PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23)

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord is rich in kindness:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,

Like the wideness of the sea;

There’s a kindness in his justice,

Which is more than liberty.

There is plentiful redemption

In the blood that has been shed;

There is joy for all the members

In the sorrows of the Head.

PSALM 86:1-10

The Lord is slow to anger and rich in kindness, forgiving wickedness and crime. (Nm 14:18)

So wide is God’s mercy that no sin is too great or too small for forgiveness. So much narrower is our charity that we often find the small annoyances the hardest to forgive. The more often we turn in prayer to the all-forgiving God, the more we will become like him in extending the hand of pardon to others in every daily circumstance.

Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer

for I am poor and needy.

Preserve my life, for I am faithful:

save the servant who trusts in you.

You are my God, have mercy on me, Lord,

for I cry to you all the day long.

Give joy to your servant, O Lord,

for to you I lift up my soul.

O Lord, you are good and forgiving,

full of love to all who call.

Give heed, O Lord, to my prayer

and attend to the sound of my voice.

In the day of distress I will call

and surely you will reply.

Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord;

nor work to compare with yours.

All the nations shall come to adore you

and glorify your name, O Lord:

for you are great and do marvelous deeds,

you who alone are God.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Exodus 34:6-7a)

Thus the Lord passed before [Moses] and cried out, “The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity, continuing his kindness for a thousand generations, and forgiving wickedness and crime and sin.”

Great and awesome are you in your love, O Lord!

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Be merciful, just as [also] your Father is merciful. (Lk 6:36)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Believing in the love God has for us, we pray:

R/Lord, have mercy.

You are faithful in your forgiveness:

– strengthen in trust all who fear to approach you in the Sacrament of Penance. R/

You are gracious to all who come to you:

– make gracious all who represent you in the presence of sin and suffering. R/

You are merciful to all who turn to you for help:

– enlighten in wisdom all who have the opportunity to encourage others in prayer. R/

You forgive every human failing:

– preserve us from the temptation to trap others in their sins by passing on small-minded gossip. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, you have made us in your image. As you forgive, may we forgive; as you restore, may we restore; as you love, may we love, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

O Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Queen of Heaven and Earth,

and tender Mother of men,

in accordance with Thy ardent wish made known at Fatima,

I consecrate to Thy Immaculate Heart myself,

my brethren,

my country and the whole human race.

Reign over us,

Most Holy Mother of God,

and teach us how to make the Heart of Thy Son,

Our Lord Jesus Christ reign

and triumph in us even as It has reigned

and triumphed in Thee.

Reign over us,

Most Blessed Virgin,

that we may be Thine in prosperity

and in adversity,

in joy and in sorrow,

in health and in sickness,

in life and in death.

O most compassionate Heart of Mary,

Queen of Heaven,

watch over our minds and hearts

and preserve them from the impurity

which Thou didst lament so sorrowfully at Fatima.

Assist us in imitating You in all things,

especially purity.

Help us to call down upon our country

and upon the whole world the peace of God

in justice and charity.

Therefore, Most Gracious Virgin and Mother,

I hereby promise to imitate Thy virtues

by the practice of a true Christian life

without regard to human respect.

I resolve to receive Holy Communion regularly

and to offer to Thee five decades of the Rosary each day,

together with my sacrifices,

in the spirit of reparation and penance.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22)

Saint John Paul II

Prayer for the Morning

Christ is our light: come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O sister dawn, how light your touch;

How bright your face upon the earth!

Awakened are we all to life

As you call us from sleep’s small death.

You, sister, graced that Easter morn,

When Life, entombed, was lost from sight.

You roused the women with their spice

And guided them to greet the Light!

Your dawning opens wide our eyes;

Our talents are awakened, too!

Our hands, so grasping, rest has freed

To welcome gifts we never knew.

With dawn and all the gifts of day,

We praise you, Abba, Breath and Word:

A world so prodigal and free

Reveals your loving hand, O God!

PSALM 19:2-7

For you who fear my name, there will arise/ the sun of justice with its healing rays. (Mal 3:20)

Saint John Paul II liked to quote Saint Augustine: “We are an Easter people and Alleluia is our song!” Through years of painful unity with Christ’s cross, he focused always on the Resurrection. Just as every Sunday is a little Easter, so is every single sunrise a reminder of God’s glorious victory over sin and death.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God

and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands.

Day unto day takes up the story

and night unto night makes known the message.

No speech, no word, no voice is heard

yet their span extends through all the earth,

their words to the utmost bounds of the world.

There he has placed a tent for the sun;

it comes forth like a bridegroom coming from his tent,

rejoices like a champion to run its course.

At the end of the sky is the rising of the sun;

to the furthest end of the sky is its course.

There is nothing concealed from its burning heat.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Malachi 1:11)

From the rising of the sun, even to its setting,/ my name is great among the nations;/ And everywhere they bring sacrifice to my name,/ and a pure offering;/ For great is my name among the nations,/ says the Lord of hosts.

Those in the west shall fear the name of the Lord,/

and those in the east, his glory. (Is 59:19a)

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE…SAINT OF THE DAY: St. URSULA AND COMPANIONS (WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21)

Martyrs

Their story

+ According to legend, Ursula was the daughter of a Christian king of Britain.

+ Traveling to the continent with eleven companions, these holy virgins were said to have been tortured to death for refusing to denounce their faith.

+ The relics of Saint Ursula, and those of her companions, are claimed by the Cathedral of Cologne.

+ Devotion to these virgin-martyrs endured for centuries. Saint Ursula was chosen by Saint Angela Merici to be the patroness of the religious community she founded in 1535.

+ These martyrs are honored as the patrons of the British Virgin Island and, because of the efforts of Saint Angela Merici, Saint Ursula is honored as a patron saint of teachers and of students.

+ Saint Odilia, one of Ursula’s companions, is honored as the principle patroness of the Crosier Fathers and Brothers.

+ While their celebration was left to local observance in the reforms of the General Roman Calendar of 1969, the memory of Saint Ursula and her companions and her companions was retained in the Roman Martyrology (the Church’s official listing of saints).

For prayer and reflection

“Then one of the elders spoke up and said to me,

‘Who are these wearing white robes,

and where did they come from?…

These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress;

they have washed their robes

and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.”—Revelation 7:13 and 14b

Prayer

O God, you gave to the virgins consecrated to you under the leadership of Ursula, the courage of their wonderful combat, so that by the victory of martyrdom they arrived at the glory of the Beatific Vision; grant, we beseech you, that we may be helped by those whom you have enabled on this day to pass form mortal combat to triumph in heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

If you suffer from anxiety, you need to know the most repeated advice in the Bible

It comes at us 365 times. God really, really wants us to be at peace.

Many people probably think the most common phrase in the Bible has something to do with “don’t” or “thou shalt not” or maybe “love one another.”Actually the most repeated advice throughout the Old and the New Testaments is, “Do not be afraid!”

You might already be familiar with a few Scripture verses where this loving exhortation is made: When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, for example, announcing that she would be the Mother of Our Savior. Or when Joseph heard these words upon learning that he was to be the earthly father of Jesus: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:20)

As Jesus was about to be born in Bethlehem, another angel appeared to the three kings (the wise men) with the same encouraging words.

When Zechariah was told that his wife would conceive a child in her old age, “he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. / But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.” (Luke 1:12-13)

In fact, there are many, many times beyond these Christmas verses when the Bible encourages us to not be afraid.

At the Transfiguration of Jesus, the disciples  fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. / But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.”  (Matthew 17:6-7)

All together some form of Do not be afraid is repeated 365 times throughout Scripture!

So many of our daily worries big and small revolve around some kind of fear of what will happen. Anxiety consumes much of our energy: Will he be okay on that trip? Will she have a car accident? Can I ever forgive my sibling? Am I doing what God wants of me in this situation? What will the medical testing tell us? Will his addiction get worse? Am I making the right decision? Will I really see my loved ones in heaven? Endless questions swirl in our heads, and to each God reminds us to turn to Him in prayer and trust.

In Revelation 2:10, we’re encouraged, “Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Beware, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have affliction. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

In Deutoronomy 31:6 we’re encouraged to put our trust in God, that He will not abandon us when we put Him first in our life: “Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the LORD your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.”

In Psalm 27:1, we’re reminded that no earthly disappointment can destroy us: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

In Jeremiah 1:8, we read, “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.”

In Matthew 10:28,  we read, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Luke 12:7  tells us, “But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

In John 6:20, we read that when the disciples saw Jesus walking toward them on the water, He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”

St. John Paul II began his papacy with the crucial reminder, “Be not afraid!” This saint of our times constantly urged us to accept the peace Christ offers us, and to trust always in His love and mercy.

Act of Consecration to the Holy Spirit

On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly
witnesses, I offer myself soul and body to Thee,
Eternal Spirit of God.

I adore the brightness of Thy purity,
the unerring keenness of Thy justice,
and the might of Thy love.

Thou art the Strength and Light of my soul.
In Thee I live and move and am.

I desire never to grieve Thee by unfaithfulness to grace,
and I pray with all my heart to be kept
from the smallest sin against Thee.

Mercifully guard my every thought
and grant that I may always watch for Thy light
and listen to Thy voice
and follow Thy gracious inspirations.

I cling to Thee and give myself to Thee
and ask Thee by Thy compassion
to watch over me in my weakness.

Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus
and looking at His Five Wounds
and trusting in His Precious Blood
and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart,

I implore Thee Adorable Spirit,
helper of my infirmity,
so to keep me in Thy grace
that I may never sin against Thee.

Give me grace O Holy Ghost,
Spirit of the Father and the Son,
to say to Thee always and everywhere,
“Speak Lord, for Thy servant heareth.”

Amen.

Prayer for peace during civil unrest

0

Ask God to bring peace to countries that are divided, where citizens are turning against each other.

Tension can be difficult to handle, especially when it occurs in your own neighborhood. Everyone suddenly picks a side and begins hurling insults, and in the worst situations, becomes violent against one another. This is not the world that God had intended. Our God desires peace in the world, united under his banner of love and mercy.

For those times when we are in the middle of civil unrest, here is a prayer from the Raccolta that implores God to bring his peace into our hearts and the world.

Ant. Give peace, O Lord, in our days; for there is none other to fight for us, but only you, our God.

V. Let peace be in your strength, O Lord,
R. And plenty in your strong places.

Let us pray

O God, from whom proceed all holy desires, all right counsels and just works; grant unto us your servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be devoted to your commands, and that, being delivered from fear, we may pass our time in peace under your protection. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Pray this “emergency prayer” when faced with a temptation

If you are tempted to sin, say the following short prayer to call upon God’s speedy help.

We all struggle with various sins on a daily basis, but on certain days we may experience an especially strong temptation. This could be a temptation to look at pornography, lash out in anger, or make a decision that would have a number of disastrous effects.Whatever it is, if we are able to recognize the temptation before its too late, we need to cry out to God and ask for his help.

Here is a short prayer from The Catholic prayer book and manual of meditations that can be easily memorized and prayed as an “emergency prayer.”

Jesus and Mary, help me!

A Prayer to the Holy Guardian Angels

Heavenly Father, Your infinite love for us has chosen a blessed angel in heaven and appointed him our guide during this earthly pilgrimage.

Accept our thanks for so great a blessing.

Grant that we may experience the assistance of our holy protector in all our necessities.

And you, holy, loving angel and guide, watch over us with all the tenderness of your angelic heart.

Keep us always on the way that leads to heaven, and cease not to pray for us until we have attained our final destiny, eternal salvation.

Then we shall love You for all eternity.

We shall praise and glorify You unceasingly for all the good You have done for us while here on earth.

Especially be a faithful and watchful protector of our children.

Take our place, and supply what may be wanting to us through human frailty, short-sightedness, or sinful neglect.

Lighten, O you perfect servants of God, our heavy task.

Guide our children, that they may become like unto Jesus, may imitate Him faithfully, and persevere till they attain eternal life.

Amen.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… SAINT OF THE DAY: ST PAUL OF THE CROSS(TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20)

Founder of the Passionists (1694-1775)

His life

+ Paul Francis Danei was born near Genoa to a family of merchants. A pious child, he experienced a series of visions in 1720 in which he was instructed to establish a new religious congregation.

+ After spending 40 days in solitary prayer, he composed a rule of life for what would eventually become the Congregation of the Passion (the Passionists).

+ Ordained a priest in 1727, Paul established the community’s first house in 1737.

+ After the community was given papal approval in 1769, Paul added a fourth vow to promote the Passion of Christ. Passionist priests were soon sought out as retreat leaders and missionaries throughout Italy and beyond.

+ A man of prayer, Paul spent long hours in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and practiced extreme penances. He wanted the members of his community to combine contemplation and action and his own devotion to the Passion compelled him to share the Truth of God’s love with others.

+ Shortly before his death on October 19, 1775, he established a congregation of enclosed nuns.

+ Saint Paul of the Cross was canonized in 1867.

For prayer and reflection

“It is very good and holy to consider the passion of our Lord and to meditate on it, for by this sacred path we reach union with God. In this most holy school we learn true wisdom, for it was there that all the saints learned it.”—Saint Paul of the Cross.

Prayer

May the Priest Saint Paul,

whose only love was the Cross,

obtain for us your grace, O Lord,

so that, urged on more strongly by his example,

we may each embrace our own cross with courage.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.
