Mother Teresa prayed this inspirational prayer on a daily basis

The prayer sums up her spirituality and desire to spread Jesus’ love everywhere she went.

St. Teresa of Calcutta, one of the greatest saints of modern times, was an inspiration around the world, to both religious and non-religious people alike. Above all, Mother Teresa practiced what she preached, and her actions continue to remind us of the power of Christian charity.Below is a prayer that Mother Teresa prayed on a daily basis; it was one of her favorite prayers and is attributed to Blessed John Henry Newman. The prayer is a perfect summary of her own spirituality and expresses her desire to spread Christ’s love everywhere she went.

Dear Jesus, help me to spread Thy fragrance everywhere I go.

Flood my soul with Thy spirit and love.

Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Thine.

Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Thy presence in my soul.

Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus.

Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others.

Amen.

Saint of the Day: St. Faith (TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6)

Patroness of Santa Fe. Virgin and Martyr (d. ca. 300)

Her life

+ Faith is said to have been a child in Agen in southwestern France.

+ The various legends associated with life recount that she was arrested and tortured during one the persecutions of Christians by the Roman Empire.

+ Although we know nothing of this saint for certain—aside from her name and the fact that she was a martyr—she is included several early lists of saints and devotion to her seems to have been quite widespread.

+ The main shrine of Saint Faith was the Abbey of Saint-Foy in Conques, France, and her relics are still enshrined there today.

+ The city and archdiocese of Santa Fe, New Mexico, are named for Saint Faith.

For prayer and reflection

“The Lamb who is at the center of the throne will lead them to the springs of the waters of life.”—Revelation 7:17

Spiritual bonus

On this day, we also remember Saint Bruno, the founder of the Carthusian Order, and Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, the founder of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

Prayer

O God, who gladden us today

with the annual commemoration of blessed Faith,

graciously grant that we may be helped by her merits,

just as our lives are lit up by the splendor

of her example of chastity and fortitude.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6)

Prayer for the Morning

In the morning you hear us, O Lord;/

in the morning we offer you our prayer!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Heedless soul of mine, bethink thee

Ere thine hours on earth are past—

Ere thou fly to spirit-regions,

If thou reàl treasure hast.

Where will be thine endless dwelling?

Where thine everlasting home?

What thy portion, joy or mourning,

In the world beyond the tomb?

When these eyes shall lose their luster—

Fading with the failing breath,

And roll, lightless, in the conflict,

With inexorable death;

How wilt thou survive the anguish—

How sustain all earthly loss,

If thou know not the Redeemer,

If thou cling not to his cross?

PSLAM 90:1-6, 14-15

Make us know the shortness of our life/ that we may gain wisdom of heart. (Ps 90:12)

A human life may sometimes look too short to be worth much, but God, who sees the works of his hands from the perspective of enduring love, clothes even the passing wildflowers with splendor. We are only dust—but beloved dust!

O Lord, you have been our refuge

from one generation to the next.

Before the mountains were born

or the earth or the world brought forth,

you are God, without beginning or end.

You turn men back to dust

and say: “Go back, sons of men.”

To your eyes a thousand years

are like yesterday, come and gone,

no more than a watch in the night.

You sweep men away like a dream,

like grass which springs up in the morning.

In the morning it springs up and flowers:

by evening it withers and fades.

In the morning, fill us with your love;

we shall exult and rejoice all our days.

Give us joy to balance our affliction

for the years when we knew misfortune.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Ephesians 2:4-10)

God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved), raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

You are precious in my eyes. (Is 43:4)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being. (Gn 2:7)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

The Lord Jesus Christ took on our fragile flesh and made of it a temple for the living God. With joyful confidence, let us pray:

R/Let your favor be upon us, O Lord.

O God, we are the works of your hands:

– shape us in the image of Christ our Lord. R/

O God, we are but a moment in the world’s history:

– teach us to store up treasure in heaven by the good we do on earth. R/

O God, we fear the mortality we cannot cure:

– grant insight and faith to all those who do the work of medical research. R/

O God, we are saddened by the deaths of those we love:

– bring them into the everlasting joy of your presence. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God of wisdom and of love, you have made us as fragile as the flowers of the field, yet you have made us strong in the hope of life everlasting. Teach us to see this day as gift enough, that we may live it for your glory and render it back to you in praise when evening falls, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Pray this Psalm for peace of mind and soul

0

If you are feeling anxious or fearful, pray this Psalm to put yourself under God’s protection.

Often when we are experiencing anxiety or fear, we need something outside of ourselves to encourage us and bring peace back into our soul. One of the best ways to do this is by praying particular Psalms. The Psalms are pieces of poetry, inspired by God, but written from the heart of someone struggling with many of the same feelings. They show us how a person can be in the depths of despair, but still trust in God’s divine providence.
One particular Psalm that can bring peace back into the mind and soul is Psalm 91. It is a Psalm that focuses on God’s never failing protection and how even when everything around you falls to ruin, God will be at your side.

Below are a few excerpts from this beautiful Psalm.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High,

who abides in the shadow of the Almighty,

will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;

my God, in whom I trust.”

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler

and from the deadly pestilence;

he will cover you with his pinions,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

You will not fear the terror of the night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,

nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

Because he cleaves to me in love, I will deliver him;

I will protect him, because he knows my name.

When he calls to me, I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble,

I will rescue him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him,

and show him my salvation.

Think of prayer as keeping Jesus company as a beloved friend

If Jesus is our “best friend,” shouldn’t we spend time with him?

Prayer can sometimes feel dry and quickly turn into a bland routine that consists of reciting words in order to get something from God. Instead of viewing prayer as a way to acquire blessings from God, try looking at it as a way to develop your relationship with God.Brother Lawrence, a Carmelite monk of the 17th century, explains in one of his letters an alternative view of prayer.

[R]emember what I have recommended to you, which is, to think often on God, by day, by night, in your business, and even in your diversions. He is always near you and with you; leave Him not alone. You would think it rude to leave a friend alone, who came to visit you: why then must God be neglected? Do not then forget Him, but think on Him often, adore Him continually, live and die with Him; this is the glorious employment of a Christian; in a word, this is our profession, if we do not know it we must learn it.

This picture of prayer is consistent with Jesus’ experience in the garden, “When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, ‘So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?’” (Matthew 26:40)

In a similar way, God asks us each day to spend time with him. Wouldn’t we want to spend time with him if he is our best friend?

Let’s resolve to spend more time with God and to think of him often, even when we are doing the most mundane activities.

God is always there, waiting for us to turn toward him.

DAILY MEDITATION WITH PRAYER (MONDAY, OCTOBER 5)

MEDITATION OF THE DAY

The One Who Treats Us with Mercy

O inexhaustible treasure of purity of intention which makes all our actions perfect and so pleasing to God! O Jesus, you know how weak I am; be then ever with me; guide my actions and my whole being, you who are my very best Teacher! Truly, Jesus, I become frightened when I look at my own misery, but at the same time I am reassured by your unfathomable mercy, which exceeds my misery by the measure of all eternity. This disposition of soul clothes me in your power. O joy that flows from the knowledge of one’s self! O unchanging Truth, your constancy is everlasting….

O Jesus, eternal Truth, strengthen my feeble forces; you can do all things, Lord. I know that without you all my efforts are in vain. O Jesus, do not hide from me, for I cannot live without you. Listen to the cry of my soul. Your mercy has not been exhausted, Lord, so have pity on my misery. Your mercy surpasses the understanding of all angels and people put together; and so, although it seems to me that you do not hear me, I put my trust in the ocean of your mercy, and I know that my hope will not be deceived.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, OCTOBER 5)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord will not abandon his people:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

This world, my God, is held within your hand,

Though we forget your love and steadfast might

And in the changing day uncertain stand,

Disturbed by morning, and afraid of night.

From youthful confidence to careful age,

Help us each one to be your loving friend,

Rewarded by the faithful servant’s wage,

God in Three Persons, reigning without end.

PSALM 94:9-15, 22

God does not withdraw his mercy,/ nor permit even one of his promises to fail. (Sir 47:22)

Uncertainty is an ever-present reality to the Christian believer. Is God really there? Is he really interested? Can he really hear prayers? Does he really act in today’s world? Does he keep his promises even now? The Psalmist faced the same questions with a courageous “yes”!

Can he who made the ear, not hear?

Can he who formed the eye, not see?

Will he who corrects nations, not punish?

Will he who teaches men, not have knowledge?

The Lord knows the thoughts of men.

He knows they are no more than a breath.

Happy the man whom you teach, O Lord,

whom you train by means of your law:

to him you give peace in evil days

while the pit is being dug for the wicked.

The Lord will not abandon his people

nor forsake those who are his own:

for judgment shall again be just

and all true hearts shall uphold it.

As for me, the Lord will be a stronghold;

my God will be the rock where I take refuge.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 12:27-28)

Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass in the field that grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?

God is faithful and will not let you be tried

beyond your strength. (1 Cor 10:13)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call. (Acts 2:39)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With faith in God who keeps his promises, let us pray:

R/We place our trust in you!

For those who do not believe in God:

– grant them the gift of faith. R/

For those who do not believe in Jesus Christ:

– grant them the gift of faith. R/

For those who do not trust in your love or your promises:

– grant them the gift of faith. R/

Our Father….

May the word of Christ dwell in us richly, and bring us to life everlasting! Amen. (cf. Col 3:16)

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska… Saint of the Day for October 5

Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska’s Story

Saint Faustina’s name is forever linked to the annual feast of the Divine Mercy, the Divine Mercy chaplet, and the Divine Mercy prayer recited each day at 3 p.m. by many people.

Born in what is now west-central Poland, Helena Kowalska was the third of 10 children. She worked as a housekeeper in three cities before joining the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925. She worked as a cook, gardener and porter in three of their houses.

In addition to carrying out her work faithfully, generously serving the needs of the sisters and the local people, Sister Faustina also had a deep interior life. This included receiving revelations from the Lord Jesus, messages that she recorded in her diary at the request of Christ and of her confessors.

At a time when some Catholics had an image of God as such a strict judge that they might be tempted to despair about the possibility of being forgiven, Jesus chose to emphasize his mercy and forgiveness for sins acknowledged and confessed. “I do not want to punish aching mankind,” he once told Saint Faustina, “but I desire to heal it, pressing it to my merciful heart.” The two rays emanating from Christ’s heart, she said, represent the blood and water poured out after Jesus’ death.

Because Sister Maria Faustina knew that the revelations she had already received did not constitute holiness itself, she wrote in her diary: “Neither graces, nor revelations, nor raptures, nor gifts granted to a soul make it perfect, but rather the intimate union of the soul with God. These gifts are merely ornaments of the soul, but constitute neither its essence nor its perfection. My sanctity and perfection consist in the close union of my will with the will of God.”

Sister Maria Faustina died of tuberculosis in Krakow, Poland, on October 5, 1938. Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1993, and canonized her seven years later.

Reflection

Devotion to God’s Divine Mercy bears some resemblance to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In both cases, sinners are encouraged not to despair, not to doubt God’s willingness to forgive them if they repent. As Psalm 136 says in each of its 26 verses, “God’s love [mercy] endures forever.”

Prayer of Saint Faustina

O Jesus, stretched out upon the cross, I implore You,

give me the grace of following faithfully

the most holy will of Your Father in all things,

always and everywhere.

And when this will of God seems to me very harsh and difficult to fulfill,

it is then I beg You, Jesus, may power and strength flow upon me

from Your wounds, and may my lips keep repeating –

Your will be done, O Lord (…)

O most compassionate Jesus,

grant me the grace to forget myself that I may live totally for souls,

helping You in the work of salvation,

according to the most holy will of Your Father…

A short prayer for when you see a crucifix

1

Raise your heart to God in recognition of his love for you.

Depending on your circumstances, you may walk or drive past a crucifix on a daily basis. For some of us it can become such a routine that we no longer recognize what we are seeing.Yet, when we step back and consider what the crucifix is and what it represents, our hearts should be in awe.

One way to foster this realization is to say a prayer every time you see a crucifix. It doesn’t have to be long and most of the time it can be a spontaneous prayer from the heart.

Below is one such example that highlights the immense love Jesus had for all of us, but most importantly, for you in particular. Jesus died on the cross for you, personally, something that we don’t always remember. This reality should make our hearts leap for joy and desire to love God in return for such a wondrous gift.

The next time you see a crucifix, try saying a short prayer, acknowledging the great love God has for you.

To what excess, O my Savior, have you loved me?

O Jesus crucified for my salvation, save me!

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, OCTOBER 5)

Saint Faustina Kowalska; Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos

Prayer for the Morning

Come, let us go up with joy to the house of the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Children of the heavenly King,

As you journey, sweetly sing;

Sing your Savior’s worthy praise,

Glorious in his works and ways.

We are traveling home to God,

In the way the fathers trod;

They are happy now, and we

Soon their happiness shall see.

Lift your eyes, you sons of light,

Zion’s city is in sight:

There our endless home shall be,

There our Lord we soon shall see.

PSALM 84:2-3, 6-8, 11a, 12

Jesus instructed the disciples to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick—no food, no sack, no money in their belts. (cf. Mk 6:8)

We are a pilgrim people, journeying through the varied landscapes of life on our way to the heavenly Jerusalem. Let us travel light, unburdened by useless baggage—material or spiritual—and sing this pilgrim psalm to the God who has given us such a glorious goal in life.

How lovely is your dwelling place,

Lord, God of hosts.

My soul is longing and yearning,

is yearning for the courts of the Lord.

My heart and my soul ring out their joy

to God, the living God.

They are happy, whose strength is in you,

in whose hearts are the roads to Zion.

As they go through the Bitter Valley

they make it a place of springs,

the autumn rain covers it with blessings.

They walk with ever growing strength,

they will see the God of gods in Zion.

One day within your courts

is better than a thousand elsewhere.

For the Lord God is a rampart, a shield;

he will give us his favor and glory.

The Lord will not refuse any good

to those who walk without blame.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Nehemiah 9:12-13)

With a column of cloud you led [your people] by day,/ and by night with a column of fire,/ To light the way of their journey,/ the way in which they must travel./ On Mount Sinai you came down,/ you spoke with them from heaven;/ You gave them just ordinances, firm laws,/ good statutes, and commandments.

Come, follow me. (Mk 10:21)

Let us pray with confidence to the God who calls us to travel toward the Kingdom that is to come:

R/Lead us, O Lord.

We are your people, who walk the desert road to the Promised Land:

– keep us faithful to the demands of the journey

today. R/

We are your people, called to follow Jesus, the Lord:

– make us steadfast disciples, freed from all that would hold us back. R/

We are your people, destined for the heavenly Jerusalem:

– give us strength to go on when we grow weary of the journey. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord, as we travel through this day of our life, our strength is in you; in our hearts are the roads to our eternal destination, the place where you dwell for ever with your people in joy and in peace. Sustain us as we pass through the bitter valleys of suffering; shield us as dangers threaten; let us rejoice in the springs of living water that refresh us on our way; and keep us faithful until journey’s end, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
