Prayer To Our Lady, Help Of Christians

St. John Bosco had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother, and even had a profound vision of her.

St. John Bosco, a holy Italian priest of the 19th century, had a deep spiritual life especially characterized by his love of the Virgin Mary. He spent great amounts of time in prayer each day and related to others several visions he had.
One of them included the Blessed Mother under the title of “Mary, Help of Christians.”

Try to picture yourselves with me on the seashore, or, better still, on an outlying cliff with no other land in sight … In this midst of this endless sea, two solid columns, a short distance apart, soar high into the sky: one is surmounted by a statue of the Immaculate Virgin at whose feet a large inscription reads: Help of Christians.

One of the lessons of the vision was that we are to tie ourselves closely to the Blessed Mother, as she will be able to help us weather any trial.

Below is a prayer St. John Bosco composed that expresses this spiritual reality, invoking the heavenly aid of our Mother during our time of need.

Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christians,

how sweet it is to come to your feet

imploring your perpetual help.

If earthly mothers cease not to remember their children,

how can you, the most loving of all mothers forget me?

Grant then to me, I implore you,

your perpetual help in all my necessities,

in every sorrow, and especially in all my temptations.

I ask for your unceasing help for all who are now suffering.

Help the weak, cure the sick, convert sinners.

Grant through your intercessions many vocations to the religious life.

Obtain for us, O Mary, Help of Christians,

that having invoked you on earth we may love and eternally thank you in heaven.

Here’s how to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday at home

Here you have the prayers, readings, and everything else you need to celebrate with God’s Word.

In order to worthily sanctify the 2nd Sunday of Easter,

Aleteia proposes this celebration of the Word of God at home.

Instructions:

  • This celebration requires the presence of at least two people.
  • If you’re alone, you can simply read this celebration, united in your heart and spirit with the Church.  You can also watch the Mass on television.
  • Choose the most convenient time, from Saturday evening (the vigil of Sunday) to Sunday evening.
  • This celebration is particularly suitable for use with family. In order to respect quarantine measures, you should refrain from inviting others from outside your household. If anyone in your house is ill, make sure they remain in isolation to ensure that all safety guidelines are strictly followed.
  • Set up the needed number of chairs in front of a prayer corner, respecting an appropriate distance of at least a yard between each.
  • Take the time to renew a little the prayer corner’s decorations: images, candles, real or artificial flowers, drawings by your children, garlands, etc.
  • A simple cross or crucifix must always be visible in the background.
  • Designate a person to lead the prayer.
  • The leader will also direct the preparation of the celebration, during which he or she will mark the length of the periods of silence.
  • Designate readers for the readings.
  • During the preparation of the celebration: you can prepare petitions for the Prayers of the Faithful or Universal Prayer (in case that is not possible, a standard list of petitions is provided here for use during the course of the celebration); you can decide whether or not to use the Easter Sequence; and suitable hymns may be prepared as well.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Celebration of the Word

“His mercy endures forever.”

The leader of the celebration reads:

Brothers and sisters,

Sunday, the first day of the week,

it is for us Christians the day of the Lord,

the day instituted to celebrate his Resurrection.

Thus, in a special way

on this second Sunday of Easter,

how much we wish we could get out of the house

to visit our beloved parish church,

and meet there with an assembly of our brothers and sisters,

an assembly in which

it will be granted to us once more to recognize the Body of Christ

and to nourish ourselves with his real presence.

Indeed, brothers and sisters, how our hearts burn

on this holy Sunday with the desire to attend Sunday Mass,

so that nourished and strengthened,

we can become for others what we have received there:

the Body of Christ, loving His own who are in the world,

and loving them to the end.

Sadly, on this Divine Mercy Sunday,

concern for the present, fear for the future,

compassion, suffering, and for some, death,

are still sharing our lives.

How can it be

that when we have the greatest need

of the graces of Sunday Mass,

our doors are locked, and we are confined!

Brothers and sisters, let us not be sad:

Christ has truly risen!

Are we shut in?

Let it be so:

The resurrected Jesus will be here among us!

And he will indeed say to us:

“My peace, my joy be with you!”

Yes indeed,

since we are gathered to pray in his name,

Christ Jesus is right here among us.

Yes, since we are going to read His Word as members of the Church,

the Word of God himself will be present among us,

and there’s no doubt he will talk to us.

Pause

O Jesus, during this time we are prevented from

perpetuating the offering of your life

by the celebration of the Eucharist:

more than ever, we ask you to make it present

in the way we love each other

as you loved us.

After three minutes of silence, all rise and make the Sign of the Cross, saying:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The leader continues:

To prepare ourselves to receive God’s Word

and in order for it to heal us,

we recognize ourselves as sinners.

The penitential rite follows. For example:

Have mercy on us, O Lord.

For we have sinned against you.

Show us, O Lord, your mercy.

And grant us your salvation.

May Almighty God have mercy on us;

forgive us our sins,

And bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

The following is said or sung:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

The Gloria is then said or sung:

Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you,

we adore you, we glorify you,

we give you thanks for your great glory.

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us;

you take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

Glória in excélsis Deo

et in terra pax homínibus bonae voluntátis.

Laudámus te, benedícimus te,

adoramus te, glorificámus te,

gratias agimus tibi propter magnam glóriam tuam,

Dómine Deus, Rex cæléstis, Deus Pater omnípotens.

Dómine Fili Unigénite, Jesu Christe,

Dómine Deus, Agnus Dei, Fílius Patris,

qui tollis peccáta mundi, miserére nobis;

qui tollis peccáta mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram.

Qui sedes ad déxteram Patris, miserére nobis.

Quóniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dóminus,

tu solus Altíssimus, Jesu Christe,

cum Sancto + Spíritu : in glória Dei Patris.

Amen.

PRAYER

The leader says the opening prayer:

O God, who on this day,

through your Only Begotten Son,

have conquered death

and unlocked for us the path to eternity,

grant, we pray, that we who keep

the solemnity of the Lord’s Resurrection

may, through the renewal brought by your Spirit,

rise up in the light of life.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity

of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

All sit down.

FIRST READING  (Acts 2:42-47)

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

They devoted themselves

to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life,

to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.

Awe came upon everyone,

and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

All who believed were together and had all things in common;

they would sell their property and possessions

and divide them among all according to each one’s need.

Every day they devoted themselves

to meeting together in the temple area

and to breaking bread in their homes.

They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart,

praising God and enjoying favor with all the people.

And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

PSALM (118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24)

R/ Alleluia ! Alleluia ! Alleluia !

Let the house of Israel say,

“His mercy endures forever.”

Let the house of Aaron say,

“His mercy endures forever.”

Let those who fear the LORD say,

“His mercy endures forever.” R/

I was hard pressed and was falling,

but the LORD helped me.

My strength and my courage is the LORD,

and he has been my savior.

The joyful shout of victory

in the tents of the just: R/

The stone which the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone.

By the LORD has this been done;

it is wonderful in our eyes.

This is the day the LORD has made;

let us be glad and rejoice in it.R/

SECOND READING  (1 Peter 1:3-9)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading,

kept in heaven for you

who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith,

to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time.

In this you rejoice, although now for a little while

you may have to suffer through various trials,

so that the genuineness of your faith,

more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire,

may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor

at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Although you have not seen him you love him;

even though you do not see him now yet believe in him,

you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,

as you attain the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE

If you have chosen to do so, all recite the Victimae paschali in two alternating groups.

Christians, to the Paschal Victim

Offer your thankful praises!

A Lamb the sheep redeems;

Christ, who only is sinless,

Reconciles sinners to the Father.

Death and life have contended

in that combat stupendous:

The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal.

Speak, Mary, declaring

What you saw, wayfaring.

“The tomb of Christ, who is living,

The glory of Jesus’ resurrection;

bright angels attesting,

The shroud and napkin resting.

Yes, Christ my hope is arisen;

to Galilee he goes before you.”

Christ indeed from death is risen,

our new life obtaining.

Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning!

Amen. Alleluia.

GOSPEL (John 20:19-31)

Alleluia. Alleluia.

You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord;

blessed are they who have not seen me, but still believe!

Alleluia.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.

On the evening of that first day of the week,

when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,

for fear of the Jews,

Jesus came and stood in their midst

and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.

As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,

“Receive the Holy Spirit.

Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,

and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve,

was not with them when Jesus came.

So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

But he said to them,

“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands

and put my finger into the nailmarks

and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Now a week later his disciples were again inside

and Thomas was with them.

Jesus came, although the doors were locked,

and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands,

and bring your hand and put it into my side,

and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”

Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?

Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples

that are not written in this book.

But these are written that you may come to believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

At the end of the Gospel, all sing or say again the joy of the Resurrection:

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All are seated, and the leader repeats slowly,

as if it were a far-off echo:

“His mercy endures forever.”

All observe three minutes of silence for silent personal meditation.

All then stand to profess the faith of the Church

saying the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting. Amen.

UNIVERSAL PRAYER

All remain standing for the prayers of the faithful, as prepared ahead of time. The following

intercessions may be used instead, separating the intentions with an intervening moment of silence.

The leader of the prayer says:

Strong in the faith of those who believe without having seen,

let us address our prayer to the Father of Mercy:

All say the refrain:

R/ Because eternal is your Mercy!

O Christ, our brother and our God,

  • Lord God, pour out the grace of your Mercy
upon your Church. R/
  • Send the Spirit of faith
to those who do doubt your mercy; R/
  • Send the Spirit of peace and concord
upon our families; R/
  • Grant joy to all people who
are suffering from solitude; R/
  • Sustain the courage and self-sacrifice
of all those who work caring for the sick
and seeking to find a cure for them; R/
  • Come to the aid of people who are hospitalized
and their families R/
  • In your mercy, open the gates
of eternal happiness to our deceased. R/

The people present may add, in turn, their own intentions. At the end of each of them, all repeat the

refrain together:

R/ Because eternal is your Mercy!

The leader introduces the Lord’s Prayer:

United in the Spirit and in the communion of the Church,

we dare to pray as the Lord Jesus himself

taught us:

All say or sing the Our Father:

Our Father…

Continuing immediately with:

For the kingdom…

Then the leader invites those present to share a sign of peace:

We have just joined our voices

with that of the Lord Jesus to pray to the Father.

We are sons and daughters in the Son.

In the love that unites us with one another,

renewed by the word of God,

we can exchange a gesture of peace,

a sign of the communion

we receive from the Lord.

All then exchange a greeting of peace from a distance: for example, by bowing deeply towards each

other in turn; or, as a family, by blowing each other a kiss. Then all sit down.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

The leader says:

When we cannot receive sacramental communion for lack of a Mass, Pope Francis urges us to

practice spiritual communion, also called “communion of desire.”

The Council of Trent reminds us that this “consists in an ardent desire to feed on the Heavenly

Bread, with a living faith that acts through charity and that makes us participants in the fruits and

graces of the Sacrament.” The value of our spiritual communion depends therefore on our faith in

the presence of Christ in the Eucharist as a source of life, love and unity, and our desire to receive

Communion in spite of our inability to do so.

With that in mind, I now invite you to bow your head, to close your eyes and recollect yourselves.

Silence

Deep in our hearts,

may a burning desire arise within us to unite ourselves with Jesus,

in sacramental communion,

and then to bring His love to life into our lives,

loving others as He loved us.

All remain in silence for 5 minutes for a

heart-to-heart conversation with Jesus Christ.

You may optionally stand and say or sing a beautiful Alleluia once more:

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All remain standing, turning to face the Cross of Christ. With hands joined in prayer, the prayer

leader, in the name of all, says the prayer of blessing:

FINAL BLESSING

May God, who by the Resurrection of his Only Begotten Son

was pleased to confer on us

the gift of redemption and of adoption,

give us gladness by his blessing. Amen.

May he, by whose redeeming work

we have received the gift of everlasting freedom,

make us heirs to an eternal inheritance. Amen.

May we, who have already risen with Christ

in Baptism through faith,

by living in a right manner on this earth,

be united with him in the homeland of heaven. Amen.

All together, each with hands joined in prayer:

And may the blessing of almighty God,

come down on us and remain with us for ever. Amen.

All make the Sign of the Cross.

Then parents may trace the Sign of the Cross on their children’s foreheads.

To conclude the celebration, the participants may sing the Regina Caeli,

or some other joyful, well-known Marian hymn.

Regína caéli, lætáre, Allelúia!

Quia quem meruísti portáre, Allelúia!

Resurréxit, sicut dixit, Allelúia!

Ora pro nóbis Déum, Allelúia!

O Queen of heaven rejoice! Alleluia!

For He whom thou didst merit to bear, Alleluia!

Hath arisen as he said, Alleluia!

Pray for us to God, Alleluia!

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

The Lord said to Blessed Faustina:

“You will recite this chaplet on the beads of the Rosary in the following manner:”

First of all, you will say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the I Believe In God.

Then: On the Our Father Beads you will say the following words:

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the Hail Mary Beads you will say the following words:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

In conclusion ThreeTimes you will recite these words:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. (Diary, 476)

Our Lord said to Blessed Faustine:

Unceasingly recite this chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death … Priest will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even the most hardened sinner, if he recites this chaplet even once, will receive grace from My infinite mercy (687) … Oh, what great graces I will grant to souls who will recite this chaplet (848) … Through the chaplet you will obtain anything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will (1731) … I want the whole world to know My infinite mercy. I want to give unimaginable graces to those who trust in My mercy (687).

Speak, Lord . . . Your Servant Listens +++

Prayer is, in the strictest sense, a humble religious petition of man to God to seek divine benevolence and benefits he needs for life, both temporal and eternal. It is a conversation with God, either by accepted prayer forms, or from the heart. Here, then, in conversational verse, is a hypothetical talk the Lord might have with us, His children……….

It is not necessary my child, to know much in order to please me much; it is enough that you love me fervently. Speak here to me then, as you would speak to your most intimate friend, to your mother, to your brother.

So, you want to ask me to do something for someone? Tell me his name. Is it your parents, your brothers, your friends? Tell me what you want me to do for them now. Ask much, very much: do not hesitate to ask. I love generous hearts who somehow can come to forget themselves to look after the needs of others. Speak sincerely to me then, of the poor you would console, of the sick you see suffering, of the strayed you yearn to see return to the right path, of those absent friends you want at your side again. Say at least one word for each, the ardent word of a friend. Remind me that I have promised to listen to every petition that arises from the heart, and is not a prayer for those whom your heart especially loves such a pray?

And for you: do you need a particular favor? Make a list, as it were, of your needs, and come and read it in my presence.

Tell me frankly that you are prone to anger, that you love sensuality and pleasure, that you are perhaps proud, variable, negligent . . . Ask me to come to the help of those efforts, many or few, which you undertake to free yourself from these faults.

Do not be ashamed, poor soul; there are in Heaven so many saints who had these same defects; but they prayed humbly, and little by little they saw themselves freed from them.

Do not hesitate to ask Me for spiritual and material goods; for health, memory, success in your work, enterprises and studies; all these I can give and I do give — as long as they do not hinder, but rather assist your sanctification. Precisely today, what do you need? What can I do for you? If only you knew how much I would like to help you!

Do you have, right now, some project in mind? Tell me everything in detail. What preoccupies you? What are you thinking? What do you want? What do you want me to do for your parents, your brothers, your children, your superiors? What would you want to do for them?

And for me, do you feel an attraction for my glory? Do you not want to do something for those friends whom you love much but who perhaps live separated from me?

Tell me what in particular attracts your attention today, what you desire most ardently and what means you have of obtaining it? Tell me if your plans are not working and I will tell you the causes of your difficulties. Do you not want to interest me in your quest? My dear one, I am the Lord of hearts and I move them, without violating their freedom, to wherever I please.

Are you perhaps sad, or in bad humor? Tell me, tell me, you inconsolable soul, tell me your sorrows in all their details. Who wounded you? come close to my Heart, and find in it a refreshing balsam for the wounds in yours. Then, you will confess that, like me, you forgive everything, you forget everything. In appreciation, you will receive my consoling benediction.

Are you perhaps afraid? Do you feel in your soul those vague stirrings of sadness which, however unjustified, can be so tearing? Throw yourself in the arms of my Providence. I am with you. I am at your side. I see everything. I hear everything. I shall not abandon you for one moment.

Do you feel ignored by persons who loved you once but who now have forgotten you without cause? Pray from them and I will bring them back to you if they are not obstacles to your salvation.

And don’t you have, perhaps, some joy to communicate to me? Why don’t you let me share it with you, like a friend?

Tell me what has consoled and gladdened your heart since yesterday, since you last visited me. Perhaps you have had an agreeable surprise; perhaps you have seen grave doubts dissipated, or you have received good news — a letter, or perhaps a gesture of love. Maybe you have overcome some difficulty, or come out of a trying situation. All of this is my work. I have obtained this for you. Why not show me your gratitude and say, like a child to its father, “Thank you, my Father, thank you.” Gratitude brings forth new gifts since benefactors, as you know, like to see themselves appreciated.

Do you not have a promise to make to me? I read, you know, the bottom of hearts. Men are easily deceived, but not God. Speak to me, then honestly; do you have firm intentions of avoiding the occasion of sin? Of denying yourself that object that harmed your soul? Of not reading again that book which excited your imagination? Of avoiding that person who disturbed the peace of your soul?

Will you be kind to that person who, because he offended you, you have regarded as an enemy?

And now, my child return to your work, to your office, to your family, to your studies — but do not forget these fifteen minutes of intimate conversation we have had in the privacy of the sanctuary. Keep as much as possible, silence, resignation, modesty, charity towards your neighbors. Love and honor my Mother, who is also your Mother. And please come again tomorrow with an even more fervent heart, to unite it to mine. In it you will find every day new love, new gifts, new consolation. Here I await you.

ACT OF CONSECRATION OF ONESELF TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

Historically, devotion to the Heart of Mary grew up in parallel, but at a lesser intensity than that of devotion to the Heart of Jesus, only starting to become more prominent during the time of St John Eudes. John Eudes was born in 1601 in Normandy, France. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory of France, founded in 1611 by Cardinal de Berulle and was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1625.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2018 - Claretian ...

St. John brought people to love Christ and the Virgin Mary by speaking tirelessly about their Heart, the sign of the love God shows for us and the communion to which we are called.

To offer them liturgical worship, he composed Masses and Offices in their honor and had the first Feast of the Holy Heart of Mary celebrated on February 8, 1648, at Autun (France,) and the Feast of the Heart of Jesus celebrated on October 20, 1672.

He died on August 19, 1680 and was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 31, 1925.

Nevertheless, it was not until after the Apparitions at Rue du Bac concerning the “Miraculous Medal” made to Catherine Labouré in 1830, and the establishment of a society dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, at the Church of Our Lady of Victories in Paris in 1836, that this particular devotion became really well known.

Since then devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, has gradually grown more widespread in the Church, particularly since the apparitions at Fatima.

The main difference between the devotions to the hearts of Jesus and Mary is that the one concerned with Jesus emphasizes his divine heart as being full of love for mankind, but with this love for the most part being ignored or rejected, while devotion to Mary’s heart is essentially concerned with the love that her heart has for Jesus, for God.

Therefore, it is not an end in itself, so the love of her heart is meant to be a model for the way we should love God. The fact that her heart is immaculate, that is sinless, means that she is the only fully human person who is able to really love God in the way that he should be loved.

Honoring Mary’s Immaculate Heart is really just another way of honoring Mary as the person who was chosen to be the Mother of God, recognizing her extraordinary holiness and the immense love she bestowed on Jesus as his mother, the person who was called to share in and co-operate in his redemptive sufferings.

The aim of the devotion is to unite mankind to God through Mary’s heart, and this process involves the ideas of consecration and reparation. A person is consecrated to Mary’s Immaculate Heart as a way of being completely devoted to God. This involves a total gift of self, something only ultimately possible with reference to God; but Mary is our intermediary in this process of consecration.

Because of the strong analogy between Jesus and Mary, the consecration to Mary’s Immaculate Heart is closely linked to the consecration to Jesus’ Sacred Heart, although it is subordinate and dependent on it. That is, although the act of consecration is ultimately addressed to God, it is an act that is made through Mary.

PRAYER

I, (Name), a faithless sinner –

renew and ratify today in thy hands,

O Immaculate Mother,

the vows of my Baptism;

I renounce forever Satan,

his pomps and works;

and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ,

the Incarnate Wisdom,

to carry my cross after Him

all the days of my life,

and to be more faihful to Him

than I have ever been before.

In the presence of all the heavenly court

I choose thee this day,

for my Mother and Mistress.

I deliver and consecrate to thee,

as thy slave, my body and soul,

my goods, both interior and exterior,

and even the value of all my good actions,

past, present and future;

leaving to thee the entire

and full right of disposing of me,

and all that belongs to me, without exception,

according to thy good pleasure,

for the greater glory of God,

in time and in eternity.

Amen.

A PRAYER IN COMMEMORATION OF THE SEVEN WORDS SPOKEN BY JESUS ON THE CROSS

God, come unto my assistance.

R. O Lord, make haste to help me.

V. Glory be, etc.

R. As it was, etc.

The First Word

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Dear Jesus, who for love of me dost suffer upon the Cross

in order to pay with Thy sufferings

the debt of my sins

and dost open Thy Divine lips to obtain for me

their remission from the eternal justice of God,

have pity on all the faithful

who are in their last agony and upon me;

and when I shall come to that final hour,

by the merits of Thy Most Precious Blood

which was shed for our salvation,

give me such a lively sorrow for my sins

as shall cause my soul to expire

in the bosom of Thine infinite mercy.

Say 3 times Glory Be To The Father…

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

My God, I believe in Thee,

I hope in Thee,

I love Thee

and I repent of having offended Thee by my sins.

The Second Word

This day shalt thou be with Me in paradise.

Dear Jesus, who for love of me dost hang in agony upon the Cross,

and with such readiness and bounty

dost respond to the faith of the good thief

who in the midst of Thy humiliation acknowledges Thee to be the Son of God,

and dost assure him of paradise,

have pity on all the faithful who are in their agony and upon me;

and when I shall come to my latter end,

by the merits of Thy Most Precious Blood,

inspire in my soul a faith so firm and constant

that it shall not waver at any suggestions of the evil spirit;

so may I obtain the reward of Thy holy paradise.

Say 3 times Glory Be To The Father…

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

My God, I believe in Thee,

I hope in Thee,

I love Thee

and I repent of having offended Thee by my sins.

The Third Word

Behold thy mother; behold thy son.

Dear Jesus, who for love of me dost hang in agony upon the Cross,

and who, forgetting Thine own sufferings,

dost bequeath to me Thy most holy Mother

as a pledge of Thy love,

in order that, through her,

I may be enabled to have recourse to Thee

with all confidence in my greatest necessities,

have pity on all the faithful

who are in their agony and upon me;

and when I shall come to my latter end,

by the interior martyrdom of Thy dear Mother,

inspire in my heart a firm trust

in the infinite merits of Thy Most Precious Blood,

whereby I may be able to escape the eternal damnation

which I have merited by my sins.

Say 3 times Glory Be To The Father…

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

My God, I believe in Thee,

I hope in Thee,

I love Thee

and I repent of having offended Thee by my sins.

The Fourth Word

My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?

Dear Jesus, who for love of me

dost hang in agony upon the Cross, and who,

adding suffering to suffering,

besides Thy bodily pains,

dost endure with infinite patience

the most painful affliction of spirit

at being abandoned by Thine eternal Father,

have pity on all the faithful

who are in their agony and upon me;

and when I shall come to the hour of death,

by the merits of Thy Most Precious Blood,

give me the grace of suffering with true patience

all the pains and agony of my death-struggle,

so that by uniting my sufferings to Thine,

I may be able at the last to share Thy glory in paradise.

Say 3 times Glory Be To The Father…

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

My God, I believe in Thee,

I hope in Thee,

I love Thee

and I repent of having offended Thee by my sins.

The Fifth Word

I thirst.

Dear Jesus, who for love of me dost hang in agony upon the Cross,

and who, not yet satisfied with so many reproaches and sufferings,

wouldst suffer even more,

if thereby all men might be saved,

showing thus that the whole torrent of Thy Passion

is not enough to slake the thirst of Thy loving Heart,

have pity on all the faithful

who are in their agony and upon me;

and when I shall come to my final hour,

by the merits of Thy Most Precious Blood,

enkindle so great a fire of love within my heart

as shall cause it to die for very desire

of being united to Thee through all eternity.

Say 3 times Glory Be To The Father…

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

My God, I believe in Thee,

I hope in Thee,

I love Thee

and I repent of having offended Thee by my sins.

The Sixth Word

All is finished.

Dear Jesus, who for love of me dost hang in agony upon the Cross,

and from that pulpit of truth dost proclaim

that Thou hast finished the work of our redemption,

whereby man, from being a child of wrath and perdition,

has been made a son of God and an heir of heaven,

have pity on all the faithful who are in their agony and upon me;

and when I shall come to my last hour,

by the merits of Thy Most Precious Blood,

detach me wholly from the world and from myself,

giving me the grace to offer Thee from my heart

the sacrifice of my life in expiation of my sins.

Say 3 times Glory Be To The Father…

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

My God, I believe in Thee,

I hope in Thee,

I love Thee

and I repent of having offended Thee by my sins.

The Seventh Word

Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit.

Dear Jesus, who for the love of me

dost hang in agony upon the Cross,

and who to complete this great sacrifice

dost embrace the will of Thine eternal Father,

resigning Thy spirit into His hands,

and then dost bow Thy head and die,

have pity on all the faithful who are in their agony and upon me;

and when I shall come to my latter end,

by the merits of Thy Most Precious Blood

give me a perfect conformity to Thy Divine will,

so that I may be ready to live or die,

as it shall please Thee;

nor do I desire anything else

except the perfect fulfilment in me of Thine adorable will.

Say 3 times Glory Be To The Father…

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

My God, I believe in Thee,

I hope in Thee,

I love Thee

and I repent of having offended Thee by my sins.

Prayer to the Sorrowful Mother

Most holy Mother of sorrows,

by that soul-piercing martyrdom thou didst undergo

at the foot of the Cross during the three hours’ agony of Jesus,

deign to assist me also,

who am the child of thy sorrows,

in my agony, so that by thine intercession

I may be found worthy to pass from my deathbed

to thy blessed society in paradise.

V. From a sudden and unprovided death,

R. Deliver me, O Lord.

V. From the snares of the devil,

R. Deliver me, O Lord.

V. From everlasting death,

R. Deliver me, O Lord.

Let us pray.

O God, who for the salvation of mankind

hast made for us in the most bitter death of Thy Son

both an example and a refuge;

grant, we beseech Thee,

that we may be found worthy

to obtain the fruit of His great love

in our final peril at the hour of death,

and to be made partakers of our Redeemer’s glory.

Through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.

(Say nine times)

PRAYER TO GOD FOR THE HOME

0

We beseech You, O Lord, visit this home, and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy; let Your holy angels dwell therein so as to preserve us in peace; and let Your blessing be always upon us. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A PRAYER FOR DELIVERANCE FROM AN UNPROVIDED DEATH

Hear us, O God of our salvation! and issue not the decree for the completion of our days before Thou forgivest us our sins; and because penance avails not in hell, and there is no room there for amendment, therefore do we humbly pray and beseech Thee here on earth, that, giving us time to pray for pardon, Thou wouldst grant us also forgiveness of our sins. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Take away, merciful Lord, all errors from Thy faithful people, avert from them the sudden destruction of the wasting pestilence; that those whose wanderings Thou dost justly chastise, Thou wouldst vouchsafe in Thy tender pity to cherish when corrected. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Antiphon – Sin no longer, O my soul! Think upon the sudden change from sin to endless woe. There, in hell, penance is not accepted, and tears profit not. Turn, then, whilst thou hast time; cry out and say: Have mercy upon me, O my God!

Antiphon – In the midst of life we are in death: whom, then, O Lord, shall we seek to be our helper, save Thee, O Lord! although Thou art indeed angry with us because of sins? O Holy Lord, holy and strong, holy and merciful Saviour! deliver us not ever to a bitter death.

V. – Lest, overtaken by the day of death, we seek time for penance, and be not able to find it.

R. – Hearken! O Lord! and have mercy on us; for we have sinned against Thee.

We beseech Thee, Almighty God, receive in Thy fatherly pity Thy people flying to Thee from Thine anger; that they who fear to be chastised by the rod of Thy Majesty in the suddenness of death, may be made worthy to rejoice in Thy gracious pardon. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

We beseech Thee, Almighty God, graciously to incline Thine ear to the assembly of Thy Church, and let Thy mercy prevent Thine anger in our behalf; for if Thou shouldst mark iniquities, no creature shall be able to stand before Thee: but in that marvellous charity, through which Thou didst create us, pardon us sinners, and destroy not the work of Thine own hands by sudden death. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God! in Whose sight every heart trembles and every conscience is awed; show forth Thy mercy upon us Thy suppliants, that we, who trust not in the excellence of our own merit, may never know Thy judgments in the suddenness of our death, but may receive Thy pardon. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER

Most merciful Lord Jesus! by Thine agony and bloody sweat, and by Thy death, deliver me, I beseech Thee, from a sudden and unprovided death. O most gentle Lord Jesus! by Thy cruel and ignominious scourging and crowning with thorns, by Thy cross and most bitter Passion, and by Thy goodness, I humbly pray Thee, let me not die unprepared and pass from this life without the Holy Sacraments. Jesus, my best Beloved, my Lord! by all Thy labours and sorrows, by Thy precious Blood, and by Thy most holy Wounds, and by those last words spoken on the cross by Thee: “Deus meus, Deus meus, ut quid dereliquisti me?? – “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” and again: “Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum,” – “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit,” most ardently I pray Thee, save me from a sudden death. Thy hands, O Redeemer! have wholly made and formed me: ah! suffer not death to take me unawares; give me, I beseech Thee, time for penance; vouchsafe that I may pass from this life happily in Thy grace, that I may love Thee with my whole heart, and praise and bless Thee forever and ever.

Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

Prayer at the End of the Day

Jesus Christ my God, I adore You and I thank You for all the graces You have given me this day. I offer You my sleep and all the moments of this night, and I implore You to keep me safe from sin. To this end I place myself in Your Sacred Side and under the mantle of our Lady, my Mother. Let Your holy angels surround me and keep me in peace; and let Your blessing be upon me.

Amen.
