PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, JULY 3)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord is our praise in the great assembly!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

To you who did with love untold

Your doubting servant chide,

Bidding the eye of sense behold

Your wounded hands and side:

Grant us, like him, with heartfelt awe

To own you God and Lord,

And from his hour of darkness draw

Faith in thโ€™Incarnate Word.

And while that wondrous record now

Of unbelief we hear,

O let us only lowlier bow

In self-distrusting fear;

And grant that we may never dare

Your loving heart to grieve,

But at the last their blessing share

Who see not, yet believe.

PSALM 22:23-32

O you of little faith, why did you doubt? (Mt 14:31)

Thomas sought the Lord honestly, even in his doubt. In return, the Lord had mercy on Thomasโ€™ poverty of faith. His disbelief purified by what he saw and heard, he devoted his life to the task of telling of the Lord to โ€œgenerationsโ€ far away from his native Palestine.

I will tell of your name to my brethren

and praise you where they are assembled.

โ€œYou who fear the Lord give him praise;

all sons of Jacob, give him glory.

Revere him, Israelโ€™s sons.

For he has never despised

nor scorned the poverty of the poor.

From him he has not hidden his face,

but he heard the poor man when he cried.โ€

You are my praise in the great assembly.

My vows I will pay before those who fear him.

The poor shall eat and shall have their fill.

They shall praise the Lord, those who seek him.

May their hearts live for ever and ever!

All the earth shall remember and return to the Lord,

all families of the nations worship before him

for the kingdom is the Lordโ€™s; he is ruler of the nations.

They shall worship him, all the mighty of the earth;

before him shall bow all who go down to the dust.

And my soul shall live for him, my children serve him.

They shall tell of the Lord to generations yet to come,

declare his faithfulness to peoples yet unborn:

โ€œThese things the Lord has done.โ€

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ.

Word of God (Matthew 13:16-17)

Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

Thomas answered and said to him,

โ€œMy Lord and my God!โ€ (Jn 20:28)

CANTICLE OF MARYย

Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, โ€œMove from here to there,โ€ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. (Mt 17:20)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ

INTERCESSIONS

Through the intercession of Saint Thomas, we pray:

R/Strengthen us in faith, O Lord!

Amid doubt, darkness, and despair: R/

Amid indifference, hostility, and arrogance: R/

Amid questions and fears: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Fatherโ€ฆ.

May God keep us firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. (cf. 1 Cor 1:8)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Memorial of

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16,

from the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite

Your head is like Carmel,

and the hairs of your head,

bound in tresses,

even as royal purple, alleluia.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
