PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18)

The Dedication of the Basilicas of Saints Peter and Paul; Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne

Prayer for the Morning

Let us praise the God of mystery and love!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Father, Source of life adored,

Creation’s Author and its Lord!

The universe doth well proclaim

Thine everlasting praise and Name.

Thy word was spoken and ’twas done:

The planets, stars and mighty suns

Fell from thy fingers into space,

Each taking its appointed place.

If we could see with single eye

The wondrous pattern and design

Of this bright ornament of space,

Perhaps it would reveal thy face.

And while with breathless awe we see

This vast creation’s praise of thee,

We join our voices to adore

Thine endless wisdom evermore.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 40:10-14

Who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him? (1 Cor 2:16)

God is mystery. The maker of the universe dwells in light inaccessible, so bright that it blinds the probing eye, the questioning mind. Yet this awesome God has taken on a human face and a human name in Jesus, his Son and Word, the Good Shepherd who carries his stumbling sheep to safe pasture.

Here comes with power

the Lord God,

who rules by his strong arm;

here is his reward with him,

his recompense before him.

Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;

in his arms he gathers the lambs,

carrying them in his bosom,

and leading the ewes with care.

Who has cupped in his hand the waters of the sea,

and marked off the heavens with a span?

Who has held in a measure the dust of the earth,

weighed the mountains in scales

and the hills in a balance?

Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,

or has instructed him as his counselor?

Whom did he consult to gain knowledge?

Who taught him the path of judgment,

or showed him the way of understanding?

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Proverbs 30:4-5)

“Who has gone up to heaven and come down again—/ who has cupped the wind in his hands?/ Who has bound up the waters in a cloak—/ who has marked out all the ends of the earth?/ What is his name, what is his son’s name,/ if you know it?”/ Every word of God is tested;/ he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Truly with you God is hidden,/ the God of Israel,

the savior! (Is 45:15)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

When all the nations of the earth see you bearing the name of the Lord, they will stand in awe of you. (Dt 28:10)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With reverence and love, let us lay before our God the needs of the world.

R/Hear us, O God our Savior!

For those who do not hold you in awe:

– grant that they might come to put their trust in your power and might. R/

For those who fear to approach you in prayer:

– grant that they might come to know you as Father and Shepherd. R/

For those who sense your mystery within the mysteries discovered by scientific study:

– grant that they might come to believe in you as Creator of the universe. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, hidden in light inaccessible, you have revealed the face of your love in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Grant us the grace to worship you with reverence and to entrust ourselves to you in love, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
