Where in the Bible does it say that Mary was assumed into heaven?

Where in the Bible does it say that Mary was assumed into heaven?

Full Question

Where does it say that Mary was assumed into heaven?

If you mean where it is explicitly written in the Bible, there is none. But there are several scriptural passages in the Bible, the meditation on which illustrates the Assumption doctrine.

Pope Pius XII formally defined the dogma in his apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus on November 1, 1950:

“The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.”

He pointed to the passages as follows:

  • Arise, O Lord, into thy resting place: thou and the ark, which thou hast sanctified. (Psalm 131:8)
  • [The Spouse of Canticles] that goeth up by the desert, as a pillar of smoke of aromatical spices, of myrrh and frankincense (Canticles 3:6)
  • The Woman clothed with the Sun (Revelation 12)
  • I will glorify the place of my feet. (Isaiah 61:13)
  • Who is this that cometh up from the desert, flowing with delights, leaning upon her beloved? (Canticles 8:5)

When you meditate on these passages in light of the Assumption, the dogma becomes clearer.

Also, the dogma is stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

“Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.’ The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians: ‘In giving birth you kept your virginity; in your Dormition you did not leave the world, O Mother of God, but were joined to the source of Life. You conceived the living God and, by your prayers, will deliver our souls from death.’”

  • 4 years ago, I had a dream with the Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ in one dream. This is what happened in the dream. I was walking towards the veranda of our old house, one of my cousins was looking up in the sky. It was night time when I had a short glimpse of the sky. She was really happy and her face was beaming of joy. I asked, what are you seeing? And, she replied: Look at the sky! My attention turned away from my cousin and looked into the sky. At first, I saw multitude of stars glowing in different colors. Momentarily, a door or window in Heaven opened up like it was a big screen in front of me. Then, I saw a lot of people gathered, dressed in white, some of them holding leaves, singing, praising the Lord in Heaven. I moved my eyes from left to right, then a hand holding the "crown" in front of the crowd appeared. When, the crown was placed on the head, there was huge praising, singing in Heaven. I could not describe the joy in my heart. It felt like, I was there during the celebration. I remained my glance on the person being crowned and to my surprised it was the Blessed Mother. She was dressed in white and she wore a blue veil on her head. And, she was seated on elevated chair and everyone could see her. There was two persons at her back which I didn't see their faces, the one that holds the crown and another person (I believe it was Jesus and God the Father).

I moved my eyes on another window in the sky which is next to each other. I realized I was seeing things like my cousin.
I told my cousin, now the Blessed Mother is also appearing to you in the vision and she said yes! At that moment, I could still hear the happiness from heaven. It seems there was no barrier that blocked the scenes.

In another window in Heaven, I saw Jesus Christ in the river being baptized by another man. He was young and it seems like his skin is pale white and fresh. It's not an ordinary skin. It's hard to describe cause i didn't see that skin in my whole life. After baptism, there was a sudden roar in Heaven and then, celebration again. It was a short scene.

Now, every time there was a dialog or discussion about the Blessed Mother. My dream was a proof that the Blessed Mother is in Heaven and she gained the crown of Heaven and Earth.

Note: The Blessed Mother appeared in my dream more than 5 times in the course of 4 years. Jesus Christ appeared on my dream more than 30 times from 2012-2016. I have many dream stories which is sealed in my memory. Thank you!

  • yes, CAtholic Church was brought from Heaven by the LORD himself, so who are we to question and denying that!! He brought his church to build on this earth by himself, who else but the Lord himself... unlike the other churches built by men.... that is why the confusion among these people who denying the very core of the catholic faith.. the universal church

  • The Assumption of Mary is tied to the Dormition story of the Blessed Virgin, an apocryphal book which tells of the passing of Mary in the presence of 11 of the apostles (Thomas was not present). When Thomas arrived, he was upset that he had not been given the opportunity to say goodbye, so the coffin was opened, and all that was present was clothing. Remember the Church had a lot of books they did not include in the New Testament for various reasons. Some are pious stories and others sacred myth - but remember that all myths are rooted in some truth no matter how exaggerated. We get the names of Mary's parents from one of those books.
The dogma of the Assumption is basically a belief that the Blessed Virgin Mary, although she was a human in all ways and not divine, experienced early resurrection through the love of her Son Jesus. This is not hard to believe, and to those who say it's not in scripture so we should not believe, remember the words to St Thomas - "Blessed are they who have not seen but have believed." Why should we not believe that our Lord Jesus loved his mother with such intensity as to bring her home as she was obedient to God from the beginning with her fiat, reversing the the damage done by Eve. Pope Pius XII simply solidified the truths of Mary's passing away and transference to heaven by God as a dogma of belief. The Church has that authority given them by Christ himself. If anything is wrong, Christ will fix it.
If you want to read the Dormition Story in three different translations, go to the New Advent Site:
There are some other well written explanations by Catholic - and oh yeah - Orthodox apologists as well. While Orthodoxy disagrees with Pope Pius XII's decision to declare the Assumption as a dogma outside of an ecumenical council, they still believe firmly in the passing away of Mary and the transference of her earthly body to heaven, which Catholics call The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
For those who don't believe because it's not contained in the 26 books of the New Testament, thanks for personally putting God in a box and deciding what miracles he can perform. Don't worry about these people - their minds are trained to be skeptical and not believe in anything not contained in the bible, which is too bad since God performs miracles in our lives, great and small every day. Remember the final words in the Gospel of John 21: 24-25
"It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written."

  • Jeremy, Mary cannot be the same with those people you mentioned - Peter, Moses, Abraham, etc because Jesus flesh and blood were not taken from them but from Mary. That is the reason why, Mary was sinless because her son, Jesus cannot offer a sacrificial blood for your salvation that is stained with sin! Otherwise what a waste of time for the Father to do all this when after all the sacrificial lamb, who is Jesus is stained with sin? Read the verse below that tells what happen if one is not under the law but under GRACE...
Romans 6:14 says, for sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under the law but under grace. Meaning to say, that if a person is under GRACE, sin cannot function/operate in that person. So if this is the case – THAT SIN WILL HAVE NO DOMINION OVER A PERSON WHO IS UNDER GRACE - how much more with Mary who was told by the archangel Gabriel not only under GRACE but FULL OF GRACE?
Another thing: Job 14:4 also says “No one can bring what is pure from the impure” So if Mary was impure then Jesus who was pure should not have been brought to Mary.

  • Mary had other children? So she neglected all her "other" children n kept following Jesus? When he was dying on the cross, where we're his siblings that he had to hand his mother to John? I believe she was/is "ever virgin" May the Lord open our hearts, mind and understanding. Amen

  • 1) Catholics do not worship the Pope. Only Pastors indoctrinate this deceit to their flock.
    2) We seek Mary to intercede in our prayers and lead us to Jesus.
    3) Imagine you and your mum visiting a friend and he invites you in but tells you to leave your mum outside. Will you go into his house and leave her outside?

  • Is the pope God? He is just a human sinner like you and me. How can he be worshiped?
The most of the catholic doctrine is just man-made and senseless. So many rituals just made out of nothing, no backup of scriptures.
Just read the Bible yourselves and you will find so many contradictions with the catholic teachings and God's word. You don't have to be a prophet to understand his word. As long as you can read you will understand clearly, even unbelievers do. Don't just believe what your leaders say. Everything you hear, you test it with God's word and with your spirit to confirm the truthfulness of those teachings. Don't be religious but have a real relationship with God who is the most loving, gracious and merciful and you will surely know the truth. I just want to encourage to find out the truth for yourselves because I care and love you with God's love.
Do you really not understand what is so clearly written in the Bible? Ex.:
    The first and second commandment:
    Exodus 20: 3-6
3 “You shall have no other gods before me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Why do you have so many man-made gods made of wood and stone? You even worship mere humans as holy saints who are also just sinners like you and me.
    Matthew 22: 37-38
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
These are just a few of thousands of contradictions. These are not even topics for debate. They are clearly understandable for everybody.
I pray that the Lord our God may open your hearts to the truth and despise all the lies. May God bless you abundantly!

    • Pope is not God.
      Catholic don't worship Pope.
      Catholic don't worship Saints.
      Your acusations are false.
      I am Catholic.
The bible said that Jesus built His Church and gave Peter order to take care of His flocks. And continuing the order, the Church has list unbroken chains of successor of Peter, which is the papacy.
I don't worship Pope or Papacy. I just acknowledge and honor what Jesus has started in the beginning, and that some people carry out and continue the order to take care of His flock.
And I can not acknowledge your understanding of your bible.
And as for saints, James 5:16-18 (NET) So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great effectiveness.
Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and there was no rain on the land for three years and six months!
Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land sprouted with a harvest.
Saints are righteous people. And we asked them to pray for us.
If you argue that we should ask God directly, well, you apparently don't read these verses:
1 Kings 17:17-24 (WEB) After these things, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.
She said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, you man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!”
He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the room where he stayed, and laid him on his own bed.
He cried to Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh my God, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?”
He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh my God, please let this child’s soul come into him again.”
Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the room into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Elijah said, “Behold, your son lives.”
The woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that Yahweh’s word in your mouth is truth.”
God hear the righteous person's prayer.
May be you will argue that Elijah was still alive at the time. And bible never suggest we pray to dead saints.
Well, you right, but still God gave grace through them. Wanna proof?
2 Kings 13:21 (WEB) As they were burying a man, behold, they saw a band of raiders; and they threw the man into Elisha’s tomb. As soon as the man touched Elisha’s bones, he revived, and stood up on his feet.
I learned Catholic teaching, not from gossips nor acusations.
Coincidentally, Jesus also accused as blasphemy to God, didn't He?
So, I took your accusations towards the Church as fullfilment of Jesus words:
John 15:20 (NET) Remember what I told you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my word, they will obey yours too.

  • Luke 11-27 and 28 shows that Mary is no more blessed than any of us believers, Jesus said it, and I believe that he well and truly outranks men in dresses 1900 years later!

  • as sin entered in through the first man adam.the virgin mary was not tanted sort of speek by man,for the seed is of the man/god created everything bearing seed of its own kind, now jesus being the seed of the holy spirit remained without sin.though mary was born of sinfull flesh and still in need of a savoir.hope that helps a bit though theres much more depth to it. GOD bless and stay in his word
