Prayer of spiritual communion when at home

This prayer unites you with God and all the Masses said throughout the world.

If you are unable to attend Mass on Sunday and remain at home, you can still unite yourself to God and all the Masses said throughout the world.

Here is a brief prayer from the Offices of Spiritual Communion that expresses your desire to be in communion with God, recalling the reality that Mass is still being said, even though you are unable to attend.

In union, dear Lord, with the priests at every altar of your Church, where your Blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. I present to you my soul and body, with the earnest wish that I may be always united to you.

And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, and embrace you with all the affections of my soul. O let nothing ever separate you from me. Let me live and die in your love. Amen.

Pray the “unfailing prayer to St. Joseph” to gain spiritual benefits for you and your loved ones

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires.

O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

O St. Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him close in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen.

Pray for those sick with coronavirus with this short prayer

To help those suffering, here’s a prayer written by Adrienne von Speyr, a Swiss doctor and theologian.

The coronavirus pandemic has been spreading with a breathtaking speed. Prayer remains the best way to help all those who’ve been directly impacted by this disease. This prayer was composed by Adrienne von Speyr, a laywoman and Swiss doctor who converted to Catholicism in 1940 and was a collaborator of the theologian Hans Ursvon Balthasar:

Lord, bless the sick and all those who suffer.

Show them through your suffering on the Cross

that in your Passion all suffering

is meant to redeem the world.

Give them strength, courage and patience.

Grant them by your grace to shine in sickness,

their suffering which contributes to the love,

that transforms the suffering of others.

Amen.

Prayer for strength during sickness

Ask God to give you the strength you need to endure any sickness.

Sickness can prove to be a very difficult trial to endure. Not only are we tested in our bodies, our soul is similarly put under much strain.

Sometimes even our faith in God is tested during such suffering.

Here is a brief prayer to God from The Catholic’s vade-mecum, asking him for strength during your sickness, placing all your trust in him.

O Lord Jesus Christ, I receive this sickness as coming from your fatherly hand. Confirm my soul with strength from above, that I may bear with true Christian patience all the uneasiness, pains, disquiets, and troubles under which I labor; preserve me from all temptations and murmuring thoughts, that in this time of affliction I may in no way offend you; and grant that this and all other earthly trials may be the means of preparing my soul for its passage into eternity, that, being purified from all my sins, I may believe in you, hope in you, love you above all things, and finally, through your infinite merits, be admitted into the company of the blessed in heaven, there to praise you for ever and ever. Amen.

This Spiritual Communion prayer is the easiest to memorize

And bonus: It calls on the example of Mary and all the saints.

Spiritual Communion is becoming more and more habitual as we grow accustomed to the lack of publicly celebrated Masses.

We can more easily make this practice a frequent habit by memorizing a Spiritual Communion prayer.

This one, found in the Daily Roman Missal, is short and easy to commit to memory:

I wish, my Lord, to receive you
with the purity, humility, and devotion
with which your most holy Mother received you,
with the spirit and fervor of the saints.

During dark times, offer to God an act of hope

Hope in God means placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit.

When the world appears to crumble around us, it can be easy to fall into despair. There remains little that brings us joy and we don’t know if anything good will ever happen again.

Yet, it is precisely during those dark times that we need to place our hope in God.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes hope as a “virtue,” explaining how it consists of “placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit” (CCC 1817).

One way to foster hope within us is to frequently pray a short “act of hope” throughout the day. This calls upon the grace of God to flood our soul with a supernatural hope that will endure.

Here is an example of an act of hope, which can be memorized and prayed often.

My God, relying on your infinite mercy and goodness, and recognizing how you are always faithful to your promises, I place all my hope in you! My life is in your hands!

Pray with Pope Francis the entrustment to Our Lady in the time of the pandemic

You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs …

“We fly to Thy protection, O Holy Mother of God …” With these words Pope Francis has asked the Virgin Mary to free Italy and the entire world from the pandemic of the coronavirus.

He offered the prayer in a video message March 11, a day set by the Church in Rome as a day of fasting and prayer for this intention, standing before an image of Our Lady of Divine Love.

As well, the pope’s vicar for Rome, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, celebrated Mass (without a congregation) at the Shrine of Divine Love, outside of Rome, for the intention.

Our Lady under this title is also known as “She who saves the City,” a designation given her in 1944, when a vast crowd followed Pope Pius XII to the image of the Virgin, praying before the fresco for the protection of Rome during the final battle for the city, which led to its liberation from German occupation.

A few days after the Allied entry into the city, Pius XII gave the image the title Salvatrice dell’Urbe.

Here is Pope Francis’ prayer of entrustment, concluding with the most ancient recorded prayer to Our Lady:

O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Prayers from the Bible against plagues

The Bible is full of prayers crying out to God for protection against plagues.

The Bible frequently mentions plagues, and each time those afflicted by them would cry out to God for protection. Prayer was the first response for many in the Bible, as they knew that God had the power to release them from suffering, if it was in his divine will.

Here are a few short prayers found in the Bible that can be prayed during plagues.

TAKE YOUR PLAGUE AWAY FROM ME; I AM RAVAGED BY THE TOUCH OF YOUR HAND. (PSALM 39:11)

O LORD, MY GOD, DO NOT AFFLICT YOUR PEOPLE WITH THIS PLAGUE! (1 CHRONICLES 21:17)

HE WILL RESCUE YOU FROM THE FOWLER’S SNARE, FROM THE DESTROYING PLAGUE. (PSALM 91:3)

HAVE PITY ON ME, LORD, FOR I AM WEAK; HEAL ME, LORD, FOR MY BONES ARE SHUDDERING. (PSALM 6:3)

LORD, TAKE NOTE OF ME; HEAL ME, ALTHOUGH I HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU. (PSALM 41:5)

HEAL ME, LORD, THAT I MAY BE HEALED; SAVE ME, THAT I MAY BE SAVED, FOR YOU ARE MY PRAISE. (JEREMIAH 17:14)

LORD, I AM NOT WORTHY TO HAVE YOU ENTER UNDER MY ROOF; ONLY SAY THE WORD AND MY SERVANT WILL BE HEALED. (MATTHEW 8:8)
