AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Vincent de Paul (SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27)

Patron Saint of Social Missions. Founder of the Congregation of the Missions and the Daughters of Charity (1580-1660)

St. Vincent de Paul: “Give me a man of prayer and he will be capable of everything. He may say with the apostle, ‘I can do all things in him who strengthens me.”

His life

+ Born in 1580, Vincent was ordained when he was only twenty-years old and appointed to serve as chaplain of Queen Margaret of Valois. He later became the private chaplain to the powerful Gondi Family.

+ While ministering to peasants on the Gondi estate, Vincent came to understand that God was calling him to serve the poor and most marginalized.

+ Returning to Paris, Monsieur Vincent helped galley slaves, organized charitable confraternities to provide food and clothing for the poor, and founded a new community of priests and brothers dedicated to the missions and formation of the seminarians: the Congregation of the Missions (now more commonly known as the Vincentians). A short time later, aided by Saint Louise de Marillac, he founded the Daughters of Charity.

+ Always gentle, understanding, and aware of the needs of the poor, Vincent de Paul died in 1660. Canonized in 1737, he is honored as the patron saint of social workers.

+ Inspired by the life and mission of Saint Vincent, Blessed Frederic Ozanam established a charitable organization dedicated to the care of the sick and poor. Since 1833 Frederic’s “conference of charity”—the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul—has provided care for countless people in need throughout the world.

For prayer and reflection

“We must love our neighbor as being made in the image of God and as an object of his love.”—Saint Vincent de Paul

Prayer

O God, who for the relief of the poor

and the formation of the clergy

endowed the Priest Saint Vincent de Paul

with apostolic virtues,

grant, we pray, that, afire with that same spirit,

we may love what he loved

and put into practice what he taught.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27)

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Prayer for the Morning

O praise the Lord, all you peoples!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

And wilt thou pardon, Lord,

A sinner such as I,

Although thy book his crimes record,

Of such a crimson dye?

So deep are they engraved,

So terrible their fear,

The righteous scarcely shall be saved,

And where shall I appear?

O thou Physician blest,

Make clean my guilty soul

And me, by many a sin oppressed,

Restore and keep me whole.

I know not how to praise

Thy mercy and thy love;

But deign my soul from earth to raise

And learn from thee above.

PSALM 117

God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Cor 1:9)

God never wearies of calling us back to himself. His patient love for us exceeds all our willfulness and wandering, all our stubbornness and stupidity! This shortest of all psalms captures vividly the promise of today’s readings.

O praise the Lord, all you nations,

acclaim him, all you peoples!

Strong is his love for us;

he is faithful for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Corinthians 10:12-13)

Whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall. No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.

If a wicked man, turning from the wickedness

he has committed, does what is right and just,

he shall preserve his life. (Ez 18:27)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

In your distress, you shall finally return to the Lord, your God, and heed his voice. (cf. Dt 4:30)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

In the faithful and obedient Christ, we rise to a new life of fidelity to God’s will. Let us pray:

R/You are faithful for ever! Come to our aid.

You obeyed to heal our disobedience:

– make us obedient like you. R/

You returned to your Father in glory:

– may we return in repentance. R/

You died that we might live:

– help us to die to our evil desires. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God our Father, you sent your only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to bring us back from the ways of blind disobedience to the reign of light where your love rules all hearts. Keep us faithful to the gift you have given through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are children of the living God:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Our Father, we have wandered

And hidden from your face;

In foolishness have squandered

Your legacy of grace.

But now, in exile dwelling,

We rise with fear and shame,

As distant but compelling,

We hear you call our name.

And now at length discerning

The evil that we do,

Behold us, Lord, returning

With hope and trust to you.

In haste you come to meet us

And home rejoicing bring,

In gladness there to greet us

With calf and robe and ring.

PSALM 40:8b-9, 12-14, 17-18

He said in reply, “I will not,” but afterwards he changed his mind and went. (Mt 21:29)

Wouldn’t we love to experience the kind of once-and-for-all conversion to God’s will that we see in someone like Saint Paul? Most of us, though, make our way more slowly, step by step, going astray at times, changing our minds, but ultimately enabled by the Holy Spirit to do as God desires, like the second son in this Sunday’s Gospel. God gives us room to grow.

In the scroll of the book it stands written

that I should do your will.

My God, I delight in your law

in the depth of my heart.

O Lord, you will not withhold

your compassion from me.

Your merciful love and your truth

will always guard me.

For I am beset with evils

too many to be counted.

My sins have fallen upon me

and my sight fails me.

They are more than the hairs of my head

and my heart sinks.

O Lord, come to my rescue,

Lord, come to my aid.

O let there be rejoicing and gladness

for all who seek you.

Let them ever say: “The Lord is great,”

who love your saving help.

As for me, wretched and poor,

the Lord thinks of me.

You are my rescuer, my help,

O God, do not delay.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Hosea 3:5, 2:1)

Then the people of Israel shall turn back/ and seek the Lord, their God…./ They shall come trembling to the Lord/ and to his bounty, in the last days.…/ Whereas they were called/ “Lo-ammi” [not my people],/ They shall be called,/ “Children of the living God.”

They shall turn to the Lord and he shall be won

over and heal them. (Is 19:22)

CANTICLE OF MARY

When someone falls, does he not rise again?/ if he goes astray, does he not turn back? (Jer 8:4)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us turn to the Lord for mercy, to our God who is generous in forgiving. (cf. Is 55:7)

R/Lord, come to our aid!

When we waver, make us firm: R/

When we refuse to do your will, soften our hearts: R/

When we forget we are your children, bring us back to you: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the Lord guard our going and coming/ both now and for ever. Amen. (cf. Ps 121:8)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Feast of the Nativity

of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

8 September

With joy let us celebrate the nativity of blessed Mary,

that she may intercede for us

before the Lord Jesus Christ.

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer that government leaders will promote unity, honesty and peace

0

Ask God to shower his divine wisdom upon all leaders in government, that they may listen to his guidance and preserve national peace.

It is often the case that maintaining peace within a country is more difficult than achieving peace between different nations. Politics have a tendency to divide a nation, and the quest for power never ends. One concrete action we can do, that we often forget, is to pray for all civil leaders. They need God’s grace, even if we disagree with their positions. Only God can change their hearts and guide them in the promotion of unity, honesty and peace.

Here is a prayer adapted from one by Archbishop Carroll, the first bishop of the United States of America.

We pray to you, O God of might, wisdom, and justice, through Whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed … let the light of your divine wisdom direct [all government leaders], and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peacethe promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety, and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty.

We pray for [our local leaders], for the members of the Assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by your powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability.

And we pray for fellow-citizens that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world can not give.

PADRE PIO’S “SECRET WEAPON PRAYER” THAT BROUGHT THOUSANDS OF MIRACLES

When someone asks you to pray for them, why not pray with “Padre Pio Power”? When I heard that the prayer below (written by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque) was the one Padre Pio would use when people asked him to pray for them, I needed no further encouragement for choosing this prayer in the same way. Padre Pio has tens of thousands of miracles associated with him, including the healing of a very good friend of Pope John Paul II.

When you use this prayer, keep a journal to record these special intentions. Keep in mind this type of petition is for specific needs such as gainful employment, healing from an illness, etc. After some time has passed, refer back to this journal to record the amazing way God answers these prayers. Due to our limited view and God’s eternal view, it is important to always trust that He knows far better what is really needed in these situations. Be open to seeing how sometimes He answers our specific prayers in a way that does not always match exactly with what we asked. When looking back on these petitions, see how His way is better.

Padre Pio’s Sacred Heart Novena Prayer

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of (here name your request).

Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be … Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in Your name, I ask the Father for the grace of (here name your request).

Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be … Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but My words will not pass away.” Encouraged by Your infallible words I now ask for the grace of (here name your request).

Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be … Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of You, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your tender Mother and ours.

Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: “St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.”

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: Sts Cosmas and Damian (SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26)

Patron Saints of Physicians and Pharmacists. Martyrs (d. ca 287)

Their story

+ According to legend, Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers from Syria who worked as physicians, serving the poor at no charge.

+ Although there are various legends about their lives and the way they died, they were probably killed around the year 287.

+ Devotion to these martyrs was widespread and, with Saint Luke the Evangelist and Saint Pantaleon, they are honored as the patron saints of physicians and pharmacists.

+ Saints Cosmas and Damian are included in the Roman Canon (the First Eucharistic Prayer)

For prayer and reflection

“Holy men shed their glorious blood for the Lord; they loved Christ in their life, they imitated him in their death, and therefore were crowned in triumph.”—Entrance Antiphon for the Mass “for Several Martyrs”

Spiritual bonus

September 26 is also the day the Church remembers Blessed Amparo Rosat Balsach and Blessed María del Calvario Romero Clariana. These Sisters of Christian Doctrine were in Carlet, Valencia, Spain, on September 26, 1936, during the anti-Catholic violence of the Spanish Civil War. They were beatified with other martyred members of their community in 1995.

Prayer

May you be magnified, O Lord,

by the revered memory of your Saints Cosmas and Damian,

for with providence beyond words

you have conferred on them everlasting glory,

and on us, your unfailing help.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26)

Saints Cosmas and Damian; Blessed Virgin Mary

Prayer for the Morning

In honor of Mary, the Mother of God,

let us give praise and thanks to the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

This hymn can be sung to the tune used for

I Know That My Redeemer Lives

O Mother of almighty God,

Forever blest in all your ways,

Give us your own tranquility,

And strength and comfort all our days.

You are a strong and lovely tree,

The fruit of which is purest gold,

Whose branches spread to shelter us,

Whose quiet leaves all peace enfold.

Pray for us now and when we die,

That we may live and ever praise

The Father, Son and Spirit blest

In endless light and timeless days.

PSALM 52:10-11

I bud forth delights like the vine,/ my blossoms become fruit fair and rich. (Sir 24:17)

One tradition holds that the tree of life in the garden of Eden was the olive tree. In the Mediterranean world of the Bible, its fruit provided food, as well as oil for light, heat, and healing. Mary bore the One who is the light of the world and the healing of the nations.

I am like a growing olive tree

in the house of God.

I trust in the goodness of God

for ever and ever.

I will thank you for evermore;

for this is your doing.

I will proclaim that your name is good,

in the presence of your friends.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 24:12-14)

I have struck root among the glorious people,/ in the portion of the Lord, his heritage.

Like a cedar on Lebanon I am raised aloft,/ like a cypress on Mount Hermon,/ Like a palm tree in Engedi,/ like a rosebush in Jericho,/ Like a fair olive tree in the field,/ like a plane tree growing beside the water.

Every tree is known by its own fruit.

(Lk 6:44)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. (Lk 1:42)

born of the house of his servant David.

INTERCESSIONS

Brought to life by the fruit of Mary’s womb, let us pray:

R/Give life, O Lord!

The Virgin Mary received your Word in faith and brought forth fruit in love:

– through her intercession, may your Church bear fruit that will last. R/

The Virgin Mary gave birth to your Son, our Savior:

– through her intercession, bring your Church to full maturity in your Kingdom. R/

The Virgin Mary is honored as the Mother of God:

– through her intercession, gather children from every land into your family through the proclamation

of the Word and the celebration of the sacraments. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, you give life to the world through the life, Death, and Resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Through the intercession of his Mother, grant us the light and healing he brings, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25)

Prayer for the Evening

By his wounds, we were healed:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Father, I stretch my hands to thee,

No other help I know;

If thou withdraw thyself from me,

Ah! whither shall I go?

What did thine only Son endure,

Before I drew my breath!

What pain, what labor, to secure

My soul from endless death!

Surely thou can not let me die;

O speak, and I shall live;

And here I will unwearied lie,

Till thou thy Spirit give.

The worst of sinners would rejoice,

Could they but see thy face:

O, let me hear thy quickening voice,

And taste thy pardoning grace.

PSALM 41:2-6, 8-14

Power came forth from [Jesus] and healed them all. (Lk 6:19)

Human need of every kind cries out to God for healing. The sharpest cry is the plea of the human heart betrayed and wounded by the sins of self and others. The Lord hears every call for help, and heals by taking upon himself the sufferings of all who are impoverished and weakened by failure, sin, and death.

Happy the man who considers the poor and the weak.

The Lord will save him in the day of evil,

will guard him, give him life,

make him happy in the land

and will not give him up to the will of his foes.

The Lord will help him on his bed of pain,

he will bring him back from sickness to health.

As for me, I said: “Lord, have mercy on me,

heal my soul for I have sinned against you.”

My foes are speaking evil against me.

“How long before he dies and his name be forgotten?”

My enemies whisper together against me.

They all weigh up the evil which is on me:

“Some deadly thing has fastened upon him,

he will not rise again from where he lies.”

Thus even my friend, in whom I trusted,

who ate my bread, has turned against me.

But you, O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let me rise once more and I will repay them.

By this I shall know that you are my friend,

if my foes do not shout in triumph over me.

If you uphold me I shall be unharmed

and set in your presence for evermore.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel

from age to age. Amen. Amen.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 53:4-5)

It was our infirmities that he bore,/ our sufferings that he endured,/ While we thought of him as stricken,/ as one smitten by God and afflicted./ But he was pierced for our offenses,/ crushed for our sins,/ Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole,/ by his stripes we were healed.

Lord, have mercy on me,/ heal my soul

for I have sinned against you. (Ps 41:5)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The Lord hears the cry of the poor. (cf. Ps 10:17)

INTERCESSIONS

In the name of all who seek to heal the sufferings of the world, we pray:

R/Hear us, O Lord.

You lifted upon your own shoulders the burdens of the poor and the weak:

– strengthen those who follow in your footsteps in caring for those in need. R/

You bore the pain of the disbelief of your relatives and neighbors:

– strengthen those who encounter ridicule in their efforts to live the Gospel. R/

You shunned no leper and turned away from no sinner:

– strengthen those who seek to grow in love for all who suffer. R/

You died for all who live under the weight of mortality:

– raise to life all our beloved dead. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever! Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25)

Prayer for the Morning

Merciful is the Lord: come, let us sing praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O thou, whom once they flocked to hear,

Thy words to hear, thy power to feel;

Suffer the sinners to draw near,

And graciously receive us still.

They that be whole, thyself hast said,

No need of a physician have;

But I am sick, and want thine aid,

And want thine utmost power to save.

Make this the acceptable hour!

Come, O my soul’s physician, thou!

Display thy sanctifying power,

And show me thy salvation now.

PSALM 38:2-11, 22-23

I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope. (Jer 29:11)

The penitential psalms very often speak of sin as a sickness brought on by the attack of enemies. Their vivid descriptions of the sinner’s sufferings remind us again and again that the misery of sin is not what God wants for his beloved children.

O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger;

do not punish me, Lord, in your rage.

Your arrows have sunk deep in me;

your hand has come down upon me.

Through your anger all my body is sick:

through my sin, there is no health in my limbs.

My guilt towers higher than my head;

it is a weight too heavy to bear.

My wounds are foul and festering,

the result of my own folly.

I am bowed and brought to my knees.

I go mourning all the day long.

All my frame burns with fever;

all my body is sick.

Spent and utterly crushed,

I cry aloud in anguish of heart.

O Lord, you know all my longing:

my groans are not hidden from you.

My heart throbs, my strength is spent;

the very light has gone from my eyes.

O Lord, do not forsake me!

My God, do not stay afar off!

Make haste and come to my help,

O Lord, my God, my savior!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 57:18-19)

I saw [my people’s] ways,/ but I will heal them and lead them;/ I will give full comfort/ to them and to those who mourn for them,/ I, the Creator, who gave them life.

Peace, peace to the far and the near,/ says the Lord; and I will heal them.

I will heal their defection,/ I will love them freely.

(Hos 14:5)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

I will restore you to health;/ of your wounds I will heal you, says the Lord. (Jer 30:17)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray to the Divine Physician:

R/Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we have sinned.

Hold back the punishment we fear:

– grant us the healing for which we long. R/

Lift from us the burden of our guilt:

– grant us the freedom we have sold for illusions of pleasure or power. R/

Strengthen our longing for goodness:

– remove our foolish preferences for sinful rewards. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, our Healer and our Good, you sent your Son to cure the world’s sickness by taking upon himself the burden of its guilt. Heal the diseased vision that causes us to mistake evil for good; heal the sickened mind that causes us to mistake selfishness for love; heal the unhealthy habits that we have made our own, so that we may stand before you, whole in body, soul, and spirit, to sing your praise for ever with all the saints, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24)

Prayer for the Evening

All God’s ways are holy: come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

The Lamb’s high banquet called to share,

Arrayed in garments white and fair,

The Red Sea past, we now would sing

To Jesus our triumphant King.

Upon the altar of the cross

His body has redeemed our loss;

And, tasting of his precious Blood,

In him we live anew to God.

Now Christ our Passover is slain,

The Lamb of God without a stain;

His flesh, the true unleavened Bread,

For us is freely offerèd.

Christ rises conqu’ror from the grave,

From death returning, strong to save;

With his right hand the tyrant chains,

And paradise for all regains.

PSALM 77:14-21

By faith they crossed the Red Sea as if it were dry land. (Heb 11:29)

We dwell in wonder before the paradox of God. The all-holy, all-powerful God of mystery and might came down to be with his people enslaved in Egypt and to lead them personally to freedom through the sea. Far more amazing still, this same God came to take our very flesh to lead us through death to life.

Your ways, O God, are holy.

What god is great as our God?

You are the God who works wonders.

You showed your power among the peoples.

Your strong arm redeemed your people,

the sons of Jacob and Joseph.

The waters saw you, O God,

the waters saw you and trembled;

the depths were moved with terror.

The clouds poured down rain,

the skies sent forth their voice;

your arrows flashed to and fro.

Your thunder rolled round the sky,

your flashes lighted up the world.

The earth was moved and trembled

when your way led through the sea,

your path through the mighty waters

and no one saw your footprints.

You guided your people like a flock

by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Wisdom 19:7-8)

The cloud overshadowed their camp;/ and out of what had before been water, dry land was seen emerging:/ Out of the Red Sea an unimpeded road,/ and a grassy plain out of the mighty flood./ Over this crossed the whole nation sheltered by your hand,/ after they beheld stupendous wonders.

What god is great as our God? (Ps 77:14)

CANTICLE OF MARY

He is a deliverer and savior,/ working signs and wonders in heaven and on earth. (Dn 6:28)

God is our deliverer, our Savior. In faith let us pray:

R/You are the God who works wonders!

You rule the wind and storm:

– rule the restlessness of our hearts and save us from all disturbance. R/

You led your people through the sea dry-shod:

– lead us and our loved ones through the unseen dangers of a disbelieving world. R/

You delivered your people from slavery and death:

– deliver us from the subtle destruction of indifference and careless habit. R/

Our Father….

May the Lord deliver us from all evil and bring us to life everlasting! Amen.

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Feast of the Nativity

of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

8 September

With joy let us celebrate the nativity of blessed Mary,

that she may intercede for us

before the Lord Jesus Christ.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
