PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us lift up our hearts to the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Saint Andrew, who once cast your nets

Upon the lake of Galilee,

Show now your skill in catching souls,

And save us from the world’s wide sea.

Saint Peter’s brother during life,

Not even death your souls could part,

Since both endured the bitter cross

With patient and courageous heart.

True brothers in your work on earth,

Your crown of glory is the same,

Both fathers of the infant Church,

Both crucified for Jesus’ Name.

You were the first to find Our Lord,

And led your brother to his feet,

So help us on life’s weary way,

Befriend us in its dust and heat.

Companion of your brother’s toil,

Preserve the Church in charity,

That with Saint Peter, shepherd true,

We may serve God in unity.

Belovèd Saint, so dear to Christ,

Help us to run the path of love,

That we may all God’s praises sing,

United in full joy above.

PSALM 25:1-6, 8-10

Then they left their nets and followed him. (Mk 1:18)

This psalm captures the picture of true hope painted by Saint Andrew’s willingness to put his entire life and his death in the Lord’s hands. He dared to leave all familiar securities and to entrust his future to Christ’s promise because he trusted the faithful love Christ had always shown him in the past.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I trust you, let me not be disappointed;

do not let my enemies triumph.

Those who hope in you shall not be disappointed,

but only those who wantonly break faith.

Lord, make me know your ways.

Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my savior.

In you I hope all day long

because of your goodness, O Lord.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

The Lord is good and upright.

He shows the path to those who stray,

he guides the humble in the right path;

he teaches his way to the poor.

His ways are faithfulness and love

for those who keep his covenant and law.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 19:29)

Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.

I am the way

and the truth and the life. (Jn 14:6)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. (Lk 14:27)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Lord, you demanded everything of your disciples—and gave them everything and more, even to life eternal. Through the intercession of Saint Andrew, we pray:

R/To you, O Lord, we lift up our souls!

You called the disciples to leave home, family, and all they had:

– inspire many men and women in our day to leave all things to follow you in lives of dedication to your service. R/

You called the disciples to abandon plans and projects:

– teach us to seek your will rather than our own. R/

You rewarded your disciples with everlasting life:

– bring into the joy of your presence all of our beloved dead. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the Lord guard our going and coming/ both now and for ever. Amen. (cf. Ps 121:8)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon of the Divine Office

My soul magnifies the Lord,

for God has regarded my humility.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle

The First-Called (First Century)

His life

+ Sacred Scripture tells us that Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was a fisherman and that he was also a disciple of Saint John the Baptist.

+ Andrew is often called the Protoclete—the “First-Called”—because he is remembered as the first of the Apostles to have said “yes” to Jesus’ invitation to follow. The Gospel of John also tells us that after Andrew heard John the Baptist call Jesus “the Lamb of God,” he introduced his brother to Jesus (cf. John 1:36-40).

+ Andrew demonstrated his faith when he brought Jesus the boy with five barley loaves and two fish, the simple elements that Jesus transformed into enough food to feed the multitude (cf. John 6:8-9).

+ Andrew was with Jesus on the mountain at the Transfiguration and was also with him in the Garden of Gethsemane during his final hours.

+ According to ancient tradition, Andrew preached in the Gospel in several places after Pentecost. Andrew is said to have been martyred in Patras, Greece, by being crucified on a cross in the form of an X.

+ Saint Andrew is honored as the patron saint of fishermen and fish mongers, as well as various places, including Austria, Greece, Russia, Scotland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Ukraine, along with many other dioceses and cities.

For prayer and reflection

“The Apostle Andrew… teaches us to follow Jesus with promptness (cf. Mt 4: 20; Mk 1: 18), to speak enthusiastically about him to those we meet, and especially, to cultivate a relationship of true familiarity with him, acutely aware that in him alone can we find the ultimate meaning of our life and death.”—Pope Benedict XVI

Prayer

We humbly implore your majesty, O Lord,

that, just as the blessed Apostle Andrew

was for your Church a preacher and pastor,

so he may be for us a constant intercessor before you.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30)

Saint Andrew

Prayer for the Morning

Jesus Christ is the light of the Apostles:

come, let us walk in his way!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

When Christ our Lord to Andrew cried:

“Come, thou, and follow me,”

The fisher left his net beside

The Sea of Galilee.

To teach the truth his Master taught,

To tread the path he trod

Was all his will, and thus he brought

Unnumbered souls to God.

When Andrew’s hour had come, and he

Was doomed like Christ to die,

He kissed his cross exultingly,

And this his loving cry:

“O noble cross, O precious wood!

I long have yearned for thee;

Uplift me to my only Good

Who died on thee for me.”

PSALM 85:9-14

Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mt 16:24)

Saint Andrew showed his courage not by feats of physical prowess but by his unrelenting commitment to the Gospel of the cross written in the blood of Jesus Christ. Andrew died as he had lived, the true servant of his beloved Master, whose message of love and mercy shaped Andrew’s life and death.

I will hear what the Lord God has to say,

a voice that speaks of peace,

peace for his people and his friends

and those who turn to him in their hearts.

His help is near for those who fear him

and his glory will dwell in our land.

Mercy and faithfulness have met;

justice and peace have embraced.

Faithfulness shall spring from the earth

and justice look down from heaven.

The Lord will make us prosper

and our earth shall yield its fruit.

Justice shall march before him

and peace shall follow his steps.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 12:2)

God indeed is my savior;/ I am confident and un-afraid./ My strength and my courage is the Lord,/ and he has been my savior.

Fear not, beloved, you are safe;

take courage and be strong.

(Dn 10:19)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged. (2 Cor 4:1)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

O Lord, you called Saint Andrew from the simple safety of the life of a village fisherman to take the message of salvation to all the world. Through his intercession we pray:

R/Keep us faithful in your service.

You sign all your disciples with the sign of the cross:

– grant us the courage to live what we professed in baptism. R/

You call all your disciples to take up the cross and follow you:

– let no suffering dampen our enthusiasm for the Gospel. R/

You arm all your disciples with the weapons of faith, hope, and charity:

– make us messengers of your peace. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Lord Jesus Christ, Saint Andrew left home and livelihood and even life itself to follow you. May we love you more than life itself and love all of life’s gifts as treasures to be shared with all who are in need. We ask this in your name, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29)

Prayer for the Evening

Christ is close: come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

On walls around Jerusalem

Stand sentinels of light;

They answer all who ask of them

The progress of the night.

“I see him, though not now,” they say,

“Behold him though not near.”

The eye of truth awaits that day

When God is to appear.

The watchmen cry throughout the night,

Reminding God to save,

Nor shall they rest till early light

Announces dawning day.

As sentinels await the dawn

Let Jacob seek the Lord.

Our souls await the Living One:

Jerusalem restored.

PSALM 119:145-152

We earnestly ask and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that, as you received from us how you should conduct yourselves to please God—and as you are conducting yourselves—you do so even more. (1 Thes 4:1)

The Lord whose coming we prepare to celebrate is no stranger. God sent his only Son as our deliverer long ago; we live now in active hope of his return as we renew in this season our desire to live to the full the commands of the covenant he has made with his people.

I call with all my heart; Lord, hear me,

I will keep your commands.

I call upon you, save me

and I will do your will.

I rise before dawn and cry for help,

I hope in your word.

My eyes watch through the night

to ponder your promise.

In your love hear my voice, O Lord;

give me life by your decrees.

Those who harm me unjustly draw near:

they are far from your law.

But you, O Lord, are close:

your commands are truth.

Long have I known that your will

is established for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:1-6)

Concerning times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When people are saying, “Peace and security,” then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.

For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thes 5:9)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Remember then how you accepted and heard; keep it, and repent. If you are not watchful, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come upon you. (Rv 3:3)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

As we prepare for Christ’s coming in glory, let us pray:

R/You, O Lord, are close: hear and save us!

In our inattentiveness to your word: R/

In our carelessness in keeping your commandments: R/

In our indifference to the future: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the Lord strengthen our hearts, to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones. Amen. (cf. 1 Thes 3:13)

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ has opened the gates of heaven:

come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Now is the Victor’s triumph won;

O let the song of praise be sung: R/

R/Alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia!

Death’s mightiest pow’rs have done their worst;

And Jesus has his foes dispersed;

Let shouts of praise and joy outburst: R/

He closed the yawning gates of hell;

The bars from heaven’s high portals fell;

Let hymns of praise his triumphs tell! R/

Lord, by the stripes which wounded thee,

From death’s dread sting thy servants free,

That we may live, and sing to thee: R/

CANTICLE (Isaiah 25:6-9)

Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself. (Phil 3:20-21)

The “faithful departed” are all who have left this earth in God’s friendship, who are being purified in the fires of purgatory so that they can enjoy his presence in heaven for ever. As we look in hope toward the promised rewards of heaven, we pray today for all our beloved dead.

On this mountain the Lord of hosts

will provide for all peoples

A feast of rich food and choice wines,

juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines.

On this mountain he will destroy

the veil that veils all peoples,

The web that is woven over all nations;

he will destroy death forever.

The Lord God will wipe away

the tears from all faces;

The reproach of his people he will remove

from the whole earth; for the Lord has spoken.

On that day it will be said:

“Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!

This is the Lord for whom we looked;

let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!”

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (John 14:1-3)

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.

Remain faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Rv 2:10)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. (1 Jn 3:2)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With trust in God’s promises, we ask mercy for ourselves and for the holy souls in purgatory:

R/Christ our life, hear our prayer.

Grant us the grace of perseverance in prayer and in virtue,

– that, in growing closer to you in this life, we may prepare for life eternal. R/

Through your sorrowful Passion and glorious Resurrection,

– rescue our souls and theirs from suffering hereafter. R/

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,

– rest in peace. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the choir of Angels receive us and, with Lazarus, who was once poor, may we enjoy eternal rest. Amen. (In Paradisum)

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

“O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”

The story of this celebration

+ On November 27, 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré, then a novice with the Daughters of Charity in Paris, France.

+ In the vision, Saint Catherine saw Our Lady standing on a globe with shafts of light streaming from her hands and the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee,” surrounding the image.

+ In the same vision, Catherine saw a capitol “M” with a cross above it and two hears below. The young sister seemed to hear a voice telling her to have she saw struck as a medal, along with a promise that whoever wore the medal would have the protection and intercession of Mary.

+ The first 1,500 of these “Miraculous Medals” were distributed in 1832. A diocesan tribunal approved Catherine’s revelations in 1836.

For prayer and reflection

“Among the various medals of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the most diffuse must be the “Miraculous Medal”… It recalls the mystery of Redemption, the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of the Sorrowful Heart of Mary. It signifies the mediatory role of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mystery of the Church, the relationship between Heaven and earth, this life and eternal life.”—Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy

Spiritual bonus

From the time of the visions until her death in 1876, Catherine Labouré lived simply and virtually unknown in an obscure convent of her community, answering doors, caring for the poultry, and tending the elderly in a hospice. Although she was respected as a good and faithful sister, her superiors spoke of her as being “rather insignificant” and as having been “very matter-of-fact and unexcitable.” Because her name had never been mentioned in connection with the visions or the “Miraculous Medal,” few people knew that Catherine had been responsible for the spread of the devotion. Following her death on December 31, 1876, Catherine Labouré became the object of devotion as being learned the truth about her and she was eventually canonized in 1947.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ,

You have willed that the most Blessed Virgin Mary,

Your Mother, immaculate from the first moment of her conception,

should be glorified by countless miracles;

grant that we, who always implore her patronage,

may attain to eternal happiness.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27)

Prayer for the Morning

Jesus Christ leads us from death to life:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

May flights of angels lead you on your way

To paradise, and heav’n’s eternal day!

May martyrs greet you after death’s dark night,

And bid you enter into Zion’s light!

May choirs of angels sing you to your rest

With once poor Laz’rus, now for ever blest!

PSALM 116:10-19

If he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. (2 Mc 12:44-45)

The Lord greatly desires to bring the souls in purgatory into full union with him in heaven, but in his wisdom has tied the communion of saints together so that we on earth must pray for the Church Suffering in purgatory. As we serve our brothers and sisters here on earth, let us never forget to pray for our brothers and sisters awaiting heaven.

I trusted, even when I said:

“I am sorely afflicted,”

and when I said in my alarm:

“No man can be trusted.”

How can I repay the Lord

for his goodness to me?

The cup of salvation I will raise;

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord

is the death of his faithful.

Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;

you have loosened my bonds.

A thanksgiving sacrifice I make:

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people,

in the courts of the house of the Lord,

in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Job 19:25-27)

Iknow that my Vindicator lives,/ and that he will at last stand forth upon the dust;/ Whom I myself shall see:/ my own eyes, not another’s, shall behold him,/ And from my flesh I shall see God;/ my inmost being is consumed with longing.

If we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him
in the resurrection. (Rom 6:5)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it. (Acts 2:24)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With confidence in the God who made us and who paved a way for our salvation, we pray:

R/Lord, you are our life and resurrection.

God of life eternal, we place all our hope in you:

– hear our prayers in our last hours, and bring us to heaven with you. R/

Source of all joy, consolation in sorrow:

– receive the souls of the faithful departed into your everlasting rest. R/

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,

– and may perpetual light shine upon them. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Father of all, who are perfectly just and perfectly merciful, remember your covenant with your children, that those souls who linger in purgatory for their purification may be swiftly drawn to perfect happiness with the saints in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us thank the Lord with all our hearts!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Sing to the Lord a joyful song;

Lift up your hearts, your voices raise.

To us his gracious gifts belong:

To him our songs of love and praise.

For life and love, for rest and food,

For daily help and nightly care,

Sing to the Lord for he is good,

And praise his name, for it is fair.

For joys untold that from above

Cheer those who love his blest employ,

Sing to our God, for he is love;

Exalt his name, for it is joy.

For life below with all its bliss,

And for the life, more pure and high,

That nobler life which after this

Shall ever shine and never die.

PSALM 138:1-5

How can I repay the Lord/ for his goodness to me? (Ps 116:12)

The debt of gratitude we owe for God’s faithful love can be repaid only in a two-sided coin: turning to God in thanksgiving and doing for others what has been done for us.

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart,

you have heard the words of my mouth.

In the presence of the angels I will bless you.

I will adore before your holy temple.

I thank you for your faithfulness and love

which excel all we ever knew of you.

On the day I called, you answered;

you increased the strength of my soul.

All earth’s kings shall thank you

when they hear the words of your mouth.

They shall sing of the Lord’s ways:

“How great is the glory of the Lord!”

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Colossians 3:15c-17)

Be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! (2 Cor 9:15)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. (Phil 4:6)

Let us lift grateful hearts to God in prayer:

R/Your love is everlasting!

You have blessed us with the gift of life:

– sustain through the generosity of your people all those whose lives are threatened by poverty, disease,

violence, or neglect. R/

You have blessed us with the gift of faith:

– send courageous witnesses and vibrant teachers to inspire faith in all who doubt or disbelieve. R/

You have blessed us with the gift of hope in a life beyond death:

– strike up the joyful hymns of heaven in all those who have died. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May we give thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. Amen. (cf. Eph 5:20)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon of the Divine Office

My soul magnifies the Lord,

for God has regarded my humility.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us praise Jesus Christ, who dwells in our midst!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Cry, faithful messengers of God,

“Behold the great Redeemer’s blood”;

Urge unto him all men to come,

For Jesus says there yet is room.

You naked, poor, oppressed, appear,

Unto Messiah’s door draw near:

Obey the call, undoubting come,

For Jesus says there yet is room.

Whoever Jesus Christ believe,

That favored soul shall ever live;

Shall taste below of joys to come,

And Jesus says there yet is room.

PSALM 113

So now, O children, listen to me,/ be attentive to the words of my mouth! (Prv 7:24)

Jesus Christ, the Word of God, is Emmanuel, “God-with-us.” Today, as during his earthly life, he dwells among the poor, the lowly, the brokenhearted, and the crushed in spirit, bringing peace and healing all wounds by the power of his living Word. His disciples are still commanded to “go and do likewise.”

Praise, O servants of the Lord,

praise the name of the Lord!

May the name of the Lord be blessed

both now and for evermore!

From the rising of the sun to its setting

praised be the name of the Lord!

High above all nations is the Lord,

above the heavens his glory.

Who is like the Lord, our God,

who has risen on high to his throne

yet stoops from the heights to look down,

to look down upon heaven and earth?

From the dust he lifts up the lowly,

from his misery he raises the poor

to set him in the company of princes,

yes, with the princes of his people.

To the childless wife he gives a home

and gladdens her heart with children.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 57:15)

Thus says he who is high and exalted,/ living eternally, whose name is the Holy One:/ On high I dwell, and in holiness,/ and with the crushed and dejected in spirit,/ To revive the spirits of the dejected,/ to revive the hearts of the crushed.

Whoever keeps Christ’s word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. (cf. 1 Jn 2:5)

Saint Catherine of Alexandria (Patron Saint of Philosophers)

Virgin and Martyr (d. ca. 305)

Her life

+ The life of this early saint is largely shrouded in legend and some have even questioned her existence, because so little is known about her. Although her name was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969 (although she continued to be included in the Church’s official list of saints), her commemoration was re-introduced in 2002. In respect for the privileged place she holds in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

+ According to long-standing tradition, which surrounds her life in mystery, Catherine was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and after converting to Christianity, she became a zealous witness for Christ and helped bring many to the Christian Faith.

+ She criticized the prefect Maxentius for his persecution of Christians and he ordered that fifty of Catherine’s converts be burned to death. He then offered Catherine his hand in marriage if she would deny Christ.

+ When Catherine refused, she was thrown into prison and condemned to death. She was to be killed on a spiked wheel (now commonly known as a “Catherine wheel”), but the torture device was miraculously broken into pieces.

+ Whatever the circumstances of her life and death, Saint Catherine of Alexandria is thought to have been martyred around the year 304.

+ Saint Catherine was one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages and she has come to be honored as the patron of philosophers, on account of her heavenly wisdom and skill in arguing with Maxentius.

For prayer and reflection

“Deep waters cannot quench love, nor floods sweep it away. Were on to offer all they own to purchase love, they would be roundly mocked.”—Song of Songs 8:7

Prayer

Almighty ever-living God,

who gave Saint Catherine of Alexandria to your people

as a Virgin and an invincible Martyr,

grant that through her intercession

we may be strengthened in faith and constancy

and spend ourselves without reserve

for the unity of the Church.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.
