Novena of the Holy Cloak of Joseph

Novena of the Holy Cloak of Joseph

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I give Thee my heart and my soul.

(Recite the Glory Be 3 times to our Heavenly Father in thanksgiving for having exalted St. Joseph to a position of such exceptional dignity.)

O Glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, I humbly prostrate myself before Thee. I beg the Lord Jesus, thine Immaculate Spouse, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and all the Angels and Saints in the Heavenly Court, to join me in this devotion. I offer thee this precious cloak, while pledging my sincerest faith and devotion. I promise to do all in my power to honor thee throughout my lifetime to prove my love for thee.

Help me, St. Joseph. Assist me now and throughout my lifetime, but especially at the moment of my death, as thou wert assisted by Jesus and Mary, that I may join thee one day in Heaven and there honor thee for all eternity. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING with Magnificat TUESDAY, JUNE 9

Prayer for the Evening

You guide us by your counsel and so you lead us

to glory: we praise you, O Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

When the way is hard to find,

Seeking first the Father’s will,

Lord, your promise call to mind,

All your purposes fulfill:

When the way is hard to find

Lead your pilgrim people still.

Faith be strong and doubt depart,

Fear and unbelief be gone;

Peace possess the anxious heart

Where the light of Christ has shone:

Faith be strong and doubt depart,

Lead your pilgrim people on.

Psalm 731-15, 28

Had you walked in the way of God,/ you would have dwelt in enduring peace. (Bar 3:13)

Some among the rich, famous, and powerful seem to be spared all ordinary human ills despite their apparent disregard of God and of human decency. Even their problems seem unreal in the glare of the spotlight and camera flash. The public idolizes and imitates them. Why not? The Psalmist wrestles with a problem as old as ancient Israel and as modern as today’s tabloids.

How good God is to Israel,

to those who are pure of heart.

Yet my feet came close to stumbling,

my steps had almost slipped

for I was filled with envy of the proud

when I saw how the wicked prosper.

For them there are no pains;

their bodies are sound and sleek.

They have no share in men’s sorrows;

they are not stricken like others.

So they wear their pride like a necklace,

they clothe themselves with violence.

Their hearts overflow with malice,

their minds seethe with plots.

They scoff; they speak with malice;

from on high they plan oppression.

They have set their mouths in the heavens

and their tongues dictate to the earth.

So the people turn to follow them

and drink in all their words.

They say: “How can God know?

Does the Most High take any notice?”

Look at them, such are the wicked,

but untroubled, they grow in wealth.

How useless to keep my heart pure

and wash my hands in innocence,

when I was stricken all day long,

suffered punishment day after day.

Then I said: “If I should speak like that,

I should abandon the faith of your people.”

To be near God is my happiness.

I have made the Lord God my refuge.

I will tell of all your works

at the gates of the city of Zion.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 18:6-7)

Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come!

Show us the way to life!

CANTICLE OF MARY

Set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. (1 Tm 4:12)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

The Lord has made us responsible for choosing wisely whose example we will follow and for leading one another in the right way. Let us pray:

R/Lead us in your ways, O Lord.

For those whom fame and fortune have made influential in our culture,

– that they may use their influence for good: R/

For those who follow destructive paths and lead others in their wake,

– that they may turn to the road set out by Christ: R/

For those who are swayed by the example of celebrities,

– that they may choose to imitate the good rather than the heedless: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever! Amen.

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Mary is the immaculate lily,

who brought forth Christ the imperishable rose.

O holy Mother of God,

immaculate sheep,

who gave birth to Christ the Lamb,

the Word incarnate from you;

O most holy Virgin,

who have astonished the hosts of angels;

stupendous is the miracle in heaven:

a woman clothed with the sun

carrying in her arms the Light.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Pope Francis shares 7-word prayer he learned from his grandmother

Pope suggests three tools especially for month of June, to experience God’s mercy, forgiveness, tenderness.

Pope Francis is encouraging us to make our hearts like the Sacred Heart, especially through the graces of Eucharistic adoration in this month of June.He also advises a simple prayer he learned from his grandmother.

Often translated in English with the more archaic, “Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine,” the Holy Father led those in St. Peter’s Square in praying it after the midday Angelus on Sunday. “Jesus, make my heart more like yours.”

June is the month traditionally focused on devotion to the Sacred Heart, which the pope said is a “devotion that unites the great spiritual teachers and the simple among the people of God.”

“Indeed, the human and divine Heart of Jesus is the wellspring where we can always draw upon God’s mercy, forgiveness, and tenderness,” he said.

3 tools

To access this wellspring, the pope said, we can focus on a passage of the Gospel, “feeling that at the center of every gesture, of every word of Jesus, at the center there is love, the love of the Father who sent His Son, the love of the Holy Spirit that is within us.”

“And we can do this by adoring the Eucharist, where this love is present in the Sacrament,” he said. “Then our heart too, little by little, will become more patient, more generous, more merciful, in imitation of the Heart of Jesus.”

There is an ancient prayer – I learned it from my grandmother – which said: ‘Jesus, make my heart more like yours.’ It is a beautiful prayer. ‘Make my heart more like yours.’ A beautiful prayer, short, to pray during this month. Shall we say it together now? ‘Jesus, make my heart more like yours.’ Once more: ‘Jesus, make my heart more like yours.’

Start your day with this morning prayer of hope

This prayer looks forward to the new day, welcoming the light that drives out the darkness.

When we wake up in the morning, we do not always look forward to the new day. Often we will get out of bed and reluctantly start our morning, not excited about our daily activities.Yet, how we start our morning is sets the tone for the rest of the day. If we begin in a sour mood, most likely the rest of the day will be negative.

Here is an excerpt from the “Hymn of Light” composed by St. Ephrem, a holy saint of the 4th century whose hymns have greatly influenced the Church. The following hymn is typically part of the Maronite liturgy and praises God, who drives out the darkness of the world.

The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus our Lord.

Begotten of the Father, He manifested himself to us.

He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of His light.

Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.

From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.

His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.

Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.

Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.

The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.

He brings salvation and grants us life. He ascends to his Father on high.

He will return in glorious splendor and shed His light on those gazing upon Him.

Our King comes in majestic glory.

Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet Him.

Let us find our joy in Him, for He has found joy in us.

He will indeed rejoice us with His marvelous light.

Stand up then and be ready!

Give thanks to our King and Savior,

Who will come in great glory to gladden us

with His marvelous light in His kingdom.

Renounce the devil and his temptations with this night prayer

To move forward in the path of virtue we must first renounce the ways of darkness.

A central part of the Rite of Baptism is called the “Baptismal Promises.” It is where the person to be baptized both renounces their former way of life and formally accepts the Gospel message. While that certainly essential when starting out on the pilgrimage of faith, it shouldn’t end there. We often fall into temptation even after accepting Jesus into our hearts, and need to continually renounce the ways of darkness.

Here is a short prayer from the Golden Manual that is recommended on a daily basis, in particular at the end of the day. It helps us to recognize our faults and renounce them, doing what we can to ensure they don’t take root and grow even bigger.

O my God, I firmly believe that you are here present, and perfectly see me, and that you observe all my actions, all my thoughts, and the most secret motions of my heart. You watch over me with an incomparable love, every moment bestowing favors, and preserving me from evil.

Let me here examine what sins I have committed this day, by thought, word, deed, or omission. [Take a few moments to recall the day]

O my God, I detest these and all other sins which I have committed against your divine Majesty. I am extremely sorry that I have offended you, because you are infinitely good, and sin displeases you. I love you with my whole heart; and firmly purpose, by the help of your grace, never more to offend you.

I renounce the devil, with all his works; the world, with all its pomps; the flesh, with all its temptations.

I desire to be with Christ. Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

May the blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and all the saints, pray for me to our Lord, that I may be preserved this night from sin and all evils. Amen.

Start your day with this beautiful prayer to the Trinity

Praise the Trinity in the first moments of the morning and call down God’s blessings on your loved ones.

The first few moments of the day are always critical and typically set the tone for what will transpire. A long-standing tradition in the Catholic Church is to pray a morning offering, giving to God all the fruits of the day that lie ahead.

Here is an example from the Golden Manual, directed at the Holy Trinity. It not only praises God, but also asks for God’s protection for you and your loved ones throughout the day. If you want to start your day off on the right foot, here is one prayer you can try.

I adore and glorify you, O blessed Trinity, God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I offer myself to your divine Majesty, humbly asking you to take from me, and from all the faithful, whatever displeases you, and to give us that which is grateful in your sight. Grant that we may here do what you command, and hereafter receive what you promise.

To you O Lord, I commend my soul and body [my spouse and children, my father and mother, my brothers and sisters]; all my relations, benefactors, friends, and acquaintances; all who have injured or offended me; and all whom I have in any way scandalized injured, or offended; all who have asked my prayers, or for whom I am accustomed or bound to pray; supply all their necessities, comfort and support them in all their trials and afflictions, deliver them from all temptations, make them in this world truly to know, love, and serve you, and to enjoy you hereafter in heaven.

Lastly, I commend all universally to your divine protection, that you may grant to the living forgiveness of their sins, and to the souls departed, rest and peace. Amen.

John Paul II’s prayer to Mary, Mother of Unity

0

The Polish pontiff asked Mary to teach us how to achieve unity, protecting peace and justice in this world.

In 1979, St. John Paul II visited the shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland and made a solemn act of consecration to the Virgin Mary. It was a tumultuous time in the world, especially in Poland, which was still under communist occupation. There was great tension in the world and St. John Paul II urged peace and justice on all sides, doing what he could to unite the people under the leadership of Jesus Christ.

Near the end of this consecration prayer, the Polish pontiff turned to Mary, Mother of Unity and laid before her all that was on his heart. Here is an except from this prayer that is still fitting today and asks Mary to unite the world in choosing peace instead of war.

Through all the means of knowledge, of mutual respect, of love, of shared collaboration in various fields, may we be able to rediscover gradually the divine plan for the unity into which we should enter and bring everybody in, in order that the one fold of Christ may recognize and live its unity on earth. Mother of unity, teach us constantly the ways that lead to unity.

Mother of Good Counsel, show us always how we are to serve the individual and humanity in every nation, how we are to lead them along the ways of salvation. How we are to protect justice and peace in a world continually threatened on various sides. How greatly I desire on the occasion of our meeting today to entrust to you all the difficult problems of the societies, systems and states—problems that cannot be solved with hatred, war and self-destruction but only by peace, justice and respect for the rights of people and of nations.

Mother of the Church, grant that the Church may enjoy freedom and peace in fulfilling her saving mission and that to this end she may become mature with a new maturity of faith and inner unity. Help us to overcome opposition and difficulties. Help us to rediscover all the simplicity and dignity of the Christian vocation.

How many problems, Mother, should I not present to you by name in this meeting! I entrust them all to you, because you know them best and understand them.

Pray for the healing of racial division with this prayer

0

Ask God to bring his healing touch to racial tensions that continue to engulf our world.

Race should not be an issue that divides us, especially Christians who believe that all are created in the image and likeness of God. Yet, the issue continues to put a wedge between humans, dividing us and inciting our indignation and rage. This is not how it was meant to be, as Jesus desired that all humanity be united under him.

I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us. (John 17:20-21)

Let us never tire in fighting for unity and pray to God that true and lasting healing will occur.

Here is a prayer published by the USCCB that prays to God for healing of all racial divisions and may be an appropriate prayer to pray on a daily basis.

We thank you, O Lord,

For in your loving wisdom

You created one human family

With a diversity

That enriches our communities.

We pray to you, O Lord,

That we always recognize

each member of this human family

As being made in your image and beloved by you,

With worth and dignity.

We pray to you, O Lord,

That we may envision a way forward

To heal the racial divisions

That deny human dignity and

the bonds between all human beings.

We pray to you, O Lord

That we may affirm each person’s dignity

Through fair access for all

To economic opportunity, housing,

Education, and employment.

We pray to you, O Lord,

That we may have eyes to see

What is possible when we reach out

Beyond fear, beyond anger,

To hold the hand of our sisters, our brothers.

We thank you, O Lord,

For your call and challenge to us

That we may reveal your teachings and your love

Through our actions to end racism

And to proclaim that we are all your children,

heirs to your sacred creation.

Amen.

An Advent Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”

Serenity prayer of St. Teresa of Avila

Let nothing disturb you,

Let nothing frighten you,

All things are passing away:

God never changes.

Patience obtains all things

Whoever has God lacks nothing;

God alone suffices. Amen.
