Prayer for birthdays from the Bible

The next time someone celebrates a birthday, you can say this prayer of blessing, found in the Bible, over them.

In much of the English-speaking world, the traditional “Happy Birthday” song is sung during celebrations. Sometimes it is followed by “May the Dear Lord Bless You,” which is sung in a similar way.Besides that, there also is a popular prayer form the Bible that can be used to invoke God’s blessing upon someone on their birthday. The next time you celebrate someone’s birthday, you can say this prayer over them, or even just in your heart.

[May] the Lord bless you and keep you!

[May] the Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you!

[May] the Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:24-26)

Prayer to St. Monica for Your Children

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Martha (WEDNESDAY, JULY 29)

Friend and Host of Jesus (First Century)

Her life

+ Martha, along with her sister, Mary, and brother, Lazarus, were close friends who Jesus and welcomed him into their home.

+ Martha and Mary felt free to call on Jesus when Lazarus died and the Gospel of John records Jesus’ emotional response to the news of Lazarus’ death.

+ Martha showed her faith when she declared to Jesus, “Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, he who is to come into the world” (John 11:27).

+ Although we know nothing about the life of Saint Martha outside of what is contained in Scripture, ancient tradition relates that Martha, Mary, and Lazarus left Judea and settled in France. The purported tomb of Saint Martha can be found in the Collegiate Church in Tarascon, France.

+ Saint Martha is honored as the patron saint of homemakers, innkeepers, and domestic servants.

For prayer and reflection

“Martha and Mary were sisters, related not only by blood but also by religious aspirations. They stayed close to our Lord and both served him harmoniously when he was among them. Martha welcomed him as travelers are welcomed. But in her case, the maidservant received her Lord, the invalid her Savior, the creature her Creator, to serve him bodily food while she was to be fed by the Spirit.”—Saint Augustine of Hippo

Spiritual Bonus

In 1900, 15 women in Nova Scotia responded to an invitation from the diocesan bishop to establish a new religious community dedicated to practical works of service. This community, the Sisters of St. Martha—known as “Marthas”—live their vocation by “hearing, embracing and responding to the cry for Gospel hospitality.”

More recently, the Congregation of Martha and Mary was founded in Jalapa, Guatemala, in 1979. Their way of life combines the contemplative live with active charity by caring for disabled children, orphans, the elderly, and those suffering from addiction. They run schools in some of Guatemala’s poorest and most neglected areas.

Prayer

Almighty ever-living God,

whose Son was pleased to be welcomed

in Saint Martha’s house as a guest,

grant, we pray,

that through her intercession,

serving Christ faithfully in our brothers and sisters,

we may merit to be received by you

in the halls of heaven.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, JULY 29)

Prayer for the Morning

Praise the Lord for the Lord is good!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Saint Martha, we recall the joy

Of which your energy gave proof,

When opportunity was yours

To welcome Christ beneath your roof.

Alert and eager with much care,

Your ardent soul could find no rest,

In many things solicitous

To please so greatly loved a Guest.

While you prepare a festal board

At which he will have honored place,

Your brother and your sister draw

From him the food of life and grace.

O blessed hostess of your Lord,

Make our hearts ready like your own,

To welcome him to their abode

To find in them true friendship’s throne.

CANTICLE (Zephaniah 3:14-18a)

Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time? (Mt 24:45)

The Lord is most extravagant in his love for us, sometimes his most unreliable servants. How foolish to give our lives—our time, our attention, our obedience—to mere idols who can love no one. Martha was rebuked not for her work but for allowing her work to make her lose sight of love.

Shout for joy, O daughter Zion!

sing joyfully, O Israel!

Be glad and exult with all your heart,

O daughter Jerusalem!

The Lord has removed the judgment against you,

he has turned away your enemies;

The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst,

you have no further misfortune to fear.

On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem:

Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged!

The Lord, your God, is in your midst,

a mighty savior;

He will rejoice over you with gladness,

and renew you in his love,

He will sing joyfully because of you,

as one sings at festivals.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 44:1-2)

Hear then, O Jacob, my servant,/ Israel, whom I have chosen./ Thus says the Lord who made you,/ your help, who formed you from the womb:/ Fear not, O Jacob, my servant,/ the darling whom I have chosen.

I am your servant. (Ps 143:12)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Give her a reward of her labors,/ and let her works praise her at the city gates. (Prv 31:31)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With confidence in God’s love for us, let us pray:

R/Look kindly on the prayer of your servants,

O Lord, our God.

You have called some to the service of work and some to the service of prayer:

– grant us mutual respect and support as we seek to further your Kingdom. R/

You have called some to serve in public ways and some to serve in the privacy of the home:

– keep us all faithful to the tasks you have given us. R/

You have called some to serve in active ways and some to serve by suffering:

– sustain us all in faith, hope, and love. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord our God, you have called all those who bear the name of your Son to serve one another and the world around us by the works of faith and love. By the intercession of Saint Martha, renew our zeal for the tasks you have given us, that we may serve the coming of your Kingdom, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, JULY 28)

Prayer for the Evening

O give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Son of God, in Galilee

You made the deaf to hear,

The mute to speak, the blind to see;

O blessed Lord, be near.

O listen to the silent prayer

Of your afflicted ones.

O bid them cast on you their care;

Your grace to them make known.

CANTICLE (Philippians 2:6-11)

Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Mt 16:25)

Jesus did not hesitate to take up the cross for our sake. Will we refuse to take it up for his sake and for the sake of all those for whom he died? If we do, we may gain temporary benefits, but what will we lose in the long run?

Though he was in the form of God,

Jesus did not consider equality with God

something to be grasped at.

Rather, he emptied himself

and took the form of a slave,

being born in the likeness of men.

He was known to be of human estate

and it was thus that he humbled himself,

obediently accepting even death,

death on a cross!

Because of this,

God highly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name

above every other name,

So that at Jesus’ name

every knee must bend

in the heavens, on the earth,

and under the earth,

and every tongue proclaim

to the glory of God the Father:

Jesus Christ is Lord!

Word of God (Isaiah 57:15b-c, 18)

On high i dwell, and in holiness,/ and with the crushed and dejected in spirit,/ To revive the spirits of the dejected,/ to revive the hearts of the crushed./ I saw their ways,/ but I will heal them and lead them;/ I will give full comfort/ to them and to those who mourn for them.

If you will to do so, you can cure me.

(cf. Mk 1:40)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Heal me, Lord, that I may be healed;/ save me, that I may be saved,/ for it is you whom I praise. (Jer 17:14)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

God dwells with the crushed and dejected in spirit. For them, let us pray:

R/Lord, hear the cry of the poor.

For those who suffer chronic illness:

– grant them patient endurance. R/

For those who suffer mental or emotional illness:

– grant them peace of mind. R/

For those who suffer terminal illness:

– grant them hope as they approach you. R/

For all who love and care for the sick:

– grant them the reward of your love. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the God of peace himself make us perfect in holiness. May he preserve us whole and entire, spirit, soul, and body, irreproachable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. (cf. 1 Thes 5:23)

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, JULY 27)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord will not abandon his people:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

This world, my God, is held within your hand,

Though we forget your love and steadfast might

And in the changing day uncertain stand,

Disturbed by morning, and afraid of night.

From youthful confidence to careful age,

Help us each one to be your loving friend,

Rewarded by the faithful servant’s wage,

God in Three Persons, reigning without end.

PSALM 94:9-15, 22

God does not withdraw his mercy,/ nor permit even one of his promises to fail. (Sir 47:22)

Uncertainty is an ever-present reality to the Christian believer. Is God really there? Is he really interested? Can he really hear prayers? Does he really act in today’s world? Does he keep his promises even now? The Psalmist faced the same questions with a courageous “yes!”

Can he who made the ear, not hear?

Can he who formed the eye, not see?

Will he who corrects nations, not punish?

Will he who teaches men, not have knowledge?

The Lord knows the thoughts of men.

He knows they are no more than a breath.

Happy the man whom you teach, O Lord,

whom you train by means of your law:

to him you give peace in evil days

while the pit is being dug for the wicked.

The Lord will not abandon his people

nor forsake those who are his own:

for judgment shall again be just

and all true hearts shall uphold it.

As for me, the Lord will be a stronghold;

my God will be the rock where I take refuge.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 12:27-28)

Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass in the field that grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?

God is faithful and will not let you be tried

beyond your strength. (1 Cor 10:13)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call. (Acts 2:39)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With faith in God who keeps his promises, let us pray:

R/We place our trust in you!

For those who do not believe in God:

– grant them the gift of faith. R/

For those who do not believe in Jesus Christ:

– grant them the gift of faith. R/

For those who do not trust in your love or your promises:

– grant them the gift of faith. R/

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Pantaleon (MONDAY, JULY 27)

Honored as the “Wonder-Worker”. Martyr (Fourth Century)

His life

+ The life of this early martyr is largely shrouded in legend.

+ According to ancient traditions, he was born to a pagan father and Christian mother and studied medicine. One account of his life says that he served as a physician to the emperor Galerius.

+ Many of the stories about Saint Pantaleon concern miraculous cures on behalf of the poor and, because of this, he is was not only honored as one of the “Fourteen Holy Helpers,” he is still honored as one of the patrons of physicians.

+ In the Eastern Church, Saint Pantaleon is honored as “the Great Martyr and Wonder-Worker.”

For prayer and reflection

I turned every way, but there was no one to help me,

I looked for one to sustain me, but could find no one.

But then I remembered the mercies of the Lord,

his kindness through ages past;

For he saves those who take refuge in him,

and rescues them from every evil. — Sirach 51:7-8

Prayer

Almighty and merciful God,

who brought your Martyr blessed Pantaleon

to overcome the torments of his passion,

grant that we, who celebrate the day of his triumph,

may remain invincible under your

protection against the snares of the enemy.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, JULY 27)

Prayer for the Morning

Come, let us go up with joy to the house of the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Children of the heavenly King,

As you journey, sweetly sing;

Sing your Savior’s worthy praise,

Glorious in his works and ways.

We are traveling home to God,

In the way the fathers trod;

They are happy now, and we

Soon their happiness shall see.

Lift your eyes, you sons of light,

Zion’s city is in sight:

There our endless home shall be,

There our Lord we soon shall see.

PSALM 84:2-3, 6-8, 11a, 12

Jesus instructed the disciples to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick—no food, no sack, no money in their belts. (cf. Mk 6:8)

We are a pilgrim people, journeying through the varied landscapes of life on our way to the heavenly Jerusalem. Let us travel light, unburdened by useless baggage—material or spiritual—and sing this pilgrim psalm to the God who has given us such a glorious goal in life.

How lovely is your dwelling place,

Lord, God of hosts.

My soul is longing and yearning,

is yearning for the courts of the Lord.

My heart and my soul ring out their joy

to God, the living God.

They are happy, whose strength is in you,

in whose hearts are the roads to Zion.

As they go through the Bitter Valley

they make it a place of springs,

the autumn rain covers it with blessings.

They walk with ever growing strength,

they will see the God of gods in Zion.

One day within your courts

is better than a thousand elsewhere.

For the Lord God is a rampart, a shield;

he will give us his favor and glory.

The Lord will not refuse any good

to those who walk without blame.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Nehemiah 9:12-13)

With a column of cloud you led [your people] by day,/ and by night with a column of fire,/ To light the way of their journey,/ the way in which they must travel./ On Mount Sinai you came down,/ you spoke with them from heaven;/ You gave them just ordinances, firm laws,/ good statutes, and commandments.

Come, follow me. (Mk 10:21)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

When Jesus called, the disciples left their nets and followed him. (cf. Mt 4:20)

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray with confidence to the God who calls us to travel toward the Kingdom that is to come:

R/Lead us, O Lord.

We are your people, who walk the desert road to the Promised Land:

– keep us faithful to the demands of the journey

today. R/

We are your people, called to follow Jesus, the Lord:

– make us steadfast disciples, freed from all that would hold us back. R/

We are your people, destined for the heavenly Jerusalem:

– give us strength to go on when we grow weary of the journey. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord, as we travel through this day of our life, our strength is in you; in our hearts are the roads to our eternal destination, the place where you dwell for ever with your people in joy and in peace. Sustain us as we pass through the bitter valleys of suffering; shield us as dangers threaten; let us rejoice in the springs of living water that refresh us on our way; and keep us faithful until journey’s end, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to St. Mary Magdalene for everlasting joy

Saint Mary Magdalene,

woman of many sins, who by conversion

became the beloved of Jesus,

thank you for your witness

that Jesus forgives

through the miracle of love.

You, who already possess eternal happiness

in His glorious presence,

please intercede for me, so that some day

I may share in the same everlasting joy.

Amen.

Prayer to St. Lucy for protection of your soul

St Lucy, you preferred to let your eyes be torn out instead of denying the faith and defiling your soul; and God, through an extraordinary miracle, replaced them with another pair of sound and perfect eyes to reward your virtue and faith, appointing you as the protector against eye diseases. I come to you for you to protect my eyesight and to heal the illness in my eyes.

O St Lucy, preserve the light of my eyes so that I may see the beauties of creation, the glow of the sun, the color of the flowers and the smile of children.

Preserve also the eyes of my soul, the faith, through which I can know my God, understand His teachings, recognize His love for me and never miss the road that leads me to where you, St Lucy, can be found in the company of the angels and saints.

St Lucy, protect my eyes and preserve my faith. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, JULY 26)

Prayer for the Evening

Christ reveals God’s wisdom:

let us give him thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Teach me Aaron’s thoughtful silence

When corrected by thy rod;

Teach me Eli’s acquiescence,

Saying, “Do thy will, my God”:

Teach me Job’s confiding patience,

Dreading words from pride that flow;

For thou, Lord, alone exaltest,

And thou only layest low.

PSALM 25:1-11

He who keeps the law controls his impulses;/ he who is perfect in fear of the Lord has wisdom. (Sir 21:11)

The more faithfully we obey God’s will, the more deeply we value the hidden treasure of his Kingdom, manifested to those who seek it faithfully through resistance to the tyranny of self-will. Obedience runs counter to the world’s wisdom but teaches us God’s wisdom as revealed in the obedient Christ.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I trust you, let me not be disappointed;

do not let my enemies triumph.

Those who hope in you shall not be disappointed,

but only those who wantonly break faith.

Lord, make me know your ways.

Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my savior.

In you I hope all day long

because of your goodness, O Lord.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth.

In your love remember me.

The Lord is good and upright.

He shows the path to those who stray,

he guides the humble in the right path;

he teaches his way to the poor.

His ways are faithfulness and love

for those who keep his covenant and law.

Lord, for the sake of your name

forgive my guilt; for it is great.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Corinthians 2:6-8)

Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are mature, but not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew for, if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand

the things freely given us by God. (1 Cor 2:12)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The root of wisdom is fear of the Lord;/ her branches are length of days. (Sir 1:18)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
