks and sages have relied upon for centuries. Start writing, learn to play a musical instrument, paint, draw, or do whatever else makes you feel like you’re doing something productive.
      • Play Sports. It takes discipline and persistence to excel at a sport. Develop an interest like running or swimming, or a group sport like soccer, football, basketball, or tennis. Also, any form of exercise will help you relieve tension, feel happier, and to make you focus on your physicality in a positive way. Yoga is another form of exercise that can help you feel more relaxed and less likely to feel the sudden urge to masturbate.

    • Eat a Healthy Diet. Fruits and vegetables have healthy effects on the body and provide nutrients necessary to increase your energy to make you more active throughout the day.
    • Find a new hobby, or cultivate a skill. Learning something that takes a while to master can refocus your brain on the delayed gratification of achieving goals instead of the instant gratification of masturbation. Try skills like cooking, woodshop, archery, baking, public speaking, or gardening.
    • Volunteer your time. Devote your energy to helping teens who’ve been less fortunate than you, such as working at a shelter, tutoring low-income students, cleaning up blighted areas, or raising money for a good cause. You’ll get an altruistic feeling from helping others, and you’ll have less time to stray from your goals.
  2. Make a plan for avoiding masturbation during your “go to” times of day. If you have problems before going to bed or in the shower, refrain from any temptation to masturbate. For instance, if it’s a problem late at night, drop to the floor and do push-ups until you’re too exhausted to do anything but fall asleep. If you find shower time too tempting, start using ice cold water only — you won’t want to be in there for long.

    • If you always masturbate when you get home from school, make sure to have a solid plan to stave off any boredom you may feel. If you have so little to do that your mind frequently wanders to sexual thoughts, occupy your schedule. You’ll find it gets easier to avoid masturbation if you’re too busy or tired to spare any energy for distractions.
    • If you’re tempted to masturbate in the morning, try to sleep with more than just one layer of clothing so touching yourself is more of an effort.
  3. Limit your solitude. If you masturbate frequently because you feel lonely, find ways to be as socially engaged as possible. This means that you should join as many clubs or activities as you can, accept and give more invitations to people, and go out of your way to make more friends. If you want to date someone, consider asking a friend to set you up or join an online dating site.

    • Another thing you can do is to limit the times when you are likely to be home alone. If you tend to masturbate in the hour or two before your parents get home from work, go for a walk during that time, or do your homework in a coffee shop.
    • Even if all of your friends are busy, you can still limit your impulse to masturbate by going out in public. For instance, instead of watching the game at home by yourself, watch it at a sports bar. Even if you’re not hanging out with friends, you will not be alone, ultimately having no time for masturbation.
  4. Stop watching porn on your computer. One of the reasons you may be masturbating so much is that you know that you can access porn within seconds if you want to. However, if you don’t have the willpower to stop looking at the porn on your own, then you may have to take other measures to get the job done:

    • Consider installing porn-blocking software on your computer. Of course you will know the password to bypass the blocking function, but just having it pop up will remind you of your priorities. You can also type a random password in a text file, copy and paste it when you enter your password and verify it, then delete the text file. Then, you will not be able to know the password of your own porn-blocker. This is the best way to keep you strong and spare you the struggle.
    • If you have the tendency to masturbate looking at porn on the computer, try moving your computer into a room where others can see you.
    • If you have a physical collection of porn, dispose of it ASAP.
    • Get Help. Porn addiction apps such as Brainbuddy are designed to rewire your brain so you crave real connection instead of porn.

  5. Be persistent and patient. Stopping a masturbation addiction won’t hit you like a lightning bolt. It’s a process that requires commitment, and you might make mistakes or relapse on occasions. The real struggle is persevering, so commit now that you won’t let little mistakes stand in your way.

    • Set up a reward system. Bribe yourself to stay on-track with rewards for good behavior. For instance, if you can go two whole weeks without masturbating once, treat yourself to a small indulgence like a new game or an ice cream cone.
    • Reward systems are great; just make sure not to reward yourself with the very thing you’re trying to conquer, which, in this case, is masturbating. If you say that you’ll reward yourself with masturbation after a week of not doing it, then you’ll only be turning masturbation into something that you really, really want even more.

Part 2 of 2: Getting in the Right Mindset

  1. Stop punishing yourself. Consider it this way: if you’re constantly dwelling on the disapproval that some may feel about masturbating, then you’re still thinking about masturbation all the time. Don’t just trade in your masturbation addiction for another one — they’re so closely related that you won’t resolve anything. Instead, acknowledge that this has been a problem for you, but you will persevere to stop the impulse.

    • Remember, you’re human, and humans masturbate. Some studies show that up to 95% of males and 89% of females admit that they have masturbated.[1] You’ll feel less shame once you realize you are not alone.
    • Resist the urge of sinking into despair by remembering the times spent feeling sorry for yourself when it could have been spent relinquishing your addiction.
  2. Don’t believe the myths about the harms of masturbation. If you want to stop your masturbation addiction, then you should do it for reasons that are personal, moral and Godly, not for reasons that are health-related. The only real health problem that can be caused is pain and rawness from chronic masturbation, but that can go away if you stop touching yourself so frequently.
  3. Know that it will get better. If you have the faith that you can really find a way to stop your masturbation addiction, then you’ll be able to do it. Maybe your goal isn’t to stop masturbating completely, but just to limit your masturbation to a healthy amount, such as once or twice a day. That’s perfectly fine, too. If you have the belief that you really can win this battle, you’ll be much more likely to succeed than if you’re constantly second-guessing yourself.

    • That being said, there may be days when you have relapses. If you find yourself masturbating one day when you planned not to, don’t think, “Oh, well, I’ve ruined this day anyway,” and then continue compulsively masturbating for the rest of the day and then starting fresh the next. This is about as logical as thinking that you should eat an entire pie because you’ve had one cookie and have ruined your diet for the day anyway.
  4. Know when to seek help. If you’ve tried everything and just can’t seem to get your addiction under control, it might be time to tell someone else about your problem and ask for assistance. Don’t feel ashamed, and remember that many people have similar problems like an addiction. Seeking help is a brave action, and most people you ask will see it as such.

    • Ask your religious leader for guidance. If you belong to a church, consider asking your local clergy for help. Keep three things in mind: First, these people become part of the clergy because they’re dedicated to helping their congregations. Second, they’ve probably already assisted someone with a masturbation addiction before. Lastly, they’re bound by strict confidentiality. Request a private appointment with your pastor, bishop, imam, rabbi, or other religious leader, and see if his or her advice can help you.
    • Make an appointment with a medical professional. Counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists are all trained to help people with varying levels of addiction. Start by seeing a therapist in your area, who can assess your addiction and refer you to more specialized help if necessary. Several treatment options are available, from cognitive-behavior therapy to medication.

    Two words: Holy Spirit.

    I agree with the things I noticed written here. But it’s only the tip of the iceberg. I’ve experienced it all – I tried it all, every method. Nearly 10 years I suffered internally, a relentless addiction. And at the end of the day, after many ups and downs, many highs and lows, many successes and failures, I have NOT gotten to where I am today – free to live my life chastely – rather, I have been graced and carried by the Father, through Christ, in the Holy Spirit. He’s the Healer. He is the Way. Seek none other. Abandon yourself and your struggle to Him, and He will set you free, in time. God’s time is not our time. St. Paul had a “thorn in his side” to keep him humble (2 Cor 12). Pray and beg Him to make you holy. To make you into whom He’s calling you to be. If you are Catholic: get. to. confession. Never get tired or overly embarrassed. Get over yourself, be truly sorry for your sins, and He WILL heal you. He is faithful. He healed me, and He still is each day. God bless you and I am praying for His work in your life.

    Making masturbation a “sin” (whatever that means), was an act of sheer brilliance on the part of the RCC. Here’s a normal, healthy, animal and human activity, that almost every male at least, engages in. There are ultrasounds showing that even the unborn engage in masturbation. Perhaps that is why a fetus or premature infant that dies before being baptized has only a “hope” of salvation, which I guess is better than an eternity in “Limbo,” a man-made, imaginary place the RCC is shying away from after breaking the hearts of countless women who were told they would never see their unborn babies in heaven. Just think about how cruel that was… and still is.

    Look at the brilliance – you call this natural, healthy activity a sin – in fact a mortal sin because a) it’s (supposedly) wrong, b) you know it’s wrong, because the RCC has insisted that this is the case, and c) you do it anyway because you’re a normal, healthy human being.

    Now you have to go to Confession, or else face an eternity of torment because you engaged in this healthy, normal activity. Having done so, it’s only a matter of time, when you’re going to do it again – otherwise you aren’t a normal person. Then, of course, you have to go to Confession again, hopefully lighting a couple candles and dropping some money in the box. What a fantastic way to keep people coming back to church for never-ending indoctrination.. They tell you something normal and healthy is wrong, then forgive you for doing it, knowing you will come back again and again seeking forgiveness for a natural act, because they have made you terrified of going to this imaginary place called Hell.

    The RCC makes individuals feel shame and guilt about their bodies, starting this outrageous indoctrination at an early age before the child knows he or she is being manipulated. It’s quite a brilliant setup when you think about it. Vicious and cruel, to be sure, but absolutely brilliant. Here’s this all powerful being that has a highly abnormal, prurient interest in what one particular primate in an obscure corner of the universe does when it takes its clothes off. Can you not see how utterly creepy that is?

    The worst part is the “Hell” part, because it’s just as manufactured and constructed by the RCC as is the “sin” of masturbation. The word “Hell” was used to translate four words in the bible.

    (1) Sheol is a resting place in the OT. When you died before Jesus, you were essentially dead. No punishment. If God wanted to punish you, He did it during your life, or He punished your offspring “to the third and fourth generation.” Nice guy – very just and fair (sarcasm). It’s only after the “good news” of Jesus, that we get eternal torment. Most Christians don’t realize that there was no eternal punishment before Jesus came; you were just dead; permanently unconscious in Sheol. Around the time of Jesus, the Jews were debating whether all these souls in Sheol would be awakened for a final judgment, but even if so – they would have been judged for what they did, rather than for what they believed, and instead of eternal punishment, the bad ones would be entirely eliminated. It took the “good news” of Jesus to introduce the concept of eternal torment in hellfire.

    Jesus spoke of (2) Gehenna, also translated as Hell. This was the Jerusalem town dump. It’s gone and Jesus was quite clearly speaking allegorically. Jesus, as a Jew, believed in Sheol. In those days, the worst thing that could happen to a Jew was to be thrown in the dump, rather than afforded a decent burial. The Jews of that time knew Jesus was speaking allegorically.

    (3) Hades, is the pagan Hell, given that Hades is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. Imagine, paganism, right there in the NT! At that time, those in the ‘west’ who knew of the pagan Hades, also understood this to be an allegorical concept. (4) Tartarus was the bottom layer of Hades, where Satan and his demons will go when Jesus musters up the strength to send them there, though I’m still unsure of why Satan is such a bad guy. The best I can tell from my reading of the bible, Satan killed at most 8 people – Job’s family – and did so with Bible God’s permission (or God killed them, the text is unclear); and this cruelty was the result of a bet with a being who supposedly already knew the outcome. Bible God however kills millions in the bible; and almost all of them are innocent, starting with the mythical flood. The word “Hell” itself refers to the pagan Norse underworld. It’s a totally pagan concept, but one that has served the RCC well in its quest to control the sheeple with fear.

    The “Hell” of Dante’s Inferno that the RCC has used to terrify children for centuries is a fraud; though I sometimes wish it was real, because, although nobody deserves eternal torment, there are certainly many in the RCC who could stand to be singed with a blowtorch as a reminder of all the torment they created right here. It’s not easy to throw off the shame, guilt and overriding fear that the RCC indoctrinates children with – but it’s worth it. Life can take on joy once you rid yourself of these horrible lies.

    I am Christian and I don’t want know one to sin, yet I understand that God give us grace because of what Jesus did on the Cross which he paid for my sin, I would tell not to go and sin. Yet if can’t stop having lust issues then bible say need fine a wife, in the mean time I think Jesus would tell cut hand. Yet body will remind you that you need find a wife again the next day or probably some time with in the next week. if take care of self in early morning then be able live your a day with out lust. If you had wife that be her job to take care of your needs. I hope you find a good wife that is willing to do that. Thankful for grace and the good news of Jesus Christ

    1. RMP Reply

      And a husband’s job is to lay down his life for his wife’s needs (as Christ did for the Church, as St Paul said) to the point of denying himself his own life. What are a wife’s needs? To be loved. To be sacrificed for. What you described is not love. It’s the attitude of a man toward a prostitute. And this is the perfect way to end up with a bitter and miserable wife who feels used instead of loved and will eventually not want sexual relations with her husband ever. This is treating a wife like a prostitute. A wife is not an outlet for your lust. That’s objectifying and using a person as a thing, much like using a toilet when you need to poop. A wife is a PERSON to be loved and cherished, cooperated with, respected. Sex is not always love and viewing her in the way you describe here
      is definitely not love.

Amen!” It seems to work wonders for me.

    1. Patrick Gannon Reply

      Or you could just be a normal, healthy person and get yourself off. Masturbation is not abnormal. A bunch of grown men dressed in robes and living in celibacy is what is not normal for humans. Evolution has developed the human species to have a strong lust for sex. Given that for most of our history, our population growth was essentially flat, this was necessary for the continuation of the species. Most babies died young for tens of thousands of years. Only in the last century, with the advent of science, better health and sanitation, better food and housing, vaccines and medicines, population growth went off the charts and now threatens our very survival. That strong sexual urge that is built into us, is no longer necessary for ensuring the continuation of the species, yet it is an urge that provides us with many benefits in our personal relationships and personal health, and there is nothing whatsoever that is sinful about it. The sin is in the attempt to make people feel ashamed and guilty about performing perfectly normal and healthy bodily functions.

      1. peter1589 Reply

        Population growth went off the charts? Are you serious? How about the stark flaming FACT that European “families” (whatever those are) are down to 1.3 kids per family, and the Islamic hordes invading with impunity are at 8.4 kids per family? Have you even bothered to look at the hyper-abundant youtube videos of the chaos being visited upon Europe these days by those military aged males who are raping, beating and setting up no-go zones all over Europe, intimidating the vastly outnumbered police and opposing the emaciated armies of Europe because Europe lacks the armed forces to resist? And why? Because abortion and birth control has debilitated the population and perverted the demographics into a continent inhabited by men and women too old to have kids and are now the butt of the aggressive assaults of the Muslims!

        Read Isaiah 10 and you’ll have the answer. Merely substitute the words “unjust laws” with “Roe v. Wade” and you’ll see why all this is happening.

        The Blessed Mother came to Fatima in 1917 and said that WWI was going to end shortly, but unless mankind bettered himself, there would be a worse war in the pontificate of Pius XI. Men did not and WWII did, exactly when She said it would.

        Now She has come to a multitude of people in these last days, most notably in Akita Japan to a Sr. Agnes Sasagawa, and told her the following:

        “My dear daughter, listen well to what I have to say to you. You will inform your superior.”

        After a short silence:

        “As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son. Each day recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and priests.”

        “The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres…churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

        “The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will be no longer pardon for them”

        Do you see why so many fall into Hell? Can the slightest resistance against masturbation be set up in your mind, or is the assault of the evil one so pronounced that all you can do is concede your soul to his manipulation?

  22. peter1589 Reply

    I have had a life long problem with this sin, starting, I believe, either from when I went skinning dipping in Long Island sound as a 2 year old with a girl down the street (as my mother informed me) or when my sister, 5 years older, invited me to explore her body when I was 8 or so.

    The devil is a real entity, and these two events were the primary temptations presented to me, as my family is PROTESTant, and had no idea of satan’s pervasive workings, which are nonstop as he and his minions never sleep.

    I became Catholic late in life, and while praying the Rosary as a new devotion, God separated the veil of the natural world and the supernatural world and permitted me to hear the voice of the demon who had been plaguing me all my life, a reptilian, furiously murderous, simultaneously thermonuclear hot and liquid nitrogen cold, hissing voice which stated, “I WILL KILL YOU ALL!!”

    This event caused me to arch my back in terror (I was praying in bed while lying down) and thrown myself of the bed in a ballistic arch, landing on my knees at the end of the bed, shaking like a leaf in a hurricane and sweating like a soaked sponge, asking God to never let me hear that voice again.

    Since the Rosary is a prayer which bestows “signal graces” to the disciple who practices it, it was no surprise that the devil DESPISES this discipline.

    So, as an initial factor of advice to those who suffer from this malady, PRAY THE ROSARY.

    Also, I was working at a law firm late one night when this nefarious impulse overcame me, and I went to a dark floor, into an office at the top of this towering office building, overlooking the entire city, to commit my crime and add to Christ’s wounds, but was suddenly inspired by my Guardian Angel to simply ask Jesus to take away the sin. This I did. The erection disappeared INSTANTLY.

    Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and it shall be opened to you. This last is why satan has taken God’s Word to pervert it, and calls getting a woman pregnant, “knocking her up.”

    As all curses have their roots in the perversion of Catholic dogma, i.e.:

    1. Bullsh*t = an insult against Papal bulls which define dogma, despised by PROTESTants, like my own family;
    2. Mother F***er = an insult against the perpetual virginity of Mary;
    3. The 69 sexual position = an insult against the 6th and 9th commandments of the Catholic Bibles, but not in that same order in any of the PROTESTant Bibles;
    4. “Bread” as uttered from the black ghetto minds as money, = an insult against the Eucharist, the Source and Summit of Catholic Life, but mere filthy lucre in the minds of ghetto denizens;
    5. “Soul Food” as cuisine in the minds of ghetto blacks = an insult against the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, without which there is no life in us, according to Christ Himself;
    6. “Hollywood” as the great purveyor of sex and violence in the cinema = an insult against the Holy Wood of the Christ upon which Christ hung in the most ignominious death in human history in order to save some, but not all.
    7. “G** da*n” as an expression of outrage = an insult and sin by taking the Holy Name of God in vain.
    8. “Son of a bi**h” as an insult against the victim as a son of a female DOG, which is G*D backward, and the reason Son of Sam (Mass backwards) heard his vocation from a dog in a yard he passed by.

    There are innumerable other examples, but you can now easily figure them out for yourselves every time you use them.

    Meanwhile, pray the Rosary all day long, invoke the assistance of St. Michael by praying the Chaplet of St. Michael daily, invoke the defense of your Holy Guardian Angel by praying the Litany of the Guardian Angel daily, do to Mass daily (give us this day our DAILY bread, recall?), and you will have the efforts of the Host of Heaven to keep you from sin. BUT YOU MUST ASK, as my Angel guided me to do when tempted. God bless you!
