Prayer when you are lonely

0

Dearest Lord, make us remember,

when the world is cold and dreary,

and we know not where to turn for comfort,

that there is always one spot bright and cheerful—the Sanctuary.

When we are in desolation of spirit,

when all who are dear to us have passed away,

like summer flowers, and none are left to love us and care for us,

whisper to our troubled souls that there is one friend who dies not—

one whose love never changes—Jesus on the altar.

When sorrows thicken and crush us with their burden,

when we look in vain for comfort,

let thy dear words come forth with full force from the tabernacle,

“Come to me all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will refresh you.”

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8)

Prayer for the Evening

Praise, O servants of the Lord,

praise the name of the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Mary, Mistress of the world,

And Queen of heaven’s blissful court,

O gleaming Star on life’s wide sea,

And Virgin Mother, pure as snow.

To our poor earth, fair daughter, come,

In all your virgin glory, shine,

For you will bear most noble Flow’r,

When God the Son comes down as man.

Your birth from David’s chosen stem

We venerate with joy this day.

You form our hope of Light to come,

To gladden and relieve our woe.

We dwell on earth, but through your prayer

Access to heaven we can win,

Once ransomed by the sacrifice

Of Christ your Son in which we share.

PSALM 113

It was not because you are the largest of all nations that the Lord set his heart on you and chose you, for you are really the smallest of all nations. It was because the Lord loved you. (Dt 7:7-8a)

From the flesh of a lowly, unnoticed daughter of Israel, a people small and unimportant in the vast stretches of the Roman Empire, was born the One who would deliver the entire world from the bondage of sin and reign for ever as King of kings and Lord of lords.

Praise, O servants of the Lord,

praise the name of the Lord!

May the name of the Lord be blessed

both now and for evermore!

From the rising of the sun to its setting

praised be the name of the Lord!

High above all nations is the Lord,

above the heavens his glory.

Who is like the Lord, our God,

who has risen on high to his throne

yet stoops from the heights to look down,

to look down upon heaven and earth?

From the dust he lifts up the lowly,

from his misery he raises the poor

to set him in the company of princes,

yes, with the princes of his people.

To the childless wife he gives a home

and gladdens her heart with children.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Romans 9:4-5)

They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen.

Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion!/

See, your king shall come to you.

(cf. Zec 9:9)

CANTICLE OF MARY

You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah,/ too small to be among the clans of Judah,/ From you shall come forth for me/ one who is to be ruler in Israel. (Mi 5:1)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

From humility is born salvation. Humbly let us pray:

R/Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, hear our prayer.

You chose the lowly of this world to bring salvation to all nations:

– grant your people the wisdom to seek your love rather than worldly honor. R/

You chose the faithful to bring forth the fruit of your promise:

– strengthen us in fidelity amid the uncertainties of our day. R/

You chose the unexpected to bring forth the gift of life:

– grant us freedom of spirit to rejoice in your work in every circumstance. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the God in whose ways/ our fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,/ The God who has been our shepherd/ from our birth to this day,/ The Angel who has delivered us from all harm,/ bless us and keep us in peace. Amen. (cf. Gn 48:15-16)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Feast of the Nativity

of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

8 September

With joy let us celebrate the nativity of blessed Mary,

that she may intercede for us

before the Lord Jesus Christ.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Place yourself under Mary’s protection with this prayer

Place yourself under Mary’s protection with this prayer

From the earliest centuries of Christianity, the faithful have turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary as their refuge, their advocate, and their surest guide to her Son. She is a living Mother, ever attentive to the cries of her children. Her intercession is not a substitute for Christ’s mercy—it is its most tender expression. For just as the Son came to us through her, so too does He delight that we return to Him through her. In turning to her, the Church finds comfort.

The following ancient prayer, attributed to St. Ephrem the Syrian, reflects this timeless confidence in the Virgin’s mercy and power. It is a hymn of trust, an offering of consecration, and a plea for protection. As you pray it, do so with the certainty that her gaze never leaves those who seek her help.

PRAYER

O immaculate and entirely-pure Virgin Mary, Mother of God.
Through you we have been reconciled with our God.
You are the advocate of sinners, and the secure haven of those who are sailing on the sea of this life.
You are the consolation of the world, the ransom of captives, the joy of the sick, the comfort of the afflicted, the refuge.
O great Mother of God, cover us with the wings of your mercy, and pity us.
We are given to you, and consecrated to your service.
O immaculate Virgin, we are under your protection.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8)

The story

+ The feast of the Birth of Mary bridges the promises made to the people of Israel with the coming of the long-awaited Messiah.

+ According to tradition, Mary was born to Ann and Joachim, an elderly couple who had long prayed that God would bless them with a child. Although stories of the birth and childhood of Mary of Nazareth are not included in the Sacred Scripture, there are many legends related to the early life of the Mother of Jesus.

+ This feast is connected with a fifth-century basilica built on the site of the pool of Bethesda (see John 5:1-9), a site believed by some to have been the location of the home of Saints Joachim and Ann; the Basilica of St. Ann stands there today.

+ The feast of introduced in the city of Rome by Pope Sergius I.

For prayer and reflection

The Lord begot me, the firstborn of his ways,

the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago;

From of old I was poured forth,

at the first, before the earth.

When there were no depths I was brought forth,

when there were no fountains or springs of water.—Provers 8:22-24a

Prayer

Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord,

the gift of heavenly grace,

that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin

may bring deeper peace

to those for whom the birth of her Son

was the dawning of salvation.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8)

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Prayer for the Morning

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good:

his love endures for ever!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Radiant Dawn of our salvation,

Hope of life for all the earth!

Now we sing God’s new creation

On this day of such a birth.

Virgin, thou art filled with beauty;

Spot and stain are not in thee.

God has made thee perfect duly

For thy Son’s divinity.

Cry, O Blessed, to high heaven;

Sing our praise, O Spotless One!

We, thy children, are forgiven

Through thy Maker, Lord, and Son.

God has looked on thee with favor;

Generations this acclaim.

We rejoice in God thy Savior,

For with thee we praise his Name.

PSALM 106:1-5

When the most holy Virgin was born, the whole world was made radiant; blessed is the branch and blessed the stem which bore such holy fruit. (Liturgy of the Hours)

In Mary, daughter of the House of David, the stump of Jesse buds forth the beginning of salvation, for she who is the stem bears for all peoples the fruit that gives everlasting life, Christ the Lord.

O give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever.

Who can tell the Lord’s mighty deeds?

Who can recount all his praise?

They are happy who do what is right,

who at all times do what is just.

O Lord, remember me

out of the love you have for your people.

Come to me, Lord, with your help

that I may see the joy of your chosen ones

and may rejoice in the gladness of your nation

and share the glory of your people.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 11:1-3)

A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,/ and from his roots a bud shall blossom./ The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him:/ a spirit of wisdom and of understanding,/ A spirit of counsel and of strength,/ a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord,/ and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord.

Blessed is the fruit of her womb!

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The Root of Jesse has blossomed; the Star has risen out of Jacob. (Traditional Marian Antiphon)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With thanks and praise, let us pray to Christ through the intercession of his mother:

R/Jesus, Son of Mary, hear our prayer!

Sun of Justice, the Virgin was born before you as dawn comes before day:

– make us walk in your light. R/

Vine of life, the Virgin is the root from which you sprang:

– bless your people, that we may remain faithful to you. R/

Living bread, the Virgin gave you the flesh of our human race:

– nourish in us the fullness of life through her prayer and example. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, you gave life to the world through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Son of the Blessed Virgin for whose birth we give thanks this day. Grant us, we beseech you, the grace to honor with our lives the Savior whom she bore, Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray this night prayer to surround your home with angelic protection

0

Ask God to send his angels around your home to protect it from nighttime danger.

Before we go to sleep, we often make sure our house or apartment is secure. This is important, but we should also invite God and his heavenly hosts of angels to protect home as well, giving us added security. Here is a prayer from The Catholic prayer book and manual of meditations that can be included in your nightly routine, allowing you to rest in peace, knowing that your house is protected.

Protect us, Lord, under the shadow of your wings. Keep us this night without sin. Visit, we ask you, O Lord, this home, and repel from it all the snares of the enemy. Let your holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace; and may your blessing be upon us for ever, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7)

Prayer for the Evening

O sing to the Lord, giving thanks!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

From north and south, from east to west,

All praise and honor be addressed

To God most holy, by whose grace

God’s people dwell in Love’s embrace.

The poor, the rich stand side by side.

To all, God’s arms are opened wide.

God beckons us to come, draw near,

Then comforts us and dries our tears.

And we, in turn, must show God’s care

To all in need or in despair.

That when our earthly course is run,

We hear these words of God’s own Son:

“The least, to whom you gave your hand,

Will walk with you to God’s own land.

By serving others and your Lord,

You’ve gained your life and your reward!”

PSALM 116:5-6, 12-19

I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. (Jn 13:15)

The immensity of God’s compassion for us is the measure of the compassion God asks us to show to one another in our exiles, our brokenness of heart, our wounds, and our lowliness. How can we possibly show compassion as great as God’s? Not alone, but in Jesus Christ, whose body we are.

How gracious is the Lord, and just;

our God has compassion.

The Lord protects the simple hearts;

I was helpless so he saved me.

How can I repay the Lord

for his goodness to me?

The cup of salvation I will raise;

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord

is the death of his faithful.

Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;

you have loosened my bonds.

A thanksgiving sacrifice I make:

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people,

in the courts of the house of the Lord,

in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Corinthians 12:12, 14, 26-27)

As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.

Now the body is not a single part, but many. If [one] part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.

Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.

Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of

these least brothers of mine, you did for me.

(Mt 25:40)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Well done, my good and faithful servant. Come, share your master’s joy. (cf. Mt 25:21)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray for the world’s needs with compassion of heart, saying:

R/Hear our prayer, loving God!

For all who call out for our compassion and whom we fail to hear:

– have mercy on them, we pray: R/

For all who care for others without concern for the cost to themselves:

– grant them strength and perseverance, we pray: R/

For all who have died and stand in need of our prayers:

– grant them life eternal, we pray: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May Christ dwell in our hearts through faith, and may charity be the root and foundation of our life. Amen. (cf. Eph 3:17)

A prayer to thank God when recovering from an illness

0

Don’t forget to praise and thank God when you recover your health.

Many of us cry out to God during an illness and ask for a recovery. However, do we thank God when we do recover? As with the 10 lepers who were cured by Jesus, only a few of us remember to give thanks to God for the restoration of our health.

While we may not always see his hand in our cure, we should realize that God is always there and is a principal agent in recovery.

Here is a prayer adapted from The Catholic prayer book and manual of meditations that praises God for a return to good health.

Almighty and everlasting God, I acknowledge your blessing in the recovery of my health, and return to you my most hearty thanks for it. I beg your grace for making a better use of my life than I have done; that I may correct all the errors of my past life, that I may improve in virtue, be an example to others, and dedicate that health to you which is now your special gift; that thus living united to you, I may be ever prepared for my last hour, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Bless the Lord, O my soul: may he be praised and glorified for ever.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

Blessed be the name of the Lord, from now and for ever.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7)

Prayer for the Morning

Let us invoke the Lord:

in the morning, he hears our prayer!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Who can compare with your holiness,

honor and glory?

Your wondrous deeds are the splendor

of your people’s story;

Your mighty arm

Saves your beloved from harm:

So shall the Lord reign for ever.

With constant love, O God, you set us free

and you fed us,

Bringing us safely to dwell in the land

where you led us,

Guarded by grace,

Planted in your holy place:

So shall the Lord reign for ever.

PSALM 5:2-4, 12-13

Over all, his glory will be shelter and protection:/ shade from the parching heat of day,/ refuge and cover from storm and rain. (Is 4:6)

To the Psalmist, the “glory” of God meant the sheltering, guiding, protecting cloud of light in which God accompanied his people across the desert and came to meet them in the place of worship.

To my words give ear, O Lord,

give heed to my groaning.

Attend to the sound of my cries,

my King and my God.

It is you whom I invoke, O Lord.

In the morning you hear me;

in the morning I offer you my prayer,

watching and waiting.

All those you protect shall be glad

and ring out their joy.

You shelter them; in you they rejoice,

those who love your name.

It is you who bless the just man, Lord:

you surround him with favor as with a shield.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 34:16)

The eyes of the Lord are upon those who love him;/ he is their mighty shield and strong support,/ A shelter from the heat, a shade from the noonday sun,/ a guard against stumbling, a help against falling.

My God is the rock where I take refuge;/ my shield,

my mighty help, my stronghold.

(Ps 18:3)

10 Ways to honor Our Lady of Sorrows this September

What the month of September means to Catholics, and how to honor it in your home.

Did you know that in the Catholic Church each of the 12 months of the year has a devotional theme? For Catholics, September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows, immediately following August’s devotion to the Immaculate Heart, and preceding October’s devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, September is an ideal time to strengthen our connection to Our Lady. Continuing our monthly series on ways to showcase each month’s Catholic theme in your life, here are 10 ways you can honor Our Lady of Sorrows this September:

1. DON’T RUN FROM THE SORROWS OF OTHERS.

Be fully present to them, even when their difficulty is hard for you to think about. Really listen when someone wants to talk about a worry, a grief, a pain, or a loneliness and offer time and empathy.

2. PUT EMPATHY INTO ACTION.

Offer to help ease the suffering of another, carrying their cross for a bit, like Simon of Cyrene. Offer to drive a friend to the doctor, visit someone in the hospital, pray a Rosary for a friend’s special intention, babysit for an overwhelmed mom or spend time with an elderly relative while their caretaker has some time to themselves.

3. BRING AN IMAGE OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS TO SOMEONE WHO’S SUFFERING.

It could be a painting, a prayer card, a statue, or even a computer printout. In this way you can offer them the companionship of her compassion and the opportunity to offer their sorrows up, giving their pain a greater purpose.

4. PRAY THE POWERFUL SEVEN SORROWS ROSARY OR THE SEVEN SORROWS DEVOTION.

The Seven Sorrows devotion involves praying seven Hail Marys a day, each one while meditating on one of Our Lady’s seven sorrows, which are:

  • The prophecy of Simeon.
  • The flight into Egypt.
  • The loss of the Child Jesus in the temple.
  • The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross.
  • The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus.
  • The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross and preparation for burial.
  • The burial of Jesus.

And the Seven Sorrows Rosary involves dwelling upon each of the seven sorrows as you would one of the mysteries of the rosary, with seven Hail Marys instead of a decade. Begin each sorrow with an Our Father. Here are more details on the Seven Sorrows prayers, chaplet, (little Rosary) and novenas.

5. DONATE SOMETHING.

Even if it is a widow’s mite of the few dollars you can manage, give to a charity for those suffering. Here‘s one to consider.

6. PRAY DAILY FOR SOMEONE WHO’S SUFFERING AND LET THEM KNOW.

This is a great month for this prayer for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, September 15:

O God, in Whose Passion a sword of sorrow pierced the most dear soul of the glorious Virgin-Mother, Mary, as foretold by Simeon, mercifully grant that we who reverently commemorate Her sorrows, may obtain the blessed effect of Thy Passion. Who livest and reignest, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.  Amen.

7. LIGHT A CANDLE AT YOUR PARISH CHURCH BEFORE A STATUE OF OUR LADY.

Spend special time there in prayer with this Prayer to Our Mother of Sorrows.

8. MAKE AN ALTAR TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS IN YOUR HOME.

Choose an image of the Sorrowful Virgin and adorn it with flowers that you’ll keep refreshing all month as a little act of tenderness, and candles that you light during prayer. Place a small box near the image and ask each member of the family to write one act of love or mercy they promise to do to console Our Sorrowful Lady this month. Place that resolution in the box as a gift of love.

9. FIND AN IMAGE OF THE “PIETA” BY MICHELANGELO.

Meditate upon its searing beauty as it inspires you in prayer. With this sublime sculpture, Michelangelo shaped the sixth sorrow of Mary into one of the all-time greatest works of art.

10. LISTEN TO STABAT MATER FOR ALTO SOLO RV 621.

Composed by a Catholic priest, Fr. Antonio Vivaldi, it translates as “Sorrowful Mother.” It’s incomparable beauty is perfect to accompany or inspire prayer.
