Prayer for the Morning

From Zion has gone forth instruction,

the word of the Lord from Jerusalem:

come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Whom in ancient prophecy

God revealed to Saint Elijah

The title “Our Lady of Mount Carmel,” named for the lovely place where the Prophet Elijah dwelt in service to the word of God, expresses a sense of the beauty, silence, and prayer that characterize Mary, the Mother of our Redeemer.

In days to come,

the mountain of the Lord’s house

shall be established as the highest mountain

and raised above the hills.

All nations shall stream toward it;

many peoples shall come and say:

“Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain,

to the house of the God of Jacob,

that he may instruct us in his ways,

and we may walk in his paths.”

For from Zion shall go forth instruction,

and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

He shall judge between the nations,

and impose terms on many peoples.

They shall beat their swords into plowshares

and their spears into pruning hooks;

one nation shall not raise the sword against another,

nor shall they train for war again.

O house of Jacob, come,

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

and to remember his holy covenant.

Prayer for the Evening

Christ, the seed that fell into the ground and died,

has borne much fruit: let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

Who can tell what wisdom brings,

First of all created things?

Hidden from our earthbound eyes:

Wisdom in his plans he laid,

By study, prayer, and teaching, Saint Bonaventure planted the seed of God’s Word in the hearts of many. Through his writings and his intercession, with God’s blessing, may our earth continue to yield a rich harvest of faith, hope, charity, and zeal for the Gospel.

Word of God (1 Corinthians 1:20-25)

Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith. For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

The desire for Wisdom leads up to a kingdom!

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Bonaventure (WEDNESDAY, JULY 15)

Franciscan Doctor of the Church (1221-1274)

His life

+ Bonaventure was born in Tuscany in 1221. As a boy, he met Saint Francis of Assisi and he was inspired to enter the Franciscan Order in 1243.

+ He was elected Minister General of the Franciscan Order in 1257. This was a time of crisis for the order as various factions began to interpret the teachings of Saint Francis in different ways. Bonaventure stressed the basic Franciscan values, especially poverty.

+ A brilliant thinker and gifted writer, he saw study and learning as being important for the friars’ ministries of preaching and teaching.

+ In 1273, Bonaventure was named cardinal-archbishop of Albano, Italy. He became a key figure in the theological and philosophical disputes of his day.

+ Saint Bonaventure, the “Seraphic Doctor,” died in 1274 while taking part in the Council of Lyons. He was canonized in 1482 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1588.

Prayer for the Morning

Christ is the fount of wisdom: come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

O Fount of truth, O Source of light,

From whom all wisdom flows,

No truth is found apart from thee

In aught man seeks or knows.

To every door of knowledge true

CANTICLE (Wisdom 9:1-6, 9-11)

By wisdom is a house built,/ by understanding is it made firm. (Prv 24:3)

Saint Bonaventure sought wisdom in God’s revelation through prayer and study. He filled the hearts of others with the fruits of his learning through his work of teaching, and in wisdom he built up the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) through his leadership.

God of my fathers, Lord of mercy,

you who have made all things by your word

and in your wisdom have established man

to rule the creatures produced by you,

to govern the world in holiness and justice,

and to render judgment in integrity of heart:

Give me Wisdom, the attendant at your throne,

A POWERFUL NOVENA FOR THE DEFEAT OF SATAN

Prayer to Our Lady, Queen of Angels

August Queen of Heaven,

Sovereign Mistress of the Angels,

Thou Who from the beginning has received from God

the power and mission to crush the head of satan,

we humbly beseech Thee to send Thy Holy Legions that,

under Thy command and by Thy power,

they may pursue the evil spirits,

encounter them on every side,

resist their bold attacks

and drive them hence into the abyss of eternal woe.

Amen.

Prayer to God the Father

O Divine Eternal Father,

in union with your Divine Son and the Holy Spirit,

and through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

I beg You to destroy the Power of your greatest enemy, the evil spirits.

Cast them into the deepest recesses of hell

and chain them there forever!

Take possession of your Kingdom

which You have created and which is rightfully yours.

Heavenly Father, give us the reign

of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Prayer to Saint Michael.

Glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Heavenly Hosts,

who standest always ready to give assistance to the faithful,

who didst fight with the dragon,

the old serpent and didst cast him out of Heaven,

and now valiantly defendest the Church of God

that the gates of hell shall not prevail against her,

I earnestly entreat Thee to assist us also

against the painful and dangerous conflict

which we have to sustain against the same formidable foe.

Be with us, O mighty Prince,

that we may courageously fight

and wholly vanquish that proud spirit

whom Thou hast by the Divine Power

so gloriously overthrown

and whom our powerful King, Jesus Christ,

has, in our nature, so completely overcome;

so that having triumphed over the enemy of our salvation,

we may with Thee and the Holy Angels

praise God Who has granted the possibility of repentance

and forgiveness to fallen man.
