PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13)

Saint Hilary

Prayer for the Morning

Let us proclaim the greatness of our God!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;

To his feet your tribute bring.

Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,

Evermore his praises sing:

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favor

To our fathers in distress.

Praise him still the same as ever,

Slow to chide, and swift to bless.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Glorious in his faithfulness.

Fatherlike he tends and spares us;

Well our feeble frame he knows.

In his hands he gently bears us,

Rescues us from all our foes.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Widely yet his mercy flows.

CANTICLE (Deuteronomy 32:3-7, 10-12)

Guard me as the apple of your eye./ Hide me in the shadow of your wings. (Ps 17:8)

Now and then, God’s people of old needed to be reminded of the care with which his love had surrounded and protected them. Now and then, we do, too!

Oh, proclaim the greatness of our God!

The Rock—how faultless are his deeds,

how right all his ways!

A faithful God, without deceit,

how just and upright he is!

Yet basely has he been treated

by his degenerate children,

a perverse and crooked race!

Is the Lord to be thus repaid by you,

O stupid and foolish people?

Is he not your father who created you?

Has he not made you and established you?

Think back on the days of old,

reflect on the years of age upon age.

Ask your father and he will inform you,

ask your elders and they will tell you:

He found them in a wilderness,

a wasteland of howling desert.

He shielded them and cared for them,

guarding them as the apple of his eye.

As an eagle incites its nestlings forth

by hovering over its brood,

so he spread his wings to receive them

and bore them up on his pinions.

The Lord alone was their leader,

no strange god was with him.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 63:15-16)

Look down from heaven and regard us/ from your holy and glorious palace!/ Where is your zealous care and your might,/ your surge of pity and your mercy?/ O Lord, hold not back,/ for you are our father./ Were Abraham not to know us,/ nor Israel to acknowledge us,/ You, Lord, are our father,/ our redeemer you are named forever.

I will not leave you nor forsake you. (Jos 1:5)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

O Lord, you are our father;/ we are the clay and you the potter:/ we are all the work of your hands. (Is 64:7)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

God will never forsake the work of his hands. Assured of his love, let us place before him our own needs and the needs of the world:

R/Our Redeemer you are named for ever!

You are the rock on which we stand firm:

– uphold those who seek to live justly in places of injustice. R/

You are without deceit:

– free those who conceal their hearts in falsehood and betray others’ trust. R/

You alone are our leader:

– protect us from the allure of false messiahs. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God of justice and of love, you care for your people in every time and place, despite our tendency to stray from you in our foolishness. Keep us in your care from morning until evening, that we may come to rest safely in the shadow of your all-powerful wings. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, JANUARY 12)

Prayer for the Evening

Let our prayer arise before God like incense,

the raising of our hands in prayer

like the evening sacrifice!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

As the darkness draweth nigh,

Daylight fadeth from the sky:

Father, unto thee we call,

Thou who rulest over all.

Light that cannot know decline,

Come within our souls to shine!

All our hearts to thee are known;

Come, possess them as thine own.

Thou alone these hearts can fill,

And their deepest yearning still.

Love that never groweth old,

In thy love our lives enfold!

May the virtue of our lives

Unto thee as incense rise,

When each joy and pain shall be

Joined with Paschal Mystery.

May our gift to thee arise

As an evening sacrifice.

PSALM 141:1-5a, 8

May the spoken words of my mouth,/ the thoughts of my heart,/ win favor in your sight, O Lord. (Ps 19:15)

We can use our treasured capacity for speech to offer prayer, as fragrant as incense before God, or to offer hurt to another.

I have called to you, Lord; hasten to help me!

Hear my voice when I cry to you.

Let my prayer arise before you like incense,

the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.

Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth;

keep watch at the door of my lips!

Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong,

to evil deeds with men who are sinners.

Never allow me to share in their feasting.

If a good man strikes or reproves me it is kindness;

but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.

To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned:

in you I take refuge; spare my soul!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Revelation 8:3-4)

Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.

Each of the elders held a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the holy ones. (Rv 5:8)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. (Eph 5:2)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Our love for God and neighbor is the fire in which the incense of our worship burns sweetly. Let us pray:

R/Receive our prayer, O Lord.

You have called your people to pray always:

– may we grow in awareness that every thought, word, and deed lies open to you. R/

You receive all our offerings in love:

– may we offer them more and more faithfully in love. R/

You have promised us the gift of your Holy Spirit:

– may the fire of divine charity burn in our hearts and in our prayer. R/

You desire to bring all people into your glory:

– receive the souls of those who have died. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May grace, mercy, and peace be with us from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. (cf. 2 Tm 1:2)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, January 1

The root of Jesse has budded,

a star has arisen from Jacob;

a Virgin has brought forth the Savior;

we praise you, our God.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6)

Prayer for the Evening

God is for us refuge and strength:

let us come before him with songs of praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

God is our stronghold and our stay,

Our hope in tribulation;

What though the mountains rock and sway

To earth’s long-hid foundation?

What though the ocean roar,

Fast gaining on the shore,

The hurtling storm rage loud

Beneath the thunder cloud?

Our hearts are all untroubled.

Be still, the Lord is God alone,

Let all the world adore him,

And bending low before his throne,

For pitying grace implore him.

His kingdom is within,

O’er hearts made pure from sin,

Where love that casts out fear

Exults to feel him near,

The Lord of hosts our refuge.

PSALM 27:1-5

Say to those whose hearts are frightened:/ Be strong, fear not!/ Here is your God,/ he comes to save you. (cf. Is 35:4)

Christ is born! Christ has died! Christ is risen from the dead! No storm on earth can harm us now. His perfect love for us has cast out all reason for fear.

The Lord is my light and my help;

whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

before whom shall I shrink?

When evil-doers draw near

to devour my flesh,

it is they, my enemies and foes,

who stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me

my heart would not fear.

Though war break out against me

even then would I trust.

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,

for this I long,

to live in the house of the Lord,

all the days of my life,

to savor the sweetness of the Lord,

to behold his temple.

For there he keeps me safe in his tent

in the day of evil.

He hides me in the shelter of his tent,

on a rock he sets me safe.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 40:9-10)

Go up onto a high mountain,/ Zion, herald of glad tidings;/ Cry out at the top of your voice,/ Jerusalem, herald of good news!/ Fear not to cry out/ and say to the cities of Judah:/ Here is your God!/ Here comes with power/ the Lord God,/ who rules by his strong arm;/ Here is his reward with him,/ his recompense before him.

Fear not, I am with you. (Is 41:10)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid! (Mk 6:50)

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

In the mysteries of Christmas and Epiphany, we celebrate with wonder the truth that in Christ God is Emmanuel, God-with-us. With confidence we pray to him:

R/You are our light and our helper!

For those who feel alone in a world too large for them:

– may they know the sheltering presence of your love. R/

For those who feel bewildered amid the storms that overtake them:

– may they know the safety that you give. R/

For those who feel afraid as death approaches:

– may they find their courage in your light. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May God bring us safely to his heavenly kingdom! Amen. (cf. 2 Tm 4:18)

Saint of the Day: St. André Bessette

Holy Cross Brother (1845-1937)

His life

+ André was born near Montreal, Canada. Orphaned at the age of twelve, he was forced to support himself working as an unskilled laborer in the textile mills of New England.

+ In 1867, André returned to Canada and entered the Congregation of Holy Cross as a lay brother.

+ Known for his generosity and credited with many miracles, especially benefitting the sick and the poor, he was popularly known as the “Miracle Man of Montreal.” He was also quick to attribute any miracles or graces to the intercession of Saint Joseph.

+ In 1904, Brothor André began the work for which he is most remembered: the construction of a shrine in honor of Saint Joseph. Over the decades the first simple wooden structure would become the great Basilica of St. Joseph on Mont-Royal.

+ Saint André Bessette died on January 6, 1937, and was canonized in 2010.

For prayer and reflection

“Put yourself in God’s hands. He abandons no one.”—Saint André Bessette

Spiritual bonus

On January 6, Catholics in certain areas have honored the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title “Our Lady of Cana.” This title reminds us of Mary’s presence at—and participation in—the first of Jesus’ signs (see John 2:1-11). Because it was a manifestation of his divine power, the Miracle at Cana is considered to be part of the Mystery of the Epiphany, which was historically celebrated on this date (see Magnificat Antiphon for Evening II of Epiphany). Mary words to the servants at the wedding are an instruction for all who would be disciples of her Son: “Do whatever he tells you.”

Prayer

Lord our God, friend of the lowly,

who gave your servant, Saint André Bessette,

a great devotion to Saint Joseph

and a special commitment to the poor and afflicted,

help us through his intercession

to follow his example of prayer and love

and so come to share with him in your glory.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6)

Saint André Bessette

Prayer for the Morning

Shout to the Lord, all the earth;

ring out your joy!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Light of all the nations, shine!

Show to us who wait a sign.

God on earth, our host and guest,

Be in flesh made manifest.

Servant Savior, chosen one,

You are God’s beloved Son.

Let your Spirit on us rest;

Be in us made manifest.

Radiance of the Father’s face,

Shine in love in every place.

Splendor of God’s glory bright,

Lead us to eternal light!

PSALM 98:2-9

From my flesh I shall see God;/ my inmost being is consumed with longing. (Jb 19:26)

The long biblical tradition, echoed by Saint John in today’s first reading, said that no one could look upon the face of God and live. Yet in the human face of Jesus Christ, the Son of God made flesh for our salvation, we have seen the true face of God’s unimaginable love.

The Lord has made known his salvation;

has shown his justice to the nations.

He has remembered his truth and love

for the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation of our God.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth,

ring out your joy.

Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp

with the sound of music.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn

acclaim the King, the Lord.

Let the sea and all within it thunder;

the world, and all its peoples.

Let the rivers clap their hands

and the hills ring out their joy.

Rejoice at the presence of the Lord,

for he comes to rule the earth.

He will rule the world with justice

and the peoples with fairness.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Leviticus 10:3)

This is as the Lord said: Through those who approach me I will manifest my sacredness;/ In the sight of all the people I will reveal my glory.

Just so, your light must shine before others,

that they may see your good deeds and glorify

your heavenly Father. (Mt 5:16)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

We have seen his glory. (cf. Jn 1:14)

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, JANUARY 5)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is our Shepherd:

come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Sweet Savior, bless us ere we go;

Thy Word into our minds instill,

And make our lukewarm hearts to glow

With lowly love and fervent will.

R/ Through life’s long day and death’s dark night,

O gentle Jesus, be our Light.

Labor is sweet, for thou hast toiled,

And care is light, for thou hast cared;

Let not our works with self be soiled,

Nor in unsimple ways ensnared. R/

For all we love, the poor, the sad,

The sinful, unto thee we call;

O let thy mercy make us glad:

Thou art our Jesus, and our all. R/

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 40:10a, 11, 13-14, 31

I will appoint over you shepherds after my own heart,/ who will shepherd you wisely and prudently. (Jer 3:15)

In the name of Christ, Saint John Neumann spent himself for the well-being of the Church, God’s beloved flock and vine, in his adopted country, serving in all humility those to whom he had been sent.

Here comes with power

the Lord God.

Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;

in his arms he gathers the lambs,

carrying them in his bosom,

and leading the ewes with care.

Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,

or has instructed him as his counselor?

Whom did he consult to gain knowledge?

Who taught him the path of judgment,

or showed him the way of understanding?

They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength,

they will soar as with eagles’ wings;

They will run and not grow weary,

walk and not grow faint.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Acts 20:28, 32)

Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the church of God that he acquired with his own blood. And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated.

The Lord is our shepherd;/ nothing shall we want. (cf. Ps 23:1)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble; and none shall be missing, says the Lord. (Jer 23:4)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

INTERCESSIONS

Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep. Through the intercession of Saint John Neumann, we pray:

R/Loving Shepherd, hear us.

You have led us through wise, prudent, and firm pastors:

– strengthen our pope and bishops in holiness, discernment, and singleness of heart. R/

You have cared for the poor through the generosity of concerned pastors:

– inspire all pastoral leaders and caregivers with a love for those in need. R/

You have brought life to those who live under sentence of death:

– grant to all pastors the gift of compassionate ministry for the dying and the bereaved. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May God carry out in us what is pleasing to him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever. Amen. (cf. Heb 13:21)

Saint of the Day: St. John Neumann

Redemptorist Bishop (1811-1860)

His life

+ John Nepomucene Neumann was born in Bohemia. He had a great desire to serve a priest in the missions of America and, after completing his studies in Europe, he came to the United States and was ordained a priest in New York City in 1836.

+ After realizing his need for life in community, he entered the Redemptorists and, in 1842, became the first person to profess vows as a Redemptorist in the United States; he was later to serve as superior of the American province.

+ In 1852, Neumann was appointed bishop of Philadelphia. He encouraged the establishment of parochial schools, built nearly 80 churches, and founded several communities of sisters. Today the communities of religious sisters established by Bishop Neumann have joined together and are known as the “Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities.”

+ Bishop Neumann was especially interested in finding ways to meet the needs of the many immigrants pouring into the United States, and he was the first bishop in the country to promote the Forty Hours Devotion in his diocese.

+ Saint John Neumann died in 1860 and was canonized in 1977.

Spiritual bonus

On this day, the Church also remembers Saint Charles of Mt. Argus, a Passionist priest from the Netherlands who spent most of his life serving in various communities in Ireland and England. A healer and beloved confessor, he was always available to those who needed his support and prayers—Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Saint Charles died in 1893 and was canonized in 2007.

For reflection

“As Christ has his work, we too have ours; as he rejoiced to do his work, we must rejoice in ours also.”—Saint John Neumann

Prayer

O God, who called the Bishop Saint John Neumann,

renowned for his charity and pastoral service,

to shepherd your people in America,

grant by his intercession

that as we foster the Christian education of youth

and are strengthened by the witness of brotherly love,

we may constantly increase the family of your Church.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, JANUARY 5)

Saint John Neumann

Prayer for the Morning

Jesus Christ is our one true treasure:

come, let us adore.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,

Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!

What more can he say than to you he has said,

You, who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?

In every condition, in sickness, in health;

In poverty’s vale, or abounding in wealth;

At home and abroad, on the land, on the sea,

As your days demand shall your strength ever be

PSALM 112:1-9

You know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sake he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich. (2 Cor 8:9)

Saint John Neumann lived in poverty in order to preach the Gospel without hindrance. His concern was not for his own comfort but for the religious and educational needs of those he had left his homeland to serve, especially those who, like himself, were immigrants to the United States.

Happy the man who fears the Lord,

who takes delight in all his commands.

His sons will be powerful on earth;

the children of the upright are blessed.

Riches and wealth are in his house;

his justice stands firm for ever.

He is a light in the darkness for the upright:

he is generous, merciful and just.

The good man takes pity and lends,

he conducts his affairs with honor.

The just man will never waver:

he will be remembered for ever.

He has no fear of evil news;

with a firm heart he trusts in the Lord.

With a steadfast heart he will not fear;

he will see the downfall of his foes.

Open-handed, he gives to the poor;

his justice stands firm for ever.

His head will be raised in glory.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Mark 10:29-31)

Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. But many that are first will be last, and [the] last will be first.”

It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

We are treated as poor yet enriching many; as having nothing and yet possessing all things. (cf. 2 Cor 6:8, 10)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Through the intercession of Saint John Neumann, let us pray:

R/Lord, you hear the cry of the poor!

You have taught your disciples to hold the poor in special regard:

– inspire in all pastoral leaders Saint John’s love for poverty and the poor. R/

You have sent your disciples out to all the world to preach the Good News:

– protect in your love all those pastors who serve far from their native place. R/

You call your servants to leave home and family for the service of the Gospel:

– grant parents the generosity to allow and encourage their children to respond to your call, as Mary

allowed her Son to leave his home. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord our God, you sent your Son among us as a stranger, stripped of all majesty and privilege, that from his poverty the entire world might be enriched with the incomparable gift of redemption. Sustain all pastors who desire to set their people’s needs above their own, and inspire all who hear the pastoral call to serve, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, JANUARY 4)

Prayer for the Evening

Let our lips be filled with God’s praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

We praise you, Lord, with joy this day

As proudly we proclaim

That in her life this woman’s love

Has glorified your name.

She longed for Christ, she yearned for him

To see him face to face,

And through the long and patient years

She found in him her peace.

She walked in harmony with God,

Her eyes were on the Lord,

And in the struggles of each day

Her calm was in his word.

PSALM 63:2-9

Go, then! It is I who will assist you in speaking and will teach you what you are to say. (Ex 4:12)

Elizabeth Ann Seton taught to her own family, to her religious community, and to the countless children educated by her Sisters of Charity the wonders of God’s love which she had learned in meditation, prayer, and obedience to God’s word.

O God, you are my God, for you I long;

for you my soul is thirsting.

My body pines for you

like a dry, weary land without water.

So I gaze on you in the sanctuary

to see your strength and your glory.

For your love is better than life,

my lips will speak your praise.

So I will bless you all my life,

in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul shall be filled as with a banquet,

my mouth shall praise you with joy.

On my bed I remember you.

On you I muse through the night

for you have been my help;

in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.

My soul clings to you;

your right hand holds me fast.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Colossians 3:16)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. (Eph 5:10)

CANTICLE OF MARY

If you are willing to listen, you will learn;/ if you give heed, you will be wise. (Sir 6:33)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, January 1

The root of Jesse has budded,

a star has arisen from Jacob;

a Virgin has brought forth the Savior;

we praise you, our God.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, JANUARY 4)

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

Prayer for the Morning

To God we lift up our hearts in prayer and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Forth in your name, O Lord, I go,

My daily labor to pursue,

You, only you, resolved to know,

In all I think, or speak, or do.

The task your wisdom has assigned

O let me cheerfully fulfill,

In all my works your presence find,

And prove your acceptable will!

Give me to bear your easy yoke,

And every moment watch and pray,

And still to things eternal look,

And hasten to your glorious day.

For you delightfully employ

Whate’er your bounteous grace has given;

And run my course with even joy,

And closely walk with you to heaven.

PSALM 18:2-4, 29-30, 32-33, 36-37

My feet kept to the level path/ because from earliest youth I was familiar with wisdom. (cf. Sir 51:15)

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s path took many unexpected turnings because she followed God’s will rather than her own. What matters most is that the path God chose took her to him. In her obedience lay the source of the wisdom with which she taught others to follow in God’s ways.

I love you, Lord, my strength,

my rock, my fortress, my savior.

My God is the rock where I take refuge;

my shield, my mighty help, my stronghold.

The Lord is worthy of all praise:

when I call I am saved from my foes.

You, O Lord, are my lamp,

my God who lightens my darkness.

With you I can break through any barrier,

with my God I can scale any wall.

For who is God but the Lord?

Who is a rock but our God?

The God who girds me with strength

and makes the path safe before me.

You gave me your saving shield;

you upheld me, trained me with care.

You gave me freedom for my steps;

my feet have never slipped.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 24:28-31)

Now I, like a rivulet from [wisdom’s] stream,/ channeling the waters into a garden,/ Said to myself, “I will water my plants,/ my flower bed I will drench”;/ And suddenly this rivulet of mine became a river,/ then this stream of mine, a sea./ Thus do I send my teachings forth shining like the dawn,/ to become known afar off./ Thus do I pour out instruction like prophecy/ and bestow it on generations to come.

The path of the just is like shining light,/

that grows in brilliance till perfect day.(Prv 4:18)
