PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SATURDAY, AUGUST 29)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Christ suffered for us:

let us give him thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

My God, I love you; not because

I hope for heavโ€™n thereby,

Nor yet because who love you not

May eternally die.

You, O my Jesus, you did me

Upon the cross embrace;

For me you bore the nails and spear,

And manifold disgrace.

And griefs and torments numberless,

And sweat of agony;

Eโ€™en death itself; and all for man

Who was your enemy.

Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ

Should I not love you well?

Not for the hope of winning heaven,

Nor of escaping hell.

Not with the hope of gaining aught,

Nor seeking a reward,

But as yourself have lovรจd me,

O everlasting Lord!

Eโ€™en so I love you, and will love,

And in your praise will sing,

Solely because you are my God,

And my eternal King.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 52:13-15; 53:2b-3a, 5

Then he said to all, โ€œIf anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.โ€ (Lk 9:23)

We make the sign of the cross daily because we live the sign of the cross daily. Jesusโ€™ death on the cross was the summary of a daily life lived by the great demands of obedient love met through all the small acts of choosing other over self that prepare for that ultimate sacrifice.

See, my servant shall prosper,

he shall be raised high and greatly exalted.

Even as many were amazed at himโ€”

so marred was his look beyond that of man,

and his appearance beyond that of mortalsโ€”

So shall he startle many nations,

because of him kings shall stand speechless;

For those who have not been told shall see,

those who have not heard shall ponder it.

There was in him no stately bearing to make us look

at him,

nor appearance that would attract us to him.

He was spurned and avoided by men,

a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity,

But he was pierced for our offenses,

crushed for our sins,

Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole,

by his stripes we were healed.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ.

Word of God (Matthew 5:38-42)

You have heard that it was said, โ€œAn eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.โ€ But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on [your] right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.

Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.

(Mt 7:12)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Encourage yourselves daily while it is still โ€œtoday,โ€ so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin. (Heb 3:13)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ

INTERCESSIONS

Let us ask our heavenly Father for the gift of daily growth in likeness to Christ, our crucified Savior:

R/Give us this day our daily bread.

Strengthen us in our love for Christ,

โ€“ that we may follow him with eager fidelity: R/

Enliven our commitment to live according to the Gospel,

โ€“ that we may examine our lives daily and seek new ways to grow: R/

Mark our everyday lives with the sign of the cross,

โ€“ that we may become truly holy through love in ordinary activities: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Fatherโ€ฆ.

May the Lord, our God, bless us in all that we undertake. Amen. (cf. Dt 14:29)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
