PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12)

Prayer for the Evening

Christ is our help and our salvation:

come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

The voice of God goes out through all the world:

God’s glory speaks across the universe.

The great King’s herald cries from star to star:

With power, with justice, he will walk his way.

Anointed with the Spirit and with power,

He comes to crown with comfort all the weak,

To show the face of justice to the poor:

With power, with justice, he will walk his way.

His touch will bless the eyes that darkness held,

The lame shall run, the halting tongue shall sing,

And prisoners laugh in light and liberty;

With power, with justice, he will walk his way.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 42:10-16

Fear not, I am with you;/ be not dismayed; I am your God. (Is 41:10a)

Now, as in the 1st century, wherever Christ is present he is at work, freeing, healing, setting right what has been set wrong, for Christ is God’s saving love abiding in our midst.

Sing to the Lord a new song,

his praise from the end of the earth:

Let the sea and what fills it resound,

the coastlands, and those who dwell in them.

Let the steppe and its cities cry out,

the villages where Kedar dwells;

let the inhabitants of Sela exult,

and shout from the top of the mountains.

Let them give glory to the Lord,

and utter his praise in the coastlands.

The Lord goes forth like a hero,

like a warrior he stirs up his ardor;

he shouts out his battle cry,

against his enemies he shows his might:

I have looked away, and kept silence,

I have said nothing, holding myself in;

but now, I cry out as a woman in labor,

gasping and panting.

I will lay waste mountains and hills,

all their herbage I will dry up;

I will turn the rivers into marshes,

and the marshes I will dry up.

I will lead the blind on their journey;

by paths unknown I will guide them.

I will turn darkness into light before them,

and make crooked ways straight.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 7:21-22)

At that time he cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. And he said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.”

I will strengthen you, and help you. (Is 41:10b)

CANTICLE OF MARY

He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people. (Mt 4:23)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

May the Lord be kind and faithful to us. Amen. (cf. 2 Sm 2:6)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12)

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal

Prayer for the Morning

God is our stronghold, the God who shows us love:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Awake, our souls! away, our fears!

Let every trembling thought be gone!

Awake, and run the heavenly race,

And put a cheerful courage on.

True, ’tis a straight and thorny road,

And mortal spirits tire and faint;

But they forget the mighty God,

That feeds the strength of every saint.

O mighty God, your matchless power

Is ever new, and ever young;

And firm endures, while endless years

Their everlasting circles run.

From you, the ever-flowing spring,

Our souls shall drink a fresh supply;

While such as trust their native strength

Shall melt away, and droop, and die.

PSALM 59:2-3, 17-18

Draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. (Eph 6:10)

In a culture that values autonomy and self-reliance, we sometimes imagine that we can call only on our own personal strength to shoulder the burdens of those we care for and to face our own difficulties. The Gospel reminds us again and again that God’s love is our true source of strength. On him the strongest person can lean without apology.

Rescue me, God, from my foes;

protect me from those who attack me.

O rescue me from those who do evil

and save me from bloodthirsty men.

As for me, I will sing of your strength

and each morning acclaim your love

for you have been my stronghold,

a refuge in the day of my distress.

O my Strength, it is you to whom I turn,

for you, O God, are my stronghold,

the God who shows me love.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Corinthians 10:13)

No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.

O Lord, my strength, my fortress,/

my refuge in the day of distress! (Jer 16:19)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me. (Phil 4:13)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

To God our strength we cry out:

R/To you we turn! Hear us!

You are our stronghold in time of trouble:

– grant us the wisdom and the courage to place our trust in you. R/

You are our defender against all evil:

– teach us always to call upon you in prayer. R/

You have delivered your people from death by the power of the cross:

– strengthen us to bear one another’s burdens in
love. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Lord God of power and might, you have revealed to us in Jesus Christ that true strength lies in self-surrendering love. Make us his true disciples in every trial, and make us a true source of strength to one another, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, AUGUST 11)

Prayer for the Evening

Come, let us give thanks to the Father of lights!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

All praise for Clare our sister,

Your saint and servant true,

Whose rule of life and order

Still points the way to you.

Free us, Lord, from corruption,

Fit us for your embrace,

And make us poor in spirit

But rich in Love’s own grace.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 33:2-3, 5-6

I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. (Jn 12:46)

The name “Clare” means light. By the holiness of her life and the depth of her love for Christ, Saint Clare is a mirror in which we see the light of his face.

O Lord, have pity on us, for you we wait.

Be our strength every morning,

our salvation in time of trouble!

At the roaring sound, peoples flee;

when you rise in your majesty, nations are scattered.

The Lord is exalted, enthroned on high;

he fills Zion with right and justice.

That which makes her seasons lasting,

the riches that save her, are wisdom and knowledge;

the fear of the Lord is her treasure.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 5:14-16)

You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

Christ will give you light! (cf. Eph 5:14)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. (Jn 3:21)

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

To Jesus Christ, image of the invisible God, we turn in prayer and say:

R/O Christ, give us light!

You have called us to share the lot of the saints in light:

– rid our hearts of all dark thoughts. R/

Through you we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins:

– make us holy by the prayers and example of your saints. R/

You are the head of the body, the Church:

– make your people a living sacrament of the mystery of salvation. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May God be our light and our salvation! Amen. (cf. Ps 27:1)

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Clare of Assisi (TUESDAY, AUGUST 11)

Disciple of Saint Francis of Assisi, Co-founder of the Poor Clares (1193-1253)

Her life

+ Clare was born into a noble family in Assisi, Italy. She was influenced by the preaching and witness of St. Francis of Assisi and resolved to follow him in his life of poverty.

+ In time, Clare became the foundering member and spiritual mother for a new community of nuns: the Poor Ladies of Assisi. Now more commonly known as the “Poor Clares,” the community grew quickly and Clare opened convents in Germany and Bohemia.

+ For the last twenty years of her life, this holy woman suffered from various illnesses and was often bedridden. In spite of her infirmities, she demanded that her community and the community of “Lesser Brothers” remain faithful to the vocation of Saint Francis.

+ Saint Clare died in 1253 and was canonized two years after her death.

+ Since 1958, Saint Clare has the distinction of being honored as the patron of television. Pope Pius XII granted her this title because of a legend which recalls that one Christmas Eve, when she lay sick in bed, Clare had a vision of the crib and heard her sisters’ singing, just as if she had been present in church.

For prayer and reflection

“We become what we love and what we love shapes what we become.”—Saint Clare of Assisi

Prayer

O God, who in your mercy led Saint Clare to a love of poverty,

grant, through her intercession,

that, following Christ in poverty of spirit,

we may merit to contemplate you

one day in the heavenly Kingdom.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, AUGUST 11)

Saint Clare

Prayer for the Morning

To the Lord,

let us lift up our hearts in prayer!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Gifted with the true Light,

Beauty is Clare’s life:

Duty and delight to

Mirror all God’s love.

Beauty in her dear soul—

Deep serenity;

Poverty of life told

Riches of God’s love.

Beauty with her Sisters,

Clare’s compassiòn,

Passion to insist a

Path for all to love.

Following Saint Francis,

Clare marks out a way:

Pay your love to Jesus—

God surrounds with love.

PSALM 73:23-26, 28

You know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sake he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich. (2 Cor 8:9)

Saint Clare embraced wholeheartedly Saint Francis’ joyful love for poverty as a means of entering into profound communion with Christ crucified. Her nuns, the Poor Clares, are renowned for the penitential austerity of their lives and the joy of their spirits.

I was always in your presence;

you were holding me by my right hand.

You will guide me by your counsel

and so you will lead me to glory.

What else have I in heaven but you?

Apart from you I want nothing on earth.

My body and my heart faint for joy;

God is my possession for ever.

To be near God is my happiness.

I have made the Lord God my refuge.

I will tell of all your works

at the gates of the city of Zion.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Philippians 3:7-10)

Whatever gains I had, these I have come to consider a loss because of Christ. More than that, I even consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God, depending on faith to know him and the power of his resurrection and [the] sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death.

I love you, Lord, my strength!

(Ps 18:2)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

In a severe test of affliction, the abundance of their joy and their profound poverty overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. (2 Cor 8:2)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

INTERCESSIONS

With Saint Clare, we pray:

R/Our hope is in you, O Lord.

For all Poor Clare nuns:

– that they may live in joyful fidelity to the heritage of Saint Clare. R/

For all members of the Catholic Worker Movement:

– that they may bear witness to the joy of living among the poor for the sake of the Gospel. R/

For all who suffer deprivation and want:

– that they may discover in their pain the presence of Christ crucified. R/

For all who lead a life of penance:

– that their purity of heart may shine as a light for all around them. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Loving and merciful Father, who grant favors to all who seek you, through the intercession of the virgin Saint Clare may we draw ever closer to you in poverty of spirit and joy of life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer to keep your family safe

This prayer asks God and all his heavenly angels to protect your family from plagues, famine, war, and all evil.

Parents have a natural desire to keep their families safe. It is a holy desire, one that was shared by St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary. During Jesus’ childhood, they did all they could to protect their son from harm, though in truth he was protecting them more than they were protecting him! Here is a prayer approved by Pope Leo XIII that encompasses all of the worries of a parent. Say this prayer to keep your family safe.

Prayer to keep your family safe

God of goodness and mercy, we commend to your all-powerful protection our home, our family, and all that we possess. Bless us all as you did bless the holy family of Nazareth.

O Jesus, our most holy Redeemer, by the love with which you became man in order to save us, by the mercy through which you died for us upon the cross, we entreat you to bless our home, our family, our household. Preserve us from all evil from all hatred and from the evil intentions of our enemies, from the plague, famine, and war. Let not one of us die without the holy sacraments. O Jesus, bless us, protect us.

O Mary, Mother of grace and mercy, bless us, protect us against the evil spirit; lead us by the hand through this vale of tears; reconcile us with your divine Son; commend us to him, that we may be made worthy of his promises.

St. Joseph, the reputed father of Our Savior, guardian of His most holy Mother, head of the holy family, intercede for us, bless and protect our home always.

St. Michael, defend us against all the wicked wiles of hell.

St, Gabriel, obtain for us that we may understand the holy will of God.

St. Raphael, preserve us from ill health and all danger to life.

Holy guardian angels, keep us day and night in the way to salvation.

Holy patrons, pray for us before the throne of God.

Bless this house, God our Father, preserve our body, purify our soul, direct our heart, and lead us to life everlasting.

Glory be to the Father, glory be to the Son, glory be to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, AUGUST 10)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us call on the Lord’s name!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

We praise your triumph here on earth,

So, holy Lawrence, lend your aid,

May each of us your favor feel,

Receiving grace for which we prayed.

For all the care with which you served

And loved the city’s poor in Rome,

What luster must enhance your crown

For ever in the Father’s home!

To Father, Son and Spirit blest

Be honor, homage, and renown,

Who will reward your prayers for us

By granting an eternal crown.

PSALM 116:10-19

Jesus said to them, “Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” (cf. Mk 10:38)

Saint Lawrence, deacon and servant of the Gospel, drank down the cup of suffering in communion with Christ.

I trusted, even when I said:

“I am sorely afflicted,”

and when I said in my alarm:

“No man can be trusted.”

How can I repay the Lord

for his goodness to me?

The cup of salvation I will raise;

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord

is the death of his faithful.

Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;

you have loosened my bonds.

A thanksgiving sacrifice I make:

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people,

in the courts of the house of the Lord,

in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Romans 8:16-18)

We are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body

but after that can do no more. (Lk 12:4)

CANTICLE OF MARY

INTERCESSIONS

Redeemed by the blood of Christ, we pray:

R/Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world:

have mercy on us!

Blood of Christ, Only Begotten Son of the eternal Father, save us. R/

Blood of Christ, poured out on the cross, save us. R/

Blood of Christ, price of our salvation, save us. R/

Blood of Christ, shed anew in the martyrs, save us. R/

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: The Feast of Saint Lawrence (MONDAY, AUGUST 10)

Patron Saint of Deacons, Deacon and Martyr (d. 258)

His life

+ Lawrence was a deacon of the Church of Rome who served under Pope Saint Sixtus II.

+ Following the arrest of Pope Sixtus and a group of deacons, Lawrence was ordered to collect the Church’s treasure and to hand it over to the civil authorities. On the appointed day, Lawrence presented the poor—the Church’s true treasure—to the imperial prefect.

+ Saint Lawrence was martyred on August 10, 258, by being roasted to death on a gridiron.

+ Originally buried in a field outside of Rome, the Emperor Constantine later built a basilica in his honor. Devotion to Saint Lawrence spread quickly throughout the Church and his name is included in the Roman Canon (the First Eucharistic Prayer).

+ Saint Lawrence is honored as one of the patron saints of deacons and of the poor.

For prayer and reflection

“Just as Christ laid down his life for us, so we ought to lay down our lives for the brethen. My brethren, Lawrence understood this and, understanding, he acted on it. Just as he had partaken of a gift of self at the table of the Lord, so he prepared to offer such a gift. In his life he loved Christ; in his death he followed in his footsteps.”—Saint Augustine of Hippo

Spiritual bonus

On this day we also remember Blessed Claude Joseph Jouffret de Bonnefont, a priest of the Society of St. Sulpice who died during the anti-Catholic persecutions of the French Revolution. He died of starvation and neglect on the prison ship Deux-Associés and was beatified in 1995 as one of the “Martyrs of the Hulks of Rochefort.”

Prayer

O God, giver of that ardor of love for you

by which Saint Lawrence was outstandingly faithful in service

and glorious in martyrdom,

grant that we may love what he loved

and put into practice what he taught.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Come, let us adore the Lord with his holy martyrs!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

When Lawrence was led out to die,

Love made him prodigal of life,

No armor would he use but faith

Against the persecutor’s strife.

The first of seven chosen men

Selected at the pope’s behest,

A deacon’s office to fulfill,

In virtue he surpassed the rest.

He was a leader in the fight

Although no sword hung by his side,

And with a smile in face of death,

He could the torturer deride.

PSALM 116:1-9

Out of my distress I called to the Lord,/ and he answered me. (Jon 2:3)

Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr, preached the Gospel by his love for the poor, his courage under torture by fire, and his unswerving love for Christ.

I love the Lord for he has heard

the cry of my appeal;

for he turned his ear to me

in the day when I called him.

They surrounded me, the snares of death,

with the anguish of the tomb;

they caught me, sorrow and distress.

I called on the Lord’s name.

O Lord my God, deliver me!

How gracious is the Lord, and just;

our God has compassion.

The Lord protects the simple hearts;

I was helpless so he saved me.

Turn back, my soul, to your rest

for the Lord has been good;

he has kept my soul from death,

my eyes from tears

and my feet from stumbling.

I will walk in the presence of the Lord

in the land of the living.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 43:1b-2)

Fear not, for I have redeemed you;/ I have called you by name: you are mine./ When you pass through the water, I will be with you;/ in the rivers you shall not drown./ When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned;/ the flames shall not consume you.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

(cf. Ps 31:6)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

As Christ’s sufferings overflow to us, so through Christ does our encouragement also overflow. (2 Cor 1:5)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us put our trust in the all-powerful love of Christ our Savior:

R/Hear the cry of our appeal!

You call deacons to be servants of your word and your table:

– inspire in them a deep love for prayer, for preaching, and for the poor. R/

You took your place among those caught by sorrow and distress:

– fill all deacons with compassion for the sick and the suffering. R/

You are the courage of martyrs:

– protect those whose ministry takes them into dark and dangerous places. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord, the fire of your love filled the martyr Saint Lawrence with the courage to defy the fear of death for the sake of the Gospel. Grant all your people the grace to love as he loved, to live as he lived, and to die in the faith for which he died, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, AUGUST 9)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord listens to the needy:

let us give him thanks and praise.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Almighty God! your power controls

The surging sea that ceaseless rolls;

Its waves obey thy high behest,

And mount to heav’n, or sink to rest.

Creation owns its rightful Lord,

And bows submissive to thy word;

No will against thy will prevails,

He sinks to earth who God assails.

When passions surge within the soul,

As waves before the tempest roll;

When wild desires the heart entice

From yielding aught to sacrifice,

Then, Lord, command the surge to cease,

And give the soul your lasting peace;

For you have power who stilled the sea

That wildly raged at Galilee.

PSALM 69:2-3, 15b-19, 33-35

He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. (Mt 14:29)

The chaos of the sea represented to the Hebrew mind the forces of uncontrollable disintegration at work in death. The risen Christ gives us the courage to walk across even those terrifying waters toward his outstretched hand, for his arm is strong to save us even from their power.

Save me, O God,

for the waters have risen to my neck.

I have sunk into the mud of the deep

and there is no foothold.

I have entered the waters of the deep

and the waves overwhelm me.

Save me from the waters of the deep

lest the waves overwhelm me.

Do not let the deep engulf me

nor death close its mouth on me.

Lord, answer, for your love is kind;

in your compassion, turn towards me.

Do not hide your face from your servant;

answer quickly for I am in distress.

Come close to my soul and redeem me;

ransom me pressed by my foes.

The poor when they see it will be glad

and God-seeking hearts will revive;

for the Lord listens to the needy

and does not spurn his servants in their chains.

Let the heavens and the earth give him praise,

the sea and all its living creatures.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Jonah 2:3-4, 6, 7b-8)

Out of my distress I called to the Lord,/ and he answered me;/ From the midst of the netherworld I cried for help,/ and you heard my voice./ For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the sea,/ and the flood enveloped me;/ All your breakers and your billows passed over me./ The waters swirled about me, threatening my life;/ the abyss enveloped me;/ seaweed clung about my head./ But you brought up my life from the pit,/ O Lord, my God.

When my soul fainted within me,/ I remembered the Lord;/ My prayer reached you/ in your holy temple.

But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out,

“Lord, save me!” (Mt 14:30)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Mt 14:31)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
