PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25)

Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Prayer for the Morning

Let us bless the Lord at all times,

God’s praise always on our lips!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

This day God sends me

Strength as my steersman,

Might to uphold me,

Wisdom as guide.

Your eyes are watchful,

Your ears are listening,

Your lips are speaking,

Friend at my side.

God’s way is my way,

God’s shield is round me,

God’s host defends me,

Saving from ill.

Angels of heaven,

Drive from me always

All that would harm me,

Stand by me still.

PSALM 34:2-5, 8-9

The angel of God, who had been leading Israel’s camp, now moved and went around behind them. (Ex 14:19)

The Psalmist refers here to the angel of the Lord who stood between the fleeing Israelites and their Egyptian pursuers during the exodus, and hid them from sight. God goes with us, guards us, and guides us today with the same protective love.

I will bless the Lord at all times,

his praise always on my lips;

in the Lord my soul shall make its boast.

The humble shall hear and be glad.

Glorify the Lord with me.

Together let us praise his name.

I sought the Lord and he answered me;

from all my terrors he set me free.

The angel of the Lord is encamped

around those who revere him, to rescue them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.

He is happy who seeks refuge in him.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 30:20-21)

The Lord will give you the bread you need/ and the water for which you thirst./ No longer will your Teacher hide himself,/ but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher,/ While from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears:/ “This is the way; walk in it,”/ when you would turn to the right or to the left.

He will be gracious to you when you cry out. (Is 30:19)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

O Lord, you are my God,/ I will extol you and praise your name;/ For you have fulfilled your wonderful plans of old,/ faithful and true. (Is 25:1)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray in Christ for all those who are in need of God’s care and protection today:

R/Lord, answer those who seek you!

For those who are in flight from any kind of danger:

– be their protection. R/

For those who live in terror or in want:

– set them free. R/

For those who seek to know your will and do it:

– show them the way. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Almighty God, you are the help and protection of your people. Give us this day the daily bread of your Word; guide us in your ways; bring us safely to evening, that we may give you thanks and praise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WYD’23 official prayer published

The prayer is addressed to Our Lady of the Visitation.

The official prayer for World Youth Day 2023 (WYD), to be held in Lisbon, was given by the Holy See Press Office on November 22.

On the same day, a delegation of young people from Portugal received the “symbols” of the World Youth Day—the WYD Cross and a reproduction of the Marian icon Salus populi romani—at the end of the Mass for the Feast of Christ the King in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Our Lady of the Visitation,

you who left in haste towards the mountain to meet Elizabeth,

lead us also to meet all those who await us

to deliver them the living Gospel:

Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord!

We will go in a hurry, with no distraction or delay,

but with readiness and joy.

We will go peacefully, because those who take Christ take peace,

and welldoing is the best wellbeing.

Our Lady of the Visitation,

with your inspiration, this World Youth Day

will be the mutual celebration of the Christ we take, as You once did.

Make it a time of testimony and sharing,

fraternization, and giving thanks,

each of us looking for the others who always wait.

With you, we will continue on this path of gathering,

so that our world will gather as well,

in fraternity, justice and peace.

Help us,

Our Lady of the Visitation,

to bring Christ to everyone, obeying the Father, in the love of the Spirit!

In a statement accompanying this prayer, Archbishop José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta, archbishop of Panama, expressed the meaning of this exchange of the cross and image of Mary, a tradition whereby representatives of the previous host country pass the cross and icon to representatives of the upcoming host country.

During the preparation for WYD 2019, this cross and icon “allowed us to meet Jesus and others,” he said, hoping that Portuguese youth can have the same experience. Unable to be present in Rome because of the pandemic, he said he was united “to the joy of the world’s youth” on the occasion of this exchange between the two delegations.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24)

Prayer for the Evening

In God let our hearts rejoice;

he is our help and our shield.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Around the throne a glorious band,

The saints in countless numbers stand,

Of ev’ry tongue, redeemed to God,

Arrayed in garments washed in blood.

Through tribulation great they came;

They bore the cross, despised the shame;

From all their labors now they rest

In God’s eternal glory blest.

PSALM 33:8-9, 12-13, 18-22

My portion is the Lord, says my soul;/ therefore will I hope in him. (Lam 3:24)

The martyrs’ portion is the Lord. For them, that is reward enough. Is it reward enough for us to bear with love the small burdens of the day?

Let all the earth fear the Lord,

all who live in the world revere him.

He spoke; and it came to be.

He commanded; it sprang into being.

They are happy, whose God is the Lord,

the people he has chosen as his own.

From the heavens the Lord looks forth,

he sees all the children of men.

The Lord looks on those who revere him,

on those who hope in his love,

to rescue their souls from death,

to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul is waiting for the Lord.

The Lord is our help and our shield.

In him do our hearts find joy.

We trust in his holy name.

May your love be upon us, O Lord,

as we place all our hope in you.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Philippians 3:8-9a, 9c-11)

I even consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him,…depending on faith to know him and the power of his resurrection and [the] sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Bear your share of hardship for the gospel

with the strength that comes from God. (2 Tm 1:8)

CANTICLE OF MARY

To me life is Christ, and death is gain. (Phil 1:21)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Strengthened by the faith of the martyrs, let us pray:

R/Hear us, O Lord.

You delivered the disciples imprisoned for preaching without fear in your name:

– deliver all those imprisoned in infidelity by fear of displeasing others. R/

You kept your martyrs steadfast in the face of every threat:

– make steadfast those tempted to compromise their discipleship for fear of consequences. R/

You raised to life the martyrs who chose death rather than faithlessness:

– raise all those who have died. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the God of peace be with us all. Amen. (cf. Rom 15:33)

I give you my entire self, Lord Jesus, now and forever.

I invite you into my life, Jesus.

I accept you as my Lord, God and Savior.

Heal me, change me, strengthen me in body, soul, and spirit.

Come Lord Jesus, cover me with your Precious Blood,

and fill me with your Holy Spirit.

I love you Lord Jesus. I praise you Jesus. I thank you Jesus.

Amen.

Mary, My Mother, Queen of Peace, St. Peregrine, the cancer saint, all the Angels and Saints, please help me. Amen.

Say this prayer faithfully, no matter how you feel. When you come to the point where you sincerely mean each word with all your heart, Jesus will change your whole life in a very special way. You will see.

Saint of the Day: St. Andrew Dung-Lac and the Martyrs of Vietnam

Patron Saints of Vietnam. (16th to 19th centuries)

Their story

+ Through the missionary efforts of various religious communities, beginning in the sixteenth century and continuing until 1866, the Vietnamese people heard the message of the Gospel and may came to embrace the Faith despite severe persecutions and the thread of death.

+ In 1988, 117 people martyred during the eighteenth century were canonized. Among those honored were bishops, European and Vietnamese priests, and lay people from every walk of life.

+ Included in this group is the Vietnamese priest, Andrew Dung-Lac, who was one of a group of martyrs killed in 1839.

+ The memorial of these martyrs was extended to the Universal Church in 1989. They are honored as the patrons of Vietnam.

For prayer and reflection

“Come to my aid with your prayers, that I may have the strength to fight according to the law, and indeed to fight the good fight and to fight until the end and so finish the race. We may not again see each other in this life, but we will have the happiness of seeing each other again in the world to come, when, standing at the throne of the spotless Lamb, we will together join in singing his praises and exult for ever in the joy of our triumph. Amen.”—from a letter of Saint Paul Le-Bao-Tinh sent to students of the Seminary of Ke-Vinh in 1843

Spiritual bonus

Also honored on November 24 is the priest and martyr Saint Chrysogonus. Although little is known of his life, his story is entwined with that of another early martyr, Saint Anastasia. Both saints were murdered during the persecution of the emperor Diocletian in the year 304 and are named in the Roman Canon (the First Eucharistic Prayer). Saint Anastasia is celebrated on December 25.

Prayer

O God, source and origin of all fatherhood,

who kept the Martyrs Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and his companions

faithful to the Cross of your Son,

even to the shedding of their blood,

grant, through their intercession,

that, spreading your love among our brothers and sisters,

we may be your children both in name and in truth.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24)

Saint Andrew Dũng-Lac and Companions

Prayer for the Morning

Jesus Christ is the glory of all martyrs:

on this feast of the Vietnamese martyrs,

let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Sing praise for all the martyrs

who carried Jesus’ cross.

They followed in his footsteps;

they counted gain as loss.

Our heroines and heroes,

their blood the Church’s seed,

Whose witness to the Gospel

led to their dying deed.

We praise you for the strength’ning

of Andrew at the last,

Who bravely bore his torments

and to the truth held fast.

Lord, grant our Church for ever

the grace to turn to you,

To follow in your footsteps

with courage ever new.

All praise to God the Father,

who made the martyrs be,

And praise the Holy Spirit,

their fount of charity.

All praises to Christ Jesus,

let crowns before him fall,

Exemplar of the martyrs:

their Joy, their Love, their All.

CANTICLE (Wisdom 3:1-6)

In God’s hand is the soul of every living thing,/ and the life breath of all mankind. (cf. Jb 12:10)

The martyrs bear witness to the core of Christ’s sacrifice: they surrender their lives into God’s hands to do with as he wills. To them, the present cost of their offering counts as nothing in comparison to life with the Lord who awaits them.

The souls of the just are in the hand of God,

and no torment shall touch them.

They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead;

and their passing away was thought an affliction

and their going forth from us, utter destruction.

But they are in peace.

For if before men, indeed, they be punished,

yet is their hope full of immortality;

Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed,

because God tried them

and found them worthy of himself.

As gold in the furnace, he proved them,

and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

We are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.

Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake,

and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking

in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body,

which is the church. (Col 1:24)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The crucible for silver, and the furnace for gold,/ but the tester of hearts is the Lord. (Prv 17:3)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

INTERCESSIONS

The martyrs bear witness to the cost and the reward of living according to the Gospel. Through their intercession, let us pray:

R/Make your people steadfast in faith, O Lord.

For the Church throughout the world:

– that we may live the Gospel faith for which the martyrs died. R/

For those who suffer persecution for the Gospel’s sake:

– that they may find strength in the example of the martyrs. R/

For the Vietnamese Catholic communities who have remained faithful in the midst of war, exile, and hardship:

– that their lives may be a light to their neighbors. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God of all glory, the genuineness of the martyrs’ faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, proved to be for the praise, glory, and honor of Jesus Christ. Through their intercession, grant to all your Church the fortitude of faith, the joy of love, and the determination born of hope through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

God’s are grandeur and power:

come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

Hymn

O God beyond all praising,

We worship you today

And sing the love amazing

That songs cannot repay;

For we can only wonder

At every gift you send,

At blessings without number

And mercies without end:

We lift our hearts before you

And wait upon your word,

We honor and adore you,

Our great and mighty Lord.

Then hear, O gracious Savior,

Accept the love we bring,

That we who know your favor

May serve you as our King;

And whether our tomorrows

Be filled with good or ill,

We’ll triumph through our sorrows

And rise to bless you still:

To marvel at your beauty

And glory in your ways,

And make a joyful duty

Our sacrifice of praise.

Canticle (1 Chronicles 29:10-13)

Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,/ for wisdom and power are his. (Dn 2:20)

What return can we make to God except our prayer of grateful praise? Though he needs nothing, he rejoices in this gift of our love.

Blessed may you be, O Lord,

God of Israel our father,

from eternity to eternity.

Yours, O Lord, are grandeur and power,

majesty, splendor, and glory.

For all in heaven and on earth is yours;

yours, O Lord, is the sovereignty:

Riches and honor are from you,

it is yours to give grandeur and strength to all.

Therefore, our God, we give you thanks

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. (1 Kgs 1:48)

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22)

Prayer for the Evening

May the name of the Lord

be blessed for ever!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

The head that once was crowned with thorns

Is crowned with glory now;

A royal diadem adorns

The mighty victor’s brow.

The highest place that heav’n affords

Belongs to him by right;

The King of kings and Lord of lords,

And heaven’s eternal Light.

The cross he bore is life and health,

Though shame and death to him,

His people’s hope, his people’s wealth,

Their everlasting theme.

PSALM 21:2-9, 14

The Lord is our king! (cf. Is 33:22)

The desire of Christ’s heart is eternal life for all people. That desire has been fulfilled through his Death and Resurrection. All he asks, as he holds open for us the door of his eternal Kingdom, is that we put our lives in his hands and live according to his Kingdom’s law of love, so that all time may come to its completion in him.

O Lord, your strength gives joy to the king;

how your saving help makes him glad!

You have granted him his heart’s desire;

you have not refused the prayer of his lips.

You came to meet him with the blessings of success,

you have set on his head a crown of pure gold.

He asked you for life and this you have given,

days that will last from age to age.

Your saving help has given him glory.

You have laid upon him majesty and splendor,

you have granted your blessings to him for ever.

You have made him rejoice with the joy of your presence.

The king has put his trust in the Lord:

through the mercy of the Most High he shall stand firm.

His hand will seek and find all his foes,

his right hand find out those that hate him.

O Lord, arise in your strength;

we shall sing and praise your power.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Mark 1:14-15)

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus said to them,

“Today this scripture passage is fulfilled

in your hearing.” (cf. Lk 4:21)

TE DEUM

Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (Mt 25:34)

You are God: we praise you;

You are the Lord: we acclaim you;

You are the eternal Father:

All creation worships you.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,

Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you.

The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.

Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded,

your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,

and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the king of glory,

the eternal Son of the Father.

When you became man to set us free

you did not spurn the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the sting of death,

and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory.

We believe that you will come, and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people,

bought with the price of your own blood,

and bring us with your saints

to glory everlasting.

INTERCESSIONS

In humble supplication, let us come before our Lord and King:

R/Thy kingdom come!

You reign now over every power in heaven and earth:

– deliver all those who lie in the power of injustice. R/

You reign now over every nation:

– spread the Good News of your Resurrection into every land. R/

You reign now over sin and death:

– bring into your glorious presence all our beloved dead. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours! Amen.

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22)

“To him belong glory and power for ever.”

The Meaning of the Celebration

+ This feast was introduced by Pope Pius XI in 1925 in response to the rising nationalism, secularism, and new forms injustice that emerged in the years after the First World War.

+ In the encyclical Quas Primas, Pope Pius reminded Christians that the Kingdom to which they belong is “spiritual and concerned with spiritual things… it demands of its subjects a spirit of detachment from riches and earthly things, and a spirit of gentleness. They must hunger and thirst after justice and more than this, they must deny themselves and carry the cross” (no 15).

+ The prayers and readings assigned for this solemnity present a rich and varied presentation of Christ the King, drawing on numerous images from Sacred Scripture.

+ Falling as it does (in the Ordinary Form of the Mass) on the final Sunday of the year, this solemn celebration focus our attention on the One who is the “goal of human history, the focal point of the desires of history and of civilization, the center of humankind, the joy of all hearts, and the fulfillment of all aspirations.” (Gaudium et spes, no. 45).

For prayer and reflection

“How worthy is the Lamb who was slain.

to receive power and divinity,

and wisdom and strength and honor.

To him belong glory and power for ever and ever.”—Entrance antiphon for the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Spiritual bonus

On November 22, we celebrate the memory of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians and singers.

Prayer

Almighty ever-living God,

whose will is to restore all things

in your beloved Son, the King of the universe,

grant, we pray,

that the whole creation, set free from slavery,

may render your majesty service

and ceaselessly proclaim your praise.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22)

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Prayer for the Morning

O worship the King!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Glorious from the field of strife,

Lo! the Victor mounts his throne;

Lord of death and King of life,

His the triumph, his alone—

Glorious from the field of strife,

Christ, immortal King of life.

Wake to gladness, sons of men!

Heav’n, your gates eternal raise!

Welcome to your bliss again

Him, the worthiest of praise—

Glorious from the field of strife,

Christ, immortal King of life.

Sin and death—the twain assailed,

And the Christ expiring fell;

But the Death o’er death prevailed,

And the might of sin and hell;

Victor from the field of strife,

Hail! immortal King of life.

PSALM 146

He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people. (Mt 4:23)

Christ’s reign is a conquest not over political enemies but over the powers of sin and death. His rule is redemption.

My soul, give praise to the Lord;

I will praise the Lord all my days,

make music to my God while I live.

Put no trust in princes,

in mortal men in whom there is no help.

Take their breath, they return to clay

and their plans that day come to nothing.

He is happy who is helped by Jacob’s God,

whose hope is in the Lord his God,

who alone made heaven and earth,

the seas and all they contain.

It is he who keeps faith for ever,

who is just to those who are oppressed.

It is he who gives bread to the hungry,

the Lord, who sets prisoners free,

the Lord who gives sight to the blind,

who raises up those who are bowed down,

the Lord, who protects the stranger

and upholds the widow and orphan.

It is the Lord who loves the just

but thwarts the path of the wicked.

The Lord will reign for ever,

Zion’s God, from age to age.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 7:21-22)

At that time he cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. And he said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.”

Then the righteous will shine like the sun

in the kingdom of their Father. (Mt 13:43)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. (Mt 6:33)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…
