Prayer for the Marian Year (1987-1988)

by Pope Saint John Paul II

Mother of the Redeemer, in this year dedicated to you, with great joy we call you blessed. In order to carry out His providential plan of salvation, God the Father chose you before the creation of the world. You believed in His love and obeyed His word. The Son of God desired you for His Mother when He became man to save the human race. You received Him with ready obedience and undivided heart. The Holy Spirit loved you as His mystical spouse and He filled you with singular gifts. You allowed yourself to be led by His hidden and powerful action.

On the eve of the third Christian Millennium, we entrust to you the Church which acknowledges you and invokes you as Mother. On earth you preceded the Church in the pilgrimage of faith: comfort her in her difficulties and trials, and make her always the sign and instrument of intimate union with God and of the unity of the whole human race.

To you, Mother of Christians, we entrust in a special way the peoples who are celebrating, during this Marian Year, the sixth Centenary or the Millennium of their acceptance of the Gospel. Their long history is profoundly marked by devotion to you. Turn towards them your loving glance; give strength to those who are suffering for the faith.

To you, Mother of the human family and of the nations, we confidently entrust the whole of humanity, with its hopes and fears. Do not let it lack the light of true wisdom. Guide it to seek freedom and justice for all. Direct its steps in the ways of peace. Enable all to meet Christ, the way and the truth and the life. Sustain us, O Virgin Mary, on our journey of faith and obtain for us the grace of eternal salvation. O clement, O loving, O sweet Mother of God and our Mother, Mary! Amen.

Prayer for the Missions

O God, who would have all His children to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, send forth, we beseech you, laborers into your harvest and grant them with all confidence to preach the Word; that everywhere your Gospel may be heard and glorified, and that all nations may know you, the one True God, and Him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Queen of the Apostles, and all you angels and saints of God, pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into the harvest and to spare His people, that we may all rejoice with Him and the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

Lead: Let us pray for Pope (name).Response: May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth, and may the Lord not hand him over to the power of his enemies.

Lead: May your hand be upon your holy servant.Response: And upon your son whom you have anointed.

Let us pray. O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful, look down, in your mercy, upon your servant, (name), whom you have appointed to preside over your Church; and grant, we beseech you, that both by word and example, he may edify all those under his charge; so that, with the flock entrusted to him, he may arrive at length unto life everlasting. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Sanctification of the Clergy

Divine Savior, Jesus Christ, who has entrusted the whole work of your redemption, the welfare and salvation of the world, to priests as your representatives, I offer you through the hands of your most Holy Mother Mary, this present day, whole and entire, with all its prayers, works, and sacrifices, its joys and sorrows, for the sanctification of your priests, and for all those preparing for the priesthood. Give us truly holy priests, inflamed with the fire of your divine love, who seek nothing but your greater glory, and the salvation of souls. And you, Mary, good Mother of priests, protect all priests from dangers to their holy vocation, and with the loving hand of a mother, lead back to the Good Shepherd those unfortunate priests who, unfaithful to their exalted vocation, have gone astray. Amen.

Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

0

by Saint Bonaventure (1217-1274)

Lord Jesus, as God’s Spirit came down and rested upon you, may the same Spirit rest upon us, bestowing his sevenfold gifts. First, grant us the gift of understanding, by which your precepts may enlighten our minds. Second, grant us counsel, by which we may follow in your footsteps on the path of righteousness. Third, grant us courage, by which we may ward off the Enemy’s attacks. Fourth, grant us knowledge, by which we can distinguish good from evil. Fifth, grant us piety, by which we may acquire compassionate hearts. Sixth, grant us fear, by which we may draw back from evil and submit to what is good. Seventh, grant us wisdom, that we may taste fully the life-giving sweetness of your love. Amen.

Prayer for Those We Love

0

by Saint Ambrose of Milan (339-397)

Lord God, we can hope for others nothing better than the happiness we desire for ourselves. Therefore, I pray you, do not separate me after death from those I tenderly loved on earth. Grant that where I am they may be with me, and that I may enjoy their presence in heaven after being so often deprived of it on earth. Lord God, I ask you to receive your beloved children immediately into your life-giving heart. After this brief life on earth, give them eternal happiness. Amen.

Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood

0

Lord Jesus Christ, Shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your holy Church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign: to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the hearts of our people the fire of zeal for souls. Make them eager to spread your Kingdom upon earth. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth, and the Life; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer From the Imitation of Christ

0

by Thomas a Kempis (1379-1471)

O Almighty God, let your grace assist us, that we who have undertaken the office of Priesthood, may be able to wait upon you worthily and devoutly, in all purity, and with a good conscience. And if we cannot live in so great innocence of life as we ought to do, grant to us, at the least, worthily to lament the sins that we have committed; and in the spirit of humility, and with the full purpose of a good will, to serve you more earnestly for the time to come. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer From the Imitation of Christ 2

0

by Thomas a Kempis (1379-1471)

O Lord God, holy Father, be you now and forever blessed. For as you will, so it has been done; and what you do is good. Let your servant rejoice in you, not in myself or in any other. You alone are my true joy. You are my hope and my crown. You are my gladness and my honor. O Lord, what has your servant but what has been received from you without deserving it? Yours are all things that you have given and have made. Amen.

Prayer of Commendation

0

by Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626)

I commend to you, O Lord, my soul and my body, my mind and my thoughts, my prayers and my vows, my senses and my members, my words and my works, my life and my death; my brothers, my sisters, and their children; my friends, my benefactors, my well-wishers, those who have claim on me, my kindred, my neighbors, my country, and all Christian people. Amen.
