Evening Prayer for 22nd June, 2021

Prayer for theย Evening

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ. Alleluia!

Hymn

The youth who wealth and courts despised,

His spotless mind above to raise;

Who every rising thought chastisedโ€”

โ€™Tis Aloysius claims our lays.

The tenor of his life so bright,So full of angel purity,

A seraph from the realms of light

Dwelling on earth he seemed to be.

No titles win nor honors move,

No worldly charms his mind allure:

The ties of blood but serve to prove,

His soul on every side secure.

Enamored of celestial joys,

โ€œLet pride and wealth my choice withstand,

I scorn their gifts; they are but toys,โ€

He said, and joined Loyolaโ€™s band.

Psalm 15

May innocence and uprightness protect me:/ย for my hope is in you, Oย Lord. (Ps 25:21)

Saint John Cassian defined โ€œpurity of heartโ€ as perfect love. Vaticanย IIโ€™s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church,ย Lumen gentium,ย defined the holiness to which all Christians are called in the same words. The Psalmist portrays in concrete, no-nonsense terms this kind of holiness, the kind for which Saint Aloysius lived and died.

Lord, who shall be admitted to your tent

and dwell on your holy mountain?

He who walks without fault;

he who acts with justice

and speaks the truth from his heart;

he who does not slander with his tongue;

he who does no wrong to his brother,

who casts no slur on his neighbor,

who holds the godless in disdain,

but honors those who fear the Lord;

he who keeps his pledge, come what may;

who takes no interest on a loan

and accepts no bribes against the innocent.

Such a man will stand firm for ever.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ.

Word of God. 1 Timothy 4:12, 15

Let no oneย have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Be diligent in these matters, be ยญabsorbed in them, so that your progress may be evident to everyone.

From your youth embrace discipline.ย (Sir 6:18)

Canticle of Mary

Think of the Lord in goodness,/ย and seek him in integrity of heart. (Wis 1:1)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Fatherโ€ฆ

Intercessions

Let us pray to the God of all holiness:

R/Sanctify your people, Lord.

For all those who feel unable to attain holiness,

โ€“ that they may find encouragement in your word.ย R/

For all parents,

โ€“ that they may be examples and teachers of holiness to their children.ย R/

For all those in programs of formation for priesthood or religious life,

โ€“ that they may find inspiration and encouragement in the lives of young saints.ย R/

For vocations to marriage, priesthood, diaconate, and religious life,

โ€“ that we may be blessed by their constant search for holiness.ย R/

Personal intentions

Our Fatherโ€ฆ.

To all the beloved of God, called to be holy: grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.ย (cf. Romย 1:7)

Marian Antiphon

You have been made beautiful and sweet

in your delights, O holy Mother of God.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ย Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ย That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
