PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, JULY 6)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us always praise God’s name!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

O God of mercy, by whose hand

Your people still are fed;

Who through this weary pilgrimage

Have all our fathers led:

Our vows, our prayers, we now present

Before your throne of grace:

God of our fathers, be the God

Of each succeeding race.

Through each perplexing path of life

Our wand’ring footsteps guide;

Give us each day our daily bread,

Your care for us provide.

O spread your shelt’ring wings around,

Till all our wand’rings cease,

And at our Father’s loved abode

Our souls arrive in peace!

Such blessings from your gracious hand

Our humble prayers implore;

And you shall be our chosen God

And portion evermore.

PSALM 61:2-6, 9

In the shadow of your wings I take refuge/ till the storms of destruction pass by. (Ps 57:2b)

The Fathers of the Church interpreted “the shadow of God’s wings” as the shadow of the cross on which are outstretched the protecting arms of the Savior. Christ, the King crucified and risen, is the shelter in whom we dwell secure.

O God, hear my cry!

Listen to my prayer!

From the end of the earth I call:

my heart is faint.

On the rock too high for me to reach

set me on high,

O you who have been my refuge,

my tower against the foe.

Let me dwell in your tent for ever

and hide in the shelter of your wings.

For you, O God, hear my prayer,

grant me the heritage of those who fear you.

So I will always praise your name

and day after day fulfill my vows.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Revelation 7:14b-16)

These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

For this reason they stand before God’s throne/ and worship him day and night in his temple./ The one who sits on the throne will shelter them./ They will not hunger or thirst anymore,/ nor will the sun or any heat strike them.

Hide us in the shelter of your wings! (cf. Ps 91:4)

CANTICLE OF MARY

You are a refuge to the poor,/ a refuge to the needy in distress;/ Shelter from the rain,/ shade from the heat. (Is 25:4)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

God is our shelter and our refuge. With confidence in him, we pray:

R/O God, hear our cry!

You hear your people calling to you from the ends of the earth:

– strengthen us when our faith and love grow faint. R/

You fix us firmly upon the rock of your Word:

– teach us to build our lives upon it and not upon the uncertain sands of passing fancies. R/

You invite us to dwell in your tent:

– refresh us with your presence after the heat and burdens of the day. R/

You lengthened the life of Christ, our King, for all eternity:

– bring all our beloved dead to dwell in love in his presence. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the blessing of almighty God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, descend upon us and remain with us for ever. Amen.

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Memorial of

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16,

from the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite

Your head is like Carmel,

and the hairs of your head,

bound in tresses,

even as royal purple, alleluia.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer after a bad day

If today turned out to be a rough day, here is a prayer for you.

We all have bad days. Whether something difficult happened at work, or family life didn’t go as planned, there are times when the entire day turns sour.As with all things, we should bring it to God and ask him to console us in our sorrow.

Here is a prayer adapted from the Family Prayer Book that puts words to our feelings and offers them to God, asking him for strength to do better tomorrow.

Guided by your Providence, O God, through the toils, the vexations, the turmoils, and the busyness of this day, I present myself before you to beg pardon of all my failings, and to acknowledge your goodness which has upheld me in all my difficulties.

O Lord, you know my weakness; and I can only again confess my unworthiness, and ask you to enable me now to look into the state of my soul that I may unite myself more firmly to you before this day be forever passed away.

O forgive me all my sins before I sleep; and grant that I may wake in the morning with a strong and lasting resolve to follow your will. Assist my weak endeavors that I may grow in grace as I grow in years. Cleanse my heart from all those corrupt dispositions which are offensive to you; from pride, wrath, selfishness, and inattention to serious things. To my sense of my unworthiness, let me add real sorrow; and to sorrow, sincere purposes of amendment. May I be ever just, mild, and compassionate to others: temperate, chaste, and humble in the government of my passions: content with my condition: and although diligent in my business, yet ever mindful to heap up to myself treasures in heaven.

Bless all my relations and friends, and especially those who are near and dear unto me; and grant that I may never give pain to those for whom I am beseeching your mercy. Accept the prayers, and pardon the imperfections, of all, through the merits of thy Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5 Prayers to start your morning right

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Maria Goretti (MONDAY, JULY 6)

Martyr (1890-1902)

Her life

+ Maria was born in the region of Ancona, Italy. After her father’s death, Maria assisted her hard-working mother by taking care of her five younger brothers and sisters.

+ Maria’s family shared a house with the Serenlli family, including their son, Alessandro, whom Maria honored as an elder brother.

+ In June, 1902, Alessandro twice made sexual advances towards Maria, threatening to kill her if she told anyone.

+ On July 5, he entered the Goretti home armed with a dagger. When Maria refused to submit to his advances, he stabbed her fourteen times.

+ Maria died on July 6, 1902, after having forgiven Alessandro; she was eleven years old. Pope Pius XII canonized Maria in 1950 in the presence of her mother and other members of her family.

+ Following his release from prison, Alessandro sought forgiveness from Maria’s mother, which she gladly offered. The next day they knelt together to receive communion side by side. Alessandro was also present at Maria’s canonization and spent the remainder of his life as a claustral oblate with the Capuchin Franciscans. He died in 1970.

For prayer and reflection

“Not all of us are expected to die a martyr’s death, but we are all called to the pursuit of Christian virtue. This demands strength of character though it may not match that of this innocent girl. Still, a constant, persistent and relentless effort is asked of us right up to the moment of our death. This may be conceived as a slow steady martyrdom which Christ urged upon us when he said: The kingdom of heaven is set upon and laid waste by violent forces.”—Pope Pius XII at the canonization of Saint Maria Goretti

Prayer

O God, author of innocence and lover of chastity,

who bestowed the grace of martyrdom

on your handmaid, the Virgin Saint Maria Goretti, in her youth,

grant, we pray, through her intercession,

that, as you gave her a crown for her steadfastness,

so we, too, may be firm

in obeying your commandments.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, JULY 6)

Saint Maria Goretti

Prayer for the Morning

God’s are grandeur and power: come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

O God beyond all praising,

We worship you today

And sing the love amazing

That songs cannot repay;

For we can only wonder

At every gift you send,

At blessings without number

And mercies without end:

We lift our hearts before you

And wait upon your word,

We honor and adore you,

Our great and mighty Lord.

Then hear, O gracious Savior,

Accept the love we bring,

That we who know your favor

May serve you as our King;

And whether our tomorrows

Be filled with good or ill,

We’ll triumph through our sorrows

And rise to bless you still:

To marvel at your beauty

And glory in your ways,

And make a joyful duty

Our sacrifice of praise.

CANTCILE (1 Chronicles 29:10-13)

Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,/ for wisdom and power are his. (Dn 2:20)

What return can we make to God except our prayer of grateful praise? Though he needs nothing, he rejoices in this gift of our love.

Blessed may you be, O Lord,

God of Israel our father,

from eternity to eternity.

Yours, O Lord, are grandeur and power,

majesty, splendor, and glory.

For all in heaven and on earth is yours;

yours, O Lord, is the sovereignty:

you are exalted as head over all.

Riches and honor are from you,

and you have dominion over all.

In your hand are power and might;

it is yours to give grandeur and strength to all.

Therefore, our God, we give you thanks

and we praise the majesty of your name.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Chronicles 16:25-27)

Great is the Lord and highly to be praised;/ and awesome is he, beyond all gods./ For all the gods of the nations are things of nought,/ but the Lord made the heavens./ Splendor and majesty go before him;/ praise and joy are in his holy place.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. (1 Kgs 1:48)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens. (Eph 1:3)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

R/Blessed be the God of our salvation!

Our Father….

O God, the giver of all good gifts, our desire to praise you is itself a blessing you have bestowed upon us. We can offer you nothing that you do not already have except our love, which we render to you in worship and in service to all those whom you redeem in Jesus Christ. Grant us glad gratitude in him, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SATURDAY, JULY 4)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Lord brings us peace.

Let us give him thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

All you who seek for sure relief

In trouble and distress,

Whatever sorrow vex the mind,

Or guilt the soul oppress.

Jesus, who gave himself for you

Upon the Cross to die,

Opens to you his Sacred Heart;

O to that heart draw nigh.

You hear how kindly he invites;

You hear his words so blessed;

“All you that labor come to me,

And I will give you rest.”

PSALM 16:7-11

Down I went to the roots of the mountains;/ the bars of the netherworld/ were closing behind me forever,/ But you brought up my life from the pit,/ O Lord, my God. (Jon 2:7)

In difficult times Jesus is always with us. We may not feel his presence, and this can be a great trial. But he is there nonetheless. If we try to grow in faith when things are going well and dispose ourselves to receive this gift, our faith can help us to rest in him when he seems far away.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,

who even at night directs my heart.

I keep the Lord ever in my sight:

since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;

even my body shall rest in safety.

For you will not leave my soul among the dead,

nor let your beloved know decay.

You will show me the path of life,

the fullness of joy in your presence,

at your right hand happiness for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 51:25-30)

I open my mouth and speak of her [wisdom]:/ gain, at no cost, wisdom for yourselves./ Submit your neck to her yoke,/ that your mind may accept her teaching./ For she is close to those who seek her,/ and the one who is in earnest finds her./ See for yourselves! I have labored only a little,/ but have found much./ Acquire but a little instruction;/ you will win silver and gold through her./ Let your spirits rejoice in the mercy of God,/ and be not ashamed to give him praise./ Work at your tasks in due season,/ and in his own time God will give you your reward.

I myself will go along, to give you rest.
(cf. Ex 33:14)

CANTICLE OF MARY

In God alone be at rest, my soul. (Ps 62:6)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Our souls seek repose in the Lord. So we pray:

R/Let us rest in you.

When our hearts are full of conflict and confusion: R/

When we are feeling stressed and tired: R/

When circumstances seem to conspire against us: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May Christ dwell in our hearts through faith, and may charity be the root and foundation of our life. Amen. (cf. Eph 3:17)

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati (SATURDAY, JULY 4)

Dominican Tertiary (1901-1925)

His life

+ Pier Giorgio was born in Turin. His father was an Italian senator and ambassador.

+ As a young man, he studied industrial and mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic in Turin.

+ In 1919, Pier Giorgio joined a branch of Catholic Action noted for its anti-Fascist views. He became active in political movements, but he was also a member of a number of religious institutions, including a sodality of university students dedicated to nightly adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

+ Pier Giorgio’s religious views led him to begin to work for a reform of the Italian state based on principles. He became a Dominican Tertiary in 1922 and was also a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

+ Known as an easy-going and extroverted young man who loved cigars and mountain climbing., his deep spirituality and religious convictions were not always obvious to those who kew him.

+ Pier Giorgio contracted a virulent form of poliomyelitis through his contact with the sickand poor and he died in 1925. Called the “Man of the Beatitudes” at the time of his beatification, he was declared “blessed” in 1990.

For prayer and reflection

“What wealth it is to be in good health, as we are! But we have the duty of putting our health at the service of those who do not have it. To act otherwise would be to betray that gift of God.”—Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

Prayer

O God, who in your Saints have given an example and brought us protection in our weakness to help us tread the path of salvation, mercifully grant that we, who honor the heavenly birthday of blessed Pier Giorgio, may, through his example, make our way to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for God’s blessings upon your country

Ask God to bless and protect your country with this prayer.

God is often known as the “King of kings,” and Christians throughout the centuries have always asked for his blessings upon their country. He alone has the power to change hearts and can bring about a revolution within the heart of any leader around the world. Here is a prayer adapted from the Family Prayer Book that asks God’s blessing upon your country, asking him to have mercy upon all those who inhabit it.

O God, by whose mercy the world subsists, and to whose power every nation of the earth is subject, have mercy on this nation, we beseech you, and, according to its necessities, which are all known to you, so pour forth your blessings on it that, by the help of thy grace, it may in all things be well-pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SATURDAY, JULY 4)

Independence Day; Blessed Virgin Mary

First Saturday of the Month

Prayer for the Morning

In Christ is all freedom: let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

In loving adoration

We come to worship thee,

Thou Author of Salvation,

So wonderful, so free;

Oh, teach us how to praise thee,

As we before thee stand,

And hear us, as we pray thee,

To bless our own dear land.

For millions still in darkness

Within this land of light,

For those who’ve wandered blindly

From God and home and right

And those who ne’er have seen thee,

Thou God of love and might,

We earnestly beseech thee

May they receive their sight.

Be thou our strong defender,

Our confidence alone,

Be with our country’s rulers,

Our nation’s cornerstone;

And thus led by thy Spirit,

And heeding thy blest Word,

From ocean unto ocean

All men shall call thee Lord.

PSALM 37:3-6, 27-28

Follow exactly the way prescribed for you by the Lord, your God, that you may live and prosper, and may have long life in the land which you are to occupy. (cf. Dt 5:33)

With the gift of a land and a nation comes responsibility to the Giver. As Christians, let us never forget that our founders’ vision of liberty, peace, and justice for all can only be realized through the reign of Christ in our hearts and in our society. God will bless us as a nation if we give him his due.

If you trust in the Lord and do good,

then you will live in the land and be secure.

If you find your delight in the Lord,

he will grant your heart’s desire.

Commit your life to the Lord,

trust in him and he will act,

so that your justice breaks forth like the light,

your cause like the noon-day sun.

Then turn away from evil and do good

and you shall have a home for ever;

for the Lord loves justice

and will never forsake his friends.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Hosea 10:12)

Sow for yourselves justice,/ reap the fruit of piety;/ Break up for yourselves a new field,/ for it is time to seek the Lord,/ till he come and rain down justice upon you.

Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time
we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. (Gal 6:9)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness. (2 Cor 9:10)
