CONSECRATION PRAYER TO SAINT RAPHAEL

Holy Archangel Raphael,

standing so close to the throne of God

and offering Him our prayers,

I venerate you as God’s special Friend and Messenger.

I choose you as my Patron

and wish to love and obey you as young Tobias did.

I consecrate to you my body and soul,

all my work, and my whole life.

I want you to be my Guide and Counsellor

in all the dangerous and difficult problems

and decisions of my life.

Remember, dearest Saint Raphael,

that the grace of God preserved you with the good angels in heaven

when the proud ones were cast into hell.

I entreat you, therefore,

to help me in my struggle against the world,

the flesh, and the devil.

Defend me from all dangers

and every occasion of sin.

Direct me always in the way of peace, safety, and salvation.

Offer my prayers to God as you offered those of Tobias,

so that through your intercession

I may obtain the graces necessary for the salvation of my soul.

Remember me and always entreat for me

before the Face of the Son of God.

Help me to love and serve my God faithfully,

to die in His grace,

and finally to merit to join you

in seeing and praising God forever in heaven.

Amen.

MASS (SUNDAY, AUGUST 9)

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

When the disciples see Jesus walking on the water, he summons them to faith—a way of approaching reality that entails leaving behind our old way of measuring things and seeing all according to this Person who calls to us. Yet we should not be surprised that Christ often comes in ways that “underwhelm” us, as Elijah found out in that tiny whispering sound. For Jesus comes to us in simple ways, seen only with eyes of faith: the pouring of water over an infant’s head; a whispered conversation within a confessional; bread and wine consecrated in the middle of the day as the world rushes on. But when such faith takes hold of us, we want everyone we know to share in it, as Saint Paul testifies.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON  Cf. Ps 74 (73):20, 19, 22, 23

Look to your covenant, O Lord,/ and forget not the life of your poor ones for ever./ Arise, O God, and defend your cause,/ and forget not the cries of those who seek you.

COLLECT

Almighty ever-living God,

whom, taught by the Holy Spirit,

we dare to call our Father,

bring, we pray, to perfection in our hearts

the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters,

that we may merit to enter into the inheritance

which you have promised.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity

of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord.

A reading from the first Book of Kings 19:9a, 11-13a

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the Lord said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord—but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake—but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire—but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

The word of the Lord.

PSALM 85

R/ (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

I will hear what God proclaims;

the Lord—for he proclaims peace.

Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,

glory dwelling in our land. R/

Kindness and truth shall meet;

justice and peace shall kiss.

Truth shall spring out of the earth,

and justice shall look down from heaven. R/

The Lord himself will give his benefits;

our land shall yield its increase.

Justice shall walk before him,

and prepare the way of his steps. R/

I could wish that I were accursed for the sake of my own people.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans 9:1-5

Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

The word of the Lord.

Alleluia, alleluia. I wait for the Lord;/ my soul waits for his word. Alleluia, alleluia.

Command me to come to you on the water.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 14:22-33

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

SUGGESTED PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

(Each local community should compose its own Universal Prayer, but may find inspiration in the texts proposed here.)

The Lord is our help and our shield. Filled with confidence, we turn to the Father with our petitions:

For the protection and strengthening of the Church wherever she is persecuted, and that the peace of Christ will bring an end to all violent conflict in the world.

For the strengthening of marriage and family life, and for all those preparing for marriage, that the Lord will fill them with virtue and a love that endures all things.

For all those who serve our country in the armed forces: that God will bless them and keep them out of harm’s way.

That those who suffer will experience the redemptive meaning of suffering through friendship with Jesus Christ.

For those who are unemployed: that God will keep them from discouragement and enable them to secure good jobs.

For the grace to live with greater faith: free from doubt, fear, and discouragement.

Loving Father, when those who are afflicted call out, you hear and save them from distress. Please be close to us in our need. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Be pleased, O Lord, to accept the offerings

of your Church,

for in your mercy you have given them to be offered

and by your power you transform them

into the mystery of our salvation.

Through Christ our Lord.

PREFACE OF SUNDAYS IN ORDINARY TIME

COMMUNION ANTIPHON Ps 147:12, 14

O Jerusalem, glorify the Lord,/ who gives you your fill of finest wheat.

Or:Cf. Jn 6:51

The bread that I will give, says the Lord,/ is my flesh for the life of the world.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

May the communion in your Sacrament

that we have consumed, save us, O Lord,

and confirm us in the light of your truth.

Through Christ our Lord.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SUNDAY, AUGUST 9)

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Prayer for the Morning

Before the Word of God, let us bow and pray in peace!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

I will sing the Lord’s high triumph,

Ruling earth and sky and sea;

God my strength, my song, my glory,

My salvation now is he.

Through the waters, through the waters

God has brought us liberty.

By the storm and at the mountain

Grace and judgment both are shown;

All who planned his people’s ruin

Power divine has overthrown.

Nations tremble, nations tremble,

God has made his mercy known.

PSALM 107:17-22

After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” (Mt 14:32-33)

Even amid the storms that threaten to sweep us away, we need not fear: Jesus Christ, God-with-us, keeps us even through the wildest of storms. God is the God of all of life—the chaos of the sea, the security of the land, the storm and the stillness.

Some were sick on account of their sins

and afflicted on account of their guilt.

They had a loathing for every food;

they came close to the gates of death.

Then they cried to the Lord in their need

and he rescued them from their distress.

He sent forth his word to heal them

and saved their life from the grave.

Let them thank the Lord for his love,

for the wonders he does for men.

Let them offer a sacrifice of thanks

and tell of his deeds with rejoicing.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Job 38:8-11)

And who shut within doors the sea,/ when it burst forth from the womb;/ When I made the clouds its garment/ and thick darkness its swaddling bands?/ When I set limits for it/ and fastened the bar of its door,/ And said: Thus far shall you come but no farther,/ and here shall your proud waves be stilled!

Say to those whose hearts are frightened:/

Be strong, fear not!/ Here is your God,/ he comes

with vindication;/ With divine recompense/

he comes to save you. (Is 35:4)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Fear not, I am with you;/ be not dismayed; I am your God./ I will strengthen you, and help you,/ and uphold you with my right hand of justice. (Is 41:10)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With confidence, we pray:

R/You will give strength to your people!

Your voice resounds in every troubled heart:

– grant us ears to hear and a heart to trust in you in our need. R/

Your voice shatters tumult and restores peace:

– grant us faith in your love and your power. R/

Your voice thunders over every threat that confronts us:

– grant us peace. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God of glory and power, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem us from the waters of chaos and death. Grant us the wisdom and courage to turn to him in prayerful confidence when the forces of sin and destruction threaten our peace and the peace of those around us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, AUGUST 7)

Prayer for the Evening

Christ is our peace:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Now thank we all our God,

with heart and hands and voices,

Who wondrous things has done,

in whom this world rejoices;

Who from our mothers’ arms

has blessed us on our way

With countless gifts of love,

and still is ours today.

O may this gracious God

through all our life be near us,

With ever joyful hearts

and blessed peace to cheer us;

Preserve us in his grace,

and guide us in distress;

And free us from all sin,

till heaven we possess.

All praise and thanks to God

the Father now be given;

The Son and Spirit blest

who reigns in highest heaven;

Eternal, Triune God,

whom earth and heaven adore;

For thus it was, is now,

and shall be evermore.

PSALM 72:1-4, 7, 12-14, 18-19

I will appoint peace your governor,/ and justice your ruler. (Is 60:17)

When we pray “Thy kingdom come,” we commit ourselves to serve its coming by living in peace and by seeking peace and justice for all who suffer in our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, our world.

O God, give your judgment to the king,

to a king’s son your justice,

that he may judge your people in justice

and your poor in right judgment.

May the mountains bring forth peace for the people

and the hills, justice.

May he defend the poor of the people

and save the children of the needy

and crush the oppressor.

In his days justice shall flourish

and peace till the moon fails.

For he shall save the poor when they cry

and the needy who are helpless.

He will have pity on the weak

and save the lives of the poor.

From oppression he will rescue their lives,

to him their blood is dear.

Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel,

who alone works wonders,

ever blessed his glorious name.

Let his glory fill the earth.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Ephesians 2:13-14, 15b-16)

Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ.

For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh,… that he might create in himself one new person in place of the two, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it.

He shall be peace. (Mi 5:4)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Blessed are the peacemakers,/ for they will be called children of God. (Mt 5:9)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, AUGUST 7)

  1. Saint Sixtus II and Companions; Saint Catherine (First Friday of the Month)

Prayer for the Morning

To God our praise is due!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

When God restored our captive state,

Joy was our song, and grace our theme,

The grace beyond our hopes so great

That joy appeared a painted dream.

When we review our dismal fears

’Twas hard to think they’d vanish so;

With God we left our flowing tears;

He makes our joys like rivers flow.

PSALM 65:2-4, 6

The Lord God will wipe away/ the tears from all faces;/ The reproach of his people he will remove/ from the whole earth. (Is 25:8)

The psalm calls to mind Saint Gregory of Nyssa’s word portrait of Christ the artist, tenderly wiping away all the grime of sin that disfigures the human face and restoring God’s image to its full beauty.

To you our praise is due

in Zion, O God.

To you we pay our vows,

you who hear our prayer.

To you all flesh will come

with its burden of sin.

Too heavy for us, our offenses,

but you wipe them away.

You keep your pledge with wonders,

O God our savior,

the hope of all the earth

and of far distant isles.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 43:20c-21, 25)

I put water in the desert/ and rivers in the wasteland/ for my chosen people to drink,/ The people whom I formed for myself,/ that they might announce my praise.

It is I, I, who wipe out,/ for my own sake, your offenses;/ your sins I remember no more.

O wash me more and more from my guilt/

and cleanse me from my sin.

(Ps 51:4)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Cease your cries of mourning,/ wipe the tears from your eyes./ The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward. (Jer 31:16)

INTERCESSIONS

God rewards with joy those who mourn for their sins and the sins of all our race. Let us pray with contrite hearts:

R/Hear our prayer; forgive our sins.

Where we have failed to be compassionate as you are compassionate:

– deepen our love for those who have fallen under the burden of their weakness. R/

Where we have failed to be faithful as you are faithful:

– renew our commitment to live the vows we made in baptism. R/

Where we have failed to be loving as you are loving:

– sharpen our willingness to put you and our neighbor before our own desires. R/

Where we have failed to be joyful as you free us to be:

– strengthen our trust in your unfailing love for us. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

Most merciful Lord and Savior, you wash away all our sins in the blood you shed upon the cross. Grant us the grace to rejoice in the freedom you have bought for us and to turn and set others free by the power of the love you have shown us, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer to resist temptation

When you are struggling to resist a temptation, ask God for help.

Temptations are not easy to resist, especially when they focus on areas in our lives that provide moments of physical pleasure. Our will wants one thing, while God’s will wants another.

It is impossible to fight against such a temptation alone, and it is absolutely necessary to take this battle straight to God.

Here is a prayer adapted from My Prayer Book that can be used in such a circumstance, asking God to help you resist temptations.

I humbly ask you, Lord, through the infinite merits of your painful sufferings, give me strength and courage to destroy every evil passion and temptation which sways my heart, to bless you in my greatest afflictions, to glorify you by the exact fulfillment of my duties, supremely to hate all sin, and thus to become a saint. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, AUGUST 6)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us sing God’s praise and his power!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

In days of old on Sinai

The Lord Almighty came

In majesty of terror,

In thundercloud and flame:

On Tabor, with the glory

Of sunniest light for vest,

The excellence of beauty

In Jesus was expressed.

All light created paled there,

And did him worship meet;

The sun itself adored him,

And bowed before his feet;

While Moses and Elijah,

Upon the holy mount,

The coeternal glory

Of Christ our God recount.

O holy, wondrous vision!

But what when, this life past,

The beauty of Mount Tabor

Shall end in heav’n at last?

But what when all the glory

Of uncreated light

Shall be the promised reward

Of them that win the fight?

PSALM 21:2-9, 14

I will sing to the Lord, for he is gloriously triumphant! (Ex 15:1)

On Tabor shone the light of glory that transformed the risen Christ, whose days will last from age to age, no matter how dark the world’s night.

O Lord, your strength gives joy to the king;

how your saving help makes him glad!

You have granted him his heart’s desire;

you have not refused the prayer of his lips.

You came to meet him with the blessings of success,

you have set on his head a crown of pure gold.

He asked you for life and this you have given,

days that will last from age to age.

Your saving help has given him glory.

You have laid upon him majesty and splendor,

you have granted your blessings to him for ever.

You have made him rejoice with the joy of your presence.

The king has put his trust in the Lord:

through the mercy of the Most High he shall stand firm.

His hand will seek and find all his foes,

his right hand find out those that hate him.

O Lord, arise in your strength;

we shall sing and praise your power.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Timothy 3:16)

Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion,

Who was manifested in the flesh,/ vindicated in the spirit,/ seen by angels,/ proclaimed to the Gentiles,/ believed in throughout the world,/ taken up in glory.

Glory and honor and power to the Lord, our God!

(cf. Rv 4:11)

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Feast of the Transfiguration (THURSDAY, AUGUST 6)

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

The meaning of the feast

+ Today’s feast recalls that privileged moment when Jesus, accompanied by Peter, James, and John, revealed his glory and the voice of the Father proclaimed, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him” (Matthew 17:5).

+ A feast in honor of the Transfiguration was first celebrated in Syria in the fourth century. It was first celebrated in the Western Church in France in the tenth century and as finally added to the Roman calendar in 1457 to commemorate of victory of Saint John Captistrano and the Christian forces in a battle against the Turks the previous year.

+ The readings and prayers for this celebration teach us how Jesus was the fulfillment of the prophets’ visions and of how we are invited to share in the glory of Jesus as adopted daughters and sons of our Heavenly Father.

For prayer and reflection

“Let us run with confidence and joy to enter into the cloud like Moses and Elijah, or like James and John. Let us be caught up like Peter to behold the divine vision and to be transfigured by that glorious transfiguration.”—Anastasius of Sinai

O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration

of your Only Begotten Son

confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers

and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship,

grant, we pray, to your servants,

that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son,

A PRAYER IN HONOUR OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

ANT. This is the rod in which was neither knot of original sin,

nor rind of actual guilt.

V. In thy conception, O Virgin!

Thou wast immaculate.

R. Pray for us to the Father,

Whose Son thou didst bring forth.

O God, who by the Immaculate Conception

of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

didst prepare a worthy dwelling place for thy Son,

we beseech Thee that,

as by the foreseen death of this, Thy Son,

Thou didst preserve her from all stain,

so too Thou wouldst permit us,

purified through her intercession,

to come unto Thee.

Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son,

who livest and reignest with Thee

in the unity of the Holy Ghost,

God, world without end.

Amen.

NOVENA TO THE FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS

PREPARATORY PRAYER (This is said each day)

Great princes and princesses of Heaven, Holy Helpers,

who sacrificed to God all your earthly possessions,

wealth, enjoyments, and even life,

and who now are crowned in Heaven

in the secure delight of eternal bliss and glory,

have compassion on me,

a poor sinner in this valley of tears.

Obtain for me from God,

Who loves you and for Whom you gave up all things,

the strength to bear patiently all the trials of this life,

to overcome all temptations,

and to persevere in God’s service to the end.

So that, one day, I too may be received into your company,

to praise and glorify Him,

the supreme Lord,

Whose beatific vision you enjoy,

and Whom you praise and glorify for ever.

Amen.

DAY ONE

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

The practice of honoring and invoking the Saints to obtain, through their intercession, help in the various needs of body and soul, is as old as the Church. Prayer is our resource in every difficulty, and difficulties and trials are never wanting on earth. Because the needs of mankind on earth are various, these saints were selected as intercessors in certain cases of distress, and obtained relief; hence these saints came to be regarded as special patrons in such trials, and were called Holy Helpers.

PRACTICE

Make this novena with full confidence in the power of the intercession of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. During their earthly life, they devoted all their energy into spreading God’s kingdom and for the relief and succor of their fellow-men. They can do much more now that they are in the enjoyment of eternal happiness, and can pray for us at the very throne of God.

The saints can help us by their intercession. God hears their prayers and He performs miracles to confirm us in this belief, even while His servants are alive here on earth. They desire and are willing to help us.

St. Bernard says: “In Heaven, hearts do not grow cold; they are rather rendered more affectionate and tender. By receiving the crown of justice, the Saints were not hardened against the sufferings of their brethren on earth.” Therefore, in calling on the Holy Helpers, have full confidence in their power and ability to come to your aid!

PRAYER

We beseech You, O Lord,

to hear the prayer which we send up to You

in honor of Your glorified servants,

the Fourteen Holy Helpers:

and as we cannot rely upon our own worthiness,

grant our petition through the intercession of those

whose merits have made them especially dear to You.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY TWO

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

The Holy Helpers faithfully cooperated with God’s designs concerning their eternal destiny. No obstacle could make them stray from the path of duty. Always and everywhere they fulfilled the will of God.

You, too, have an eternal destiny. You are not your own master, but belong to God. Therefore you must obey Him, and not your own inclinations. You must do His will, and not your own. God has the right of requiring our submission to Him without giving us a reward, because He is Our Lord. Nevertheless, He has promised to give us Himself in reward for our faithful service. What greater motivation could there be then to know that our Loving and Almighty God will give us Himself, if we but serve Him zealously and gratefully?

Remember also that you shall be unhappy both in this and in the next world if you do not give yourself entirely to God, for whom you were created. St. Augustine says: “Thou hast created us for Thee, O Lord, and our heart remains restless until it rests in Thee.”

PRACTICE

Thank God for the undeserved grace of creation and redemption. Make an act of contrition for all the ways that you have been unfaithful. Promise to amend your ways and invoke the aid of God’s grace through the intercession of the Holy Helpers.

PRAYER

O God, Who according to the decrees of Thy providence

has created man for eternal bliss,

grant, through the intercession of the Holy Helpers,

that I may attain to my destiny

by being united with Thee in this life

and loving and praising Thee for ever in Heaven.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY THREE

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

The Holy Helpers were so thoroughly filled with the virtue of Divine Faith, that they believed its sacred truths with perfect abandonment of their intellect, will, liberty, and whole being. They did not waver amidst the severest torments, but remained firm until death in the Faith of Christ.

PRACTICE

Enkindle your faith by the reflection of the example of the Holy Helpers. Do not, out of fear for human respect, neglect the sanctification of the Lord’s Day, the observance of days of fast and abstinence, the reception of the holy sacraments, the profession of your belief in the real presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, etc. Meditate frequently on the words of Christ: “He that shall deny Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father Who is in Heaven” (St. Matthew 10:33).

PRAYER

O God, I beseech You,

through the faith of the Holy Helpers,

grant me the grace to treasure in my heart

the doctrines of our holy Faith,

to believe them firmly,

to confess them bravely,

and to live according to their precepts,

that through that same Faith

I may become worthy

to be admitted to Your beatific vision in Heaven.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY FOUR

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

“Hope confounds not” (Romans 5:6). These words of Holy Scripture are understood to be in the sense that our works must be in conformity with that which is the object of our hope; that is, we must live in such a manner that we really merit the reward of Heaven.

We sin against hope also by presuming on God’s mercy, by despair, and by over-confidence in our own righteousness. Holy Scripture reminds us that we cannot, of our own ability, perform a good act. But we can do all in Him that strengthens us.

All these truths are exemplified in the lives of the Holy Helpers. Their hope was based on the firm foundation of faith, and consequently, like their faith, their hope was firm, constant, and unwavering.

PRACTICE

Like the Holy Helpers, hope to obtain from God all things necessary to salvation, for “the Lord is good to them that hope in Him, to the soul that seeks Him” (Lam. 3:25). Live so that He can fulfill His promises. Place no obstacle to His might and generosity by living a sinful life.

PRAYER

Eternal God of love and mercy,

I thank You for all the benefits You have conferred upon me,

and I hope to obtain,

through the intercession of the Holy Helpers,

all the graces necessary for my salvation.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY FIVE

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

The Love of God which inflamed the Holy Helpers showed throughout their whole life, and particularly at their death. We, too, ought to be inflamed with such love. For without it, faith, wisdom, the gift of tongues, and good works in general, all avail nothing – for the love of God must inspire them. “And we know that to those that love God, all things work together unto good” (Romans 8:28). This, and this alone, will receive the crown of life. Did not God love us first? To redeem us from sin and eternal death, He did not even spare His only begotten, Divine Son. All goods of life are gifts of His love – signs of His infinite love. And we find it difficult to return this love? How ungrateful not to love God with your whole heart!

PRACTICE

Imitate the Holy Helpers in their ardent love of God. Implore their intercession to obtain it. Meditate often on God’s love for you, and your heart will be enflamed with love for Him.

PRAYER

O God of mercy and love,

I thank You with all my heart

for the countless graces

which Your infinite love has bestowed on me.

By the ardent love which the Holy Helpers had for You,

I implore You to enkindle in my heart

the flame of Your love,

so that I may remain in You and You in me.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY SIX

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

Charity is one of the fundamental virtues of the Catholic religion. The moral doctrine preached by Christ is comprised in the words: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like to this. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments depends the whole law and the prophets” (St. Matthew 22:37-40).

As in everything else, the Holy Helpers are our models also in charity. Charity consists in wishing well for our fellow men, rejoicing with the glad and sympathizing with the sad. It includes also doing good to all, being friendly, lenient, meek, and helpful toward them. We are loving our neighbor when we assist the poor and distressed, when we harbor no envy for those better off than ourselves, when we esteem the just for their virtue, and hate not the sinner but their sin.

We love our neighbor by not just having these sentiments in our heart, but by showing them in our actions.

PRACTICE

Endeavor to exercise this charity according to the spirit of Christ. The love of your neighbor must not be a sentimental affection; it must not be based on your personal inclination, or some casual qualities of their character or rank, etc. True charity must have the love of God as its motive. We must exercise charity toward all because God wills it, and it must be in the manner in which He wills it. “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”

PRAYER

O God of charity,

Who wills that I love my neighbor for Your sake,

grant me the grace,

through the intercession of the Holy Helpers,

to be filled with that spirit of charity

which embraces all and excludes none,

which “is patient, kind, envies not,

deals not perversely, is not puffed up,

is not ambitious, seeks not their own,

is not provoked to anger,

thinks no evil, rejoices not in iniquity,

but rejoices with the truth,

bears all things,

believes all things,

endures all things, and never falls away” (1 Cor. 13:4-8).

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY SEVEN

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

By the conscious fulfilling of the duties of their state of life, the Holy Helpers show us that the Will of God alone was the motive of all their actions. Human respect, regard for the opinion of others, did not influence them. The cowardly fear, “What will people say?” is the ruin of many a soul. The devil, the enemy of mankind, is always intent on preventing us from doing good because of human respect. He makes it seems that virtue and piety are out of date and ridiculous.

Due to human respect, many people boast of what should make them blush. They think it degrading to themselves if they do not mock the God and the things of God as much as others. Should we really let the opinion and ridicule of the world influence us or even prevent us from pleasing God? St. Paul says: “If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ” (Gal. 1:10).

Our Lord Himself tells us, “He that shall deny Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father Who is in Heaven” (St. Matthew 10:33).

PRACTICE

Our Lord says: “So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father Who is in Heaven” (St. Matt. 5:16). Do not stray from the path of duty on account of human respect. Do not let yourself be influenced by the judgments of the world.

PRAYER

Merciful God,

who gave the Holy Helpers the grace to fulfill Your Will,

regardless of human respect,

grant that we may obtain through their intercession and merits

the courage to despise the opinion of men,

and ever serve You with a fearless heart.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY EIGHT

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

The Holy Helpers, knowing well the power of prayer, vigilantly devoted themselves to it. From their prayers they drew that wonderful strength which sustained them in their combat for the Faith.

Prayer is the elevation of the mind to God, interaction with Him by prayers of adoration, praise, thanksgiving, and petition. St. Chrysostom says of prayer: “Without prayer it is impossible to lead a good life – for no one can practice virtue except for those who humbly implore God of it, Who alone can give them the strength necessary. Those who cease to love and practice prayer, no longer possess the gifts of the Holy Spirit. But those that persevere in the service of God, and deem it an irreparable loss to miss constant prayer, possesses every virtue and is a friend of God.”

PRACTICE

Offer yourself at the beginning of each day to God, and thereby you will belong to Him throughout the whole course of the day. Renew your consecration to God frequently during the day with short acts of virtue and especially by a good intention. In this way, you will make all your work as a prayer, and you will attain perfection.

PRAYER

O God, I implore You through the merits

and intercession of the Holy Helpers,

to grant me the spirit of prayer,

that following their example

I may walk in Your presence

and ever enjoy the consolation of interaction with You.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

DAY NINE

Begin with the Preparatory Prayer.

MEDITATION

A victorious death was the reward of the Holy Helpers’ perseverance in the service of God. During this novena you have, no doubt, formed many good resolutions, exclaiming with King David, the Royal Prophet, “And I said, now I have begun” (Ps. 76:11).

But as it happens to many, that despite their good will, they become neglectful in the pursuit of virtue. And satan does all that he can to obtain their ruin. He portrays and exaggerates the difficulties that will be encountered on the path of virtue. They hesitate, stumble, and finally turn back. This is the most unfortunate thing that can happen. Our Lord Himself says of those who are in this condition: “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through places without water, seeking rest, and not finding, he says: ‘I will return into my house whence I came out.’ And when he is come, he finds it swept and garnished. Then he goes and takes with him seven spirits more wicked than himself, and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first” (St. Luke 11:24-26). These words are truly a serious warning to encourage us to never let go of our good resolutions.

PRACTICE

In concluding this novena, examine again the depths of the incomprehensible eternity which is awaiting you. Think about and contemplate the endless chain of centuries following each other in eternity – an eternity of reward or of punishment. This thought alone should conquer all of the difficulties that challenge our perseverance.

PRAYER

O God, Whose mercies are infinite

and Whose goodness is without limit,

I beseech You through the merits and intercession of the Holy Helpers,

grant me the grace of perseverance in Your Love

and service to the end.

O generous God,

Who dispenses so many favors through the Holy Helpers,

despise not my prayer,

but graciously hear me

and grant my great desire.

Amen.

To finish the prayers for this day, say the…

“Litany of the Fourteen Holy Helpers” and the “Invocation of the Holy Helpers”.

CONCLUDING PRAYER

O faithful servants of God

and powerful protectors of man, Holy Helpers!

Since Our Lord appointed you as the heavenly advocates

for our needs on earth,

I confidently turn to you for help in my distress.

Countless people praise you for aiding them

with counsel in doubt,

with consolation in anxiety,

with health in illness,

with safety in danger,

with delivery from prison,

and with help and assistance in all tribulations.

Therefore I also have recourse to you,

and implore you not to refuse me your aid.

Give thanks to God for me

for all the graces He has granted to me during this Novena.

I attribute them to your great merits and powerful intercession.

I thank you all together,

and each one in particular,

for your interest in my favor before the throne of God.

I commend myself to your continued protection,

that I may one day be united with you in Heaven,

there to thank the Giver of all good things

and to praise Him for all eternity!

Amen.
