PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SATURDAY, JULY 11)

Saint Benedict

Prayer for the Morning

Come, ring out our joy to the Lord;

hail the rock who saves us!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

O blessed by God, Saint Benedict,

Let sadness not our hearts afflict

As we our daily tribute bring,

Your saintly life and glories sing.

Saint Benedict, to you we turn,

The secrets of God’s grace to learn,

O guide us by your wise decrees,

That God alone we seek to please.

God taught you to reject the wiles

Of sinful world which man beguiles;

Then, like a star that glitters bright,

God made of you a holy light.

In wondrous ray of God’s own light

The world appeared before your sight,

Then you the emptiness did see

Of earthly things, whate’er they be.

PSALM 95

Listen carefully, my son, to the master’s instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart. (Rule of Saint Benedict)

Saint Benedict, the father of Western monasticism, built his own life of prayer and praise on the Word of God. He directed that all those who would follow in his footsteps, whether as monks or, in more recent times, as lay oblates, begin their daily prayer with Psalm 95 so that they might be reminded to keep open the “ear of the heart.”

Come, let us sing to the Lord

and shout with joy to the Rock who saves us.

Let us approach him with praise and thanksgiving

and sing joyful songs to the Lord.

The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

and the highest mountains as well.

He made the sea; it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

Come, then, let us bow down and worship,

bending the knee before the Lord, our maker.

For he is our God and we are his people,

the flock he shepherds.

Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:

Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did in the

wilderness,

when at Meriba and Massah

they challenged me and provoked me,

Although they had seen all of my works.

Forty years I endured that generation.

I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray

and they do not know my ways.”

So I swore in my anger,

“They shall not enter into my rest.”

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 7:24-25)

Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.

My son, to my words be attentive,/

to my sayings incline your ear. (Prv 4:20)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

He gave them this command: “You shall act faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the Lord.” (2 Chr 19:9)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With hearts attuned to hear God’s word to us today, we pray:

R/Speak, Lord; your servants are listening!

You spoke to your people in the desert:

– let us hear your words in the silence of our prayer. R/

You sent your Son and Word into the world for our salvation:

– open our hearts to the gift of his love. R/

You teach your people through all the saints:

– instruct us in their wisdom. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, you called Saint Benedict into the wilderness to dwell with you in solitude, and into the heart of a community to dwell with you in service to others. Through his intercession, lead us by your word to hear and heed your will for us this day and every day, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, JULY 10)

Prayer for the Evening

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,

died, and was buried:

let us worship him in grateful prayer!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

In the Lord’s atoning grief

Be our rest and sweet relief;

Store we deep in heart’s recess

All the shame and bitterness.

Thorns, and cross, and nails, and lance,

Wounds, our treasure that enhance,

Vinegar, and gall, and reed,

And the pang his soul that freed.

May these all our spirits sate,

And with love inebriate;

In our souls plant virtue’s root,

And mature its glorious fruit.

PSALM 22:2-3, 17-19

He was pierced for our offenses,/ crushed for our sins,/ by his stripes we were healed. (cf. Is 53:5)

The Lord wept over the incurable wound which sin had inflicted on his people, seen in the reading as the virgin daughter. Yet he cured the wound by making it his own. He assumed our wounded humanity and healed it through the wounds he suffered on the cross.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

You are far from my plea and the cry of my distress.

O my God, I call by day and you give no reply;

I call by night and I find no peace.

Many dogs have surrounded me,

a band of the wicked beset me.

They tear holes in my hands and my feet

and lay me in the dust of death.

I can count every one of my bones.

These people stare at me and gloat;

they divide my clothing among them.

They cast lots for my robe.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Jeremiah 14:15a, 17)

Thus says the Lord: Speak to them this word:

Let my eyes stream with tears/ day and night, without rest,/ Over the great destruction which overwhelms/ the virgin daughter of my people,/ over her incurable wound.

Why is my pain continuous,/ my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? (Jer 15:18)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be un-believing, but believe.” (Jn 20:27)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Christ in glory bears the wounds he made his own and offers them to us as the pledge of his transforming love. In faith we pray:

R/Heal us, O Lord!

You knew the pain of torture:

– have mercy on those who suffer torture and death in our day. R/

You knew the unbearable burden of the cross:

– have mercy on those who fall under the burden of

life. R/

You knew the anguish of abandonment:

– have mercy on those who have been abandoned

by loved ones. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the God who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us, bring us to life in Christ when we are dead in sin! Amen. (cf. Eph 2:4-5)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Memorial of

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16,

from the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite

Your head is like Carmel,

and the hairs of your head,

bound in tresses,

even as royal purple, alleluia.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, JULY 10)

Prayer for the Morning

Our God is a forgiving God: let us come before him

in humble supplication.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

With broken heart and contrite sigh,

A trembling sinner, Lord, I cry:

Thy pardoning grace is rich and free:

O God, be merciful to me.

I smite upon my troubled breast,

With deep and conscious guilt oppressed,

Christ and his cross my only plea:

O God, be merciful to me.

Far off I stand with tearful eyes,

Nor dare uplift them to the skies;

But thou dost all my anguish see:

O God, be merciful to me.

Nor alms, nor deeds that I have done,

Can for a single sin atone;

To Calvary alone I flee:

O God, be merciful to me.

PSALM 31:10-13, 15, 17

I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.” (Lk 15:18)

The story of the prodigal son is the story of each one of us when we choose, foolishly, to cast away the home we have with God for a cold and hungry exile. Let us never hesitate to return and confess our sins, for we will always find the prodigal’s welcome from a Father who loves us more than we can ever imagine.

Have mercy on me, O Lord,

for I am in distress.

Tears have wasted my eyes,

my throat and my heart.

For my life is spent with sorrow

and my years with sighs.

Affliction has broken down my strength

and my bones waste away.

In the face of all my foes

I am a reproach,

an object of scorn to my neighbors

and of fear to my friends.

Those who see me in the street

run far away from me.

I am like a dead man, forgotten,

like a thing thrown away.

But as for me, I trust in you, Lord,

I say: “You are my God.

Let your face shine on your servant.

Save me in your love.”

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 15:1-2)

The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to [Jesus], but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Happy the man whose offense is forgiven,/ whose sin is remitted. (Ps 32:1)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found. (Lk 15:23-24)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

With contrite hearts, let us pray to our loving Father:

R/Lord, have mercy on us!

When we foolishly squander the heritage of grace that is ours in Christ: R/

When we wander away from our true home in you to seek illusory pleasures that leave us lonely and hungry of heart: R/

When we recognize our sin but fear to turn to you: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God of mercy and of love, hear us in our sin and grant us your forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, JULY 9)

Prayer for the Evening

Your love, Lord, reaches to heaven;/

your truth to the skies: to you we pray. (cf. Ps 36:6)

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Close beside the heart that loves me

Would I rest in sorrow’s hour,

With a Father’s smile above me,

And beneath—an arm of power.

Weak and worthless, worn and weary,

Welcome bids my faith be strong;

Sorrow’s hour is short, if dreary,

Joy shall last through ages long.

Dark the hour, but comes the morrow,

Dawn shall waken by and by;

Light shall gild the clouds of sorrow

When the sun is in the sky.

Rest, my soul: that love unfailing

Strengthens in the hour of woe—

For the pain your life assailing

Found him when he dwelt below.

PSALM 18:2-7, 14, 17-20

Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit. (Rom 5:5)

In the evening, when our strength is worn low by the day behind us and the darkness of night awaits us, it is easy to grow downcast. Let us put our hope in Christ our Savior, our strength and our joy.

I love you, Lord, my strength,

my rock, my fortress, my savior.

My God is the rock where I take refuge;

my shield, my mighty help, my stronghold.

The Lord is worthy of all praise:

when I call I am saved from my foes.

The waves of death rose about me;

the torrents of destruction assailed me;

the snares of the grave entangled me;

the traps of death confronted me.

In my anguish I called to the Lord;

I cried to my God for help.

From his temple he heard my voice;

my cry came to his ears.

The Lord thundered in the heavens;

the Most High let his voice be heard.

From on high he reached down and seized me;

he drew me forth from the mighty waters.

He snatched me from my powerful foe,

from my enemies whose strength I could not match.

They assailed me in the day of my misfortune,

but the Lord was my support.

He brought me forth into freedom,

he saved me because he loved me.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Peter 3:18)

For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit.

My savior and my God! (Ps 42:6)

CANTICLE OF MARY

He leads me in right paths/ for his name’s sake. (cf. Ps 23:3)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

As evening comes upon the world, we ask on behalf of all in need:

R/We hope in you, O God.

For those who have been deceived, cheated, and betrayed:

– restore their trust in others and in you. R/

For the weak and weary:

– strengthen them with the light and fidelity of
Christ. R/

For those who are tempted to take their own lives:

– renew them in hope and in courage. R/

For those who live in places where no one is permitted to go before your altar:

– grant them the freedom to worship in their hearts until they can worship you in public. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the God of peace himself make us perfect in holiness. May he preserve us whole and entire, spirit, soul, and body, irreproachable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. (cf. 1 Thes 5:23)

Prayer to feel Jesus’s love when receiving communion

Ask Jesus to come into your soul at communion and allow you to feel his love.

Often when we approach holy communion at Mass, we do not have any sensible feelings. It can be tempting to regard communion as a common event, something that has no effect on our soul.Yet the reality behind communion is that Jesus himself enters our soul! It is a profound mystery, one that we don’t always understand or remember.

One way to better appreciate this great gift of Jesus is to ask him for even a small glimmer of sensible feelings of his love. If it is in his will, he may even grant you that glimmer, which was known to overwhelm the saints.

Here is a brief prayer adapted from the Family Prayer Book that asks Jesus for this gift, a prayer that may be recited before receiving communion.

O, my dear Savior, the God of my heart, come to me and fill my soul; withdraw it from all created things, and let it be wholly fixed on you. I love you, O God; teach me to love you more and more. Teach me to feel an answering love to that which prompted you to institute this sacrament for our welfare. O, let not thy kindness be lost on me! Inflame me with the thought of your goodness; grant me those feelings of love and devotion which may produce a lasting effect upon my future conduct.

Let nothing hereafter disturb the pure gladness of my soul, which you will this day soothe with your presence. Grant me that love and devotion in this holy communion which may calm every worldly thought and care, and may fit my breast to be the blessed abode of divine charity.

Prepare me for this gift by the help of the Holy Spirit. Grant me now and ever to love you with my whole heart, with my whole soul, with all my strength, and with all my mind, and never to forget the great mercy now given to me in this holy communion.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (THURSDAY, JULY 9)

Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions

Prayer for the Morning

All who are thirsty, come to the living waters!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

From all the wind’s wide quarters,

Come, see the feast is spread,

Of soul-sustaining waters,

Of true and living bread;

Of sorrows long-departed,

And joys beyond compare:

Come, poor and humble-hearted,

The feast of life to share!

Come, claim the promise spoken!

God’s purpose stands secure.

His fruitful word unbroken

Shall evermore endure.

All ancient bondage ended

To sin’s corrupting powers,

Forgiven, freed, befriended,

The feast of life is ours!

PSALM 42:2-4, 8-10, 12

Jesus said: “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink.” (cf. Jn 7:37)

This psalm reflects the shifting moods of down-heartedness, questioning, and confident joy that can affect the committed believer in the face of the questions and taunts of a disbelieving world. Yet the tears and torrents of discouragement have no power over the waters of life with which God’s love renews us.

Like the deer that yearns

for running streams,

so my soul is yearning

for you, my God.

My soul is thirsting for God,

the God of my life;

when can I enter and see

the face of God?

My tears have become my bread,

by night, by day,

as I hear it said all the day long:

“Where is your God?”

Deep is calling on deep,

in the roar of waters:

your torrents and all your waves

swept over me.

By day the Lord will send

his loving kindness;

by night I will sing to him,

praise the God of my life.

I will say to God, my rock:

“Why have you forgotten me?

Why do I go mourning

oppressed by the foe?”

Why are you cast down, my soul,

why groan within me?

Hope in God; I will praise him still,

my savior and my God.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 55:1)

All you who are thirsty,/ come to the water!/ You who have no money,/ come, receive grain and eat;/ Come, without paying and without cost,/ drink wine and milk!

Lord, give us always this water to drink! (cf. Jn 4:15)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

INTERCESSIONS (cf. Saint Ambrose)

Let us pray to Christ, in whom all thirst is slaked:

R/Give us living water to drink!

You are the vine:

– bear in us the fruit of life. R/

You are the rock in the desert from which the waters flow:

– cool our weary souls with the living waters of your Holy Spirit. R/

You are the living Word:

– bring life to those who grope for a sense of purpose in life. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Ever-living God, you have given us the water of life to drink through Christ, vine, rock, Word. Make us so thirst for him that we will turn aside from all lesser thirsts, through him who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, JULY 8)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us praise Jesus Christ, who dwells in our midst!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Cry, faithful messengers of God,

“Behold the great Redeemer’s blood”;

Urge unto him all men to come,

For Jesus says there yet is room.

You naked, poor, oppressed, appear,

Unto Messiah’s door draw near:

Obey the call, undoubting come,

For Jesus says there yet is room.

Whoever Jesus Christ believe,

That favored soul shall ever live;

Shall taste below of joys to come,

And Jesus says there yet is room.

PSALM 113

So now, O children, listen to me,/ be attentive to the words of my mouth! (Prv 7:24)

Jesus Christ, the Word of God, is Emmanuel, “God-with-us.” Today, as during his earthly life, he dwells among the poor, the lowly, the brokenhearted, and the crushed in spirit, bringing peace and healing all wounds by the power of his living Word. His disciples are still commanded to “go and do likewise.”

Praise, O servants of the Lord,

praise the name of the Lord!

May the name of the Lord be blessed

both now and for evermore!

From the rising of the sun to its setting

praised be the name of the Lord!

High above all nations is the Lord,

above the heavens his glory.

Who is like the Lord, our God,

who has risen on high to his throne

yet stoops from the heights to look down,

to look down upon heaven and earth?

From the dust he lifts up the lowly,

from his misery he raises the poor

to set him in the company of princes,

yes, with the princes of his people.

To the childless wife he gives a home

and gladdens her heart with children.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 57:15)

Thus says he who is high and exalted,/ living eternally, whose name is the Holy One:/ On high I dwell, and in holiness,/ and with the crushed and dejected in spirit,/ To revive the spirits of the dejected,/ to revive the hearts of the crushed.

Whoever keeps Christ’s word,

the love of God is truly perfected in him. (cf. 1 Jn 2:5)

Fashioned by the word of God, let our prayer rise like incense before the heavenly throne:

R/Open our ears to hear your Word, O Lord.

Keep our tongue from evil,

– that we may proclaim your Word. R/

Keep our lips from speaking deceit,

– that we may speak your truth. R/

Turn us aside from evil,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: Sts Prisca and Aquilla(WEDNESDAY, JULY 8)

Companions of Saint Paul (First Century)

Their story

+ The Acts of the Apostles tells us that when Paul left Athens for Corinth, he met Prisca (or Priscilla) and her husband, Aquila, who had recently fled Rome because the Emperor Claudius had ordered the Jews to leave the city.

+ Saint Paul stayed with them in Corinth, working with them as a tent maker (Acts 18:1-3). The couple later traveled with Paul to Ephesus, where Prisca and Aquila instructed Apollos in the faith (Acts 18:18-19, 24-26).

+ It is clear that Paul held the couple in high regard and it seems they eventually returned to Rome, because in his letter to that city, Paul greets the members of the Church who met in their home (cf. Romans 16:3-5).

+ Although nothing more is known of their lives, it seems that at some point they returned to Ephesus and the Roman Martyrology states that they died in Asia Minor, although a later legend said they were martyred in Rome.

For prayer and reflection

“Together with the gratitude of the early Church, of which St Paul speaks, we must also add our own, since thanks to the faith and apostolic commitment of the lay faithful, of families, of spouses like Priscilla and Aquila, Christianity has reached our generation.”—Pope Benedict XVI

Prayer

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that the example of your Saints may spur us on to a better life, so that we, who celebrate the memory of blessed Prisca and Aquila, may also imitate without ceasing their deeds. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, JULY 8)

Prayer for the Morning

Let us bless the Lord at all times,

God’s praise always on our lips!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

This day God sends me

Strength as my steersman,

Might to uphold me,

Wisdom as guide.

Your eyes are watchful,

Your ears are listening,

Your lips are speaking,

Friend at my side.

God’s way is my way,

God’s shield is round me,

God’s host defends me,

Saving from ill.

Angels of heaven,

Drive from me always

All that would harm me,

Stand by me still.

PSALM 34:2-5, 8-9

The angel of God, who had been leading Israel’s camp, now moved and went around behind them. (Ex 14:19)

The Psalmist refers here to the angel of the Lord who stood between the fleeing Israelites and their Egyptian pursuers during the exodus, and hid them from sight. God goes with us, guards us, and guides us today with the same protective love.

I will bless the Lord at all times,

his praise always on my lips;

in the Lord my soul shall make its boast.

The humble shall hear and be glad.

Glorify the Lord with me.

Together let us praise his name.

I sought the Lord and he answered me;

from all my terrors he set me free.

The angel of the Lord is encamped

around those who revere him, to rescue them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.

He is happy who seeks refuge in him.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 30:20-21)

The Lord will give you the bread you need/ and the water for which you thirst./ No longer will your Teacher hide himself,/ but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher,/ While from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears:/ “This is the way; walk in it,”/ when you would turn to the right or to the left.

He will be gracious to you when you cry out. (Is 30:19)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

O Lord, you are my God,/ I will extol you and praise your name;/ For you have fulfilled your wonderful plans of old,/ faithful and true. (Is 25:1)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, JULY 7)

Prayer for the Evening

Our God is love: let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!

Let angels prostrate fall;

Bring forth the royal diadem,

and crown him Lord of all.

Bring forth the royal diadem,

and crown him Lord of all.

Let every tribe and every tongue

before him prostrate fall

And shout in universal song

the crownèd Lord of all.

And shout in universal song

the crownèd Lord of all.

O that, with yonder sacred throng,

we at his feet may fall,

Join in the everlasting song,

and crown him Lord of all,

Join in the everlasting song,

and crown him Lord of all!

PSALM 119:97-104

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (Jn 14:15)

The commandments are summed up in the command to love. Love is not mere sentiment. Love requires that we refrain from everything that would harm another, and choose to do whatever will serve the other person’s true well-being.

Lord, how I love your law!

It is ever in my mind.

Your command makes me wiser than my foes;

for it is mine for ever.

I have more insight than all who teach me

for I ponder your will.

I have more understanding than the old

for I keep your precepts.

I turn my feet from evil paths

to obey your word.

I have not turned away from your decrees;

you yourself have taught me.

Your promise is sweeter to my taste

than honey in the mouth.

I gain understanding from your precepts;

I hate the ways of falsehood.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Leviticus 19:17-18)

You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow man, do not incur sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.

Love does no evil to the neighbor;

hence, love is the fulfillment of the law. (Rom 13:10)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. (Jn 13:34)

With love for the God who has so loved us, we pray:

R/Teach us your ways, O Lord!

You made us in your image:

– reveal your love to the world through our love for one another. R/

You showed the depth of your love in the mystery of the cross:

– grant us the wisdom to seek forgiveness rather than vengeance. R/

You taught us that all peoples are neighbors:

– remove all the false boundaries that set limits to our love. R/

Our Father….

May Christ dwell in our hearts through faith, and may charity be the root and foundation of our life. Amen. (cf. Eph 3:17)
