PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, AUGUST 30)
Prayer for the Evening
Jesus Christ is Lord! Come, let us adore him.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!
HYMN
“Take up your cross,” the Savior said,
“If you would my disciple be;
Deny yourself, the world forsake,
And humbly follow after me.”
Take up your cross, let not its weight
Fill your weak spirit with alarm;
His strength shall bear your spirit up,
And brace your heart and nerve your arm.
Take up your cross, nor heed the shame,
Nor let your foolish pride rebel;
Your Lord for you the cross endured,
And saved your soul from death and hell.
Take up your cross and follow Christ,
Nor think till death to lay it down;

CANTICLE (Philippians 2:6-11)
Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Mt 16:25)
Jesus did not hesitate to take up the cross for our sake. Will we refuse to take it up for his sake and for the sake of all those for whom he died? If we do refuse, we may gain temporary benefits, but what will we lose in the long run?
Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not deem equality with God
something to be grasped at.
Rather, he emptied himself
and took the form of a slave
being born in the likeness of men.
He was known to be of human estate
and it was thus that he humbled himself,
obediently accepting even death,
death on a cross!
Because of this,
God highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
above every other name,
So that at Jesus’ name
every knee must bend
in the heavens, on the earth,
and under the earth,
and every tongue proclaim
to the glory of God the Father:
Jesus Christ is Lord!
Word of God (Mark 10:29-30)
Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.”
Come, follow me. (Mk 10:21)
CANTICLE OF MARY
What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? (Mt 16:26)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

INTERCESSIONS
The cross looks like unbearable suffering, but, seen through the eyes of faith, it is the doorway to eternal glory. We pray:
R/Let us follow you, O Lord.
When we fear the cost of discipleship:
– strengthen us in love. R/
When we cling to goods we cannot bear to abandon:
– grant us freedom of heart. R/
When we hold on to life because we do not trust your love:
– grant us final perseverance and a happy death. R/

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,
shining exceedingly as the dawn?
Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,
fair as the moon, bright as the sun.
Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia ergo, advocata nostra,
illos tuos misericordes oculos
ad nos converte.
