PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is a lamp for our steps:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Come, let us raise our songs of celebration,

Joining the triumph train of this confessor,

Father and leader, now above the heavens

Reigning forever.

He spent his gifts to sanctify the many,

He was a priest, a ruler, and a teacher,

Leading with judgment, fostering a people

For gifts eternal.

Now let us ask him earnestly for favor:

Cleansing of all the sins of his beloved;

And by his fervent prayers we may be lifted

To the high heavens.

PSALM 19:8-11, 15

By wisdom is a house built,/ by understanding is it made firm;/ And by knowledge are its rooms filled/ with every precious and pleasing possession. (Prv 24:3-4)

This patron of catechists was deeply devoted to Christian formation for all people in the Church. In addition to his contributions to the education of the laity, he laid the groundwork for the seminary system of priestly formation. He left a legacy of great spiritual wealth to the whole Church.

The law of the Lord is perfect,

it revives the soul.

The rule of the Lord is to be trusted,

it gives wisdom to the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right,

they gladden the heart.

The command of the Lord is clear,

it gives light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is holy,

abiding for ever.

The decrees of the Lord are truth

and all of them just.

They are more to be desired than gold,

than the purest of gold,

and sweeter are they than honey,

than honey from the comb.

May the spoken words of my mouth,

the thoughts of my heart,

win favor in your sight, O Lord,

my rescuer, my rock!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Wisdom 7:11-14)

All good things together came to me in [Wisdom’s] company,/ and countless riches at her hands;/ And I rejoiced in them all, because Wisdom is their leader,/ though I had not known that she is the mother of these.

Simply I learned about her, and ungrudgingly do I share—/ her riches I do not hide away;/ For to men she is an unfailing treasure;/ those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God,/ to whom the gifts they have from discipline commend them.

God is the guide of Wisdom/ and the director of the wise. (cf. Wis 7:15)

CANTICLE OF MARY

When a man walks in integrity and justice,/ happy are his children after him! (Prv 20:7)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray to the source of wisdom:

R/Lord Jesus Christ, light the way!

– keep them faithful in their discipleship and exemplary in their leadership. R/

For all teachers and catechists:

– possess them with love for your Word and your people. R/

For all who compose materials for religious education and formation:

– illumine them with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and the love of truth. R/

For all young people:

– guide them to follow in your footsteps with enthusiasm and love. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May our faith rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God! Amen. (cf. 1 Cor 2:5)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon of the Divine Office

My soul magnifies the Lord,

for God has regarded my humility.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows for the souls in purgatory

0

Ask the Sorrowful Mother to intercede for the souls of the faithful departed.

It is a Catholic belief that the souls in purgatory can receive our help through the prayers we offer on their behalf. These prayers can assist them in their final journey to Heaven, shortening the time they spend in a state of purification.

How can we help the souls in purgatory?

Through a mysterious connection, we can also call upon the saints to pray for those same souls in purgatory. Here is a prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows, the saint closest to the Heart of Jesus, whose prayers are powerful and effective.

O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, my Mother, I turn to you in supplication and by that sword which pierced your sorrowful heart at beholding your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, suffer on the cross, I pray and ask thee to help the holy souls in Purgatory and particularly those for whom I now pray N.N. O Mother of Sorrows, Queen of Martyrs, for the love of your Divine Son whose Precious Blood was shed for us, help us who are in danger not only of falling into Purgatory, but of losing our souls for ever in hell, with your powerful intercession. O Mary our Mother, Mother of Grace, Mother of Mercy, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. O Eternal Father through the most Precious Blood of Jesus and through the Sorrows of Mary have pity upon the holy souls in purgatory. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4)

Saint Charles Borromeo

Prayer for the Morning

Come, let us praise the Lord our God,

as we recall Saint Charles!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

God’s perfect law revives the human soul,

His faithful precepts make the simple wise;

His firm decrees bring joy to troubled hearts,

His clear commands give light to darkened eyes.

To be desired far more than treasured gold;

More sweet than honey are the words of God:

And by their truth am I, your servant, warned;

To keep them is to find a great reward.

So keep me free from every open sin;

Against all secret failings be my guard:

My words and thoughts be such as make you glad,

My Rock, my strong Redeemer, and my Lord.

PSALM 15

The righteous must still do right, and the holy still be holy. (Rv 22:11)

As both a civil and a canon lawyer, as well as a bishop, Saint Charles understood the pastoral work of law-giving according to the model of Christ. His unflagging efforts to promote Christian life and Church reform were prompted by a profoundly self-sacrificing love of Christ living in the Church.

Lord, who shall be admitted to your tent

and dwell on your holy mountain?

He who walks without fault;

he who acts with justice

and speaks the truth from his heart;

he who does not slander with his tongue;

he who does no wrong to his brother,

who casts no slur on his neighbor,

who holds the godless in disdain,

but honors those who fear the Lord;

he who keeps his pledge, come what may;

who takes no interest on a loan

and accepts no bribes against the innocent.

Such a man will stand firm for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Deuteronomy 4:5-8)

Therefore, I teach you the statutes and decrees as the Lord, my God, has commanded me, that you may observe them in the land you are entering to occupy. Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.” For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him? Or what great nation has statutes and decrees that are as just as this whole law which I am setting before you today?

Zeal for your house consumed him. (cf. Ps 69:10)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. (Rom 12:11)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Through the intercession of Saint Charles, let us pray for the Church to which he devoted his life:

R/Renew us in your love!

For all pastors and Church administrators:

– grant them the gifts of discernment and charity in all their decisions. R/

For all canon lawyers:

– grant them the wisdom to put the law at the service of true Gospel life. R/

For all parishes:

– grant them a fervent life of prayer and good works for the sake of your Kingdom. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God of justice and of mercy, you guided Saint Charles Borromeo in promoting the full Gospel life of the Church in times of uncertainty and controversy. Through his intercession, continue to renew the Church today to seek the peace of your Kingdom for all people, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to entrust the United States to God’s protection

0

The prayer asks God to protect the United States and “touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders.”

God looks tenderly upon us, as he allows us to freely choose our political leaders. He does not interrupt our political process, but gently inspires each one of us to make decisions according to our conscience.Here is a prayer from the Archdiocese of Boston that asks God to shower his graces upon all those within the United States, especially those leaders that are elected, penetrating their hearts and leading them to fulfill his most holy will.

God our Father, giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for your glory and dwell among your people.

Send your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing your will.

Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.” Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3)

Prayer for the Evening

Let our prayer arise before God like incense,

the raising of our hands in prayer

like the evening sacrifice!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

As the darkness draweth nigh,

Daylight fadeth from the sky:

Father, unto thee we call,

Thou who rulest over all.

Light that cannot know decline,

Come within our souls to shine!

All our hearts to thee are known;

Come, possess them as thine own.

Thou alone these hearts can fill,

And their deepest yearning still.

Love that never groweth old,

In thy love our lives enfold!

May the virtue of our lives

Unto thee as incense rise,

When each joy and pain shall be

Joined with Paschal Mystery.

May our gift to thee arise

As an evening sacrifice.

PSALM 141:1-5a, 8

May the spoken words of my mouth,/ the thoughts of my heart,/ win favor in your sight, O Lord. (Ps 19:15)

We can use our treasured capacity for speech to offer prayer, as fragrant as incense before God, or to offer hurt to another.

I have called to you, Lord; hasten to help me!

Hear my voice when I cry to you.

Let my prayer arise before you like incense,

the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.

Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth;

keep watch at the door of my lips!

Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong,

to evil deeds with men who are sinners.

Never allow me to share in their feasting.

If a good man strikes or reproves me it is kindness;

but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.

To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned:

in you I take refuge; spare my soul!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Revelation 8:3-4)

Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.

Each of the elders held a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the holy ones.

(Rv 5:8)

You receive all our offerings in love:

– may we offer them more and more faithfully in

love. R/

You have promised us the gift of your Holy Spirit:

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3)

Saint Martin de Porres

Prayer for the Morning

Glorious is God’s name over all the earth:

come, let us sing praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Love divine, all loves excelling,

Joy of heaven to earth come down;

Fix in us thy humble dwelling;

All thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, thou art all compassion,

Pure unbounded love thou art;

Visit us with thy salvation;

Enter every trembling heart.

Finish, then, thy new creation;

Pure and spotless let us be.

Let us see thy great salvation

Perfectly restored in thee;

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

PSALM 8

Unless you become like little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of God. (cf. Mt 18:3)

Only the childlike retain the child’s gift of wonder. Wondering, we forget ourselves entirely, lost in what has provoked our awe. Wonder is the wellspring of praise. We have reason for our praise: we are God’s children, made in his image.

How great is your name, O Lord our God,

through all the earth!

Your majesty is praised above the heavens;

on the lips of children and of babes

you have found praise to foil your enemy,

to silence the foe and the rebel.

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,

the moon and the stars which you arranged,

what is man that you should keep him in mind,

mortal man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him little less than a god;

with glory and honor you crowned him,

gave him power over the works of your hand,

put all things under his feet.

All of them, sheep and cattle,

yes, even the savage beasts,

birds of the air, and fish

that make their way through the waters.

How great is your name, O Lord our God,

through all the earth!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Genesis 1:27-28, 31a)

God created man in his image;/ in the divine image he created him;/ male and female he created them.

God blessed them, saying to them: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth.” God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good.

What are we that you should care for us?

(cf. Ps 8:5)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

To which of the angels did God ever say:/ “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”? (Heb 1:5)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us praise the God whose mystery fills the universe with wonder:

R/We praise and exalt you above all for ever!

Blessed are you, O Lord our God; you created all things and pronounced them good:

– fill us with reverence for the works of your hands. R/

Blessed is your holy and glorious name; you created male and female in your image:

– fill us with reverence for our brothers and sisters. R/

Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven; you reign over all creation:

– fill us with reverence for you, who alone are God. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, you are over all, in all, beyond all. Open our eyes to see the wonders that surround us; open our hearts to know the wonders of our brothers and sisters; open our lips to sing your praise. Restore all peoples in your image, who is our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us exult and rejoice in the Lord

all the days of our life!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Father of Jesus Christ, my Lord,

My Savior and my Head;

I trust in you, whose powerful Word

Has raised him from the dead.

To you the glory of your power

And faithfulness I give;

I shall in Christ, at that glad hour,

And Christ in me shall live.

PSALM 90:1-6, 14-15

Make us know the shortness of our life/ that we may gain wisdom of heart. (Ps 90:12)

All humanity is bound together by the common mortality in which Christ Jesus came to share. With us he died, so that in him we might rise to everlasting life. Let us learn from those who have gone before us how to live well so that we may die well, and let us accompany them on their journey with our love and prayer.

O Lord, you have been our refuge

from one generation to the next.

Before the mountains were born

or the earth or the world brought forth,

you are God, without beginning or end.

You turn men back to dust

and say: “Go back, sons of men.”

To your eyes a thousand years

are like yesterday, come and gone,

no more than a watch in the night.

You sweep men away like a dream,

like grass which springs up in the morning.

In the morning it springs up and flowers:

by evening it withers and fades.

In the morning, fill us with your love;

we shall exult and rejoice all our days.

Give us joy to balance our affliction

for the years when we knew misfortune.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (John 6:39-40)

“This is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it [on] the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day.”

I am the resurrection and the life;

whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live. (Jn 11:25)

CANTICLE OF MARY

If we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection. (Rom 6:5)

INTERCESSIONS

Through Christ, who became like us in all things but sin, let us pray for those who have died:

R/Give them joy, O Lord!

You were born into the world of death so that you might bring abundant life:

– raise to new life all those who have died in poverty and pain. R/

You took on our flesh, subject to death, so that we might take on new life in you:

– raise to new life those who have died in illness, violence, and deprivation. R/

You died on the cross, that we might rise from the grave:

– raise to new life those who have been tortured, murdered, or executed. R/

Your Mother endured the sorrow of your death, that we might know the gladness of your rising:

– raise up all those who are bowed down under the sorrow of bereavement. R/

This Lent I have been remembering my death more often because of an addition I made to my spiritual repertoire. I decided to add the recitation of the 15 Prayers of St. Bridget, commonly found in the Pieta prayer book but also published by Tan Books.Over the course of my life, I’ve prayed the Prayers every now and again but with no regularity. As I pray them during these 40 days of Lent, they’ve moved me in a new way, as I have been attentive to the graces I’m praying for, many of them dealing with the hour of my death.

Here are a few #mementomori snippets from the Prayers:

First Prayer: Grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins.

Fifth Prayer: I beg of You, O Sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death, You will show me mercy, too.

Sixth prayer: Assist me in all my trials, and especially at the hour of my death.

Eighth Prayer: Grant us the grace to receive worthily Your precious body and blood during our life and at the hour of our death, that they may serve as a remedy and consolation for our souls.

Ninth Prayer: I beg of You, O my Savior, not to abandon me in the terrors and pains of my death.

Thirteenth Prayer: I beg of You, Lord Jesus, to have mercy on me and at the hour of my death when my mind will be greatly troubled and my soul will be in anguish.

Fourteenth Prayer: I beg of You at the hour of my death to receive me, a pilgrim and an exile returning to You.

Fifteenth Prayer: I beg of You, O Sweet Jesus, to receive my soul when I am in my death agony.

Conclusion: May the end of my life be so praiseworthy that I may merit Heaven and there, with Your saints, praise You forever.

I have found the Prayers of St. Bridget to be quite beautiful because they help me to meditate on Christ’s Passion, His wounds, and His death.

Some people might pray the prayers for the wrong reasons, because of the so-called promises associated with them. In 1954, the Vatican issued a statement barring the publication of the promises attached to the prayers due to questions regarding their authenticity. I’m not praying the prayers for the promises, but instead for the wonderful graces we ask God for each in each prayer. The #MementoMori graces are only a handful of the many requests we make of God through these prayers.

Are you looking for an additional Lenten meditation in the final weeks of Lent? Look no further than the Prayers of St Bridget. They will open your eyes to Christ’s suffering and open your heart to the many graces God will give, especially the #MementoMori graces.

Prayer on the anniversary of a loved one’s death

0

Solemnly remember the death of a friend or loved one with this hopeful prayer.

Honoring a loved one on their anniversary of their death can be a painful memory. We miss their presence with us, and try to go on with life without them.However, in the eyes of faith, it can be a day where we pray for them, thinking of the peace and joy they may be experiencing in Heaven.

Here is a prayer adapted from the liturgy can be said each year on the day a person departed from this life to the next.

O Lord, God of mercy, grant unto the souls of your servants, on the anniversary of whose death we are keeping, a place of solace, of peaceful reset and of glorious light.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed; All Souls Day (MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2)

The meaning of the celebration

+ On this day the Church remembers all those women and men who have gone before us, marked with the sign of faith, and prays that the Lord in his mercy will welcome them into the Kingdom of Heaven.

+ The various readings from Scripture that can be used for this celebration remind us that God’s power is stronger than death and that nothing is greater than the gift of eternal life God promises us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

+ As we honor those who have gone before us, we commend them to God’s mercy and love.

For prayer and reflection

“The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.”—Matthew 13:43

Spiritual bonus

It was the Benedictine abbot Saint Odilo of Cluny who, in 998, ordered that this feast be celebrated in all the monasteries associated with the great abbey of Cluny. The celebration was later adopted by other religious communities and dioceses. On this day, clergy and religious pray the Office of the Dead (unless the celebration falls on a Sunday) and priests are given special permission to celebrate three Masses on this day: for the souls in Purgatory, for the intentions of the Pope, and for the priest’s own intentions. The liturgical colors allowed on this day are white, violent, and black.

Prayer

Listen kindly to our prayers, O Lord,

and, as our faith in your Son,

raised from the dead, is deepened,

so may our hope of resurrection for your departed servants

also find new strength.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
