PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us sing psalms to the name of the Lord,

the Most High!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Our troubled conscience tells that we

Have bitterly offended thee;

We pray thee, cleanse us by thy grace

And every stain of sin efface.

If thou wilt not, who shall condone?

Send pardon, for ’tis thine alone;

And grant that we may pray aright

From hearts all blameless in thy sight.

PSALM 13

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mk 15:34)

Once Saint Anthony of the Desert was caught in a prolonged, painful struggle with his own inner demons. When it was over, he asked the Lord: “Where were you?” Christ answered, “I was right here with you all along, Anthony.” Christ suffers in and with those who suffer, and he asks his followers to do the same. Compassion never stands at arm’s length.

How long, O Lord, will you forget me?

How long will you hide your face?

How long must I bear grief in my soul,

this sorrow in my heart day and night?

How long shall my enemy prevail?

Look at me, answer me, Lord my God!

Give light to my eyes lest I fall asleep in death,

lest my enemy say: “I have overcome him”;

lest my foes rejoice to see my fall.

As for me, I trust in your merciful love.

Let my heart rejoice in your saving help:

Let me sing to the Lord for his goodness to me,

singing psalms to the name of the Lord, the Most High.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Hebrews 2:17-18)

[Christ] had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Stay with us, O Lord!

(cf. Lk 24:29)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Behold, I am with you always. (Mt 28:20)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Offer to God your daily work with this short prayer

1

Before you begin a task, give it to God so that he can sanctify it and make it fruitful.

Did you know that everything, even your daily tasks at work, can be offered to God? Sometimes we forget that God wants to be involved in our every endeavor, even if our job is making burgers at a fast-food restaurant. It may not seem glamorous or holy, but with God, all things can be sanctified and made into an offering.Here is a short prayer that can be prayed immediately before any task you are about to begin. It reminds us to do everything for his glory, not our own.

All for you, O Lord, O my Jesus, all for you!

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11)

Prayer for the Morning

Great is God’s love for us:

come, let us worship!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Christ be beside me,

Christ be before me,

Christ be behind me,

King of my heart.

Christ be within me,

Christ be below me,

Christ be above me,

Never to part.

Christ on my right hand,

Christ on my left hand,

Christ all around me,

Shield in the strife.

Christ in my sleeping,

Christ in my sitting,

Christ in my rising,

Light of my life.

PSALM 57:2-6

The serpent asked the woman, “Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?” (Gn 3:1)

The Psalmist knows that only in God can we find true protection and secure rest.

Have mercy on me, God, have mercy,

for in you my soul has taken refuge.

In the shadow of your wings I take refuge

till the storms of destruction pass by.

I call to God the Most High,

to God who has always been my help.

May he send from heaven and save me

and shame those who assail me.

May God send his truth and his love.

My soul lies down among lions,

who would devour the sons of men.

Their teeth are spears and arrows,

their tongue a sharpened sword.

O God, arise above the heavens;

may your glory shine on earth!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 12:43-45)

When an unclean spirit goes out of a person it roams through arid regions searching for rest but finds none. Then it says, “I will return to my home from which I came.” But upon returning, it finds it empty, swept clean, and put in order. Then it goes and brings back with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they move in and dwell there; and the last condition of that person is worse than the first.

You are our protection, Lord!

(cf. Ps 71:1)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The threshold of the house of God/ I prefer to the dwellings of the wicked. (Ps 84:11)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

God has opened to us the treasures of his own house. Let us pray for the wisdom to stay within the walls built by his Word.

R/Protect and guide your people, Lord.

Sin speaks to us in many disguises:

– sharpen our ears to discern your voice. R/

Your wisdom is a difficult virtue:

– make our hearts wise. R/

Your love is beyond price:

– form in us a true set of values. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, you desire life for your people. Protect us from all that would lead us away from you; guide us safely to the home you have prepared for us, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DAILY MEDITATION (THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10)

MEDITATION OF THE DAY

For Good Measure

We have a tendency to become obsessed by the faults of those around us. That is understandable: it is their faults which make us suffer and this suffering in turn reminds us of them continually…. Faults are ugly. Why not look at the virtues which are beautiful?… The good intentions of others so often escape our notice. Do not judge intentions. I assure you, it has happened to me that, having ascribed a bad intention to someone, I have later had proof, neat and clear, that I was wrong, that he had something completely different in mind than what I thought. What a lesson! As much as you can, ascribe good intentions to your neighbor. (I say “as much as you can,” because at times, of course, the contrary is as plain as daylight.)…

Little Thérèse wrote, “When I want to increase in myself my love of neighbor, especially when the devil tries to put before the eyes of my soul the faults of this or that sister who is less appealing to me, I hasten to seek out her virtues, her good desires. I tell myself that if I have seen her fall one time, she may well have undergone a great many victories that she hides through humility, and that even what appears as a fault to me could very well be an act of virtue because of the intention. Ah, I understand now that perfect charity consists of enduring the faults of others, of not being at all astonished at their weaknesses, of being edified by the smallest acts of virtue which one sees them practice.”…

Obviously you are not expected to experience the same feelings in your heart toward a friend and toward someone who wishes you evil…. There are even holy kinds of anger. But always remember that nothing troubles hearts, nothing troubles Jesus in us like dissension and discord. Nothing is more directly opposed to him…. No one is completely in control of his first reactions, but you must recollect yourselves very quickly. “To pardon an injustice received is to heal the wound in your own heart,” said Saint Vincent de Paul.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10)

Prayer for the Evening

Strong is God’s love for us;/ he is faithful for ever:

come, let us give thanks and praise! (cf. Ps 117:2)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O King for ever glorious,

O Son for sinners slain,

O Christ who died victorious

to rise and rule and reign:

the hosts on high enthrone you

at God the Father’s hand;

and wide, to those who own you,

the gates of heaven stand.

In mercy, Lord, behold us,

our God to whom we pray;

let Jesus’ love enfold us

against that final day;

no tale of sin confound us

before the judgment throne;

his righteousness surround us,

who trust in God alone.

PSALM 37:23-29

How shall the young remain sinless?/ By obeying your word. (Ps 119:9)

If you are young, look forward to God’s fidelity to you throughout your life; if you are older, look back on God’s fidelity to you through all that is past. Whatever your age, know that God’s love is the foundation upon which all our hope stands firm.

The Lord guides the steps of a man

and makes safe the path of one he loves.

Though he stumble he shall never fall

for the Lord holds him by the hand.

I was young and now I am old,

but I have never seen the just man forsaken

nor his children begging for bread.

All the day he is generous and lends

and his children become a blessing.

Then turn away from evil and do good

and you shall have a home for ever;

for the Lord loves justice

and will never forsake his friends.

The unjust shall be wiped out for ever

and the children of the wicked destroyed.

The just shall inherit the land;

there they shall live for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Deuteronomy 7:9)

Understand, then, that the Lord, your God, is God indeed, the faithful God who keeps his merciful covenant down to the thousandth generation toward those who love him and keep his commandments.

Faithful is God, faithful and true!

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: The Great Genna Martyrdom (THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10)

Martyrs of Japan, Priests, Religious and Laity (d. September 10, 1622)

Their story

+ Christianity arrived in Japan with Saint Francis Xavier and the first missionaries in the 1540s. In response to the threat of conquest by the Spanish and Portuguese, Japanese shogunate and imperial officials began to seek persecute Japanese Christians and Christian missionaries in an effort to limit European influence and power.

+ Among the thousands of Christians who lost their lives between 1598 and 1632, Blessed Pope Pius IX beatified 205 Christians martyrs in 1867.

+ Among these blessed martyrs were 56 missionaries and lay Christians who were publicly executed together on September 10, 1622. This diverse group included Dominican, Jesuit, and Franciscan priests, seminarians, and religious brothers, as well as husbands, wives and children (the youngest of whom, Petrus Hamanomachi, was only three years old).

+ These 56 martyrs are honored collectively as the martyrs of the “Great Genna Martyrdom of Nagasaki.”

For prayer and reflection

“These are they who come out of the great ordeal and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. For God’s sake they handed their bodies over for punishment, and they have earned unfading crowns.”—Entrance Antiphon for the Mass of the Common of Several Martyrs

Prayer

May the sight of the great number of

your holy Martyrs gladden us, O Lord,

making our faith stronger and bringing us

consolation by the prayers of them all.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10)

Prayer for the Morning

Let us cry out to the Lord our God:

in mercy, he will hear us!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Firm through the endless years,

Your kingdom stands secure,

And your dominion evermore

Through ages shall endure.

For, from the Paraclete,

O Word, you came to earth

And, Christ our God, you humbly stooped

To share our lowly birth.

You came as Light from Light

Within our world to shine,

And brought into the darkest heart

The hope of light divine.

O Savior, God most high,

Incarnate Word of Light,

Be merciful and save us all

From sin’s eternal night.

PSALM 33:1-9

My word shall not return to me void,/ but shall do my will. (cf. Is 55:11)

The Word of God gathers up our many words into one song of praise and petition. In him and through him and with him, we offer our humble prayer.

Ring out your joy to the Lord, O you just;

for praise is fitting for loyal hearts.

Give thanks to the Lord upon the lyre,

with a ten-stringed harp sing him songs.

O sing him a song that is new,

play loudly, with all your skill.

For the word of the Lord is faithful

and all his works to be trusted.

The Lord loves justice and right

and fills the earth with his love.

By his word the heavens were made,

by the breath of his mouth all the stars.

He collects the waves of the ocean;

he stores up the depths of the sea.

Let all the earth fear the Lord,

all who live in the world revere him.

He spoke; and it came to be.

He commanded; it sprang into being.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (2 Corinthians 1:18-20)

As God is faithful, our word to you is not “yes” and “no.” For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us, Silvanus and Timothy and me, was not “yes” and “no,” but “yes” has been in him. For however many are the promises of God, their Yes is in him; therefore, the Amen from us also goes through him to God for glory.

Let your “Yes” mean “Yes,” and your “No” mean “No.” Anything more is from the evil one. (Mt 5:37)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

What came to be through him was life,/ and this life was the light of the human race. (Jn 1:3-4)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

To God, whose gift to us is the Word of life, we pray:

R/Your Word, O Lord, is spirit and life!

For the Word of creation, we praise you, O God:

– teach us to reverence all that your Word has brought into being. R/

For the Word of salvation, we praise you, O God:

– teach us to work for the salvation of all whom you will to save. R/

For the Word of life, we praise you, O God:

– teach us to live according to your word. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God our Father, you have spoken into the chaos of sin the one all-powerful Word of salvation, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Teach us to put our faith in the constancy of your Word and not in the multiplication of our words, through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9)

Prayer for the Evening

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

The Spirit sends us forth to serve;

We go in Jesus’ name

To bring glad tidings to the poor,

God’s favor to proclaim.

We go to comfort those who mourn

And set the burdened free;

Where hope is dim, to share a dream

And help the blind to see.

We go to be the hands of Christ,

To scatter joy like seed,

And all our days, to cherish life,

To do the loving deed.

Then let us go to serve in peace,

The Gospel to proclaim.

God’s Spirit has empowered us;

We go in Jesus’ name.

PSALM 107:1, 10-16

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives,/ to let the oppressed go free. (cf. Lk 4:18)

As Saint Peter knew, the paradox of the Gospel is that we are set free from the chains of our own making by choosing to yoke ourselves to Christ, who bursts our bonds by his own Death and Resurrection.

“O give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever.”

Some lay in darkness and in gloom,

prisoners in misery and chains,

having defied the words of God

and spurned the counsels of the Most High.

He crushed their spirit with toil;

they stumbled; there was no one to help.

Then they cried to the Lord in their need

and he rescued them from their distress.

He led them forth from darkness and gloom

and broke their chains to pieces.

Let them thank the Lord for his goodness,

for the wonders he does for men:

for he bursts the gates of bronze

and shatters the iron bars.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 58:6-7)

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish:/ releasing those bound unjustly,/ untying the thongs of the yoke;/ Setting free the oppressed,/ breaking every yoke;/ Sharing your bread with the hungry,/ sheltering the oppressed and the homeless;/ Clothing the naked when you see them,/ and not turning your back on your own.

For freedom Christ set us free.

(Gal 5:1)

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Peter Claver (WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9)

“Slave of the Blacks Forever”, Jesuit Missionary (1580-1654)

His life

+ Peter was born in Verdu, Spain, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1602.

+ After being advised by Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez that he should become a missionary, Peter asked to be sent the Jesuit missions in the New World.

+ Assigned to Colombia, Peter was ordained in 1616. He dedicated his life to serving enslaved Africans, vowing to serve as “the slave of the blacks forever.”

+ Peter enlisted the help of catechists and translators to help in his work and it is said that he baptized as many 300,000 people during his years of ministry.

+ With his Jesuit confreres, Peter worked to defend the dignity of all peoples, despite the widespread acceptance of slavery. Not only did he meet each slave ship as it entered the port of Cartagena, he would also make every effort to visit the plantations and mines where the slaves were sent. He never ceased advocating for their rights and freedom.

+ Peter Claver died on September 8, 1654, and was canonized in 1888 in the same ceremony as his former confrere Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez. Pope Leo XIII named him patron saint of all those who serve black communities.

+ In 1891, Blessed Mary Theresa Ledóchowska and a group of women took religious vows, forming a new religious community: the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver. Dedicated to working among the poor and the proclamation of the Gospel, the Sisters are currently serving in several countries across the globe.

O God, who made Saint Peter Claver a slave of slaves

and strengthened him with wonderful charity and patience

as he came to their help,

grant, through his intercession,

that, seeking the things of Jesus Christ,

we may love our neighbor in deeds and in truth.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9)

Prayer for the Morning

God lifts up the lowly:

come, let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed,

Great David’s greater Son!

Hail, in the time appointed,

His reign on earth begun!

He comes to break oppression,

To set the captive free;

To take away transgression

And rule in equity.

He comes with succor speedy

To those who suffer wrong;

To help the poor and needy,

And bid the weak be strong;

To give them songs for sighing,

Their darkness turn to light,

Whose souls, condemned and dying,

Were precious in his sight.

PSALM 31:2-6

Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. (1 Cor 9:19)

God sent Saint Peter Claver as an answer to the wordless pleas of slaves in terrible distress. Saint Peter could not free them from physical captivity, but his tireless love spoke a healing word to their dreadful sense of isolation, abandonment, and helplessness.

In you, O Lord, I take refuge.

Let me never be put to shame.

In your justice, set me free,

hear me and speedily rescue me.

Be a rock of refuge for me,

a mighty stronghold to save me,

for you are my rock, my stronghold.

For your name’s sake, lead me and guide me.

Release me from the snares they have hidden

for you are my refuge, Lord.

Into your hands I commend my spirit.

It is you who will redeem me, Lord.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 61:1b-2)

[The Lord] has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly,/ to heal the brokenhearted,/ To proclaim liberty to the captives/ and release to the prisoners,/ To announce a year of favor from the Lord/ and a day of vindication by our God,/ to comfort all who mourn.

Slaves we are, but in our servitude

our God has not abandoned us.

(Ezr 9:9)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Remember that you too were once slaves in Egypt, and the Lord, your God, brought you from there with his strong hand and outstretched arm. (Dt 5:15)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Jesus Christ took on the nature of a slave to set us free. To him let us pray:

R/Hear us and speedily rescue us!

For those who are enslaved by poverty and oppression:

– send people of wisdom and generosity to discover ways to set them free. R/

For those who are enslaved by prejudice and fear:

– send people of courage and self-forgetfulness to lead them out of darkness. R/

For those who are enslaved by addictions, recognized and unrecognized:

– send people enlightened by their own struggles to guide them along right paths. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….
