PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us lift up our hearts to the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Saint Andrew, who once cast your nets

Upon the lake of Galilee,

Show now your skill in catching souls,

And save us from the worldโ€™s wide sea.

Saint Peterโ€™s brother during life,

Not even death your souls could part,

Since both endured the bitter cross

With patient and courageous heart.

True brothers in your work on earth,

Your crown of glory is the same,

Both fathers of the infant Church,

Both crucified for Jesusโ€™ Name.

You were the first to find Our Lord,

And led your brother to his feet,

So help us on lifeโ€™s weary way,

Befriend us in its dust and heat.

Companion of your brotherโ€™s toil,

Preserve the Church in charity,

That with Saint Peter, shepherd true,

We may serve God in unity.

Belovรจd Saint, so dear to Christ,

Help us to run the path of love,

That we may all Godโ€™s praises sing,

United in full joy above.

PSALM 25:1-6, 8-10

Then they left their nets and followed him. (Mk 1:18)

This psalm captures the picture of true hope painted by Saint Andrewโ€™s willingness to put his entire life and his death in the Lordโ€™s hands. He dared to leave all familiar securities and to entrust his future to Christโ€™s promise because he trusted the faithful love Christ had always shown him in the past.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I trust you, let me not be disappointed;

do not let my enemies triumph.

Those who hope in you shall not be disappointed,

but only those who wantonly break faith.

Lord, make me know your ways.

Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my savior.

In you I hope all day long

because of your goodness, O Lord.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

The Lord is good and upright.

He shows the path to those who stray,

he guides the humble in the right path;

he teaches his way to the poor.

His ways are faithfulness and love

for those who keep his covenant and law.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ.

Word of God (Matthew 19:29)

Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.

I am the way

and the truth and the life. (Jn 14:6)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. (Lk 14:27)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ

INTERCESSIONS

Lord, you demanded everything of your disciplesโ€”and gave them everything and more, even to life eternal. Through the intercession of Saint Andrew, we pray:

R/To you, O Lord, we lift up our souls!

You called the disciples to leave home, family, and all they had:

โ€“ inspire many men and women in our day to leave all things to follow you in lives of dedication to your service. R/

You called the disciples to abandon plans and projects:

โ€“ teach us to seek your will rather than our own. R/

You rewarded your disciples with everlasting life:

โ€“ bring into the joy of your presence all of our beloved dead. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Fatherโ€ฆ.

May the Lord guard our going and coming/ both now and for ever. Amen. (cf. Ps 121:8)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon of the Divine Office

My soul magnifies the Lord,

for God has regarded my humility.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabrielโ€™s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
