PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SATURDAY, JULY 4)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Lord brings us peace.

Let us give him thanks and praise!

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ. Alleluia!

HYMN

All you who seek for sure relief

In trouble and distress,

Whatever sorrow vex the mind,

Or guilt the soul oppress.

Jesus, who gave himself for you

Upon the Cross to die,

Opens to you his Sacred Heart;

O to that heart draw nigh.

You hear how kindly he invites;

You hear his words so blessed;

โ€œAll you that labor come to me,

And I will give you rest.โ€

PSALM 16:7-11

Down I went to the roots of the mountains;/ the bars of the netherworld/ were closing behind me forever,/ But you brought up my life from the pit,/ O Lord, my God. (Jon 2:7)

In difficult times Jesus is always with us. We may not feel his presence, and this can be a great trial. But he is there nonetheless. If we try to grow in faith when things are going well and dispose ourselves to receive this gift, our faith can help us to rest in him when he seems far away.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,

who even at night directs my heart.

I keep the Lord ever in my sight:

since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;

even my body shall rest in safety.

For you will not leave my soul among the dead,

nor let your beloved know decay.

You will show me the path of life,

the fullness of joy in your presence,

at your right hand happiness for ever.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ.

Word of God (Sirach 51:25-30)

I open my mouth and speak of her [wisdom]:/ gain, at no cost, wisdom for yourselves./ Submit your neck to her yoke,/ that your mind may accept her teaching./ For she is close to those who seek her,/ and the one who is in earnest finds her./ See for yourselves! I have labored only a little,/ but have found much./ Acquire but a little instruction;/ you will win silver and gold through her./ Let your spirits rejoice in the mercy of God,/ and be not ashamed to give him praise./ Work at your tasks in due season,/ and in his own time God will give you your reward.

I myself will go along, to give you rest.
(cf. Ex 33:14)

CANTICLE OF MARY

In God alone be at rest, my soul. (Ps 62:6)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ

Intercessions

Our souls seek repose in the Lord. So we pray:

R/Let us rest in you.

When our hearts are full of conflict and confusion: R/

When we are feeling stressed and tired: R/

When circumstances seem to conspire against us: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Fatherโ€ฆ.

May Christ dwell in our hearts through faith, and may charity be the root and foundation of our life. Amen. (cf. Eph 3:17)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Memorial of

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16,

from the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite

Your head is like Carmel,

and the hairs of your head,

bound in tresses,

even as royal purple, alleluia.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
